Incredible memoir. We can never forget......Joe remains a man of God, full of joy and grace. May God bless him. I'm so glad he shared his story.

Oh, how I wanted to love this book. So much potential but the poor writing, the cast of ill defined, indistinguishable characters and omg book spoilers force me to pan this one. Ugh.

I did like Sarah and her reflections on reading but the wacky hijinks of the town were a bridge too far.

lynneamch Well said. Audio was even worse, with accents nowhere close to the Iowans I knew over 30 years. My two Iowa native friends who tried couldn't even finish it. Great premise gone awry. 5y

A go-to author for me going all the way back to the 80s! I'm originally from Minnesota, so I always enjoy the local references. I used to live in an apartment building down the (real) street from Davenport's (fictional) fancy house.

Eta....oops, I fact checked myself. I guess it was the 90s. Eyes of Prey published in 1991.

I love this so much as it speaks directly to a major book title pet peeve of mine. Women being defined in terms of someone else. My local library #opl

Lucy_Anywhere YES - so true. A major peeve of mine is when men are motivated by the death of a saintlike women - either their mother, sister, girlfriend etc... Half the time these women aren't even named. Ugh. 5y

Bailedbailed

It's times like this I want a spoiler. I tried really hard to engage with this book because it ticks all the boxes. But I just can't get into it.

If anyone cares to point me to a spoiler, I'd be ever so grateful....I read up to page 136 which is waaaaay beyond my usual bailing point.

So disappointed....

MelissaSue81 If I could really understand what happened here, I would spoiler it for you, but I‘m not sure I know. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Slajaunie I was confused with this book as well. I don‘t think there is a spoiler because I saw no real plot. 5y
Perfictionist Spoiler alert- it‘s a lot at the end. It turns out that the main character is in a sort of “prison”. He is the only one there voluntarily. There are a whole bunch of prisons all based on unsolved murders. When someone solves it, they are considered rehabilitated for society. But he can‘t leave until he solves it. The woman, Anna, is actually the true prisoner and apparently the worst criminal the world has seen in ages. 5y
See All 9 Comments
Perfictionist Her men had killed Sebastian‘s sister (who was some sort of police who actually caught her) so he went into this prison to torture her more or something?? The man in the mask “hunting” them is actually the warden for the “prison” and has been trying to help Sebastian who has relived this thousands of times and has been in there for like 20 odd years or something. 5y
Perfictionist But after all this he truly believes Anna has changed and wants her to be free too. But mask man says only one can leave. But there was technically two killers. (The real Evelyn was actually her maid) and the woman playing Evelyn was trying to kill her (if I remember correctly) I honestly stopped caring. And her brother was involved at some point with the murder? 5y
Perfictionist In the end, both Sebastian and Anna leave together and I think he chooses not to get his old memories back or something?? In conclusion, It was a waste of my life. 5y
SitsWithaBook Omg, @Perfictionist . Thank you so much! I totally made the right decision to bail. Way too gimmicky for me! 5y
Perfictionist @SitsWithaBook I wish I could be someone to bail but I‘m too stubborn. 😂😂 I seriously have wasted so much time on terrible books 5y
Bookladylinda @Perfictionist I‘m so like that! I just can‘t bale, I stay with the book and then make everyone miserable with all of my whining! 😂 5y
