Definitely recommend this debut novel set before during and after the Emancipation Proclamation. It‘s the meeting of slaves and free Negroes. It‘s a story of freedom and what to do with it. Told through the words of Spring with her ghostly sister by her side yo will be énamourés with this emotional story. Longlist Ed for the Women‘sPrize for Fiction 2019, it‘a must read. #readsoullit

charl08 Agreed, great book. Looking forward to her next one already. 8mo

This was a real surprise. My Sister The Serial killer was fun, fast, and well written. It‘s a debut novel with a twist on how to talk about two fusional sisters and how murder bonds them. Definitely one to check out on audiobook as well. It‘s been longlisted for the Women‘s Prize, although Si don‘t think it will be shortlisted. #readsoullit

Christine I really enjoyed this book, too. (And whatever you baked looks delicious!) 9mo
BrownGirlReading @Christine Thanks! Glad you liked the book too. Chocolate cake!😋 9mo

Praise Song for the Butterflies | Bernice L. McFadden

When Abeo is 9, her father, hoping to atone for bad deeds in the family's past, the leaves her at a religious shrine to become trokosi - bride for the gods. For the next 15 years, she was physically and sexually abused, long after the practice was made illegal. McFadden shines a light on the practice of ritual servitude in Western Africa and the trauma and resilience that it leaves in it's wake. I couldn't put this down. #readsoullit

The philisophy/religion elements went a little over my head at times, although I did think the ideas of how people rely on or seek out a larger meaning during troubling times was interesting. Excellent dystopian - dark, grim. I'm looking forward to reading the next one. #readsoullit

My copy of this book is so pristine because I have owned it since it was first published in 2003! I‘m finally reading it! #readsoullit day 6: in the street.

batsy I've had mine for almost that long, too! And yet to read it 🙈 10mo
Lesliereads @batsy ok, now I don‘t feel so bad! - one of the “hazards” of growing a personal library, I suppose😁. 10mo
BellaBookNook Yay! I‘m not the only one that has had this for years and not read it!☺️ 10mo
Nute This is an unread owned book for me as well! 8mo

Unforgivable Love will be the #readsoullit Readalong in Honor of Black History Month in February. Please join in and use the hashtag this month when you post about Africa-America authors. You can also join the reading group Unforgivable Love #readsoullit readalong in honor of Black History Month over on Goodreads as well as the #readsoullit 2019 reading group.

Chelleo This sounds good! Would also make a great #blitsyhistorymonth title. Is there a new #readsoullit photo or reading challenge? 11mo
BrownGirlReading @Chelleo #readsoullit is a reading challenge in itself to read black American authors during February, uk black authors in October, black authors in general throughout the year. 11mo
Chelleo @BrownGirlReading thanks for clarifying. I feel like there was a photo challenge awhile back. Was that a one-off? 11mo
