Read Harder (a Reading Log): Track Books, Chart Progress
Read Harder (a Reading Log): Track Books, Chart Progress | Book Riot
104 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
Created by Book Riot, an online destination devoted to people who live to read, this smartly designed reading log consists of entry pages to record stats, impressions, and reviews of each book you read. Evenly interspersed among these entry pages are 12 challenges inspired by Book Riot's annual Read Harder initiative, which began in 2015 to encourage readers to pick up passed-over books, try out new genres, and choose titles from a wider range of voices and perspectives. Indulge your inner book nerd and read a book about books, get a new perspective on current events by reading a book written by an immigrant, find a hidden gem by reading a book published by an independent press, and so much more. Each challenge includes an inspiring quotation, an explanation of why the challenge will prove to be rewarding, and five book recommendations that fulfill the challenge.

It's a Major Award! ... It is a [book-ish hat], you nincompoop, but it's a Major Award. I won it!

2021 Book Riot Read Harder earned and received. After 5 years, I'm taking a break from that specific challenge for 2022.

BookRiot Read Harder Challenge 2022 has launched!!!!!! But surely I can't do this AND #pop22... especially since I haven't completed any of these challenges since I started doing them in 2018...........

I have some perfect books for some of the prompts already 😶😶😶😶

rockpools I am so tempted. But I promised myself I wouldn‘t sign up for any new challenges next year. But I am tempted! 2mo
arlenefinnigan @rockpools I think it's a lot easier/more flexibly this year, some of the challenges this year felt wilfully obscure. I'm really looking forward to it. 2mo
rockpools Part of me was hoping for something something utterly ridiculous in there, so I could write it off straight away! Sadly not 😁. I do like that this one does as it says and pushes you to read a bit out of your comfort zone. But 24 is too much!! 2mo

CarolynM Some good prompts on next year's list. I'm notoriously bad at completing reading challenges but I might have a go 🙂 2mo
arlenefinnigan @LibrarianRyan I'm hopeful I can finish 4 books before the end of the year to complete it but it's gonna be tough. 2mo

Ok Litsy, I need recommendations. I don‘t read a lot of memoirs and this is the only prompt I have no idea for. Anyone out there read memoirs and has a recommendation that will fit? Or can tag someone that will? Any help is appreciated at this point 😊

Laughterhp I‘m curious if it‘s worth it as well. 2y
cornfedwellread I have a novel subscription because I wanted access to the new books index. I haven't used it as much recently, but the monthly cost is low enough that I don't mind keeping my subscription active so I can use it when I want to. I won some free books from one of the monthly drawings. 2y
Chrissyreadit @Laughterhp they have a free two week trial but I‘m scared I will forget to cancel it. 2y
Chrissyreadit @Jess @rsteve388 @therealdealbeall thank you for responding! I‘m trying to decide what I would use - I enjoy the bookriot podcasts and wonder if the insider one is good too. 2y
janeycanuck I cancelled my membership. I never used the New Release Index. The podcast is made up of two kinds of episodes - Read Harder challenges and what they called “Remixed” which is just two hosts from two different shows talking about something non-book-related like travel or cooking. The Read Harder ones are good, lots of great reading ideas. 2y

I finally got my stats done. Much better month than I originally thought. I started out strong, but man did it slow down at the end.

SaturnDoo WTG. 👍👏👊🙌🎉You sound like me...I started strong and then fizzled out. 2y
LibrarianRyan @SaturnDoo first week back was slow at work. Middle of week 2 we were handed Letters about lit to read, and last week got grants to read. I‘m still reading. Just not anything interesting. 2y
MissAimz_55 Love the way you do your stats. I may do mine next month inspired by this . I never include my challenges in my list but I should 2y

LibrarianRyan @MissAimz_55 thank you. It helps me think I‘m actually getting something done. When it‘s just lists with titles and holes it feels daunting. But when it‘s a stat it just feels different 2y
Louise Wow, you are doing a lot of challenges! Hopefully, there‘s some crossover between them! I‘m just Reading Around The World but constantly tarrying in this country or that because one author leads to another, etc. It‘s the happy kind of tarrying! 🤓📚 2y

I have a problem with sequels. I read the first book, love it, but the sequel and never get it read. I have made a promise to myself to read through some of my sequels. So my #bookspinning list is all the sequels I want to read that I already own. Yes my list is way longer than necessary but it‘s good to have a plan. 😁

If you‘re curious about the order, it‘s by Author.

4thhouseontheleft I have a similar problem! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I love this idea!! I have been so enjoying seeing what parameters people use to choose their list! Thank you for playing along, and I'll be sure to tag you with the magic number on Sunday!! 😁 2y
Catherine_Willoughby Book spinning? How do I get involved (tag)? 2y
See All 18 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @Catherine_Willoughby - I am actually hosting - #BookSpin is the tag you need, and there is more info on my page!! But basically chose a list of 20 titles you want to read, and I draw a random number on February 2 - everyone tries to read that number book from their list!! Feel free to join! 2y
Johanna414 Ugh I do the exact same thing. I made a list last year of all the sequels I need to read and I‘ve been slowly working through it. 2y
LibrarianRyan @Johanna414 I told myself I would do it last year and didn't. So this year man I am going to try. I may have to cut back on some buddy reads and book clubs. 2y
LibrarianRyan @Catherine_Willoughby The host already beat me to it. Yeahhh 2y
Daisey I don‘t read a lot of sequels either. A book has to truly win me over and generally the sequel needs to be easily available. Reading just book one doesn‘t really bother me, but I also have a bad habit of reading 3 or 4 in a series and just never finishing the last couple. That annoys me more. 2y
LibrarianRyan @Daisey yeah, I do that too. that is why some of these books are numbers 4 and 5. or the last book of the series. 2y
Laughterhp That‘s one of my goals this year, to read the 2nd book in series that I enjoyed! 2y
Catherine_Willoughby @TheAromaofBooks I make the list friday . Waiting on deliveries of new books 👍 2y
Linsy I enjoyed the first three mortal instruments, but I never made it to number four either! 2y
LibrarianRyan @Linsy I read them when it was supposed to be a trilogy and I read them from the library. It was not originally disposed to expand. It‘s great it did, but I‘ve never gotten any further. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Catherine_Willoughby - sounds good!! Any time before Sunday works!! 😁 2y
BookNAround I have so many series I am somewhere in the middle of! In fact, what I‘m reading right now is the first in another series since I also have the second one on my tbr shelves. 2y
LibrarianRyan @BookNAround you and I live in the same world. 😁 2y
Linsy @LibrarianRyan Huh, I didn't know that! I don't remember much, just that I flew through them and it felt like a natural end to me. 2y
LibrarianRyan @Linsy I agree it had a nice wrap up. 2y

Guys I am so excited! I just bought a book tracker (by Book Riot) for the first time. I normally like to use Goodreads but I'm down for this! I got it on Amazon.

It comes with a two page spead to review each book, a TBR list, a yearly reading tracker, along with 12 reading challenges. The challenges come with a description, a list of recommend books, and reflection prompts.

Let's not forget to talk about about how beautiful the cover is. ❤📖📚❤

Hey gang! This absolutely beautiful reading log came in November's OwlCrate. I've pondered & pondered how to use it because it's just lovely. However, it doesn't fit the way I plan/record/track books SO I would love to send it to one of you! Please email me at itsthegoodlife15 @gmail if you're interested - first come, first serve! I'm sorry, but US only this time around, & it will probably come media mail, so it will take a bit of time to arrive!!

TheAromaofBooks PS It is NOT the same as the tagged book! 2y

Cinfhen Which one did you find on Amazon?? Because this one is great but not quite how I track my books/ challenges so in case it doesn‘t work..... 2y

The #ReadHarder challenge for 2020 is up already! https://bookriot.com/2019/12/03/2020-read-harder-challenge/

This is the only reading challenge I do. It really helps me diversify my reading and keeps me out of any ruts. This year's list looks like a good one, although there are definitely some categories where I'll be fishing for recommendations. (Anybody know any good books by refugees? Books about climate change?) #ReadHarder2020

effani Also, I have a feeling that the people complaining that the tasks get more specific every year weren't doing it in 2017, which included greatest hits like “A collection of poetry in translation on a theme other than love“ and “A book published by a micropress.“ I made it through that; nothing on this year's list can throw me. 2y

I'm not an ardent fall lover (summer forever, please), but the fact that the Book Riot podcast is doing two episodes per week for fall has me embracing the season wholeheartedly.

I 💗 love💗 this podcast (it might be my favorite) because I love hearing Jeff and Rebecca talk about book world news (it isn't book reviews or TBR fluffing at all - even this episode). Highly recommend.

Cortg I agree! Pleeeeaaaaaase don't go, summer! 🌞 2y
LauraBeth I love the BR podcast and LOVE their fall previews! Even the husband, who claims to hate all of my podcasts, will specifically request the BR podcast when we‘re getting ready to drift off to sleep. He hates books and couldn‘t care less about publishing but he likes Rebecca‘s enthusiasm and Jeff‘s insider baseball. He also thinks Jeff interrupts her too much 😹 2y
Susannah @LauraBeth I agree with your husband. I also think Jeff uses the phrase “confirmation bias” too much. 😁 2y

LauraBeth @susannah oh no - now that‘ll be all I hear him say! 😂 2y

cathipink @Cortg I am noticing the darkness in the morning and evening already 😶 at least the weather has stayed warm in Denver. Is it still warm where you are? 2y
cathipink @LauraBeth @Susannah I agree about the interrupting. I feel like they make a relatively complementary pair when I listen, but it feel strange when Jeff is constantly talking about how little he reads 🤷‍♀️ (I know the book business isn't about reading per se, it just feels weird). 2y
Susannah That‘s interesting,@cathipink. You would think that reading would drive his interest in the book business, though. 2y

All in all I'd have to say it's a good little reading log book but it's definitely not the greatest one I've ever seen. I would however recommend it to anyone looking for a reading journal.

Please read my full review here:
https://thereadingmermaidsreviews.weebly.com/book-reviews/read-harder-a-reading-...

StayCurious Have you tried using an app to log your books? Or do you keep a different type of journal? You read so much I'm just wondering how you keep track 😃 2y
BeansPage @StayCurious I actually have two different ways of tracking my books. The first one is a reading journal such as this. It helps me keep track of notes in order to help me write my reviews as well as publishing info. The other way is with a full size planner/ledger in which I use to schedule my books every month. I schedule both ebooks and paper books in that ledger. 2y

The link is: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1IIVZdd1j151CRLYS7GFQuRLTpLGElLBVy15AuttwaZY/edi...

I shall be reposting all the prompts and talking bout it more in the next few posts.

#BBRC

ImperfectCJ This looks very cool, and like a good chance for me to do some pre-reading for gifts for my kids and my nieces. Questions: Is the goal to read a book for every prompt, or does one choose which set of prompts to complete? Are the sections set up to be done in order (i.e., picture books then early readers then middle grade, etc) or in any order? 3y
LibrarianRyan @ImperfectCJ the goal is to read in all prompts. But there is no order to what you read. If you want to knock them out a category at at time or just compliantly random works as well (how I will be doing it). Quite a few are starting with the picture book prompts because they have kids at home and it‘s the easiest to do. Plus every prompt is open to interpersonal. Just because I was thinking Friends doesn‘t mean 👇🏻 3y
LibrarianRyan @ImperfectCJ you can‘t read a book on making freezer jam. As long as you can explain your interpretation I am cool with it. 😎😎😁 3y

ImperfectCJ @LibrarianRyan Thanks for the explanation and thanks for hosting! I wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting myself into before I committed. And now I know! Well, I know everything except the Friends freezer book reference, but I'm sure Google can help me with that. :-) 3y

LibrarianRyan @jb72 If I ran your library you would. But alas, I am stuck in governement library hades. 3y
SaturnDoo Signed up😁 and already got my personal tracking sheets done in my challenge notebook 👍👍 Thank you so much for hosting/creating this challenge. It covers my favorite genres 💜💜💜 3y
LibrarianRyan @SaturnDoo Yeahhhhhhhh. 3y
LapReader Thanks for encouraging me to read to the children in my life. 3y
4thhouseontheleft Umm, I just put together ideas for the picture list, and I kinda want to start this...now! 😆I'm doing a theme for picture books, choosing books that are diverse, inclusive and/or have a self-empowering message for girls. Found lots of options for every letter except X. 3y
BookishShelly Challenges tend to not work for me, but I think I'll try this one. I already read to my son every night, so picture books and early chapter books are easy. But I rarely read middle grade or YA, so that will fit more of the challenge aspect of this for me.
3y
BookwormAHN I‘ve been looking forward to this challenge since you posted about it a few weeks ago 😺 3y
mabell Yay!! 3y
Soubhiville I registered! This looks fun, thanks for working so hard on it. I‘m looking forward to spending a day at the library reading picture books and young readers! 3y
bibliobard Signed up! 3y
LibrarianRyan Thanks. 3y
Avanders I think this is the first Litsy reading challenge I‘ve signed up for... 🤭🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽 3y
rockpools Hi @LibrarianRyan - I signed up, but haven‘t had a confirmation email. Should I try again? Thanks. 3y
MelissaSue81 Question.. do I have to fill out the form to see the prompts? I don‘t see them and I have a fear of commitment. 🤣 3y
JamieArc @MelissaSue81 I had the same question and have the same fear 😂 3y
LibrarianRyan @RachelO yes please. 3y
LibrarianRyan @RachelO wait, let me check the lis first. 3y
4thhouseontheleft @MelissaSue81 @JamieArc If you scroll back in the #bbrc hashtag, @LibrarianRyan posted the prompts info in a few posts. I looked at that before committing! 😃 3y
LibrarianRyan @MelissaSue81 look unde the #bbrc here on Litsy. The prompts are there. I made graphics for them and posted it a bit ago. 3y
LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft thanks. Beat me to it. 3y
LibrarianRyan @RachelO I just checked and I DO NOT have a registration for you. You dont have to fill in any of the prompts, but you do have to get to the end of all the prompt pages then hit submit. There is also a button so you can get a reply email.

Ryan

IamIamIam Okay, so after a little pressure... or just scrolling through for a few minutes, whatever... I signed up!!! I'm partnering with my kids, Ted and Joanna. 🤣 Again, this is wonderful and thanks so much for putting this together!!!! 3y
rockpools @LibrarianRyan Thanks for checking- got an immediate reply that time. Must have been in muppet mode yesterday- so sorry! 3y
LibrarianRyan 🌟 🌟 🌟@RachelO No sorry's needed. I am happy your participating.

🌟
3y
LibrarianRyan 😁@IamIamIam Yeahhhhhhh. I love that the kids will be involved. The Public Librarian inside this government librarian is happy with glee. 😁 3y
IamIamIam @LibrarianRyan 😘🤗😘🤗😘🤗😘🤗 3y
Jerdencon I just signed up too! Excited to read some of these with my son! And also put in for a partner too! 3y
rretzler I've already planned my reading for the rest of the year to meet various challenges, and I'm not sure that any of my planned reading is going to fall into these categories, and I'm tight on what I plan to finish in 2019. I can't resist a challenge, but I'm not sure it's doable in the 6 months I have of unplanned reading. Still thinking about it because it does sound like fun. I may just sign up for the heck of it, anyway! 3y
LauraJ This sounds so fun! 3y
tpixie Great idea! 3y
Jee_HookedOnBookz I soooo wanna sign up for this but I'm such a slow reader! Do we have to attempt each prompt or just read whatever we can? 3y
LibrarianRyan @Jee_HookedOnBookz read what ever you can. If you complete it woo hooo. And if you don‘t you don‘t. It‘s the attempt that matters. 3y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @LibrarianRyan thank you! Not sure how well I'll do but I'm all signed up! 😅 Thank you so much for coming up with this challenge! ❤️ 3y
Kdgordon88 Couldn‘t resist this. A reason to revisit favorite books from my childhood and those of my kids and maybe find new ones. 3y
LibrarianJen I apologize if this has been asked before but do we have to read the prompts in order, or can I skip around? 3y
LibrarianRyan @LibrarianJen totally skip around. At your own pace. 3y
LibrarianJen Awesome thanks! 3y
SaturnDoo I was trying to find this post to ask a question but kept getting sidetracked by some of your other posts 😂🤣😂🤣 finally got here and my question has already been asked and answered 👍😁 now I can go back and look at more if your book review posts 😊 3y
LibrarianRyan @SaturnDoo yeah I have been a bit prolific the last few days. 3y
megnews Is it too late to join in? 2y
LibrarianRyan @megnews absolutely not. Join in. You just can not count any books you read before July 1. Once you register make sure to keep the reply email because that is how you get back into the official form to log your books. There is going to be a prize drawing at the end of this month. You must complete at least one section. 2y

Is it just me or are the people in this particular challenge group a little... uhhh.. intense? I was reading through some of the threads trying to fill in my last few prompts.. (only 7 left!) and goodness gracious people are nasty to one another! That‘s why I love Litsy! Everyone here is so helpful and friendly!

wanderinglynn I sign up for these groups on GR and then never check them! Litsy is just so much more fun with better interaction. 3y
ShyBookOwl Yikes! I'm with you, @wanderinglynn . I never check GR groups anymore. 3y
sammisho Yes! @loveroflit and I did it one year and hated it! Really intense 3y

LoverofLit Yes! I'm so glad I had @sammisho doing it with me so I wasn't alone in realizing that particular reading challenge was not for me. Way too intense and nit picky! 3y
audraelizabeth I do it but dont participate in discussions. 3y
Tamra I just don‘t understand that kind of attitude. 😑 3y
Weaponxgirl I‘ve not looked at the convos on there for ages didn‘t realise it had got like that! I do the challenge as I like that it makes me read outside my comfort zone but I‘ve also never completed it once! And I‘m ok with that 3y
MelissaSue81 @Weaponxgirl - people are especially militant about what constitutes #ownvoices for those categories this year. They‘re also pissy about “author of color” 🙄🙄. I only read the threads for ideas of what to read. I don‘t take it so seriously. 3y
Weaponxgirl @MelissaSue81 that‘s what I was doing before. And jeez, way to put people off reading diversely! But in the very occasional pissy person response I did see people on the reading women challenge just going for every prompt “I‘m gonna read this book by a man” they weren‘t even trolling just really not paying attention. 😆 (edited) 3y

11 weeks into the year, so I thought I'd take a look at my challenges! So far :

#readingwomen2019 : 11/24

#readharder2019 : 11/24

#aussiesrule2019 : 8/24

I don't double dip within a challenge, but I do between challenges. Not bad for one fifth of the way through the year!

Mdargusch Nice! Smart to write each book in a different color. I need to do that now! 3y
Lauredhel @Mdargusch glitter gel pens ftw! 3y
Mdargusch I see that now 😀✨✨✨ 3y
Sue Woohoo, well done! 3y

I finished my #readharderchallenge for 2019!!! I did it about a month faster than last year. Loved the prompts this year. @bookriot

Ok, so I wasn‘t going to do the Read Harder challenge this year but Gail Carriger has created a list based on books she‘s read - and she‘s covered most of the categories. She usually makes recommendations that I like so I‘m going to give it a try this year after all.

https://gailcarriger.com/2018/12/26/read-harder-gail-carriger-fans-miss-carriger...

DGRachel Ooh, fun. Not quite enough to tempt to me, but fun. 😂 3y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel There‘s some on there that I would like to read and at least two that I already own so I‘d be in the right direction to get started. That‘s why I‘m considering it. 3y
DGRachel I totally understand and I say go for it. It sounds like a good fit. I am also fully aware of the fact that I am probably going to end up deciding that I “have” to do the challenge starting in like June or July when I can really stress myself out about it. 😆😆 3y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel That‘s probably the best time to start because there will be lots of recommendations to chose from, including this list! 3y
