And now on to my #BookSpin pick: #12, An Unconditional Freedom. I'm also going to use this for #ReadHarder2020 task 7: A historical fiction novel not set in World War II. #ReadHarder

Alyssa Cole is almost always a win for me and I particularly loved A Hope Divided, the previous book in the series, so I have high hopes for this one.

#ReadHarder2020: a memoir by someone from a religious tradition that is not your own. #ReadHarder

I like Rabbi Ruttenberg's internet presence, so I knew as soon as I saw this prompt that I wanted to read this book for it. I found it beautiful and inspiring, and it made me want to see how I can deepen my own spiritual life (and half-wish I were Jewish so I could follow more directly in her footsteps).

effani What I don't think this book does, and what the description kind of makes it sound like it does, is meaningfully explain how a person goes from being a hardcore atheist to taking religious practice seriously. I'm not sure that's a thing that you really can explain to someone who hasn't experienced it, so it's not a knock against the book, but I don't think this book would satisfy a reader who doesn't have any urges toward spirituality. 1w

The story is tragic but beautiful. Rivers Solomon takes this horrifying piece of human history and retells it with an unexpected aftermath. The imagery and writing in this novella are amazing.
I am so glad I found this book and it is one of the reasons I love Read Harder. ⠀

Wow. This whole series is a triumph. It's well written, beautifully illustrated, moving, and personal. We are so fortunate that Representative Lewis shared these memories with the world this way. And especially young people today are fortunate to have these texts about the Civil Rights movement - such a powerful contrast to the dull, anodyne way I remember being taught about it when I was in school.

Poets and Writers Magazine is a great resource for poets and writers. It was interesting to read about indie publishers and the writing process for some.

There were things about this book that I really liked and things that didn't work for me. At its core, it's the story of an intelligent young black man in rural North Carolina in the 1980s, and the pressures on him from his family on one hand and his gay identity on the other. Both he and his family are portrayed thoughtfully and compassionately, but the book is ultimately a tragedy.

effani The overall structure of the book was well done, but I never like it when novels have sections written like a screenplay. And as a fantasy fan, I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I think the book would have worked better for me without the supernatural elements.
