The Grammarians: A Novel | Cathleen Schine

This book had me all over the place!

For one, it reminded me of what I was a kid and, too, read a big old dictionary. (I should look into having it repaired, it‘s in pretty rough shape!)

But I found it a little hard to fully connect with the main characters, the twins, as it was a short book and it covered their entire lifetime as well as various family members. At times I was ready to move on, yet found myself tearing up towards the end.

Reading The Regulators immediately after Desperation might not have been fair 😕
I flew through Desperation, creeped out and really enjoyed it. This was just OK for me.

The concept/relationship between the two seemed like it would be amazing, but what I was hoping for/expecting just didn‘t pan out in the Regulators.

I wonder how I would have felt about this one had I read it first. 🤔

madamereadsalot1 I love Desperation too. I tried to start this one right after finishing Desperation but couldn't get into. I put it down figuring I needed a break between. I hope to go back to it, but I don't know if I will. 2w

I was late to the King game and surprised at how much more to his stories there is than the ‘horror‘ he‘s known for. In fact, I‘ve been surprised at the lack of horror in the books I‘ve read. And I take it back! This was all the horror, gore and creepiness I was expecting and from (seemingly) a less popular of his books!
(Not surprising, a multiverse Rose Madder link😉)

I flew thru this faster than any other #chunkster I‘ve read.

Getting back to my morning #booksandbooze hang out.
This was an impressive debut.. so much going on! I think there were some ideas/plots touched on that could have made for stand alone novels as they were a little off the central plot but it was definitely interesting... and graphic! If you‘re into that kind of thing...

irre The second in the series is coming out in Sweden this fall. 2mo

rabbitprincess I think three years ago was the last time I went to the Rockcliffe book fair too! (I'm assuming you're in the Ottawa area?) Haven't been for the past couple of years because I kept having bought lots of books in the UK. Might try again this year though! 2mo
Bookish.SAM Yep @rabbitprincess ... I‘m in Ottawa. I was super bummed last time I went. So crazy busy you couldn‘t move, I had to bail. I think they do a different locations in the building for the spring and fall sales so I must have been going to different seasons than last time. I think the fall one is the good space... maybe... Do you know if any other good book sales in the area? (Not gonna be in the UK any time soon 😜) 2mo
rabbitprincess @Bookish.SAM The spring one is usually at the library and they have tents outside too -- that one I remember being really busy. The fall one's at the public school next door and there's a bit more room to manoeuvre. The book sale I go to most often is St. Matthews Anglican Church held as part of the Great Glebe Garage Sale. We go right when it opens and it isn't terrible crowd-wise. 2mo

This took me forever to listen to. I felt like it took way to long to get to any kind of point.

Again, not sure if it‘s #audio that makes it more apparent than reading (for me anyway) but I found the character‘s dialogue and actions required to push the plot along seemed so unrealistic. Sadly, not for me 😕

Ran through most of it on a Sunday afternoon. Loved it all, which is rarely the case for me with a short story collection. There were creepy and gory tales and mingled in, horrors that can befall those living in rough, poverty stricken areas. The stories definitely had an impact. Loved the Argentinian backdrop. Shouldn‘t have read ‘The Neighbour‘s Courtyard‘ before bed 😱

Just finished watching this series. I really disliked the book (maybe it just wasn‘t great as an audio?) but the actors in the show did a good job of making the completely unrealistic characters a little more believable.
While watching, I was a little distracted (in a good way) by the eclectic sound track so I checked it out on Spotify, and yep, it‘s there. It‘s pretty fun ranging from Led Zeppelin to Tupac to beautiful instrumentals. Recommend🎼

I get that it was intended to be a quick little novella but it was far too rushed for me. Maybe that‘s partly attributable to listening to the #audio vs. print but there could have been a great story here that didn‘t really develop at all for me.
