Pickpick

I've been reading this with the kids at bedtime for a couple months. We maxed out our renewals at tbe library because we only read a few pages a night after a few picture books. Nina cried when I told her it would have to go back to the library soon, because she wanted to "keep reading it forever." So naturally I bought a copy to keep ? I think its safe to say they loved it! #raisingreaders

My boys placed several like-new Little Golden Books (Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc) in the LFL at one of our amazing local parks. 💚 Sure hope some little ones take these home and enjoy!

Doing my best to raise a family of readers... Tonight the kids asked if instead of my reading to them at bedtime, they could read their chapter books and I could read mine. Of course, neither of them can actually read chapter books yet but they love to flip through, look at the pictures, and move their bookmarks around. Then they still got to listen to me read a chapter of our current book because it's due back at the library 😂 #raisingreaders

My precious *almost* 10 year old read book one of the Percy Jackson graphic novelizations today. He couldn‘t put it down! ⚡️ Books 2-5 are arriving soon.

PS. He will continue to wear this Pikachu onesie until it literally doesn‘t fit. Look at his wrists … there‘s not much time left. 😂

Reinstating “Reading Club” for the summer. Today, my 8 year old hosted us in his bedroom. 🤩 That‘s him in the loft reading a Dork Diaries book. He loves that series but refuses to be seen reading them in public because they‘re “girl books” and he‘s worried he‘ll be made fun of. I always tell him they‘re middle grade stories for ANY kid, and it‘s cool he likes books with a female protagonist. Normalize reading whatever you like!!

AlaMich Kid me loves that loft bed!!! 1mo
britt_brooke @AlaMich Isn‘t it fun?! Both of my boys have two closets, so my dad helped me covert the extras into reading lofts. 1mo
mdm139 I told my boys there are no “girl” books and “boy” books, there are books that have a girl main character and books with boy main characters. I am a girl but I read books with boy main characters and that doesn‘t mean I am less of a girl. And if any one makes fun of you tell them that. And I expect them to read whatever they want without worrying about what others think, because they will be the better people and readers. 1mo

Kappadeemom I want a reading loft 🤣 1mo
britt_brooke @mdm139 100%, everything you said!! 1mo
britt_brooke @Kappadeemom Me, too! 😂 1mo
KathyWheeler My son loved The Mists of Avalon but was occasionally worried that others would think it was a “girly” book. I told him the only thing that mattered about a book was whether he found the characters and the story interesting and compelling. Nobody else‘s opinion mattered. (edited) 1mo
KathyWheeler @mdm139 you know, most girls read that way — whether the protagonist is a boy or a girl doesn‘t matter, but we as a society have managed to convince boys that reading about girls somehow makes them less of a boy. Argh! 1mo
mdm139 @KathyWheeler toxic masculinity starts early 1mo
britt_brooke @mdm139 @KathyWheeler Sure does. It‘s obnoxious, and I see it in our kids‘ friends, and their dads, often. It‘s gross. I‘m so happy my husband is not like that, and we are doing our best to make sure our sons aren‘t either. 1mo
Bookpearl I absolutely love this!!! 1mo
BookwormM Love that reading loft when I am reading I am always the main character in my head so currently I am a male lawyer investigating a friend of the president 🤣🤣 1mo
britt_brooke @BookwormM 😂 My brain does the same! 1mo
PhyllisH @mdm139 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻💕 1mo
Nute How cool is it to have your own reading space? I want a reading loft too! I‘ve seen tables in bookstores displayed as “Books for Boys” and “Boys for Girls.” Why not one big table display of “Books for Middle Grade Readers?” Then the reader can select whatever appeals to her/him. 1mo
britt_brooke @Nute I want one, too! 😄 Ugh, the separation in store displays like that is annoying. God forbid kids makes decisions based on subject or plot or any other reason that strikes them. 1mo
Anna40 I have an 8 year old reluctant reader. He loves books, but not reading on his own. How does your book group/club work? 1mo
britt_brooke @Anna40 It‘s just my sons (8 and *almost* 10) and me. Every day during summer break, we grab our books, pick a reading spot, and read silently for 20-30 minutes. That‘s it! We could probably add a fun snack or a reading log, but we keep it super simple. I think just calling it something like “Reading Club” makes it fun for them. Good luck!! 1mo
Anna40 Thank you 1mo

Is there anything better than reading on the porch at the cabin?! #raisingreaders

Leniverse My kid is a big fan of The Pokémon Adventures. He has every single box set and volume, and has read most of them multiple times over the past years. (He's made me read them too.) 1mo
Magpiegem I have a Pokémon crazy 9 year old here who would kill for a chair like that to read his books in! It looks perfect! 1mo
