Second book in this trilogy. Sunny is 13 y/o but her behavior seems mature for her chronological age. Since a year has passed, the story is more mature and complicated. Again there are parts that could be excellent for discussion with minors. I still like parts of this world and love Sunny. Definitely I‘m not the best audience for this trilogy. This book has a rating of 4.23⭐️In GR. My opinion is unpopular. 3⭐️I will finish the trilogy.

An Evil Heart: A Novel | Linda Castillo

First book completed for #Scarathlon is the 15th installment of the Kate Burkholder series. Set in Ohio's Amish country, Kate grew up Amish, but left the community and became a police officer. In the first book, she returns to her hometown as the chief of police. I really, really like this series. Kate is such a human, likable character, and watching her progress as a person has been delightful. Through the books we've learned more of her ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) backstory, and have also seen her begin to mend fences with her brother and sister (who are still Amish). Castillo writes the Amish community so well, presenting them neither idealistically nor cynically, but simply as people trying their best to live life the way they believe it should be lived.

This book, like the others, is pacy and engaging. It does start with a rather gruesome murder, and there are themes of sexual assault, so ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) keep that in mind. While I highly recommend starting this series at the beginning and reading it straight through, this one can be read on its own as well. I'm hoping Castillo still has a lot of plans for Kate's story, because I really look forward to reading a new one every year!!

Gissy That is the #15 in that series. I still will like to read maybe a couple of books first to see who is this character. Sounds good🤗 3h
Bookwormjillk I think I put a book from this series on my list when you posted about it before. Thanks for the reminder. 3h
TheAromaofBooks @Gissy @Bookwormjillk - I definitely recommend starting at the beginning of this series because Kate really does grow as a person!! That said, the earliest books are my least favorite - maybe because I feel like I've gotten to know Kate better as the series goes on? Or are they really not as good? 😂 3h
Andrew65 Love this series. Well done 👏👏👏 2h

intothehallofbooks I love this series! I‘m on the 10th book, so I have a little ways to go to catch up to you, but I love Kate and the other regular characters. 2h
Gissy @TheAromaofBooks If you have continue with the series is that Kate is like Kate “fictional friend” where the relationship has grown 😄 2h

I wanted to read this book for a long time because it is well recommended. I liked but didn‘t love it. I think is too unnecessarily long but I never felt bored because you want to know about these characters. It is about this selected group of unlikable students who attend this special program of classics with this eccentric professor. A murder occurred and you know who did and how from the beginning of the story.⬇️

Gissy (Cont.) So this is a character driven story. I don‘t know about that ending. But I like that academia aspect of books and quotes. It was well written but too long with not much happening, it goes around and around of these guilty destructive feelings experience in different ways by each character. Like a Greek tragedy, no hope just self destruction. The author is the narrator in the audiobook. 3.75⭐️ 3h

I have mixed feelings with this trilogy. I read the first two books. I like the world and the characters, specially Sunny, main character. For what I read, this first book can be read by children from 10 or 12 years old. I‘m not the best audience for this book and I‘m not an expert in the area of children‘s literature. I think some parts should be open for discussion with the younger ones if that is the case. Maybe other adults disagree with me⬇️

Gissy Sunny is albino but in the story something magic happened which for me is like not accepting her true self if that is the message in the book, acceptance. There are parts of physical punishment from parent and teacher and I didn‘t see this part explained or resolved in the story. It was like part of the culture? I don‘t know. Chichi, a 13 y/o girl used to sell things at the market by her own. There are men making inappropriate approaches and⬇️ 4h
tpixie Lots of complicated story lines! 4h
Gissy (Cont.) Chichi called them perverts and laughed at this behavior. My concern is that not all 13 y/o minors will have the skills, experience or maturity to manage this type of behavior. Again, this was not discussed in the story. Chichi likes to smoke because that relaxes her. The minors leave the house at midnight to assist to this magic school. The professor is the one who determined the time so they go without authorization⬇️ (edited) 4h

Gissy (Cont.) Minors in this story goes from 12 to 16. Later the mother knows about Sunny‘s leaving the house but didn‘t ask because this is related with the magic. The professor has such authority that in front of the mother, commands Sunny to take her things and go with him, the mother?...silent. According to author, Akata is a rude word for black American or “foreign born black person” but this is the word used as a title for this trilogy🤷🏽‍♀️⬇️ (edited) 4h
Gissy (Cont.) But my opinion is unpopular, this book and the whole trilogy has a rating of 4⭐️Maybe I‘m too old?😂But I think these topics I mentioned can be good for discussion with minors is a way to interact with them. Too many parts very similar to Harry Potter🤔
But I like Sunny. 3⭐️

Another dark academia. After 20 years, six exstudents will reunite in this isolated place with no signal. Things are not what they seem. They did something 20 years ago and to survive, they need to confess who did it. All characters are unlikable but that is part of the plot.
It was interesting. This topic is common in thrillers so you are going to guess some parts and I found it a little unrealistic. But I enjoyed it, is a fast read. 3/3.5⭐️

At the beginning of this story members of my book club and myself were confused. There are two time lines present and past where the past happened a couple of months before. A dark academia with fantasy elements. Alex didn‘t finished HS, was using drugs with other problematic situations but one day while she was in the hospital, the Dean offered her to enter to Yale University. But, why? Does she have a special skill? ⬇️

Gissy (Cont.) She will be part of a secret society and things start to happen😳 I thought the story was predictable and I guessed that part but then those last chapters were twists after twists that I didn‘t see coming. Leigh has this excellent way to develop “villains” unlikable characters that you just love. The ending was so good that motivates you to continue with the sequel immediately, but I have to wait until next month😩⬇️ 4h
Gissy (Cont.) There is n interesting interview with the author at the end of the audiobook. Leigh Bardugo studied in that university and with the exception of one place the other places are real, of course magic was not real😜😂But she explained why she created the Alex in the way she is, there is some criticism to those elite groups. Fantastic. This book worked for me🤗4⭐️
