Drawn to the Brink - I think this was a short story for a longer series, because it presumed a lot of knowledge that I simply didn't have. Had the potential to be really good, though.
The Variance Court - it skipped around a little be much for me, and the main character was quite underdeveloped even for a short story. It felt haphazardly drawn together at the end. Still enjoyable, but could've been much better.

I love a good fantasy, and this is definitely just that. I loved the setting and even the complex magic system was clearly explained. My favourite thing, though? The kickass female protagonist. Will definitely be recommending this series, and looking forward to reading the next installment.

Definitely enjoyed this collection of poems! The visual effect of the words was brilliant and despite their age they were well translated and easy to read and understand. All three poets were brilliant, but I think Tu Fu was my favourite... although my favourite poem was Song of the Peach Tree Spring by Wang Wei.
Pretty sure I will read these again, and glad I picked it back up.

It was on overall. A lot of the poems I didn't really get on with because they struck me as pretentious, and there seemed to be no real structure to them, but there were a couple that I quite enjoyed which is why it's a so-so instead of a pan. I might (though its unlikely) reread the two poems that I particularly liked again eventually, but never the whole book 🤔

The communist manifesto | Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels

Mehso-so

It was an interesting read with a lot of good ideas so far as I'm concerned, but it hasn't aged well. It doesn't hold up in a 21st century context, simply because Marx and Engels seemed fixated on what had happened as much as what was happening, but not so much with what the future would hold... unless it was the revolution they dreamt of, of course.
Still well worth reading 😊

A Modest Proposal | Jonathan Swift

What did I even read just now?! Most of it came across as the ramblings of a paranoid madman rather than a political satirist. I know times have changed a lot since this was written, but I'm stunned all the same. One essay was about selling babies as food, which even as satire is a bit much... especially when it goes into THAT much detail...
And I don't think it helped that he compared humans to brooms either 😑
#TBRChallenge #TBRCleanup

MayJasper Sounds dire! 6d
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I loved teaching "A Modest Proposal" in my 12th grade satire unit! My students were so uncertain about whether or not Swift was serious! At the end of the unit they got to write their own satiric proposals to solve school problems, with such results as the hall-monitor linebacker. 5d

Could this guy have been any more pretentious and self righteous? If it wasnt such a short book to begin with I would have bailed. It's a lecture and an essay he wrote about architecture, morality, industry and religious beliefs through history.
Given what I know, he seems to have wilfully misinterpreted a lot of historical facts to fit his ideas too 😑
It was not an easy read, and there is no way I'd read it again.

Its was a collection of pretty poems, and I did enjoy them, but they just aren't something I think I would come back to. It was lovely to read how much this guy loved his wife, and his poems were easy to read. Beyond that, though, I don't think that I would read them again.

I'm having a bit of a tough time with this book - its turned into a real love-hate thing!
On the one hand, the adventure and the story line are very interesting. The idea of a legacy passed down for thousands of years, and a journey of discovery and revenge are all very compelling for me, and this book (mostly) does them well...
However, there were 17 pages about how they walked through a swamp. It could have been done in 2 pages!

This was a wonderfully dark story! I love the character development of Maika, through the good and the bad, and Kippa was so cute 🖤 The story itself beautifully blended events of the past and present, and lessons about the lore of the world, so you could really imagine it. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here 😊

It's a bittersweet tale of love and loss. Written as a memoir of the time husband Shen spent with his wife Yün before she passed away and set in China around 1770 and 1805(ish). Their love was tragic and romantic. Not my usual read, and dry in parts, but I quite enjoyed reading it. Not something I think I'd ever want to reread though 🤔

Beauty Inside Beast - to say it's one of the longer tales in the collection it felt unfinished. The backstory/flashbacks were too vague, it made a big deal out a series of murders at the beginning then seemed to forget about them... too many unanswered questions 😕
Faescorned - masterfully made a decisively evil character sympathetic. Tragedy abounds, good doesn't defeat evil (not quite anyway) and even though the transition between present ⬇️

The fifth story... I can't say I liked it. It redeemed itself in the last line, but up until then it was a bit of a cringe-fest 😕
It's a story of obsession with overtones of 'be careful what you wish for'

Story 3 - The Queen Of Frost and Darkness - is probably the most like a traditional fairy tale, but like the stories before it in this collection it was the girl saving the guy.
I liked the happy ending, but I was a bit confused about the Evil Princess who seemed to vanish with no explanation making the rescue a little lacklustre and the 'thief girl' who was maybe a touch too convenient 🤔 It was a nice story though 😊

I'm choosing pick because the story itself was brilliant, I just wish I'd been reading it in print!
Genevieve and Beauregard were amazing, as was Jack the Ripper in his madness. It took a little while to get going, and a little longer for me to get all the characters figured out, but it was well written and fun to read.
The name dropping got a little out of hand especially when the characters didn't actually feature half the time!
#TBRChallenge 🖤

Vinjii I tried and was just lost because I didn‘t know who half the people were. What do I need to know to appreciate the book? 2mo
TCLinrow @Vinjii Half of the people it introduces at the beginning are just there to give context or set something up for later. Their names don't matter too much, but you only really realise that quite far in to it. It's a nice story, but it lacks substance in my opinion. It's about a wannabe writer hitchhiking and talking with an old man who led a remarkable life. To say more than that without giving out spoilers is impossible, so I'll leave it there 🤐
