Wizard and Glass | Stephen King
The fourth volume in the brilliant Dark Tower Series is splendidly tenserip-roaring (Publishers Weekly)a #1 national bestseller about an epic quest to save the universe. In Wizard and Glass, Stephen King is at his most ebullientsweeping readers up inswells of passion (Publishers Weekly) as Roland the Gunslinger, Eddie, Susannah, and Jake survive Blaine the Monos final crash, only to find themselves stranded in an alternate version of Topeka, Kansas, that has been ravaged by the superflu virus. While following the deserted I-70 toward a distant glass palace, Roland recounts his tragic story about a seaside town called Hambry, where he fell in love with a girl named Susan Delgado, and where he and his old tet-mates Alain and Cuthbert battled the forces of John Farson, the harrier whowith a little help from a seeing sphere called Maerlyns Grapefruitignited Mid-Worlds final war. Filled with blazing action (Booklist), the fourth installment in the Dark Tower Series whets the appetite for more (Bangor Daily News). Wizard and Glass is a thrilling read from the reigning King of American popular literature (Los Angeles Daily News).

This backstory was necessary and all part of the tower journey. I think it‘s safe to say that King unquestionably captured the essence of passionate young love.

Vivid and descriptive, I found myself transported from my couch right into the pages of Mid-World.

As for the length of this book, I felt there were no wasted pages. Each page added something valuable and necessary to understanding the quest of the tower.

1, tagged - 845 pages 😅

2. Yes, I‘m probably going to finish a book, even if I don‘t like it. So it‘s scary to make that commitment when a book is very long.
Luckily I was rewarded when I read this book because of the satisfactory conclusion of a long book in a long series.

4⭐ I just finished this chunkster of a book for the second time, and man, what a ride. It has my favorite moment in the whole series. Ironically, it is also one of the slowest books in the series for me. Not bad, just slow. But in this slower-paced tale, there are many important details about Roland that can help us better understand him. And what revelations were made in this second reading. I can't wait to continue on to the next one!

TrishB This is my fave in the series. 4mo

The majority of this book is the back story of Roland Deschain, his life in Gilead, his old Ka-tet with Cuthbert and Alain, their time in Mejis. But the story's core surrounds Roland's first love, Susan Deldago.

There's just always going to be one book in a series that's not as good as the rest, this one is mine because I don't think it adds anything to the overall story but it offers a lot of history into Roland‘s character.

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

CuriousG It's interesting how different people are, even though they love the same series. This is my absolute favourite of the whole series! 4mo
TheNeverendingTBR @CuriousG I guess we've all got to have our favourite , I can understand why it's your favourite; it's a great book. My favourite is The Waste Lands. 4mo
KathyWheeler This has always been my least favorite in the series although I will say that, after having read this series several times, I don‘t dislike it as much as I used to. My favorite is either The Waste Lands or Wolves of the Calla. (edited) 4mo

🎧 Here we get Roland‘s origin story.

After surviving Blaine‘s riddle test of death the ka-tet is left in an alternate Topeka KS.

It‘s slow at times but interesting and feels much more like a western than the last two books because there‘s much less of the contemporary talk that you get from Eddie, Susannah & Jake.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3 👇🏻

Twainy The story goes back to the 14 year old Roland who had a raging sexual love affair with Susan Delgado. He is using an assumed name in a small western town with his two friends Alain & Cuthbert. The three were coaxed from their homes by their fathers.

There‘s a wicked witch, a rainbow, a yearly bonfire to burn scarecrows etc.

After the sad ending of Roland‘s story the ka-tet continues down the highway towards an emerald crystal palace.

👇🏻

Reading The Dark Tower for the first time since high school. So interesting the things I‘m picking up on now. God, I love this series. #stephenking

Nute I feel this way about all of his books that I have read. There is so much in his stories. Every reread delivers a new tidbit, and it could be that I am reading them much slower now with a mature eye. When I was a teen, I gobbled them up super fast paced. 12mo

This series is getting better and better. The more of Stephen Kings books I read, the more I find their traces and hints in the Dark Tower books. It's complex, but still easy to read. Deep, moving, unforgettable, even after months of not reading these books, I had no troubles at all finding myself with Roland and the others again.
And of course I fell in love with Oy once again 😻

The actual flashback took me a while to settle into and in the end I did enjoy it but it took a while to get going for me. I must admit to really enjoying the supernatural parts of flashback and the magical elements of the characters.

All in all a decent read. The world building in this series is truly amazing.

In celebration of Stephen King's newest release, If It Bleeds, i'm ranking/reviewing all ten books of his that I've read.

9. Wizard and Glass
Ambiguity is a powerful thing, and i'd argue that Roland was a more interesting character when we didn't know everything about him. A flash back novel would have been fine, if it hadn't been so damn long. Seriously, i don't know how King managed to stretch this much plot out over 700 pages.

TrishB My fave in the series. Could have been even longer and I‘d have loved it 😁 2y
