Another great adventure for Fetch Phillips, Man for Hire. In a world where magic once ruled and was commonplace, a great catastrophe happened that caused magic to dry up and it just so happens Fetch was that great catastrophe. Now there may be a chance to get it back if only Fetch can come through. I love the Fantasy Noir feel to this series. Give it a try if you like magic and who dun its.
A modern retake on the Fall of the House of Usher. Enjoyed the brooding atmosphere the author created on this one. The reader is left with wondering how and if everything actually worked out or if there is something more sinister still waiting in the wings
Another great one by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. She is as rich in story telling as she is in imagination.
Very cool book with amazing illustrations. Interesting to see all (or at least some of) the stuff we humans have thought of.

Haven‘t posted in a while so I‘d thought I would start back with a new book with one of my favorite characters, Detective Ulf Varg. Love this series (this is the 3rd book in the series) and the characters are so well developed. This is not your typical detective/crime book but much better as he is the head of the Department of Sensitive Crimes. Take time to read this series-you won‘t regret it.
Another good one from Yoss. For fans of Raymond Chandler mixed with sci fi, robots, aliens and other funky stuff

Pandemic read about a pandemic of sleeplessness. Us insomniac prone people already know the helplessness that emanates from a lack of sleep. It‘s interesting to see how such a thing could grip the world and how we would respond and try to conquer the realm of sleep.

Rereading this beautiful book. Magic meets technology. G. Willow Wilson is an amazing writer. All of her work carries an underlying supernatural tone that draws you in and hooks you.

A coming of age werewolf story that isn‘t corny. Over half way through and may be pulling an all nighter on this one
pickOne weird book about the horror of obsession and a mind out of control. The author weaves a tale of slow self destruction and insanity but leaves just enough room to get you to think maybe everything that is said to be false is actually real.
pickThis was just a really fun book! Basically a space repo man running from responsibilities and life until the opportunity to do right lands in his lap. Highly recommend and a great cast of characters.

Poetry has always been hard for me. I never really connected with it and felt a certain failing in that. But, in reading another book, I came across a poem by Wendell Berry. So, I went to the library & checked some of his poetry out and I can honestly say I have found my poetry soulmate. There is a simple ease to his poetry as if each line is parsed and reworked until it is fresh and pops, but in a subdued way. Anyone have other recommendations?

I always enjoy Matt Haig‘s books. This one hit home and has a very good message attached to it. If you‘re feeling like you‘ve done everything wrong, read this book for a little perspective
I love this series. The first book was awesome and so far this one is too. The books revolve around what happens when a world full of magic suddenly becomes devoid of it. The main character, Fetch Phillips, is a man for hire but is inevitably drawn into crazier and crazier scenarios. Riding behind the main story there is a feeling of loss similar to when you‘re a kid and find out Santa isn‘t real and you go from wonder to adulthood.
Lauren Beukes is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This book did not disappoint. Mystery with a bit of magical realism. Great book!
A little hard to follow in a few parts but overall I enjoyed this one.

I‘ve read this one before and wasn‘t really into it. Now I‘m rereading it and love it! Very inventive, weird & with touches of cosmic horror. I‘ve also heard that this is being made into a series on Netflix of Hulu (or something).

This was a deep book that asks if you could do it all over again, would you no matter who you leave behind? This is an unsettling book, but in a good way. Makes you look at your life and be grateful for what you have been given.
Life never ending but futile at the same time. When the “have-nots” are turned into companions for the “haves” they become their playthings. Their consciousness‘s are downloaded and inserted into robots in a never ending cycle of servitude.
Fun book about not being locked into what others think your role in life should be. Rather, live with courage and conviction and take some risks.
An amazing read during the quarantine. If you like magical realism this is definitely up your alley

It‘s been a while since I posted so I‘ll try to post some of the great books I‘ve read or am reading. I‘ll start with this one. I‘m going to call it hopeful apocalyptic. It‘s about when an alternate New York in another timeline butts up against our own. The main character becomes obsessed with preserving the alternate New York culture. One such piece is a book called “The Pyronauts” (which the publisher cleverly hid behind the book jacket).
New book on the epidemic of children disappearing in India and the hopelessness of the poor to get help finding them. Really great writing.
This book was/is amazing! Definitely one of the best I have read in the past few years. Check it out if you get the chance.

So who knew that Hippos, the frontier South and a gang of anti-heroes could work so well together in a book. This book is awesome and the author get kudos for exchanging hippos for horses. 🦛🦛
So I loved Borne (just got through with it last night), so I had to go today and get this one. This is the 2nd in the Borne storyline. I already have the 3rd book , Dead Astronauts, waiting for me on my reading side table!
