Read Harder (a Reading Log): Track Books, Chart Progress
Read Harder (a Reading Log): Track Books, Chart Progress | Book Riot
68 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
Created by Book Riot, an online destination devoted to people who live to read, this smartly designed reading log consists of entry pages to record stats, impressions, and reviews of each book you read. Evenly interspersed among these entry pages are 12 challenges inspired by Book Riot's annual Read Harder initiative, which began in 2015 to encourage readers to pick up passed-over books, try out new genres, and choose titles from a wider range of voices and perspectives. Indulge your inner book nerd and read a book about books, get a new perspective on current events by reading a book written by an immigrant, find a hidden gem by reading a book published by an independent press, and so much more. Each challenge includes an inspiring quotation, an explanation of why the challenge will prove to be rewarding, and five book recommendations that fulfill the challenge.

Today I and several others kick off the Birth and Beyond Reading Challenge. It's a year long reading challenge to get you out of your age group of reading. You can still join. There will be prizes.

The link is: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1IIVZdd1j151CRLYS7GFQuRLTpLGElLBVy15AuttwaZY/edi...

I shall be reposting all the prompts and talking bout it more in the next few posts.

ImperfectCJ This looks very cool, and like a good chance for me to do some pre-reading for gifts for my kids and my nieces. Questions: Is the goal to read a book for every prompt, or does one choose which set of prompts to complete? Are the sections set up to be done in order (i.e., picture books then early readers then middle grade, etc) or in any order? 2w
LibrarianRyan @ImperfectCJ the goal is to read in all prompts. But there is no order to what you read. If you want to knock them out a category at at time or just compliantly random works as well (how I will be doing it). Quite a few are starting with the picture book prompts because they have kids at home and it‘s the easiest to do. Plus every prompt is open to interpersonal. Just because I was thinking Friends doesn‘t mean 👇🏻 2w
LibrarianRyan @ImperfectCJ you can‘t read a book on making freezer jam. As long as you can explain your interpretation I am cool with it. 😎😎😁 2w
See All 6 Comments
ImperfectCJ @LibrarianRyan Thanks for the explanation and thanks for hosting! I wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting myself into before I committed. And now I know! Well, I know everything except the Friends freezer book reference, but I'm sure Google can help me with that. :-) 2w
LibrarianRyan @ImperfectCJ https://youtu.be/wC-j-zm2Vh8. Little Women ends up In the freezer as well. 2w
ImperfectCJ @LibrarianRyan Ahh...now I get it! 2w

I listen to a LOT of bookish podcasts, so it‘s really hard for me to choose a fave. But Get Booked is definitely in my top 5. What is YOUR fave bookish podcast?

SitsWithaBook I will forever miss Books on the Nightstand. Though I still have books on my TBR shelf from their recommendations! 1mo
Brooke_H @SitsWithaBook Oh yes! My very first bookish podcast. Sigh. 1mo

Repost for @LibrarianRyan :
Signups are now open for the Birth and Beyond Reading Challene #BBRC.

It is a year long reading challenge to get you reading out of your comfort zone and from different age perspective.

Throughout the year there will be prizes. Everyone is welcome. Feel Free to share.

Liz_M @LibrarianRyan I'm curious. What is the challenge? Read books based on publication dates? Read books based on target-reader age? The post & the introduction on the linked page don't seem to say. (edited) 1mo
LibrarianRyan @Liz_M The Challenges are divided up into 6 sections: Picture Books, ER, Middle Grade, YA, Adult, and eveything else. Each section has various prompts. Like picture books are a-z. One for every letter of the alphabet. You can see all the prompts by checking out the #BBRC hashtag as I have make challenge graphics, or when you move forward through the second part of the google form they show up. 1mo
Liz_M @LibrarianRyan Thanks, I'll check out the posts (didn't scroll far enough) 1mo

@LibrarianRyan has come up with a great mid-year reading challenge called Birth and Beyond Reading Challenge. I can't participate because I'm way in over my head with reading challenges but I thought I would pass it on. Enjoy

LibrarianRyan Thanks. 1mo

LibrarianRyan 👍@Blaire 😁 1mo
LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft Thank you. The public librarian in me missing SRP and programing in general, so i give it all to my Littens. 1mo
jb72 Count me in! I so wish we had an adult reading program at my library. 1mo
LibrarianRyan @jb72 If I ran your library you would. But alas, I am stuck in governement library hades. 1mo
SaturnDoo Signed up😁 and already got my personal tracking sheets done in my challenge notebook 👍👍 Thank you so much for hosting/creating this challenge. It covers my favorite genres 💜💜💜 1mo
LibrarianRyan @SaturnDoo Yeahhhhhhhh. 1mo
LapReader Thanks for encouraging me to read to the children in my life. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft Umm, I just put together ideas for the picture list, and I kinda want to start this...now! 😆I'm doing a theme for picture books, choosing books that are diverse, inclusive and/or have a self-empowering message for girls. Found lots of options for every letter except X. 1mo
BookishShelly Challenges tend to not work for me, but I think I'll try this one. I already read to my son every night, so picture books and early chapter books are easy. But I rarely read middle grade or YA, so that will fit more of the challenge aspect of this for me.
BookwormAHN I‘ve been looking forward to this challenge since you posted about it a few weeks ago 😺 1mo
mabell Yay!! 1mo
Soubhiville I registered! This looks fun, thanks for working so hard on it. I‘m looking forward to spending a day at the library reading picture books and young readers! 1mo
Shakespearience Signed up! 1mo
LibrarianRyan Thanks. 1mo
Avanders I think this is the first Litsy reading challenge I‘ve signed up for... 🤭🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽 1mo
RachelO Hi @LibrarianRyan - I signed up, but haven‘t had a confirmation email. Should I try again? Thanks. 1mo
MelissaSue81 Question.. do I have to fill out the form to see the prompts? I don‘t see them and I have a fear of commitment. 🤣 1mo
JamieArc @MelissaSue81 I had the same question and have the same fear 😂 1mo
LibrarianRyan @RachelO yes please. 1mo
LibrarianRyan @RachelO wait, let me check the lis first. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @MelissaSue81 @JamieArc If you scroll back in the #bbrc hashtag, @LibrarianRyan posted the prompts info in a few posts. I looked at that before committing! 😃 1mo
LibrarianRyan @MelissaSue81 look unde the #bbrc here on Litsy. The prompts are there. I made graphics for them and posted it a bit ago. 1mo
LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft thanks. Beat me to it. 1mo
LibrarianRyan @RachelO I just checked and I DO NOT have a registration for you. You dont have to fill in any of the prompts, but you do have to get to the end of all the prompt pages then hit submit. There is also a button so you can get a reply email.

IamIamIam Okay, so after a little pressure... or just scrolling through for a few minutes, whatever... I signed up!!! I'm partnering with my kids, Ted and Joanna. 🤣 Again, this is wonderful and thanks so much for putting this together!!!! 1mo
RachelO @LibrarianRyan Thanks for checking- got an immediate reply that time. Must have been in muppet mode yesterday- so sorry! 1mo
LibrarianRyan 🌟 🌟 🌟@RachelO No sorry's needed. I am happy your participating.

LibrarianRyan 😁@IamIamIam Yeahhhhhhh. I love that the kids will be involved. The Public Librarian inside this government librarian is happy with glee. 😁 1mo
IamIamIam @LibrarianRyan 😘🤗😘🤗😘🤗😘🤗 1mo
Jerdencon I just signed up too! Excited to read some of these with my son! And also put in for a partner too! 1mo
rretzler I've already planned my reading for the rest of the year to meet various challenges, and I'm not sure that any of my planned reading is going to fall into these categories, and I'm tight on what I plan to finish in 2019. I can't resist a challenge, but I'm not sure it's doable in the 6 months I have of unplanned reading. Still thinking about it because it does sound like fun. I may just sign up for the heck of it, anyway! 1mo
LauraJ This sounds so fun! 1mo
tpixie Great idea! 1mo
Jee_HookedOnBookz I soooo wanna sign up for this but I'm such a slow reader! Do we have to attempt each prompt or just read whatever we can? 1mo
LibrarianRyan @Jee_HookedOnBookz read what ever you can. If you complete it woo hooo. And if you don‘t you don‘t. It‘s the attempt that matters. 1mo
Jee_HookedOnBookz @LibrarianRyan thank you! Not sure how well I'll do but I'm all signed up! 😅 Thank you so much for coming up with this challenge! ❤️ 1mo
Kdgordon88 Couldn‘t resist this. A reason to revisit favorite books from my childhood and those of my kids and maybe find new ones. 1mo
LibrarianJen I apologize if this has been asked before but do we have to read the prompts in order, or can I skip around? 1mo
LibrarianRyan @LibrarianJen totally skip around. At your own pace. 1mo
LibrarianJen Awesome thanks! 1mo
SaturnDoo I was trying to find this post to ask a question but kept getting sidetracked by some of your other posts 😂🤣😂🤣 finally got here and my question has already been asked and answered 👍😁 now I can go back and look at more if your book review posts 😊 1mo
LibrarianRyan @SaturnDoo yeah I have been a bit prolific the last few days. 1mo

Is it just me or are the people in this particular challenge group a little... uhhh.. intense? I was reading through some of the threads trying to fill in my last few prompts.. (only 7 left!) and goodness gracious people are nasty to one another! That‘s why I love Litsy! Everyone here is so helpful and friendly!

wanderinglynn I sign up for these groups on GR and then never check them! Litsy is just so much more fun with better interaction. 2mo
ShyBookOwl Yikes! I'm with you, @wanderinglynn . I never check GR groups anymore. 2mo
sammisho Yes! @loveroflit and I did it one year and hated it! Really intense 2mo
See All 9 Comments
LoverofLit Yes! I'm so glad I had @sammisho doing it with me so I wasn't alone in realizing that particular reading challenge was not for me. Way too intense and nit picky! 2mo
audraelizabeth I do it but dont participate in discussions. 2mo
Tamra I just don‘t understand that kind of attitude. 😑 2mo
Weaponxgirl I‘ve not looked at the convos on there for ages didn‘t realise it had got like that! I do the challenge as I like that it makes me read outside my comfort zone but I‘ve also never completed it once! And I‘m ok with that 2mo
MelissaSue81 @Weaponxgirl - people are especially militant about what constitutes #ownvoices for those categories this year. They‘re also pissy about “author of color” 🙄🙄. I only read the threads for ideas of what to read. I don‘t take it so seriously. 2mo
Weaponxgirl @MelissaSue81 that‘s what I was doing before. And jeez, way to put people off reading diversely! But in the very occasional pissy person response I did see people on the reading women challenge just going for every prompt “I‘m gonna read this book by a man” they weren‘t even trolling just really not paying attention. 😆 (edited) 2mo

11 weeks into the year, so I thought I'd take a look at my challenges! So far :

#readingwomen2019 : 11/24

#readharder2019 : 11/24

#aussiesrule2019 : 8/24

I don't double dip within a challenge, but I do between challenges. Not bad for one fifth of the way through the year!

Mdargusch Nice! Smart to write each book in a different color. I need to do that now! 4mo
Lauredhel @Mdargusch glitter gel pens ftw! 4mo

#phillylittens The Philadelphia meeting of Book Riot Read Harder Bookclub is being held Sunday, March 24 1p at Frankford Hall
No required reading, just book lovers taking about books they love!

I finished my #readharderchallenge for 2019!!! I did it about a month faster than last year. Loved the prompts this year. @bookriot

Ok, so I wasn‘t going to do the Read Harder challenge this year but Gail Carriger has created a list based on books she‘s read - and she‘s covered most of the categories. She usually makes recommendations that I like so I‘m going to give it a try this year after all.

DGRachel Ooh, fun. Not quite enough to tempt to me, but fun. 😂 5mo
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel There‘s some on there that I would like to read and at least two that I already own so I‘d be in the right direction to get started. That‘s why I‘m considering it. 5mo
DGRachel I totally understand and I say go for it. It sounds like a good fit. I am also fully aware of the fact that I am probably going to end up deciding that I “have” to do the challenge starting in like June or July when I can really stress myself out about it. 😆😆 5mo
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel That‘s probably the best time to start because there will be lots of recommendations to chose from, including this list! 5mo

Happy Friday!!! Happy February!! Here's a brand new #riotgrams

post image

I saw this at the bookstore my aunt (plug! @MidnightBookGirl ) works at and y‘all, this is so good. I now permanently carry it around with me and it‘s great for logging details you know you‘re going to forget, writing reviews, and keeping track of what you‘re reading. I even got one for Unity so she doesn‘t forget what she‘s reading while working at Disney. I highly recommend for anyone who loves reading and tends to read many books at one time.

Everyone in my house is grumpy (& noisy) today, so I‘m taking some ME time to test out a new reading tracker for 2019. I like that the Book Riot Spreadsheet has a comprehensive results section, which makes it easy to view how much I read by gender, genre, etc.

Also keeps my mind off the fact the the sister who was hospitalized in Dec for mono is back in the ER. Poor thing is at school and alone in Pittsburgh, I‘m waiting to hear back from her.

Kathrin I have been using the Book Riot Spreadsheet for years now and have continued to tweak it to track information that I find useful... 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 6mo
4thhouseontheleft @Kathrin Part of me does not want the hassle of tracking outside of GR, but I love this spreadsheet! 6mo
enidkeaner I‘m also using the Book Riot spread sheet and I love it! 6mo

Lcsmcat I‘m sorry to hear about your sister. I hope she‘s ok. 6mo
4thhouseontheleft @Lcsmcat Thank you! Her spleen has been enlarged since she had mono, and luckily they‘ve already ruled out a ruptured spleen. 6mo
Lcsmcat @4thhouseontheleft That‘s good news. 6mo
Slajaunie Oh no! That is awful about your sister. I‘m sure it‘s got you worried sick! So sorry! 6mo
TrishB Hope all is well with your sister ❤️ 6mo
Tamra Oh man, no good. I hope they clear it up this time! And I hope your grouches cheer up. 6mo
LiteraryinLititz As someone with 2 sisters who live in different states, I totally feel for you. Hope she gets some answers soon. 💜 6mo
4thhouseontheleft @Tamra @TrishB @Slajaunie Thank you. 💞💞💞 This was her first week back this semester, and she really hadn‘t recovered enough to go straight into a full course load. I‘m pretty sure she overdid it this week. 🙁 It‘s such a tough spot to be in, she really doesn‘t want to take a semester off, she‘s 1 1/2 years away from graduating. (edited) 6mo
4thhouseontheleft @LiteraryinLititz Thank you! I‘m so mad at her parents (my sisters and I share a birth mother, but were adopted and raised in different families). They live an hour away from Pittsburgh and won‘t drive out to be with her at the hospital. 🤬🤬🤬 6mo
tracey38 Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your sister. How upsetting that her parents won't go be with her. I have been in the hospital for a period of time and no matter how long or short the stay, it's so much worse being there alone. 💜💜💜 6mo
tracey38 Also wanted to say that the spreadsheet looks like a cool way to track reading. 6mo
Crazeedi Get well soon to your sister, one thing is Pittsburgh has excellent hospitals, they say mono takes several months to really recover from 6mo
Elizabeth2 I am loving that spreadsheet too! Sorry about your sister. Wishing her a speedy recovery and that she feels your love across the miles. 6mo
TheLibrarian Sorry to hear about your sister ☹️. Pittsburgh has pretty amazing hospitals. And it‘s crazy her parents won‘t drive out, it‘s not like Pittsburgh has had bad weather lately. 6mo
Reviewsbylola I‘m sorry to hear about your sister. ❤️ 6mo
4thhouseontheleft @TheLibrarian @Crazeedi I love Pittsburgh‘s hospital systems! Both hubby and I worked at Western Psych during college, and we have a few friends who are physicians with UPMC. (edited) 6mo
Hollie I‘m starting that tracker this year, too, and I really like it 6mo
aeeklund I‘m using this new tracker this year, too!! So sorry to hear about your sister! I hope things go well! 💜💜 6mo

SleepyDragon I was tempted, but decided to try to include book entries into my regular journal this year rather than trying to keep a separate journal. Tracking last year prompted me to write more in general, so I'm upping my game with some more detailed trackers. I‘m super pleased with my new reading log! I used to track it with custom planner pages I made for myself, but my planner has so many other things going on that I didn‘t have room for my reading log anymore. So this beauty will carry it all for me.

At last! Or ordered this reading journal and the vegan beauty book on the 11th of December and it‘s only just arrived!
It will be my reading challenge log for the year and the other two books are to help me make better decisions ethically when it comes to my everyday life.

Is anyone else doing the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge? Are you finding it especially difficult this year, or is it just me? I usually have ideas for most of the categories but this year I have no clue... 🤔

nudibranch If it helps, "signs preceding the end of the world" is both translated by a woman and an #ownvoices story from central America. And "American prison" by Bauers, which was on Obama's 2018 reading list, counts for "a book by a journalist or about journalism". 6mo
nudibranch **Bauer 6mo

Happy new year, Litsy! While I didn't quite finish all the #ReadHarder2018 tasks (and had to use a couple of books for two tasks as I got down to the wire), I did much better than 2017. I'm taking a break from the challenge this year, but participating in 2018 did just what I hoped it would: it helped me get my reading groove back. I broke 30 books for the first time in YEARS - maybe I'll break 40 or 50 in 2019? 🤔

post image

I thought I would try the #readharder challenge but this will probably be the one I don‘t finish.

daena I‘m working on this one too 6mo
Samplergal I‘m working on this one. I did it last year. This one appears a bit more challenging for my tastes. 6mo
TheSpineView I did this challenge a few years ago and found that I did not like being cornered into reading stuff I did not care for. 6mo

Happy New Year! 🎉📚
Last year, I completed the Book Riot Read Harder challenge for the first time and was thrilled to see this journal for the 2019 challenge... let‘s do this! ❤️

post image

I am really, really proud of the reading year I had. I have had a hell of a year and gone into hibernation mode more than I should have, isolated myself more than is probably advisable, but I kept my book friends. And a few cherished real friends. And I‘m okay. So take that, 2018, you bastard.

Reading goals and challenges are set, spreadsheet of doom is ready!

Emilymdxn Awesome goals!! I‘m trying to read 50% poc authors, and now I‘ve seen you‘re aiming for 80% women/femme I‘m wondering about upping mine!! The bookshops/libraries near me aren‘t amazing for finding books by poc, do you have any tips for how to make sure you get hold of ethnically diverse books? 7mo
razmanda @Emilymdxn I read almost exclusively from my local library and am very lucky that their collection is diverse. They‘re also pretty game to order most books I request. To find diverse reads to request or track down, I follow @bookriot and especially @FranzenComesAlive. This year, I‘ll end at roughly 105 books and am at 82% women and 49% authors of color. Very few white men got read this year. 7mo
Emilymdxn @razmanda thank you for the great suggestions! I didn‘t make specific goals about women/femme or poc authors this year, then I worked out percentages in December and was on 30something% women and 20something% poc which I was unpleasantly surprised by so I‘m trying to be more deliberate about it next year! 7mo
Annl @razmanda I have to request a lot of books from my library. They get them from other libraries in the county and actually bought one when I requested it. Maybe that is an option for you? 7mo
razmanda @Annl our public library doesn‘t have inter-county loan options but I work at a university that can borrow from other higher ed institutions in the state and have done that a few times. 7mo

CoffeeNBooks @rachelsbrittain Anna Karenina is on my TBR list for the year, too. Not sure if I'll actually get to it, though! 😂 I've never read LoTR, and it was referenced in both of the books I was reading today, so I think that's a sign that I need to read the series this year. 📚 7mo

Anyone doing the challenges in the Read Harder reading log? I got this for my birthday in October, but didn‘t want to start using it until 2019, so now I have new prompts to plan for! The prompts in the reading log are different from the annual #readharder challenges. #rhrlchallenge

charl08 I'd struggle with reread a school book. English lit classes killed the joy from almost everything they touched. 7mo
Lmstraubie I gifted this to myself. I'm going to use it as a resource, but don't know if I'll meet all the challenges. 7mo

Well...I thought I‘d see if I could make my books fit, and with a bit of twisting...because Saga 8 is sci-fi westerny and Huckleberry Finn has a lot about the nature of the river and human nature...I could sort-of make it work🤷‍♀️

So here‘s my completely not-official sort of #ReadHarder2018 challenge ... 😂

Trying to power through this workday so I can really start the holidays. I‘m traveling home to Seattle tomorrow and am hoping to finish my last two books for the #ReadHarder2018 challenge while I‘m at it.

HollyQ I am impressed, for me, 2018 was one long distraction from reading. Made me sad. 7mo

My phone knows me so well, it sent me a map of where my reading log is right now. 😂😂😂

Yay! I didn't realize it had come out early this year! Now I just have to find these. It just gets harder every year too.

My officially submitted #readharder results for 2018!

I actually completed my first prompt reading challenge! Last Spring I printed out the #readharder2018 checklist, and realized that I had inadvertently completed a number of the prompts without even trying. I decided to push myself a little to see if I could actually finish it. And here I am! I don't know if I am going to do the #readharder list for 2019. If I do, I know I won't complete it, as I refuse to read another business book. Cont.⬇️

SleepyDragon ➡️ I am curious about many of the other prompts, though. So I might just do a low pressure personal challenge to just complete the prompts that interest me. We'll see. I still have to decide on my #MtTBRChallenge goal for next year. 7mo

BooksAtNight @Callsie I believe it‘s meant to be a more respectful term for people whose brains work differently in any aspect than your “average” human. So for example, the term could include those on the autism spectrum, those with ADHD, dyslexia, etc. 7mo
Callsie @BooksAtNight thanks!! 7mo
Zil I‘m in! 7mo

So excited to see the reading challenges for 2019. I try to complete @readharder @Liberty and @readingwomen challenges every year. Some of the prompts will take me way outside my lane!

I‘ve already got three reading challenges on deck, but I think I‘ll try to squeeze this one in too (whoops). Who else is participating? #readharder2019
