January: A Woman Judge's Season of Disillusion | Marie Corbett
105 posts
An intimate look at the life of a female Superior Court judge, January entwines two stories - one personal, one professional - over one challenging, transformative year. In the month of January, The Honourable Marie Corbett is adjudicating criminal trials on childhood sex abuse and other difficult cases. At the same time, she faces the imminent death from cancer of her closest friend, Anne Armstrong Gibson. Recently widowed, Anne must prepare her two young sons for life without her. Marie travels daily between hospital ward and courtroom, reflecting on her own role as mother, wife, and trial judge. Recognizing the limitations of the criminal justice system, devastated by the death of her friend, Marie embarks on a path of self-discovery and faces a choice between civic duty and the life she wants to live.

January was very cold and snowy in my neck of the woods. I think that partially explains the number of books I read. I read more in a month than I have in a very long time! Here‘s hoping this trend continues. Add to that that most of the books I read I rated at 4 or 5 stars, and I‘d say this was a pretty successful reading month!😉📚📚📚

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Nice job! 📚💕 9mo

PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme You are too kind! But I was pretty happy with the results. And I didn‘t even feel all that rushed in my reading. Sometimes when I read more, I feel like I‘m pushing myself to get to a certain number or goal. This felt very relaxed! 😌 9mo

Here is my January summary. I actually stuck with my reading plans for the month. I am known for changing my plans in the middle of the month. Now to set my February plan.

I still like writing things out even though I keep a spreadsheet. Does anyone else do the same? ❤📚

BookHoarder32 I'm up to two planners because I like to write down what I read and check it off.. 9mo
DGRachel Yep! I have my bujo, a spreadsheet, and I log everything in Goodreads. #overkill 9mo
AlaSkaat I use two notebooks. One to write down all the books I've read-keep track of them, another all the books I read and want to read so I can check it off and cross it out when I'm done... gives me satisfaction. Lol 9mo
See All 12 Comments
TheSpineView @DGRachel I use GoodReads too and Library Thing. 9mo
TheSpineView @OleAnder Glad I am not the only one! 9mo
AlaSkaat @TheSpineView I love lists. I have so many of them I will soon have to start a new list for 'lists' 😂 9mo
PurpleyPumpkin Yup, I keep a spreadsheet and I note the books I read in my bujo. I love my lists!👍🏽😉 9mo
inthegreensandblues I keep a written annual list of finished books in a journal. I just started using Goodreads too but I'm still going to keep up my paper copy, I'm attached to the ritual! 9mo

17 books read in January👍🏻
9 physical books and 8 ebooks 📖📱

Top 2 Books
Holy Ghost by John Sandford
Don't Make a Sound by David Jackson
😍😍😍

Biggest let downs were The Goldfinch and Little Fires Everywhere 😒

gradcat Great job! But I‘m sad that you didn‘t like Donna Tartt‘s book 🙁 9mo
suzie.reads @gradcat I loved the writing but I just need a bit more from a book. I got a bit bored in the middle, was too long winded. Condensed to a bout 400 pages and I'd of really liked it. 9mo
Addison_Reads I felt the same way about The Goldfinch. 9mo
See All 13 Comments
gradcat She always writes really long books...except for the first one—it was a normal length. Have you read it? 9mo
suzie.reads @Addison_Reads 861 pages where nothing much happens just doesn't do it for me 🙂 9mo
LauraBeth I bailed on Little Fires Everywhere 9mo
suzie.reads @gradcat nearly 900 pages where nothing really happens just isn't for me. She's a beautiful writer and I can appreciate that. I just prefer books where a bit more happens, gritty storylines etc 9mo
suzie.reads @LauraBeth I just don't get the hype about it. Was a nice story just boring. 9mo
Addison_Reads @suzie.reads like you I loved the writing, I thought the premise was intriguing, but so many wasted pages of nothing really going on. I will have to try one of Donna Tartt's smaller books maybe. 😉 9mo
suzie.reads @Addison_Reads that's what put me off so many wasted pages, over analysis of everything. Very talented writer though. Will definitely watch the film. 9mo
MelissaSue81 Ohh! I just loved the Goldfinch, but I do understand the critiques of it. It was slow in the middle I think. But the story really stuck with me. I agree on Little Fires Everywhere. 9mo
suzie.reads @MelissaSue81 it was the middle that ruined it for me. I really enjoyed the beginning and end just lost my way in the middle and definitely switched off. 9mo

Off to a very slow start this year - just haven‘t been in the mood to read much.

But I did get in 3 for #newyearwhodis and liked all of them and loved the first book - thanks for introducing me to new stuff @thegreensofa

Didn‘t like the new Anna Quindlen book but and really didn‘t like the Rory Fleek book (don‘t shoot me - just not my thing but it was for a postal book club so I plowed along!)

#JanuaryWrapup Not too bad! I really enjoyed my reading this month, & quite a few were off my shelves. I read my planned ARCs (Afterlives, S.T.A.G.S., Anatomy of a Scandal, Shadowsong, Orphan Monster Spy), posted reviews for ALL books read ✊🏼 completed all 24hrs of the #24in48, and read books for #LMPBC, and now my #HorrorPostalBookClub (got lots to write tho).
New Challenges - 8 squares on my #LRC, 8 on #popsugar2018
Now for February! 📖🏹❤️
