This was fantastic. There were a couple of eye roll 🙄 moments for me ( there will always be little things in books like these that we can‘t all agree on) but overall it was an excellent read! She just hits you with the hard truths, (many of which I can personally relate to ) and she drives the points home with a blend of well researched facts and life experiences that make this book a must read.

About half way through this one and I don‘t want to put it down. It is a memoir written in short, sometimes single page chapters that make up the larger sections of the author‘s journey through the adoption process. There are tidbits thrown in about the relationships between trees and birds and the basic nature of things used to echo and demonstrate author‘s experiences that I really love. So far this book has been thoroughly engaging for me!

Tamra Adoption is not for the faint of heart! 💜 From reading the blurb it appears the author would agree. 3y
ElleSkel @Tamra Yes unfortunately in this memoir the author is trying to adopt a baby in Idaho and they push her into fostering. What made things so difficult for her was that being a reunification state it was not likely that a foster would become an adoptive parent. This story really sheds some light on how broken the system can be while at the same time teaches us what a gift it can be to be able to help a child in need, even for just a little while. 3y
Tamra I will have to check this one out, though it sounds like a hard read. 3y

This was fun read that focuses on women and sexuality in a playful way. There is some steamy love stuff but most of the sex stuff is just in conversation about the adult toy store two lesbian women have inherited. It had some laugh out loud moments and I recommend it for anyone looking for something light and full of woman power!😀

So happy I tried this one! This book made me feel a bit of every emotion and really opened the door to questions about why people behave the way they do. This was a great story about a heartbreaking time in history.
It is worth it to mention that I alternated reading the hardcover and listening to the audio and the chapters actually lined up! Bonus!

This was really good. I don‘t generally go for romance but this one had all the right things to keep me listening. The audio is read by Julia Whelan (she also read The Invisible Life of Addie Larue and other great titles) so it was an added layer of enjoyment for me since I think I could listen to her read the phone book. A definite pick for fans of When Harry Met Sally. Super fun summer read with just a touch of steamy love stuff.

It took me a while to get through this one, but it was really good. A brutal moment in history is shared with us from a very unique perspective that focuses on the unique relationships between animals and humans. This book makes it impossible to ignore that all living things are affected by war.

I loved the beginning, got stuck in the middle, and was satisfied with the end. Despite its graceful prose, I found myself frustrated by this coming of age novel that leads our MC from one toxic situation to another. This feeling of being trapped was orchestrated well by the author and helped to drive the theme home. Freedom comes in many forms and we see it clearly through Libertie‘s eyes. I just wish I liked her a little more. ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

Oh dear. I wanted to love this, but sadly I share the unpopular opinion that it fell short. Maybe it is because I just finished The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. Maybe it is because I struggle with trying to draw parallels between people in this type of story and get too agitated when things feel contrived. I had a similar issue with Plain Bad Heroines, but I was mesmerized by the writing in that one. IDK. It‘s ok, just not for me.

2. Yes. But i can‘t listen to pop music or anything I impulsively sing along with. Not only can it be distracting, but I then always have a mental connection between the song and whatever is happening in the book.

Apostcardlife Haven't read it, but just curious -- language used by characters, like the mother, or just by the author narration? 3y
ElleSkel @Apostcardlife So I read a lot of horror and language like swearing etc doesn‘t bother me at all. What I meant here was that because it is a 40yr old book some of the descriptions and things used are just no longer ok and made me cringe. Ex. “She looked at him from the floor, her lip puffed to negroid size...” at the time I suppose that was considered fine but it was tough to look beyond that kind of language throughout. It‘s just dated. 3y
ElleSkel @Apostcardlife (ran out of characters) there are also references to minstrel shows and how something was funny because the person had the features of a negro. While it makes me mad I also understand that only 10 or so years prior to Carrie minstrel shows were still considered ok and people used the word negroid freely. The story was great but these issues of language at that time were definitely distracting. 3y

This book is a pick for me but I did struggle to get through it. Each section was divided by voice and for the audio this was great but I did not particularly enjoy any of the characters though and so I found myself watching TV instead of reading. It was thought provoking and the dialogue throughout was full of emotions. I think this is why I HAD to finish it despite feeling a bit detached. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 This was my #doublespin for March.

This one was between a pick and a so-so for me. This book had so much to say and I appreciate it for what it is, but I had a hard time getting submerged in it. I agree with some of the reviews that the overall content was excellent but there lacked balance. It dragged in areas and then the end was a bit rushed with not quite as much closure and answers as I personally would have liked. This was a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me.

Addison_Reads That's how I felt about this one too. I am interested to see any future writings by this author though. 3y
ElleSkel @Addison_Reads me too! I feel like there was so much potential here to really feel for these characters but that it was less about them and more about their situation. Maybe that was the intention and if so then well done but maybe could have dialed back some of the details a bits so we wouldn‘t feel like we were supposed to really get to know anyone. I am definitely curious about this author‘s future work! (edited) 3y

This is my #libraryhaul for March, many of which are on my #BookSpinBingo board alongside some I own that have been on my TBR for far too long.
I am not sure if it is because I am coming off the high of The Cerulean Sea or if it is just the book itself but I can‘t seem to connect with this one even though the message is so strong. Almost done and with all that is happening I want to feel more than I do for the characters. We shall see.

This is the first time I have ever left a not so nice review on Goodreads and I feel kind of gross about it.
I just couldn‘t get into this and it was nothing like The Shining or About a Boy as described. The only way I can describe my feelings for the narrator is with an eye roll. ⭐️⭐️1/2 for some beautiful prose and moments of true horror. Full review was way too long to post here but it is here:

Wow. This book took this tale to a dark but somehow more realistic place and I loved it. 🪓🐛🐇👧
Heads up, it is graphic and not for everyone. Definitely check the Goodreads reviews for CWs if needed because the cover and the innocent nature of the Alice you think you know do not begin to represent the horrors you will find inside this book.

Side note this was not on my TBR but Lost Boy was so good I had to read this one too!

Literary_Siren I‘ve only read one book by her The Ghost Tree and it was amazing! I‘ve got most of her other books on my TBR but I haven‘t gotten to them yet. Mood reader problems. 3y

I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook. It was horrifying but beautifully written and narrated with a message about human nature that I can never un-hear.
Side note: I was Vegetarian/Vegan for years until the pandemic when I slid back into more of a Flexitarian diet. I am back to veggies.
If this had a big impact on you I would also recommend the movie Okja. It is not about cannibalism, but it is in the same vein.
