Stephen KingThe Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah with 10 full-color illustrations by Darrel AndersonThe next-to-last novel in Stephen King's seven-volume magnum opus, Song of Susannah is at once a book of revelation, a fascinating key to the unfolding mystery of the Dark Tower, and a fast-paced story of double-barreled suspense. To give birth to her "chap," demon-mother Mia has usurped the body of Susannah Dean and used the power of Black Thirteen to transport to New York City in the summer of 1999. The city is strange to Susannah...and terrifying to the "daughter of none," who shares her body and mind.Saving the Tower depends not only on rescuing Susannah but also on securing the vacant lot Calvin Tower owns before he loses it to the Sombra Corporation. Enlisting the aid of Manni senders, the remaining katet climbs to the Doorway Cave...and discovers that magic has its own mind. It falls to the boy, the billy-bumbler, and the fallen priest to find Susannah-Mia, who, in a struggle to cope -- with each other and with an alien environment -- "go todash" to Castle Discordia on the border of End-World. In that forsaken place, Mia reveals her origins, her purpose, and her fierce desire to mother whatever creature the two of them have carried to term.Eddie and Roland, meanwhile, tumble into western Maine in the summer of 1977, a world that should be idyllic but isn't. For one thing, it is real, and the bullets are flying. For another, it is inhabited by the author of a novel called 'Salem's Lot, a writer who turns out to be as shocked by them as they are by him. These are the simple vectors of a story rich in complexity and conflict. Its dual climaxes, one at the entrance to a deadly dining establishment and the other appended to the pages of a writer's journal, will leave readers gasping for the saga's final volume (which, Dear Reader, follows soon, say thank ya).

The Dark Tower is tied with IT ("The terror, which would not end for another twenty-eight years-if it ever did end-began, so far as I know or can tell, with a boat made from a sheet of newspaper floating down a gutter swollen with rain") as best opening line

#BookReport
I finished DT Book 5 (Wolves of Calla) & am now about 60 pages into book 6. I'm pretty confident I'll be able to finish Song of Susannah by tonight/tomorrow morning. Wolves of Calla was magnificent, I think it was one of the strongest entries in the series so far & it was a pleasure to see the return of a character from one of my favorite SK books. On a side note the Starbucks holiday cups make me want to do word find puzzles.

Cinfhen I love when Starbucks brings out their holiday cups 💚💚💚 3mo

So I‘m steadily working my way through the “Dark Tower” books. I started reading them nearly 30 years ago (😳) when Stephen King released the first 3 —and then he took a years-long hiatus and I forgot about them. I had to start back at the beginning and I‘m determined to FINALLY finish the series. Finally up to this one (6 of 7). And I‘m not sure if I think it‘s super cheesy or totally brilliant that King wrote himself into it as a character. 🧐

Stephen King's seven-volume magnum opus, The Dark Tower. In this book we learn that Mia has usurped the body of pregnant Susannah Dean, the power of Black 13 in 1999, and that they need to secure the vacant lot of Calvin Tower. Eddie and Roland are in western Maine and find the author of a novel called Salem's Lot, a writer who turns out to be shocked by them as they are by him. I liked this book the best so far and look forward to the last book.

This was an enjoyable entry in the series but found elements of it quite bizarre, especially with the entry of the author as a character in the book. Really enjoyed the coda at the end of the book, but at first thought it was totally factual account of Stephen‘s life not part of the story. So all in all the way this book was written challenged my thinking. The more I get into the series the more I feel I need to reread it for elements missed.

TrishB I struggled with this one this time around, not sure why but glad you felt it too. 13mo

Andrew65 @MinDea Still very intense but off for a couple of weeks but will spend some time in next week to enable me to catch up without other people being around. It hurts, but think I will have to compromise on some of my reading in the new year. I used my credits to buy the audiobooks so can revisit them at some point in the future. (edited) 1y
MinDea @Andrew65 credits? Do you do audible? I have been thinking about doing audible.... Glad you get a couple weeks off though! Sound alike you need a break! 1y
Andrew65 @MinDea I tend to go in and out of audible, but felt I was working so hard I should treat myself and bought a year‘s credit package (24 credits for just over 640, but where possible try to buy when 2 for 3, or get one free special offers). Bought these credits in April and currently got 8 credits left, then will try to cancel as sometimes give you a special offer to get you to stay. Don‘t like the monthly commitment as not as good value. 1y
Andrew65 @MinDea Definitely need a break. Off since Thursday night and keep falling asleep reading over the past three days, which sums up the exhaustion. Hope you get a break. 1y
MinDea @Andrew65 that makes sense! Maybe I'll try to join when they have a deal going on! 1y

Sometimes I can‘t tell whether Susannah is the best character (badass disabled WOC!) or deeply problematic (basically everything her Detta identity says). Anyway all this to say that I deeply enjoyed this bonkers and very meta addition to the series, in which one of the main characters is Stephen King, as a version of himself who might be a god.

G is for Gan, the God of the Dark Tower (the tower is actually his living body). He arose from the Prim, the soup of creation, & spun the universe from his navel.
SK is a kas-ka Gan in our world, one of Gan‘s prophets.
SK is known for his look at evil, for fearsome villains, for plumbing the depths of human cruelty. But there is always some Good worth fighting for in his tales.
Maybe that means he‘s actually an optimist.

GarthRanzz Whoa. So deep for so late at night. 😉 Great addition Laura. I really can‘t wait to maybe finally get through the tower series with the new #EpicKaTetRead. 2y

I was not on board with this book in the beginning. I was getting tired of the characters and, frankly, I was offended as The Reader that King had the audacity to write himself into this book, but I think it reveals a certain kind of vulnerability that we don't always get to see from our authors. Perhaps a kind of visible wish to be acknowledged or loved as much as their characters. So I got on board and grew to really enjoy this book by the end.

Susannah Dean, Dark Tower - Compassionate, strong, first female gunslinger. Can't help but picture Gina Torres as her.
Irene Adler - Sassy, brilliant, badass
Elizabeth Bennet - Witty, outspoken, booklover
Bilquis, American Gods - Don't know if this counts since I *didn't* crush on her until I saw the show because Yetide Bakadi.
Cathy, Wuthering Heights - Yeah, kinda messed up, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
