For nearly two years, almost every Thursday morning, rain or shine, they came to my house, and almost every time, I could not get over the shock of seeing them shed their mandatory veils and robes and burst into color. When my students came into that room, they took off more than their scarves and robes. Gradually, each one gained an outline and a shape, becoming her own inimitable self. Our world in that living room with its window framing...

Wingwalkers: A Novel | Taylor Brown

Carnival tents were sprouting in the Square like overnight toadstools. There was the snake charmer, the bearded lady, the wild man from Borneo, who gnawed on white clubs of ox bone, his ankle shackled to an iron stake driven deep into the earth beneath his tent. One might have witnessed any of these marvels for a dime. But the three brothers who followed the wagon across the Square, marching along the dark, dewcut streaks of its passage like...

What use was algebra? Whatever you did to one side of the equation had to be done to the other, achieving the solution required symmetrical manipulation of the numbers on either side of the equal sign. That concept was irrelevant outside the world of mathematics. In real life, the word equality was just something that sounded good on parchment.

‼️ OLD LADY ALERT ‼️

I am so happy to have found all these episodes of "Murder, She Wrote" on Peacock TV. I have been looking for this show for so long. I love putting it on while I'm relaxing doing other things. Yes, I am very much an old lady at 34 ?

Need to get my hands on some of the books!

“You are good to those who are good to you. […] If people were always kind and obedient to those who are cruel and unjust, the wicked people would have it all their own way: they would never feel afraid, and they would never alter, but would grow worse and worse. When we are struck at without a reason, we should strike back again very hard; I am sure we should—so hard as to teach the person who has struck us never to do it again.”

😳 The scene when the pack of dogs shows up and tries to “put the child down for a nap” for her. I wasn‘t expecting that. I also wasn‘t expecting her sudden rage and retaliation, when she grabs her son and shoos them off. For me, this scene speaks directly to the internal conflicts the MC is facing. This author has thought of the most creative ways to express the mother‘s ambivalent frustration. But I think she loves her child.
