Sugar, a prostitute in 19th century London, is determined to lead a better life. #MoneysTooTightToMention , so she decides to find someone who can lift her out of her current circumstances. Enter Mr Rackham. Faber‘s epic story is spellbinding. I read this ages ago but can still remember descriptions of Mrs Rackham‘s wife and how dry Sugar‘s skin is. #RedRoseSeptember

arlenefinnigan Sounds an interesting read! 5mo
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Me too! I still remember the descriptions of the lavender fields. Love this book! 5mo
SauerPatch I‘m glad to see a (good?) review of this. I sometimes wonder what I missed out on because it was a hard DNF for me. :/ 5mo
See All 9 Comments
Librarybelle @arlenefinnigan It‘s a #chunkster , so a big commitment! 😂 5mo
Librarybelle @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Faber seems to have a descriptive flare to his writing. 5mo
Librarybelle @SauerPatch I did like this one! It‘s been at least 15 years since I read it, but I do recall Faber‘s language to be much more literary. Also, the length and the commitment to it seemed rather daunting. But, he somehow grabbed me in his story of Sugar. That‘s why books are so incredible - we each have a different experience with them. I definitely know some who have tried to read this one and just couldn‘t. 5mo
Cinfhen I bought this book because @Centique has not stopped raving about it along with @Reviewsbylola & @Kalalalatja 5mo
Kalalalatja And I won‘t stop until you read it @Cinfhen 😉 5mo

#wanderingjune #londoncalling

If you go #calling in Victorian #london for a call-girl, you might meet our fabulous protagonist Sugar who knows all the ways of wooing. This book shows you behind the scenes and all is not as it seems!

And while we‘re at it - I LOVE The Clash. Probably my favourite band of all time. 😍

BarbaraBB So much London in this book. Great choice. And how cool that you like The Clash so much! 8mo

It‘s #aharddaysnight when you‘re a lady of the night. Sugar is a young lady in Victorian London who is determined to rise in society above her current station as a prostitute in a brothel. This was a stellar 5 star read for me and ranks as one of my favorite books ever. #anglophileapril

Still as wonderful as the first time I read it! This counts as my #RemindsYouofaFavoritePlace, which is London. I bought this book in 2016 while on my literary pilgrimage of UK, and read it during the trip. So many memories connected to this great read ❤️

I DNF this one. I‘m not sure I even got 100 pages in before I was just done. Not sure if I will give it another shot or not.

SumisBooks May I ask what you didn't like about the book? 13mo
OrangeMooseReads @TheReadingMermaid some of it was the writing style I just couldn‘t get into it and the characters were not interesting to me. I‘m a mood reader too so that may have been part of it as well. 13mo
SumisBooks Totally fair enough. I have started reading books sometimes and the timing just wasn't right for me so I put the book down. Usually after I pick it up a second time I will decide whether it's me or the book that's got to go LMAO 😜 13mo
BookNAround I didn‘t much like this one either although so many other people did. I will say, in its favor, they used an amazingly high quality of paper for this one. It felt absolutely luxurious. Too bad the content didn‘t do it for me! 13mo

Kalalalatja @Cinfhen @erzascarletbookgasm @readordierachel this is still my fave book by him. This is one of my favorite books ever. It's about a nineteen-year-old girl, Sugar, who is a brothel worker in 1870s London. After meeting William Rackham, she begins an improbable ascent though the strata of Victorian society. This is a remarkable book that is Dickensian in scope and tells one the richest stories I've had the privilege of reading. Yes, it could be used as a doorstop (clocking in at ~900 pages), but it reads quite quickly.

AmyG I loved this book. 13mo
Alfoster I loved it too! @AmyG 13mo
juliegumdrop One of my all time favorites too! 13mo

And here I go again unable to decide what to read so I start two of the longest books in my collection at the same time. I'm really enjoying this though, the narration is so interesting how it directly addresses the reader and almost makes them a character. I'm loving it so far.

post image

If you‘re going to spend a few days and 830 odd pages in a book, then I can wish for no better character to accompany you than Michael Faber‘s Sugar. Above image is from the TV miniseries (unseen by me), but Sugar looks just the way I pictured her! This novel takes you from the stinking slums to the perfumed drawing rooms of 19th century London and never averts it‘s eyes. But it‘s the characters that keep you rapidly turning pages. A definite pick

Centique I think you‘ll love this character @Cinfhen 😍 14mo
batsy This book took me entirely out of my life when I was reading it... So absorbing and fantastic. 14mo

CarolynM Unpopular opinion...I bailed on this one at 100 pages😐 14mo
Cinfhen I‘ve heard nothing but good things ( well except for @CarolynM 😂😂) but that PAGE COUNT!!! #pagecountphobia 14mo
Cinfhen I might recommend it to my bookclub as our big summer read... that should keep me motivated to read it. Would it be good for bookclub??? 14mo
Centique @Cinfhen I think so. A lot to talk about the changing roles of men and women, class and gender. They‘d have to be comfortable with brutally honest descriptions of sex work and “bawdy” language. It also reads way faster than any other book of this length I‘ve read! 14mo
Centique @CarolynM I can sympathise with that! I think if the characters don‘t grab you in this one, it‘s not going to have any magic for you. Fair enough to DNF. 😘 14mo
Centique @CouronneDhiver thanks so much! 14mo
Centique @JamieArc @Redwritinghood Yay! Pleased to be in such good bookish company 😘 14mo

A prostitute who wants to take revenge on all the men, who have treated her and all women badly. She does this by making a rich guy fall in love with her, and then makes her way deeper and deeper into his life. Need I say more about, why I picked this for #IllMakeYouSorry?

And yes, I probably should shut up about this book, but I won‘t till you all read it, so there‘s that 🙃😉

This book is all about the #LadyMadonna/whore trope. William Rackham is married to his innocent, and a little bit crazy wife, Agnes, but she doesn‘t really do it for him. He is bored and restless. Until he meets Sugar, a not so innocent prostitute. And then William spends the rest of the book trying to figure out who he wants. Decisions, decisions 🤔

laundry_piles I really enjoyed this book. I read it so long ago. I think there's a follow up boo now but I haven't read it and there was a mini series based on this book that I had watched. This book made me so thankful I wasn't born in that era! 2y

Martta @Tamra It takes a toll on me too. I counted that this year already I have travelled about 40 350km around the world and around Finland. I hope I get to rest a bit after this week. Travelling is a bit laborious if you do it a lot. 2y

This sometimes happens in Finland; the conductor just announced that they have found a Second World war bomb under the train station I'm travelling to (they were making renovations and found it by accident). This means that before I get out of this train and before any of this area's trains get to move anywhere they need to move the bomb away. This is what we mean by bomb threats in Finland. Just my luck. 😂😂😂😂

julesG Hope you don't have to wait for too long. The tagged book is great, BTW. Similar bomb threats to happen in certain parts of Germany. Have to travel to the Rhine-Ruhr area in 11 days, hope the ground is still frozen then and any building work is suspended. 2y
Martta @julesG We are luckily already moving. It's pretty regular that this happens. Finland was bombed pretty throughoutly during the second world war. For example when they took down a school I went for three years as a child they found a bomb. It was an interesting feeling to realize that you went to school on top of an old bomb for three years. 😂 2y
julesG Have a good trip. My brother and I found WW II hand grenades playing and digging in the forest one day. Luckily we a) knew what it was due to a school drill and b) hadn't been digging so hard that we triggered them accidentally. 2y

Martta @julesG Oh good! That could have ended in a very bad way otherwise... Luckily the old bombs seem to go off pretty rarely but it's still good to be very carefull. 2y
julesG Yeah. Tell me about it. Back then we thought it was a great adventure, now, with the eyes of an adult /mother, I think we were stupid to even play in that area. We knew pretty well to steer clear of the area. 2y
Martta @julesG It does sound like you were playing in the wrong place. 😁 But sometimes history just kicks back and there is nothing no one can do about it. 2y
julesG Your last sentence reminds me of 'Purge'. 😉 2y
Martta @julesG Now that you said it. It kind of does. 😁 2y

A change of book and some Easter chocolate. I have had this book on my Sony reader for ages and I'm feeling like now is the time to continue with it. Still couple of hours of train ride left before arriving to the destination. 😊📚

oOArankaOo I was thinking of getting a new e-reader, but your pictures actually make me miss my Sony. I need to figure out where I put it when we moved house! 2y
Martta @oOArankaOo I'm really attached to my old and always reliable Sony Reader. ❤ 2y

My amazing book haul earlier this month from a library sale. All of this for $4! My kitty had to inspect them first.

Sugar is definitely working longer than #9to5 - She‘s a “working” girl, and she works hard to get the things she wants. Even if it means working through the night and writing on her novel by day. While at the same time ensnaring rich guys to make her lige a bit easier.

batsy Great choice. Love this book! 2y
Kalalalatja @batsy it is freaking awesome! I haven‘t read one by Faber I liked as much as this 2y

Dragon Glad to hear that ! 💐 2y
HotMessJess @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks thank you, we are officially back in action 😍😍 2y
HotMessJess @Ashley_Nicoletto this read looks SO intriguing. My Mother in Law lets me go through her book shelves and take whatever I want when she‘s done. It‘s dangerous 😳, but she‘s got impeccable taste in books! 2y
HotMessJess @Dragon thank you! So glad to be over that garbage! 2y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I. Love. This. Book. 2y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled The movie is well done too - check it out when you‘re done!! 2y
HotMessJess @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled there‘s a movie too?!? I‘m so excited! Maybe I‘ll try this after Lab Girl!! 2y

Of course I had to pick this for the #crimson prompt today. This is a story about Sugar, a prostitute in Victorian (Edwardian?) England, and how she tries to change her situation. It is historical fiction at its finest, and I were hooked all the way through 👌

This is still my favourite Faber book, and I have so many good memories connected to it.

batsy This book is so good ♥️ 2y
JamieArc I loved this book! It‘s one of the few I‘m tempted to reread. 2y
AmyG I loved this, too. ❤️ 2y

benchley1 I loved this book, could not get into the movie though. 2y
Kalalalatja @benchley1 I didn't even know there was a movie! 2y
TheAliceEvers The BBC (I think) did a great tv show adaption a couple years ago. Remember thinking what a fantastic story with incredibly complex characters. Think I should give it a read too! 2y
Kalalalatja @batsy @JamieArc @AmyG I keep recommending it to people, it is just so great @TheAliceEvers you definitely should, and maybe I should try and find that BBC show 👍 2y
Quirkybookworm I‘m reading it at the moment. I‘m trying hard not to punch that so called gentleman and other men for degrading women. 2y

Unexpected #bookmail part 2!

My fantastic pen pal, @Born.A.Reader sent me all of this awesomeness, and said I didn‘t have to wait for Christmas, so heck yes, I opened them. 😃

Thank you so much, Jenn! I haven‘t even been a good pen pal the last couple of months, and you are too kind! ❤️❤️

Born.A.Reader Aww you're very welcome! And don't worry, it's been a crazy few months for everyone! ❤ 2y
E-book Loved A Northern Light! 2y
LeahBergen The Crimson Petal is one of my faves! ❤️❤️ 2y

This book has been described as Dickensian, and it certainly has the feeling, although it doesn‘t really have the same Victorian morality. Sugar is a fascinating character, as a woman trying to make her way in a male-dominated world. And the other characters are equally interesting and eye-catching.

I bought this in my favorite bookshop in Edinburgh, and the copy happened to be a signed one!

BookishMarginalia Love the tote! 2y

Finished this book on a plane. Combination of audiobook and traditional book. I think I liked it! Some interesting characters. Great writing. I definitely have to think about it some more. I‘m not sure I understand everything. This will forever be my first cross stitch and read book. Might have been the best part of the book!

Up next.....I've been carrying this heavy book everywhere the last few days. Hope it is worth it!

#booksacrossoceans Day 12: #sixwordsaturday

Need to reread this one. With the exception of my Nancy Drew collection, this seems to be the only six-word title on my bookshelf.

Agnes Rackham is completely #offtheirrocker in the Crimson Petal. I do really like her as a character though. 👍

hlgreenfield I recently bought this book on a whim because it was at a charity shop. Is it good/worth reading? 3y

Robothugs Did your candy ever get to you? 🤔 The last thing it says is they attempted to deliver and it's being held for you. (edited) 3y
