I did the thing! No, I did ALL THE THINGS. With Her Body and Other Parties, I finished the #readingwomen2019 #readingwomen challenge. This joins #aussiesrule2019 and #readharder2019 #readharder on my completed challenges for 2019! And I'm on track to meet my Goodreads Challenge - currently 4 books ahead.

Hypnotizing Chickens | Julia Watts

Pickpick

Read for the Set In Appalachia prompt of the #readingwomen2019 challenge. This is a lovely, meandering (but not dragging) F/F romance. An English professor returns to her childhood home in the hollers of SE Kentucky to care for her grandma for the summer. People are kind to each other. It was just what I needed. And there are chickens. Don't let the cover fool you - the book is well written. #readingwomen

Scochrane26 I hadn‘t heard of this author, had to look her up. 4y

Having finished #readharder2019 and #aussiesrule2019, I move on toward finishing #readingwomen2019. Here is my challenge so far. Any recs for books in Appalachia, Lambda winners, books from 2018 Reading Women shortlist? Prefer SF, YA, romance, maybe mystery /thriller.

Lindy You might enjoy this Lambda winner: 5y
Butterfinger Congratulations on your finished challenges. I should know some titles for the Appalachia prompt. I'm thinking Kingsolver wrote one that we had to read in college (History of Appalachia course), but it was 20 years ago. 5y
Lindy PS. Ignore the book description when you link to The Gilda Stories. They aren‘t personal essays. Well, maybe they are, if the person writing them is an African American vampire who has lived for centuries. 5y

Scochrane26 For Appalachia, you could count The Animators- it‘s partly set in the area. Or kingsolver—animal, vegetable, miracle. George Ella Lyon writes poetry and shorter books, I like With a hammer for a heart. I might think of others in a few min. 5y
Scochrane26 I knew I was forgetting an important one—Kim Michele Richardson wrote The Book woman of Troublesome Creek. She has a few others, but I think this is her best one. And a nonfiction one I like is What we‘re getting wrong about Appalachia by Elizabeth Catte (?). (edited) 5y
Butterfinger Denise Giardini was the other one we read for my Appalachia course. 5y
Laughterhp I‘m trying to read this one for Lambda winner 5y
Laughterhp I read this for the Shortlist 5y
Lauredhel @Laughterhp oh yes I've read Terra Nullius long ago, it was amazing. Got a signed copy of The Old Lie at a Coleman author event last week! 5y
Jillylovesbooks I read this for the Lambda winner 5y

Starting this one for #readingwomen2019#authorfromnewzealand. My #chunksterstrategy is to both listen and read. That way, I can move forward either way and theoretically finish sooner. Usually works pretty well.

#amreading #reclaimhalfthebookshelf

Amiable I have this one still sitting in my pile—interested to hear what you think about it to see if I should bump it up on my TBR. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Amiable Okay, I‘ll try to remember to tag you once I review. At 850 pages, it‘ll be a week or more. But the reviews seem pretty solid, so I‘m hopeful. 5y
Theaelizabet I‘ve been meaning to get to this one for a long time. Hey, that‘s my chunkster strategy, too! 5y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Theaelizabet I never used that strategy before joining Litsy, and I‘m sure I learned it from other Littens. Maybe from you! 🤓 5y
Becker It‘s my favourite book 🥰 5y

I haven‘t done a #scribdpicks for ages and I‘m wanting to get to this book for my #readingwomen2019 challenge under the prompt book by a Nigerian author.
I think it was you @mhillis who used to be tagged when I did these in the past?
Anyone else wants to know when I find something amazing looking on scribd let me know and I‘ll try to remember to tag you!

SW-T The book sounds both amazing and heartbreaking. It‘s sad to think of how dangerous it is for people to be themselves in some countries. I watched the documentaries God Loves Uganda, Call Me Kuchu, and Born This Way and it was tough. 5y
mhillis Yes, I want to know! Great finds 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T I will try to find those to watch, thanks for the recs (you always have great ones) books like these always feel important to me and don‘t get nearly enough press imo. 5y

11 weeks into the year, so I thought I'd take a look at my challenges! So far :

#readingwomen2019 : 11/24

#readharder2019 : 11/24

#aussiesrule2019 : 8/24

I don't double dip within a challenge, but I do between challenges. Not bad for one fifth of the way through the year!

Mdargusch Nice! Smart to write each book in a different color. I need to do that now! 5y
Lauredhel @Mdargusch glitter gel pens ftw! 5y
Mdargusch I see that now 😀✨✨✨ 5y
Sue Woohoo, well done! 5y

This ticked two reading challenge prompts off for me. But it was much more than that. Mailhot tells us her life in sentences that pack a punch. Their rhythm was hard to settle into, but once I did, her life story just broke me. And then did it again. She‘s just 35, but has been through way harder times than me, that‘s for sure.

mcipher Hope you are feeling better today!! ❤️ 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mcipher Thanks, I am. I‘m supposed to go 24 hours without a fever before I can work again. Of course, my temp went up a tiny bit for 30 minutes. So ... I might have to stay home one more day. Seriously, I‘m going stir crazy! (That‘s a good sign though.) 5y
mcipher @BarbaraTheBibliophage At least it‘s good reading time, right?! Ugh that stinks though. Especially if you are feeling well again! 5y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @mcipher Yeah, I‘m reading plenty. And my temp is back up higher again. Waaahhhh. I might need some retail therapy! 5y
mcipher New books to the rescue! 😆 5y
MelissaSue81 I am considering this one for both of these prompts as well! 5y
Cinfhen This book was a real gut punch. I was really relieved that it wasn‘t too many pages...I don‘t think my heart could have handled much more. 5y
Cinfhen I‘m sorry you aren‘t feeling 100% yet 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I agree. She has survived some intense stuff. Hopefully I‘ll make it all day with no fever. I‘m going stir crazy!!! 5y

I really love this series. As soon as I start entering this world I‘m enthralled and wanting to know more. It‘s the sort of book that reminds me that I love sci fi when it‘s done well! Can I please see this as a tv series? Pretty please? #readingwomen2019 #readharder2019 #readblackwomen

“My people cultivated pain. In a way that god cultivated his garden with the foresight that he could not contain or protect the life within it. Humanity was born out of pain.”

Very powerful, and depressing read. I wish this memoir was read by the author because I don‘t think the narrator did the writing justice.

readordierachel I felt the same way about the narration. 5y
