The Luminaries
The Luminaries | Eleanor Catton
The bestselling, Man Booker Prize-winning novel hailed as "a true achievement. Catton has built a lively parody of a 19th-century novel, and in so doing created a novel for the 21st, something utterly new. The pages fly."--New York Times Book ReviewIt is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to stake his claim in New Zealand's booming gold rush. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of unexplained events: a wealthy man has vanished, a prostitute has tried to end her life, and an enormous cache of gold has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely ornate as the night sky.Richly evoking a mid-nineteenth-century world of shipping, banking, and gold rush boom and bust, THE LUMINARIES is at once a fiendishly clever ghost story, a gripping page-turner, and a thrilling novelistic achievement. It richly confirms that Eleanor Catton is one of the brightest stars in the international literary firmament.

Good. The story was good and there was a decent pace to it. Had to read it in two halves as it sometimes dragged so it could have been half it's size to give the story a really good pace.

Eleanor Catton creates an epic story of the New Zealand Gold Rush in her prize winning 2013 book, The Luminaries. It captivated and confused me, as Catton takes many disparate characters and creates a constellation of mystery. Keeps you guessing until the final page!

Starting this one for #readingwomen2019#authorfromnewzealand. My #chunksterstrategy is to both listen and read. That way, I can move forward either way and theoretically finish sooner. Usually works pretty well.

This book is brilliant! It is intricately plotted according to astrological charts, but you don‘t have to know anything about the zodiac or any of the astrological stuff to enjoy it. I‘m so glad I finally read it!

This is an incredibly dense and complex novel, with a vast and rich cast of characters. It will not be for everyone, and it is not an easy read. It is however, a literary feat and completely deserving of the Man Booker prize.

Ruthiella Loved this book! I always cringe a bit when other readers think it is boring. ❤️😍❤️😍 5mo
Birdsong28 @Tashreads Thank you for doing the buddy read with me. Have spent the afternoon reading a bit of this #chunkster I got from page 56 to 122! (Which according to Goodreads is 14%) I think is good progress considering it's so dense that I had to refer back a couple of pages every so often just to be able to follow the story which I think I am finally getting!! How are you getting along @Tashreads @Oryx ?

About to start this chunkster as a buddy read with @Birdsong28 and @Oryx IT IS HUGE 😮📖

Birdsong28 I know it's soooo big that's why I suggested a #buddyread as I know that I would give up if I didn't have people supporting me or people to support through it. 😘📚📖 6mo
cariashley So good and perfect for a buddy read! I would have struggled so much without that support! 6mo
Oryx @Tashreads @Birdsong28 How are you both getting on? I'm about 6 hours in (of 28) and I'm flagging a little. Keep losing concentration on it, and so finding it hard to keep track of the story. 5mo
Birdsong28 @oryx @Tashreads I'm only on page 17! I have had a busy week at work so when I have got home I just haven't felt like reading something so dense. I will be reading it more this week hopefully 🤞It is very dense and hard to follow as I have had to go back and re-read passages so I think that is half the issue, but with both of your support I know I will get through it. 😘📚📖 5mo
Tashreads @Birdsong28 @Oryx yes, it is incredibly dense and so many characters! I don‘t know how I would go if it wasn‘t on audio. This would take me months to wade through. However I am intrigued (especially by Anna and Lydia) and cant wait to see how it all comes together. I‘m about 10 hours in. 5mo

Weaponxgirl @Birdsong28 thankyou so much for the offer 🥰 but please go ahead without me, it may give me inspiration to finish what I‘ve started a bit quicker if it looks good! Set in 1860s New Zealand, The Luminaries weaves together the world of the gold rush, shipping, banking and others. It also tells the tale of how people decieve others for their own gains. Overall, a long read (830 pages in paperback) but good read. I did get somewhat confused at times on keeping characters' names straight.

Finished! Woo hoo! It only took me most of the year 😂. This is a great book, and I can see why it was awarded the Man Booker Prize, but it is also one that requires a significant time commitment and that should only be read when in the right reading mood. It‘s quite brilliant.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 This would have been an easy five-star read for me had my reading mood not necessitated that I set it aside for months after I first started it.

My list of books to finish before the end of 2018 is down to two! It was three, but I‘ve made the decision to shift the finishing of Michener‘s The Covenant to 2019 - it‘s 1200 pages long and I‘m not even at the halfway point yet.

While I‘m not going to formally participate in #24b42019 because I don‘t want to track my reading time, I do plan to do nothing but read from Sat to Tues (minus a trip to the mall with my daughter). 😊

Andrew65 Enjoy your reading time and involvement with the Readathon even if you‘re not tracking the time. The most important think over those days is to have fun reading and let us know what you are reading. Your decision about The Covenant seems a very wise decision! 8mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 I‘ll take part in the reading portion of the Readathon 😊 The Covenant is a heavy tome. It‘s a great book, but the font is small and dense. It requires more time to read than I have to spare! 8mo
Andrew65 @Melissa_J I feel the same about Edward Rutherfurd books. 8mo

LeahBergen Oh! I almost forgot to mention that I received your gorgeous, handmade Christmas card! Thank you so much! 😍😍 8mo
Melissa_J @LeahBergen I only have about 150 pages to go, and it is moving quickly! I‘m working tomorrow and then we are out to friend‘s for dinner, otherwise I‘d stay up late tonight to finish. It will have to wait until Saturday though 🤷🏻‍♀️ 8mo
Melissa_J @LeahBergen so glad it arrived. Sorry for not getting it to you before Christmas. I was a little late this year 😂 8mo
Melissa_J @TrishB thank you! I hope you get lots of reading time in over the next few days, too. 8mo

So much fun! I never would have thought I could be this sad to see an 830 page book come to an end, but it's true. Catton's storytelling powers are exceptional- so many memorable characters intersect in the 19th century New Zealand boomtown of Hokitika. She is also a master of several genres, even if this lives in a lit-fic frame: a grand mystery that seamlessly delves into fantasy and romance. I can't stop picking it back up to reread sections 😃

Billypar @batsy Thank you! Glad I can nudge others towards this, though I do think it makes sense to be extra cautious to pick up members of the 700+ page count club. And certainly not right after Dostoevsky 😀 12mo

LeahBergen Nice review! I really enjoyed this one, as well. 12mo
Centique I‘m so glad you liked it - I really loved this but I struggle to get other people to continue when they find the first half a little baffling. I‘ll read it again one day, I‘ve never felt so immersed in a Victorian gold mining town. 12mo
Billypar @LeahBergen Thanks! ☺️ 12mo
Billypar @Centique I think if people bail, they must do it in the first half. But I was never bored- very much the opposite. Unlike other long novels, there isn't much in the way of digressions. With each new account you get more clues- you just need to be ok with not being able to keep them perfectly in your head at all times. The immersive quality, as you mentioned, was my favorite. 12mo

Billypar @ReadingEnvy Hmm...I haven't read any Winterson. But Catton has a lot of stylistic flares so I did wonder if I'm just remembering something similar in that sense as opposed to the content itself. 12mo
LeahBergen Hmm... now it‘s reminding me of another book, too. 🤔 12mo

Finally made it to Part 2 ❤❤❤ Loving it so far! It's written as a narrative, with very little in the 1st person which strangely took a while to get my head around, but it suits this story really well!

When book, beer, and music (Portishead, not pictured) align in quality..... Friday night perfection 😎

merelybookish Very nice! I loved that book once I stopped trying to figure out all the planetary stuff. 😉 12mo
BarbaraBB One of the best books I read this year. And I looove Portishead so perfection it is! Enjoy 💕 12mo
Leftcoastzen Portishead!👍👏❤️ 12mo

Cathythoughts @merelybookish I forgot about the planetary stuff 😳. Did anyone ever figure that out ?! 12mo
Reggie Omg, Portishead, must go listen to Roads to be taken back. Thanks. 12mo
Billypar @merelybookish @Cathythoughts Ha- I'm barely passed the 1/4 mark so I couldn't say. I'll let you know if any brilliant theories come to mind (unlikely as that is 😂). 12mo
Billypar @BarbaraBB @Leftcoastzen @Reggie Yay for the Portishead love! I'm worried they will release a fourth album and I won't be paying attention to music like I used to and miss it. So let's all agree to post about it on Litsy if that happens 🤞🤞 12mo
BarbaraBB Yes please! Let‘s do that! 12mo
Liz_M Flower Power! Yum. 12mo
Billypar @Liz_M I think it may be my favorite - I just wish more places stocked it 🌼🏵️🌸🍺 12mo

My all time favorite plot device at the start of a novel is when a character vanishes. It never fails to pique my interest. When a character is found dead, you have to find the murderer and explanation, which is fine in its own right, but *vanished* could mean anything. Also...the word 'vanished' in an old time setting like this (late 19th century) is the best... 'missing person' in a crime novel doesn't have the same mysterious undertones 🕵️

BarbaraBB All the love for this book 💜 12mo
DivineDiana Second a love of the word “vanish”. 12mo

Loving this book so far, even though it is such a S - L - O - W read :/ Only on page 194 (of 832) but I can't put it down! I do have to do the thing where you just shut the book for a few minutes and stare off into the distance though, as sometimes there is so much happening you need to enact the parts in your head too lol 😂
P.S. this is my baby Coco keeping me company whilst I read. She is making such cute snoring noises that I can't even ❤❤❤

You guys chose this gargantuan to #makemereadit , and have to say that the first chapter is as compelling an argument to read a 800+ page novel as I could ever picture. I'm hooked. Hopefully this means I will read quickly enough to finish before month's end so I can read the runner-up, If on a Winter's Night a Traveler. @TheReadingMermaid

Cathythoughts My son ,an intelligent young man like yourself , loved it. ! ( I bailed ) it‘s an interesting one ... lots of mixed reactions ! Enjoy (edited) 12mo
Billypar I've seen a few reported bails on this one, and definitely some negative reviews. I feel pretty confident I'm going to like it though- I don't read many chunksters, but when I do there's usually something about them that gets me to pick them up in the first place. 12mo
ValerieAndBooks I read this one as a buddy read, and did like it! But it requires a bit more engagement in reading it. 12mo
Billypar @ValerieAndBooks Yeah- engagement seems like a must. It pays dividends though- I already feel very immersed- one of those novels where the world really recedes while you're reading it. 12mo

I generally don‘t select my reading in advance given that I‘m a mood reader, but this month I have decided to go with a #ToBeFinished pile. The four books pictured have all been started, but for one reason or another I haven‘t finished any of them - they are all good books, too, so it‘s not like I‘ve pushed them aside because I don‘t like them 🤷🏻‍♀️ #TBR #AusteninAugust

Cathythoughts I‘m interested to hear your thoughts on Luminaries 👍🏻 13mo
wanderinglynn 👍🏻👍🏻 Love Robin Hobb! 13mo
Andrew65 Some big books there! 😬😳 13mo

Melissa_J @Cathythoughts I‘m picking it back up at the halfway point, and the first half was very good. 13mo
Melissa_J @wanderinglynn me too! I can‘t believe how long it is taking me to get through this one because I love it! 13mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 yup, which partially explains why I haven‘t finished them yet. 13mo
Andrew65 @Melissa_J I know the feeling, I‘m planning to start Sarum, but still to finish another of his I started in January! (edited) 13mo
ReadingEnvy I have a Michener I need to get back to as well. 13mo
LeahBergen Hey, weren‘t you buddy-reading The Luminaries with us? I thought you‘d finished. 😆 13mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 interesting that the second Ireland book has a different name in the UK. It‘s called Rebels of Ireland here (I have yet to read it). I loved Sarum, it‘s my favourite Rutherford Book. 13mo
Melissa_J @ReadingEnvy once finished this will be my third Michener. I really like the books, but they are sooo long! 13mo
Melissa_J @LeahBergen I started, but failed to finish 😬 13mo
Andrew65 @Melissa_J Makes me look forward to it even more! 😊. Strange how they use different titles. Awakening and Rebels give two very different scenarios! 13mo

I read this book at the beginning of 2018. A book set during the New Zealand gold rush, it had a lot going for it. Unfortunately, it was a bit too dense for me. It‘s the 2013 winner of the Man Booker prize. #rushrush #heatofjuly

Cinfhen I tried this one too, but I bailed as well... #NotAllManBookersAreForEveryone 13mo
AmyG I stuck with it and loved it. But yes, a very dense, slow read. 13mo
Cathythoughts I also bailed. ... didn‘t hold my interest .. 😵 13mo

BarbaraBB I loved it and should have thought of it today! 13mo
Reviewsbylola I made it through but I kind of wish I‘d bailed. It didn‘t get better for me. @Cathythoughts @Cinfhen Actually Cindy, I vividly remember when you bailed. 😂 13mo
TrishB I‘ve never got to it - though it‘s on my kindle! 13mo
Kalalalatja I loved it, but I can totally see why it isn‘t for everyone 🤷‍♀️ 13mo
LeahBergen @BarbaraBB I loved it, too. 😆 13mo
Mdargusch Hmmm. I‘m intrigued by the love/hate on here 13mo
BarbaraBB @Mdargusch You should try it 💕 13mo
Billypar This is up next for me, top-voted for #makemereadit - I guess I'll find out which camp I'm in soon 🤷 13mo
Cinfhen Yes, lots of love/hate @Mdargusch but be prepared...it‘s a chunkster!!! Can‘t wait to see where you land @Billypar 13mo

Booksbymybed @TheBookKeepers I am so looking forward to this one! 13mo
TheBookKeepers I love Madeline Millers writing style and her first book was a favorite of mine! I recently read Circe too and it was just as lovely! Hope you enjoy! That is such an epic library sale find tho with it being a new release! 👏👏 13mo

Love the way this book face reflects the waning moon, as do Catton‘s chapters, in this prize winning novel from New Zealand.

Why did I order this book? Seriously. Was it for a readalong? A readathon? A book club? I‘m happy to have it, but I‘m at a loss as to why.

Redwritinghood There was a read along earlier this year. 1y
Suelizbeth @Redwritinghood But I just purchased it. It may not have been anything on Litsy, at all. It may yet come to me. *sigh* 1y
BarbaraBB Be happy! It is a great book. My favorite of the year so far! 💕 1y
Suelizbeth @BarbaraBB I‘ll read it, for sure, even if I can‘t remember why, 😂 Good to know that you loved it. 1y

Reviewsbylola I felt similarly, especially at the beginning. 1y
KateFulfordAuthor Something lighter? If you need another recommendation, may I point you to my People‘s Book Prize nominated debut? Sassy female narrative, laugh out dialogue and a pacy plot. Check the link in the bio for 2 free chapters, reviews and more. 1y

I feel like this is going to be one of those books that I struggle a bit to follow. I have problems with books this long sometimes but I love the structure and setting so I‘m determined to plough through this!

BarbaraBB Do struggle on for a bit. It gets easier after the first (long!) chapter and it is such a great book. My favorite of this year so far! 1y
Emilymdxn @BarbaraBB thanks!! I never give up on books so I‘m determined to do it! I‘m enjoying it a lot more now though I still struggle a little bit with what‘s happening 1y
