The Book of Cold Cases
The Book of Cold Cases | Simone St. James
A true crime blogger gets more than she bargained for while interviewing the woman acquitted of two cold case slayings in this chilling new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel. In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspecta rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion. Oregon, 2017. Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Casesa passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Sheas surprise, Beth says yes. They meet regularly at Beths mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when shes not looking, and she could swear shes seen a girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isnt right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?

Why did no one tell me this was a creepy, scary thriller!!!!!!
Are all Simone St James books this genre? #authoramonth

😱😳😧

Will need to stop reading before sunset and have a alternate happy, comedic book to read before bed or I‘ll have nightmares!

I am a fraidy cat and avoid these kind of books/movies. But I‘m too far into it…and hooked…so will try to finish. 😂

On the upside, I‘ll get the extra points for Scaralthon! #skeletoncrew

Soubhiville As far as I know her books are all thrillers. Definitely tilting into horror sometimes. 7h
Christy2318 Her first 5 books are pretty much 1920s set ghost stories. They are more creepy than scary IMO. Her later books appear to be more thrillerish but I‘m behind on reading those. 7h
Megabooks I think her early books are a bit more HF but with supernatural elements. 🤔 I‘m trying this one. 5h
Megabooks @Christy2318 just read this. I have only read her more recents, but I‘m excited to try an early one. 5h

What a good book! I loved the spooky atmosphere and the ghostly vibe. Several scenes really rugged at my heart strings, but it wouldn‘t be gothic without some tragedy, amiright?

I know it might be odd that I‘m technically recommending a book that I rated a 3.5, but I honestly do believe this book would be well liked by most people. It only felt average to me and otherwise I had no complaints; it‘s an easy-breezy and enjoyable read overall 😄

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
I had a lot of fun with the first half of this. The mystery was intriguing, the paranormal aspects were nice and spooky, and I was really interested in seeing where the story would go. The second half had some issues with pacing that ended up making things less interesting for me by the end, but overall, I still enjoyed it.

I think I enjoyed this book more in the beginning and middle than the end. I don't want to spoil how it turns out so I can't say much really.
Also, not going to lie, the fact that the main character was still so affected by her trauma just didn't seem very believable- it seemed more as if it were plot convenient.
And yes, gratuitous maternity shot. 🥰

Good spooky mystery that goes back to the 70s. How did we all survive without cell phones to report things?🥴. Good read.

This was a great little thriller, super quirky and not at all what I expected...
A crime writer meets a woman who was arrested but never convicted of two murders. I found myself wondering if she'd done it for most of the book.

I would recommend this for anyone who loves a good ghost story.

This started off at 100 miles an hour: true crime blogger persuades possible serial killer into giving her an exclusive interview, which takes place at possible serial killer's house which seems to be haunted. I was hooked. If only that early promise had carried on throughout. It turns out, the haunting side of things is way more interesting than the serial killer mystery side, I wish there had been more of the ghostly visitations. 3.5🌟 (Cont...)

OutsmartYourShelf Beth is a fascinating character & I'm glad we got to hear some chapters from her side of the story. Shea is okay but pales into insignificance beside Beth. I really enjoyed some aspects but was a little disappointed with others, although bonus marks for the cat named Winston Purrchill (he is fine throughout the story by the way). Good but could have been better.

A good solid Simone St. James book that blends a cold case about a female serial killer with the paranormal. Although the ending was a bit abrupt & not all plot pieces seemed fleshed out, I was caught up in the story & engaged.

Pictured with the final “gift” from my Once Upon a Book Club box (pg 337) a red scarf/shawl & little card with a Life Magazine cover of Beth wearing it, which is kind of cool. (The 2 other gifts are in earlier posts.)⬇️

I liked this one better than the other Simones I‘ve read. The serial killer/true crime/cold case elements that drove the plot were well executed, and Simone created some fantastic and complicated characters (Beth, especially), BUT the romance lacked development and overall I found the ghost/supernatural stuff to be kind of silly. Also Shea‘s trauma backstory felt superfluous and I wish there had been more explanation about her true crime blog!

Did you like this ? Does it seem to have too many unanswered questions? Think it‘s on purpose ?

AmyG I enjoy some unanswered questions. But I wish the story had more information on Shea‘s trauma, the romance part. 13mo
5feet.of.fury The end went really fast! I feel like after the slow reveals of the beginning the ending was BOOM BOOM BOOM done. I think Shea going off the cliff after the flashback was a weird way to wrap that up especially 13mo
mcctrish Shea going off the cliff was bizarre 13mo
See All 25 Comments
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I agree. 13mo
mcctrish I feel like the second section we read was the strongest, all the questions and Holy Shits and crazy things. Then a lot of back story in the third and then a plummet to the end in the fourth, literally 🤣🤣 but I still really liked it. I liked the normal ( Shea and her sister, Shea and Michael, understanding Shea‘s complicated feelings of surviving because Sherry? died because Shea hid in a shed) 13mo
Sargar114 It started out super strong and then sorta plateaued for me. Still really liked it. Agree @mcctrish that part was kinda weird…but also kinda very SSJ. When Shea went to the house alone, I thought “oh there is the classic SSJ main character doing crazy things”. 😂 13mo
DanaManiac Did I miss what happened to the groundskeeper guy?? 13mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I agree. I wondered if her mothers dying during this affected her writing .. 13mo
TheBookHippie @DanaManiac No …we never find out 🤷🏻‍♀️. Unless I missed it too! 😝 13mo
Sargar114 @DanaManiac I think they vaguely attributed it to Lily but never specifically said. Considering Shea got dragged over the cliff it seems like they pointed to it without really saying. 13mo
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie oh that‘s a good point, you‘re probably right 13mo
vlwelser I liked this a lot. My brain appreciates the linear logic. 13mo
Kimberlone I did like this one better than the other Simone‘s I‘ve read. The serial killer/true crime/cold case element that drove the plot was spot on, and Simone created some fantastic and complicated characters (Beth, especially) BUT the romance lacked development and overall I found the ghost/supernatural stuff to be kind of silly. Also Shea‘s trauma backstory felt superfluous and I wish there had also been more explanation about her true crime blog! 13mo
DanaManiac @Sargar114 Ah okay, thanks! It was such a specific story that I guess I thought they would say for sure lol 13mo
Karisa @Sargar114 I agree. I liked the first parts more and felt like the end didn‘t come together as much as I‘d like. Overall, I enjoyed it though. 13mo
DebinHawaii This one is not my favorite St James for much of what has already been said, but I enjoyed it a lot & it was a good solid read. I did wish there was more on Shea‘s blog & felt the ending was a bit abrupt but liked the female serial killer mixed with the paranormal elements. 13mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii This is way down on my list. It was fun but I certainly didn't love it like her first novels or The Broken Girls. However if she was dealing with her mom dying it is understandable that she wasn't at her best. 13mo
Hooked_on_books I thought the first half was great, but the back half was a disappointment. The pacing was off and there was too little attention to detail, which kept pulling me out of the story (the unrealistic trial, the “inoperable” aneurysm, Shea using crutches with her arm in a sling [how‘s that supposed to work?!?]). For me this is her weakest book that I‘ve read. (I‘ve read 5.) 13mo
BookwormAHN I really liked it but I've gotten really found of those set around the war. 13mo
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN I am too. These are okay but I truly love her earlier books. 13mo
kspenmoll I liked her earlier books much better. I did not realize she was trying to write this while her mother was dying. She probably had a contract to fulfill? 13mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll Yes and I agree I love her early books. 13mo
kspenmoll I was in NH this weekend visiting my sister who moved from Omaha so am only looking at discussions now. 13mo
mollyrotondo I agree this was her weakest. But I really liked the beginning and the relationship between Beth and Shea. The execution of the ending was a bit lacking but overall I enjoyed reading this one. 13mo

Shea is driving and Beth is dead. Lily or aneurism?

The red shawl Beth sent to Shea after her kidnapper was denied parole. Think Beth liked Shea?

Did Beth use Shea to get the truth out?

AmyG I thought aneurysm but who knows. And yes, I thought Beth did like Shea, in a way. I thought sending her the Mom‘s scarf was wonderfully creepy. (edited) 13mo
5feet.of.fury Beth saying that she was suing Shea but paying all her medical bills. She‘s out of control. Shea seemed pretty assured that Beth wasn‘t really threatening her, and was just gifting Shea that notoriety 13mo
Sargar114 I liked their frenemies relationship. Shea helped Beth and had a strange understanding of her so Beth definitely feels a kinship…but she is also Beth and has an image to uphold haha 13mo

DanaManiac Beth was such a weird character. I guess it makes sense giving her childhood, that her socialization was primarily with a psycho and the trauma she experienced. Yikes (edited) 13mo
vlwelser The whole thing was orchestrated by Beth. From the very beginning. 13mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser She‘s good. 😂 13mo
Kimberlone In her way I think she did like Shea. Beth is an emotionally stunted person so the shawl/scarf and paying Shea‘s hospital bills is her way of expressing that 13mo
Karisa I think Shea and Beth‘s exchanges were my favorite scenes 13mo
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie Damn, girl! You want Lily to have killed EVERYONE! 🤣🤣🤣 I liked Beth & Shea‘s relationship. I think she respected Shea & in her own Beth way, tried to make some amends for using her like she did. The shawl was creepy (I‘ll post my final book box gift shortly, hint!) 😉 13mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii 😂😂😂🖤🖤🖤 13mo
Hooked_on_books Beth totally used Shea to get the truth out. And it wouldn‘t surprise me if Lily had a hand in Beth‘s death, especially since the aneurysm idea was a dumb one. 13mo
BookwormAHN I thought Beth was nuts but yeah she used Shea to get the truth out. 13mo
kspenmoll I agree with @Hooked_on_books Beth totally used Shea. I don‘t think she is capable of relationship of any kind. She is too damaged. Lily seemed to have control over Beth‘s psyche so she may have killed her. The ending wasn‘t very plausible. 13mo
mollyrotondo I think Beth liked Shea. She definitely used Shea to get the truth out. Beth still had this loyalty to Lily even though she knew Lily dead was safer for the world. Beth sacrificed a lot and Shea helped her finally gain freedom. 13mo

Ransom think he saw Lily dead and knew? Or that lily finally killed him?

AmyG Ha! Lily killed Ransom? Oh jeez, I missed that.🤪 13mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG it says he died BUT I WONDER! 13mo
5feet.of.fury Maybe he finally knew it was all unraveling and it was time to go once Lily was found 13mo

vlwelser You maybe went a little extra on this theory. 13mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 😂😂😂💯💯💯 13mo
DebinHawaii @vlwelser @TheBookHippie I like the “little extra.” 🤣 It kept saying he looked unwell so I thought he just died. 13mo
Hooked_on_books I‘m with @vlwelser on this one 😉 13mo
BookwormAHN I'm not sure how he died. It seemed a little glossed over. 13mo
mollyrotondo Yeah I did not pick up on Lily having killed Ransom. I think he was just old and died 🤔 13mo
