The Book of Cold Cases
The Book of Cold Cases | Simone St. James
A true crime blogger gets more than she bargained for while interviewing the woman acquitted of two cold case slayings in this chilling new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel. In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspecta rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion. Oregon, 2017. Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Casesa passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Sheas surprise, Beth says yes. They meet regularly at Beths mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when shes not looking, and she could swear shes seen a girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isnt right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?

Oh my word and we just started reading!!!!!

How you all doing this far in ???

On to 14-24 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

DanaManiac Eager to keep going! Though I should pace myself since it‘ll be an entire week before I can discuss with anyone lol 4d
Mollyanna Can‘t wait to keep reading. This is my first SSJ and #SundayBuddyRead and I am really enjoying it. Thanks for hosting @TheBookHippie 4d
TheBookHippie @Mollyanna Welcome!!! I hope you have as much fun as we do ! Simone is a favorite!!! 4d
See All 31 Comments
Karisa @DanaManiac Yep! I try to not read the next buddy read section until at least Wednesday, but this one might be too irresistible! 4d
Karisa @Mollyanna Welcome! 😊 4d
Mollyanna @Karisa Thank you! 4d
AmyG I am really enjoying this one. 4d
DanaManiac @Karisa That a great idea! I might implement that policy for myself 🤣 4d
mcctrish I‘m thankful to have people to chat with about this and Sundays are so awesome now @TheBookHippie 😘😘 I try to wait until Thursday @Karisa so it‘s fresh in my brain and I don‘t go mad waiting to chat but madness seems to be key with this read 🤣🤣🤣 4d
Karisa @mcctrish Exactly! 🤣👏👏👏 4d
Karisa @DanaManiac Trying to resist the book‘s pull is difficult! Going to distract myself with other books 😂 4d
Kdgordon88 So far this is definitely the creepiest of the 3 I‘ve read and so far the hardest to put down. 4d
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I hide my book after I read the section 🤣🤣🤣😅 I wait until Wednesday to read so I can discuss with all the later posters to our discussion ♥️. It‘s going to be difficult this week 👀. I‘m so glad you love our Sundays! I look forward to it all week!! 4d
mcctrish There is so much going on, I‘m breaking out my post it tabs to mark some pages going forward to remember where all the things are 🤓 4d
CoffeeNBooks My library download is only for 2 weeks for this one since it's a new/popular book, so I'm having to read ahead... but I'm taking notes as I read so I don't give anything away during the discussion. I've been busy this week with the new school year, or I would have finished the entire book already! 😄 I'm about 75% done with it. 4d
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks WOWIE back to school!!! Good luck!!! We go back August 31. 4d
TheBookHippie @Kdgordon88 it is creepy. The Haunting of Maddy Clare is still creepiest to me. 4d
vlwelser So. Hard. To. Stop. Reading. 4d
BookwormAHN I already read ahead some, accidentally of course 😸 3d
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I SO AGREE!!! I still maintain we get so much more by slowing it down and reading in sections! I think more on it! Ha. 3d
vlwelser Agreed. Normally I would blast through a book like this and forget most of it later. I do like this better. And the anticipation.... 3d
TheBookHippie @vlwelser Right the anticipation is the most fun! 3d
DebinHawaii I try to wait & read the Saturday before the discussion but sometimes it‘s hard to wait. With this one too, I got a Once Upon a Bookclub box that has gifts attached by page number that you open as you read so it‘s extra difficult. There‘s 3 wrapped gifts & the first is at page 98 (so close!) so I put the book in the box & put it away for the week. I‘m praticing my discipline! 🤣🤣🤣 3d
DebinHawaii @Mollyanna Welcome! I predict you will be reading the rest of SSJ‘s books after this! And joining in on my #SundayBuddyRead picks too! It‘s the best! 3d
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii 🤣🤣 you‘ve way more strength than me and how cool you have that to look forward to!! ♥️♥️♥️ 3d
Mollyanna @DebinHawaii Thank you! I am certainly looking forward to the discussions. The book box you got sounds intriguing. You‘ll have to let us know what the wrapped packages are… 3d
Sargar114 @DebinHawaii I would also love to know what those gifts are, that sounds so cool! Usually I can get away with reading little bit each day to get the section done, I read this section in on sitting last Tuesday…and likely will read there next one tomorrow on our 5 hour scenic train ride 3d
Hooked_on_books I got started late so just finished the first section today. Really good so far, but I‘m not surprised! I was reading the part last night where Beth was listening to the noises of the presumed ghost of her mother coming down the hall and I questioned my choices in the dark! 😂 3d
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books OY!!! I read it in the morning!!! Far away from nighttime hours!! 3d

Some random thoughts while reading :

1. The file on Beth would you have looked?

2. Small Sacrifices - anyone read this? Why is this real book mentioned ?

3. Did the mom do it ? Kill the dad?

What are your thoughts ??
What‘s going on ?!?!

DanaManiac I personally wouldn‘t have done it. I think violating someone‘s privacy just for satisfying your own curiosity is awful. I honestly have no idea what‘s going on. Which is why I need to keep reading the second I finish these questions 🤣 4d
Mollyanna I wouldn‘t have looked either and I like that Shea didn‘t look. I don‘t know the Diana Downs case well, and am going to have to refresh my knowledge. I‘ve got to imagine that there‘s a clue there. 4d
TheBookHippie @Mollyanna I have to go back and refresh my memory. 4d
See All 21 Comments
Karisa I‘d never heard of Diane Downs or the book. It has very high ratings on Goodreads and Amazon. It looks like the book was made into a mini series too with Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O‘Neal. Hmmm… 4d
TheBookHippie @Karisa I remember it happening … shows my age. It was all over the news. We only had 6 & 11 news then on 3 networks. People were captivated by it. I think I may have even watched the movie 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤔. I‘m definitely looking up more this week on it. 4d
AmyG I read this book and it‘s a great true crime book. The husband beats the wife. Did Beth‘s Dad do that? Did Beth or her mom kill the father? Was he abusive? 4d
TheBookHippie @AmyG is that this one or the burning bed? 4d
TheBookHippie @AmyG or both 😵‍💫 4d
Karisa @AmyG It does feel like her parents had some secrets. I got the sense there was abuse there too (while showing outward perfection). I‘m wondering about the rest of Beth‘s family? Who leaves such a young person just on her own? Where‘s the rest of her people? 4d
mcctrish I don‘t think I‘d have read the file but who knows. It does show that Shea, who did it read it, was so obsessed that she disregards rules. I probably watched that FF movie back in the day but I remember the burning bed one more 4d
AmyG @TheBookHippie AHHHH, you may be right. I forgot about that one!!! 4d
Kdgordon88 Living 45ish miles north of where Diane Downs committed her crimes we lived and breathed that story. Since this book is set in Oregon that may be the only connection. 4d
TheBookHippie @Kdgordon88 you could be right, could be a red herring! 4d
vlwelser I'm just going with the flow. Experience has taught me that Simone is just going to go down some unexpected path and I am happily along for the ride. Though mentioning a real book seems like foreshadowing. Or postshadowing? Whatever. 4d
BookwormAHN I kind of remember the case but I may look up again. It could be a red herring or clue. 3d
TheBookHippie @vlwelser @Kdgordon88 OR the author of the book mentioned is key.. she writes all creepy true crime 😵‍💫😅🤷🏻‍♀️ 3d
DebinHawaii Living in Oregon at the time, the Diane Downs case was HUGE news. Both the book & mini-series with Farrah Are excellent. I don‘t know if there is an extra clue in there or not, but Oregon people are familiar with the case & Downs shot her children at close range in her car & pretended a black man did it. She turned out to be a cold-blooded sociopath who shot her kids so they would be out of the way so the married guy she was seeing would stay⬇️ 3d
DebinHawaii …with her. I took Shea mentioning just it as an example that actually women can/do commit these types of crimes too. But I would never rule out another clue with St. James. 3d
Sargar114 I agree @DebinHawaii I think the mention of it is just to show that women were capable of cold blooded murder. Also SSJ is clearly a true crime fan anyway given Sundown was dedicated to Murderinos (fans of podcast My Favorite Murder). For what it‘s worth, I‘d be too afraid of getting fired to look at the file but definitely would be tempted! 3d
Hooked_on_books I haven‘t read it, but I have a copy! 3d
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books OOOOO. If you read it report back! 3d

Detective Black was Sheas detective too?
He thinks Beth is innocent
Helping her Shea because she‘s girl A ..

Thoughts ???

5feet.of.fury That was quite the coincidence. I can‘t think of what his ulterior motive would be tho. 4d
mcctrish When I read this I thought is there some long game going on here ? 4d
DanaManiac A small part of me wondered if there‘s some connection or if that was just Shea‘s “in” with the detective. But, the slow reveal of Shea‘s trauma makes me feel like somehow she and Beth are connected apart from her passion for cold cases. 4d
See All 12 Comments
Karisa I had just attributed same detective to small town, but in books there are often fewer coincidences than real life! 4d
AmyG Yes a coincidence but it‘s a small town. Not too sure if he is a good guy or bad. 4d
CoffeeNBooks I just assumed Detective Black was also involved in Shea's case because it's a small town. But now that so many of you are mentioning there might be a connection between Shea and Beth, it makes me wonder. 4d
vlwelser Maybe he thinks she's savvy enough to figure it out. She did survive her own worst thing. 4d
BookwormAHN So many coincidences 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3d
DebinHawaii @Karisa @CoffeeNBooks Same! I don‘t get a bad guy vibe off of the detective yet but you never know with St James. 3d
Sargar114 @DebinHawaii @Karisa @CoffeeNBooks I didn‘t get bad guy vibes off him either…I don‘t think we‘ve met our villain yet (or maybe they‘re already dead?) 3d
Hooked_on_books I thought their scene was really interesting. Both are playing a bit of a game with the other and both know it. 3d

Beth‘s conversation with her lawyer Ransom
What‘s that about ?
What does he know??

📸Barbie Beth 😂

mcctrish I‘m looking forward to Shea talking to Ransom 4d
DanaManiac Whatever Ransom knows, I‘m sure he also knows how unbelievable it is – which is why no one else seems to know what on earth is going on. 4d
Mollyanna I think Ransom may be the keeper of Greer family secrets, lots of them. 4d
See All 9 Comments
Karisa @Mollyanna Agreed. So strange for a lawyer to turn against a client like that. Then Detective Black thinks she‘s innocent. Which is right? 4d
AmyG @Mollyanna Agreed. I think he knows all. 4d
CoffeeNBooks @Mollyanna I think so, too. 4d
vlwelser I think they all know Beth's innocent. But not sure why. Yet. 4d
BookwormAHN That is weird the lawyer thinks she's evil but the detective believes she's innocent. 3d
DebinHawaii I have a dislike of Ransom already. Is he going to be the bad guy or just the secret keeper? 3d

Ghost in the house ? Blood in the sink?
Her phone paused?

What?!?!

mcctrish Shea is just running around turning off taps and stuff 🤯 go back to Beth and say WTF is happening cuz we know she knows. I will be doing a lot of out loud talking while reading this book 😂😂😂 4d
5feet.of.fury @mcctrish right? I‘d be right back in there, “ma‘am, you need a plumber or an exorcist” 4d
TheBookHippie @mcctrish @5feet.of.fury I‘m over here yelling BURN SOME SAGE!!!!! 4d
See All 19 Comments
DanaManiac @5feet.of.fury haha or maybe both! No, but seriously, I don‘t know how she kept it together during that entire scene, because I would have FREAKED OUT! Maybe it‘s her PTSD causing her to freeze when she should fight or flight? 4d
mcctrish @5feet.of.fury but Beth is just sitting there all chill “you look pale, Shea. What‘s the matter?” like she‘s insane and her flippant response to Shea‘s “this house …” “ it‘s horrible, I know “ ( I hear that in valley speak ) 4d
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I keep picturing mellowed out hippie 🤣 just chilling in the chair … 4d
Mollyanna I was a little surprised that Shea didn‘t say more about the faucets and the cabinets. If nothing just to try and read Beth‘s reaction to what she saw/heard. Maybe she‘s afraid Beth will stop talking to her? 4d
Karisa Such a creepy scene! I‘m wondering what her recording captured before being shut off. 4d
Karisa @TheBookHippie Sage smudge is worth a try! Yeah, Beth is just like “normal day” 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🤣🤣🤣 St. James does old, creepy houses so well! 4d
5feet.of.fury @Mollyanna @DanaManiac or that Shea thought she was having a psychotic break. Or something? Idk quite weird. 4d
Mollyanna @Karisa That‘s a good point. Wonder if Shea ever went back to see if there was anything? 4d
AmyG @Mollyanna I thought the same…that if Shea said anything, Beth might stop talking. Iwould have freaked out for sure. Blood in the sink…very Stephen King. 🤣 4d
vlwelser I love Simone. 4d
BookwormAHN @AmyG That's what I was thinking since I has just reread It. 3d
DebinHawaii Yes, I want Shea to go back & listen to the recording. Did Beth pause it or the house/ghost? 3d
mollyrotondo I would have screamed and ran right out of the house. I don‘t know how Shea kept it together. And Beth is so frustrating at times because she clearly knows what‘s going on but she plays all coy. 3d
Sargar114 @5feet.of.fury @DanaManiac definitely both!!! I imagine Beth was almost testing Shea (not that she controls the house, but knows it‘s capabilities) and seeing what her response would be. Regardless this was a fantastic SSJ ghost scene and also the randomly open cupboards??!!! 3d
Hooked_on_books That whole section was so well written. I don‘t believe in ghosts at all and she had me believing those things were happening. Freaky! 3d

Sheas fears -PTSD?

Poor Shea. How awful.

Think Beth knows her real story?

mcctrish I think a few people know the whole Shea story ( more than she thinks and more of the story than we know right now ) 4d
DanaManiac @mcctrish I agree, and I‘m not so sure that Beth isn‘t one of them. 4d
Karisa Oooh, I hadn‘t considered that their past might be connected so closely. Maybe? 🤣 I think I‘m leaving this week‘s discussion with more questions than answers 4d
See All 9 Comments
AmyG Like @Karisa it didn‘t occur to me that their pasts may be connected. Could that be the reason that Beth was willing to talk to Shae? 4d
vlwelser I almost don't want to know the whole story. And I bet Beth knows it already. 4d
BookwormAHN I get the feeling Beth knows a lot more about Shea than she's saying. 3d
DebinHawaii They could be connected somehow or Beth just feels a kinship to Shea based on childhood trauma in general as it seems something was going on in Beth‘s house too. Did she research more than just Shea‘s website & that‘s how she knows about her? So many questions! 3d
mollyrotondo I definitely believe Beth knows about Shea. But what that truth is I have no clue 😂 3d
Sargar114 Given Beth‘s connection to the detective on the case…I bet she knows more than she‘s letting in for sure. She seems like she‘s not the type of person to open up to just anyone. 3d

1977
Beth
Hmmm
Guilty ?
Or does she just think she is?
Is she playing a game?
Is she a serial killer?

DanaManiac I don‘t think Beth is guilty, but I do believe that she knows what happened. I think that she may feel powerless against whatever/whoever is responsible, and also that the explanation would be unbelievable. 4d
TheBookHippie @DanaManiac that‘s what I got so far as well but 🤷🏻‍♀️ who knows what that unbelievable story is!!! 4d
Karisa Was she possessed? Did she kill her father too (or did her mother)??? Anything is possible… 4d
See All 14 Comments
kspenmoll Agree with @DanaManiac @TheBookHippie Wondering if there is some supernatural event?! 4d
AmyG Who knows? Too early to tell but I am not so sure Beth is guilty of all three murders. 4d
CoffeeNBooks I'm wondering if it's possible that Beth killed her dad. I was worried about Shea when Beth told her to go to the mansion- I felt like you do when you're watching a horror movie and yell at the main character to stop! 😱 I was very afraid for Shea! 4d
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks I agree it‘s like a horror movie when you yell RUNNNNN!!! 4d
vlwelser What happened to the father? That's my burning question. 4d
BookwormAHN Their is definitely something supernatural going on here. Maybe possession? 3d
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN OOO possession, that's good! 3d
DebinHawaii So many questions ! I think maybe she killed her father but who knows?! Was some SA going on that the other men were involved in too? I thought it was interesting that they were both described as “family men” as it makes me think they were not/hiding something. As everyone is saying, it‘s too soon to tell. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3d
mollyrotondo I don‘t think Beth did it but I do believe she‘s protecting someone 🤔 3d
Sargar114 @DanaManiac @TheBookHippie I agree. I‘m wondering if the mother has something to do with this too…of course something supernatural has to be a part of it 3d
Hooked_on_books I don‘t see anything suggesting she‘s the killer at the moment. 3d

Beth
Best to take the pills before the noises start!!
You‘re not leaving
You‘re not talking
The RULES
HER MOTHER WEEPING IN THE HALL?!?!

WHAT IS HAPPENING ???

mcctrish HOW IS SHE STILL LIVING IN THIS HOUSE!!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4d
DanaManiac Yeah that was bizarre. I wonder if she‘s ever tried to leave, or if she just knows what might happen to her if she tries and has never made an attempt? Also, with her mom crying at the door, if she is a ghost, technically locking her out shouldn‘t work, right? 4d
Mollyanna This chapter terrified me. I don‘t think I took a breath. I have lots of questions about her mother. 4d
See All 17 Comments
Karisa At first I thought it was just all in Beth‘s head, but Shea was experiencing things too. @danamaniac The door thing was freaky! @mcctrish I know right???! This author‘s hero main characters are too fearless. Maybe there is something more with Beth though? Seems like she wants out but can‘t??? 4d
kspenmoll Not sure if her mom is a ghost in the house & is trying to communicate with Beth. All very bizarre for Shea when she visits. Why would Shea go there when she seems to be afraid of people? See Beth alone???? 4d
mcctrish @DanaManiac what does whoever is in the hallway do if it gets in the room? And yes why does a locked door keep ‘it‘ out? 4d
TheBookHippie @mcctrish is it her biological mother and the dead person wasn‘t ?! Ha. I‘m figuring it‘s a ghost or spirit but 🤷🏻‍♀️ can‘t they go through doors? 4d
mcctrish @TheBookHippie so many questions !!!! 4d
AmyG Is the person trying toget in her father? Lots of info needed on the parents. Something is so not right there. Was the father abusive to the mother? His secretary or someone portrayed him as a decent guybut I am not so sure. And her Mom was very unhappily married. In true St. James form…..so many secrets. I love it. 4d
vlwelser So creepy. Not sure how she stays in the house. 4d
BookwormAHN I think I would of burned the house down and run by now. 3d
mcctrish @BookwormAHN I will bring the matches and drive the getaway car 3d
BookwormAHN @mcctrish Sounds like a plan 😺 3d
DebinHawaii Yes, no way would I remain in that house! And under sleeping pills no less. Yikes! I still think Shea will end up staying there with Beth to get her story. There‘s definitely something up with the parents & Beth‘s childhood. 3d
mollyrotondo The rules!!! Uhh something is keeping her from leaving. And the ghost is really upsetting. Does the ghost want help? Is she tricking Beth? Is her father the real villain or the mother? I‘m not sure what is going with that family past. 3d
Sargar114 Absolutely a SSJ novel, main characters staying in places they have no business being, lol! Maybe the room is the one “safe” space in the house 🤷🏼‍♀️. Luckily with ghosts you can kinda make up the rules as long as they remain consistent in the story. 3d
Hooked_on_books Man, she should burn that house to the ground and walk away! But I guess then we wouldn‘t have a story! 3d

Beth Greer
Elizabeth Greer 1977 famous murderer ?!
Can you believe Shea followed her like that?
Also Beth calls her at 1am?

*breaking up a few Beth questions there‘s so many!

DanaManiac Beth calling her at 1am was the weirdest Beth things so far. Like is she such and insomniac that she doesn‘t realize other people sleep? Is she super inconsiderate? Was it a power play? Idk what to make of it! 4d
5feet.of.fury Beth is on her own time 😂 4d
mcctrish I think the 1 am call just cements she‘s off the grid of normal 4d
See All 14 Comments
Karisa Shea was so fearless to follow Beth—a St. James‘ main character trait for sure! 4d
Karisa @DanaManiac Yea, I wasn‘t sure about that either. What she‘s facing at night is so frightening. Maybe it was just a way to feel less alone but reaching out is against her nature. The nighttime/insomnia was her breaking point? 4d
kspenmoll Beth calling her at 1 a.m. struck me as totally weird or narcissistic. I don‘t know what to make of her yet. 4d
AmyG @Karisa Ha! Yes, a very Simone character thing to do. With Beth, yes she is very eccentric. I wonder if she called at that time because she may have felt that if she didn‘t call then, she might never call. Also perhaps Beth felt comfort in knowing that she finally took a step to get the story “out”. 4d
vlwelser I also love this character so far. 4d
BookwormAHN She is definitely on her own time and I'm not sure she ever completely left the 70s. 3d
DebinHawaii She is an interesting character. The 1AM call struck me as a power play, that Beth is in control but I can see some of the other points here too. I am looking forward to learning more about her. 3d
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I keep changing my mind about it!! Was it power, did she even realize it was that hour, did it occur to either one of them that is was strange? 3d
Sargar114 @vlwelser I do too! 3d
mollyrotondo Shea was so gutsy for following Beth lol i was like what are you doing? Lol but I also wondered if Beth calling at 1 am was a power play or was she just scared? She sometimes seems like a scared kid and sometimes she seems like she is has no fear. 3d
Sargar114 I saw the 1am call more as almost an act of loneliness. Maybe the ghosts of the house finally got to her and she‘s seeing her talks with Shea as an escape 3d

Who is Michael ? Is he safe ? Is he the love interest you think ?

DanaManiac I think he‘s safe. Though his descriptions of sociopaths and liars made me wonder for a split second “Is this foreshadowing? Is he describing himself?” 4d
mcctrish @DanaManiac it can all go either way right now ( I want him to be good so badly ) 4d
Karisa @mcctrish I want him to be good too. Shea needs someone to understand her and not be so alone in the world. 4d

kspenmoll I want him to be the good guy for her, someone she can trust from a distance. Just not sure yet. 4d
Mollyanna I‘m hoping he‘s safe… 4d
AmyG My thought was he was a potential love interest. 4d
CoffeeNBooks @DanaManiac That's what I thought, too. I hope he's a good guy, though. 4d
vlwelser Knowing Simone he's either the creepiest dude ever or the love interest. 4d
BookwormAHN @vlwelser Exactly, but I hope he's not a creep. 3d
DebinHawaii @vlwelser Hah! Right?! 🤣 It could go either way at this point! 3d
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii @vlwelser it seems to be that way in her books, either it's the evil one or the love interest or even still someone who ends up being no one!! HAHAHAHA. 3d
Sargar114 My first thought was the love interest. I hope so cause Shea trusts him so far… 3d
mollyrotondo @vlwelser yes! I thought love interest but the more we hear from him but don‘t actually see what he‘s doing the more I wonder if he‘s up to something. 3d

Website is THE BOOK OF COLD CASES!
🎉
Anyone love to investigate or theorise cold cases? Is there any in your town ? Why this obsession for her? Is it soothing for her? A way to control? Is she searching ? Normal activity?

We had a famous one https://www.glamour.com/story/janet-chandler

DanaManiac I can see how it‘s comforting for her to look up cold cases. I feel like many victims ask “why?” and she has her own unresolved trauma to deal with. Looking into getting answers for others may be cathartic without her having to revisit her own experience. 4d
5feet.of.fury I always think of Hotel Cecil where armchair detectives ruined that metal guy‘s life… I think many people aggrandize their detecting skills. 4d
Karisa The Golden State killer was finally caught a couple of years ago due to DNA. It was big news in our area of California. He‘d left at least 13 dead, 50 raped, hundreds of burglaries. He was one to leave taunting notes and was a former cop. 4d
See All 17 Comments
Karisa Her true crime hobby would make me more afraid. Maybe she hopes to solve them or just relates to them as it could have been her? Maybe she would hope that people still cared if it had been her? 4d
Karisa @5feet.of.fury Like the latest season of Stranger Things too… Sometimes people help, but sometimes they get it so wrong 4d
TheBookHippie @Karisa that DNA catch WAS UNREAL!! So so so glad for closure of some sort I bet we will never know his total crime count. So terrifying and gut wrenching. 4d
kspenmoll @DanaManiac you have made some good points. She in some ways must be trying to control her trauma. 4d
AmyG I think her obsession with cold cases gives her a sense of purpose. I also think it gives her something to concentrate on, helps her forget or not think of her own trauma. 4d
CoffeeNBooks @AmyG I agree. It's a way of channeling her energy into something to keep herself from focusing on her own trauma. 4d
vlwelser I bet it centers her. Like researching other people's very worst thing makes her calm. 4d
DebinHawaii I agree with everyone about why Shea likes cold cases. I find them interesting & like to read about them, but wouldn‘t put that kind of time in to try & solve them. There are several in Hawaii. This one on Oahu that was 40 years ago still comes up a lot: https://www.thedailybeast.com/lisa-au-murder-in-oahu-hawaii-still-haunts-honolul... 3d
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii How sad that the parents died before knowing. I imagine the boyfriend did it.......ugh. I do find the cases fascinating as well. 3d
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie So sad! 😭 3d
Sargar114 I like true crime but would never be capable of trying to solve them…I‘ll leave that ti much more clever people than me. Like others said, I‘m not surprised by her desire to dive into cold cases in an effort to gain control of her experience 3d
mollyrotondo @Karisa it would make me more afraid too. I think solving other‘s stories helps her feel like she‘s got control and is overcoming victim status. 3d
Hooked_on_books I find true crime interesting more as a study in human psychology and how it can go wrong rather than the mystery/puzzle aspect of it. I understand Shea‘s interest. I think it‘s a way for her to feel in control of something, as I suspect she generally feels like much is out of her control. 3d

Shea won‘t drive I love her already. I loathe driving … what about you all?
Does her phobia make sense should she try driving ?

Also hibernating sign me up!

DanaManiac I struggle with a fear of driving as well. I‘m in NYC and just wish I could practice more out in the middle of nowhere. So, I get Shea! (edited) 4d
5feet.of.fury I didn‘t learn how to drive until I was 29 due to serious anxiety surrounding it. Didn‘t know the phobia name for it! I like to be able to get myself where I‘m going, so… I think it was a fear worth conquering, long drives still stress me tf out though 😅 4d
mcctrish I get the enclosed space thing of a car with her or being in a vehicle or transportation with other people 4d
See All 17 Comments
Karisa I like driving when it‘s relatively flat land, daytime, and I get to pick the music! (Had a panic attack trying to drive back from Yosemite once. It felt like gravity was pushing the vehicle off the side of the cliff. Horrible. No more mountain driving for me please!) 4d
kspenmoll Her phobia makes sense. After I was in a car accident that took me years to recover from (still some issues), I did not want to drive, I was terrified. I was not the driver in the accident, but it did not seem to matter. Paradoxically I could be a passenger but I had to lie down for ages so maybe it was because I saw nothing of the roads! 4d
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll ugh how awful. Mine didn‘t start until I almost died but had nothing to do with driving. The brain is a weird thing. Trauma is a beast to overcome. 4d
TheBookHippie @Karisa ughhhh scary!!! I had that out in Pennsylvania -no more side of mountains hills tunnels… no just no. 4d
AmyG I only enjoy driving when I know exactly where I am going. I loathed driving in NYC @DanaManiac but did itwhen I had to and was anxious for days before. Again, there is more to Shays story. 4d
CoffeeNBooks I definitely want to know more about Shea's story! 4d
vlwelser I hate driving. But I don't normally mind being in a car exactly. 4d
BookwormAHN I think I may have that. I've tried for years to get over my anxiety with driving but so far no luck. 3d
DebinHawaii I don‘t love to drive—I was in my 20s when I got my license & when I got in an accident several years ago I got anxiety about it again that took a few years to get over. I don‘t like driving at night or when I don‘t know where I am going but I am OK in a car with others as long as I am not crammed in. (My claustrophobia getting involved) While I don‘t think I have a phobia about it—I can relate to Shea. 3d
Sargar114 I don‘t love driving and am a terrible passenger but definitely not as far as a phobia. Mine stems from working in auto claims and seeing the worst case scenario all the time. I love this but about Shea as it totally makes sense and is fitting for her character. I‘m 💯 % predicting it will play a role in the climax of the novel 3d
mollyrotondo I hate driving! I never wanted to learn how to drive. I always knew it was not a skill I had. I did get my license just to make everyone happy but it took a long time for me to actually drive. I do drive now but I have moments when the anxiety comes back and I feel like I can‘t do it. I also take back roads most of the time unless I absolutely need to take the highway. And I don‘t like long car rides especially on a highway. 3d
mollyrotondo It actually makes me feel better that I‘m not the only one with this anxiety. Love this group! 3d
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I love all of us anxiety ridden drivers I never take the highway unless there‘s no other way. 3d
Hooked_on_books My mom has this phobia and it‘s steadily gotten worse over the years. She‘s still able to drive, but won‘t get on any highway. Shea‘s phobia makes sense to me and suggests she hasn‘t worked through her trauma. Therapy probably wouldn‘t be a bad idea. 3d

Shea a newly divorced receptionist listening to a dark comfort read. An excellent explanation for this author Simone Saint James- I find her calming and you?

📸how Simone pictures Shea via her IG page

mcctrish I just went to check out her IG and I‘m loving her thoughts on Michael too ❤️ 4d
Karisa Oooh, I need to check out that insta. I‘ve been so quiet on all other social media except Litsy. I‘m out of the loop (but kind of like it too) 😂 4d
TheBookHippie @Karisa she doesn‘t post often but I stalk it for book news 😅🤣🤣🤣 4d
See All 13 Comments
Karisa At first, I had a hard time warming up to the Shea character. I kept getting Final Girl (Grady Hendrix) I wasn‘t a fan of that book (unpopular opinion). Then as the story went on, I liked her more and more. I want to see more scenes with Shea and Beth 4d
kspenmoll Shea still remains am enigma to me. She too is haunted by her past- we have clues but not her whole story yet. Interesting that she will not look at medical files- shows her honesty & that she is a rule follower. Her obsession with cold cases reveals her secret life- 4d
Mollyanna I like Shea‘s tenacity combined with her vulnerability, but I think we have a lot to learn about her and her motivations yet. 4d
AmyG @kspenmoll YES. I want to hear what really happened to Shea. There is more to that childhood story. I like her alot. 4d
vlwelser Lovely and complex. I already adore this character. 4d
BookwormAHN I like Shea but I also wonder what really happened to her. 3d
DebinHawaii Yep, great character so far but I want to know the rest of her story. Going to check out the IG account too! 3d
Sargar114 I like her as well. I also liked that we got a glimpse into what happened to her…but like @kspenmoll @AmyG said…there‘s definitely more@and I CANT WAIT to find out what it is! 3d
mollyrotondo Shea is still a mystery. I like her but she‘s definitely not revealing the whole truth. 3d

Greer mansion
The house
Julian & Mariana dead!!!!
A ghost walking in it..???
After the first section I went and reread this —how important to the story is this ?

mcctrish I went back and reread the first section because at first I thought the house was empty ( but with a ghost) and then I thought I got that wrong and now I just know I have to wait it out 🤣🤣 4d
DanaManiac I think it‘s important but I don‘t know why…yet lol 4d
Karisa @mcctrish I thought it was an empty/abandoned house too! I can‘t believe she lives there still alone—why?? 😱 4d
See All 16 Comments
mcctrish @Karisa exactly, when I read lived she lived there I was seriously “what, wait?!” 4d
kspenmoll I found it very spooky… when we found out she lived there still I was surprised, especially given the fact that all has remained as it was in the 79s, even her mom‘s clothes. Very strange and sad. 4d
AmyG The house seems to be a character. I, too, wonder why she never left. I sometimes wondered if the ghost was her mother. 4d
CoffeeNBooks It sounds like such a sad abd lonely place to live to begin with, then to find out it's still like it was in the 70s, and that there's a ghost! 😳 4d
vlwelser This house stuff is so creepy. I bet we find out later why she's still there. 4d
BookwormAHN @AmyG I agree the house seems like it's own character. Is it too early to question whether the mother is really dead or not 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3d
DebinHawaii The house is very spooky & seems like a character. I was surprised to find Beth Greer living there but it did seem from a later chapter the ghost (or at least one if there are more) is her mother. Makes me think Shea will end up staying there at some point too. 🤔 (edited) 3d
mcctrish @DebinHawaii that seems like it could happen now that you mention it ( Shea moving in or maybe not being able to get out ) 3d
Sargar114 Super creepy it made me think of the L.A. Murder House https://la.curbed.com/2015/9/21/9920706/los-feliz-murder-house 3d
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 that house is haunted !!!! That‘s all I‘ve ever heard 😅😵‍💫creeeepy. 3d
mollyrotondo So the ghost definitely seems like Beth‘s mom but I was super freaked out by the ghost scenes and Beth just sitting in her room waiting for the ghost to go away. Uhhh 👻 3d
Sargar114 @mollyrotondo I think it‘s her mom too!!! 3d

Good morning. I slept in a bit 😅😂🥱💤

The list
Who has read them all until this one with us or on your own ?

5feet.of.fury I read Lost Among the Living with #SundayBuddyRead and Sundown Motel on my own. 4d
mcctrish I‘ve read The Broken Girls and Sun Down Motel on my own 4d
DanaManiac Good morning! Ahhh I‘ve been waiting for these posts so I can keep reading 😂. I‘ve read The Haunting of Maddy Clare and Silence for the Dead. This by far my favorite so far! (edited) 4d
See All 25 Comments
Karisa @DanaManiac Me too! It was so hard to stop reading! 😂 4d
Karisa I‘ve read them all except Broken Girls. SSJ is fast becoming one of my favorites 4d
TheBookHippie @Karisa everytime we read one I think okay this is my favorite 😂😂😅. I think our first read together The Broken Girls -(four years ago 🤯)-is my favorite. 4d
kspenmoll I have read them all- I think as buddy reads here. Correct me if I am wrong! I cannot chose a favorite!!! 4d
Mollyanna So this is my first SSJ and I‘m loving it. Am definitely going to go through the backlist after I finish this one. 4d
AmyG Thanks to you….me. She has become a favorite….for me, a comfort read. My favorite of hers? The lastone I read. 🤣 4d
CoffeeNBooks The only one I've missed is The Other Side of Midnight, and I'm pretty sure I've read the others as buddy reads with you. Lost Among the Living and The Sun Down Motel are tied for my favorites, and all of the others are tied for my second favorite! 😆 4d
Kdgordon88 I‘ve read Lost and Midnight only. I have some catching up to do. (edited) 4d
vlwelser I read the Broken Girls before I met all of you. Actually, The Sundown Motel was my first book with the group. 4d
TheBookHippie @vlwelser ♥️♥️♥️ We lured you with Simone and kept you! 🤣♥️✊🏼 4d
vlwelser Misty found out I was reading that and pulled me in. So glad it happened too. 4d
BookwormAHN I've read all the others, mostly with y'all 😺 3d
TheBookHippie @vlwelser ♥️♥️♥️ 3d
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN we‘ve had some wild discussions. 3d
Read4life This is my first SSJ. It won‘t be my last. 3d
DebinHawaii I‘ve read them all and all & except for The Broken Girls which I went back to read later, it‘s been with #SundayBuddyReads 🤗 I think The Sundown Motel was one of my first with the group but I‘m not sure. You definitely hooked me with St. James! 🖤 My favorites change all the time too! 3d
Sargar114 @DebinHawaii I had the same reading pattern. I generally favor her modern ones with The Broken Girls being my favorite (Mary Hand might be the scariest ghost!!!) but so far I‘m really enjoying this one!!! 3d
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Mary Hand yes!!! So creepy! 3d
mollyrotondo I‘ve read them all! My first was Lost Among the Living when it first came out. Then my second was Sundown Motel with SundayBuddyRead (my first book with the group!) and then all her others with this amazing group afterward! I read Broken Girls on my own since the group did that one before I joined. I love her so much!! 3d
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I do love her so much!!! Such a huge talent! 3d
Hooked_on_books I‘ve read 4, 3 of which were with you. I wasn‘t paying enough attention and missed the other buddy reads! 3d

Started for #sundaybuddyread and pretty thrilled my nails match 🤣🤣 I am a total scaredy cat and really have no explanation for why I love Simone St. James as much as I do! kspenmoll Perfect match! 6d

Starting a new book yesterday morning, right before starting a home improvement project was a big mistake... I now resent every moment I'm ripping up carpet because I want to be reading...
I guess I'm using it as motivation to get things done?!

Mehso-so

I read this book because of all of the hype. I actually did the audiobook version. It wasn‘t bad, but it wasn‘t for me. I have a hard time with murder mysteries. They seldom interest me. I do like the ghost story that was built in. This book was just so- so for me.

Third book of the summer!
*Every summer since I was 5 years old, my mom and I would have a reading competition titled Summer Reading Marathon. We would see who can read as many books starting from the last day of school until the first day of school. I always won when I was little because my books were so short, but since I started reading bigger books the competition is always fierce.

Pickpick

This was really good! I could have even taken more ghostly presence. It was great and wonderful at it was, bit I especially looked the creepy ghosts even though it didn't seem like it would fit together satisfyingly, and yet,. It was great

My library loan arrived.
I'm a little apprehensive about this one, because it seems like everytime a book is widely praised, I don't enjoy it. But I still how the story sounds so I'm going in with an open mind
