A Confederacy of Dunces
A Confederacy of Dunces | John Kennedy Toole
A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole’s hero is one Ignatius J. Reilly, “huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, and a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original character, denizens of New Orleans’ lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures” (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun Times)

To Mr. Ignatius J. Reilly:

I know it‘s only been 3 weeks, but I‘m calling it quits. I wish I could say it‘s not you, it‘s me... but it‘s totally you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

~~

I definitely need to be way more bored to sit through this. I couldn‘t keep the story straight and I didn‘t get really attached to any of the characters. Might try it again at a different time but for now, I‘m throwing in the towel. 👋🏼

Drocchio03 It was years ago when I tried and failed to get through it. I thought it was me “not getting it”. Glad to see I‘m not the only one! 1mo
laur89 @Drocchio03 Nope, you‘re definitely not the only one! I read some reviews and it made me feel like I was missing something, but I think it just depends on what kind of books you like/what kind of reader you are. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Rachel.Rencher I had to bail on this one, too! It was just saturated with that bad humor. I couldn't stand it. 1mo
dragondrool I tried, too. Nothing about it was appealing. I couldn't get into the writing, characters, plot, or anything else. I was glad I borrowed it. At least I wasn't out money. I abhorred it. 1mo
laur89 @Rachel.Rencher @dragondrool I share the same feelings towards it! Definitely not worth spending money on. The borrowed audiobook was enough torture lol! 1mo

Disclaimer - I listened to the audiobook. I could not and did not finish this book. The characters were too absurd, the writing felt scattered, and the story did not capture me at all. I couldn‘t even tell you what the plot line was - it was that random.

Mehso-so

This is a difficult book to judge. It was funny. It had a colorful cast that was well done & a preposterous story that you couldn't help but want to see what happens next. BUT could there be a more annoying character than Ignatius J. Reilly? There were parts where I literally wanted to turn off the audiobook & never start it again b/c of Ig. I hated him, so liking the book is hard since he's front & center. But I can't deny it, it was captivating.

Ignatius J. Reilly, one of the grossest, gassiest, most obnoxious characters to disgrace my bookshelf. But I can't help pitying his total lack of self-awareness, and his ridiculous exploits are endlessly entertaining. I get angry and I want to laugh at the same time whenever I think of him. Maybe he's irredeemable but maybe also he needs a hug 🤗

If you've never had the pleasure of diving into the wonderfully eccentric city of New Orleans through the eyes of Toole's unique character, Ignatius Reilly, then you are missing out. 💚

I read this in college, but I decided that #ReadingUSA2019 was the perfect time to revisit #Louisiana. @Librarybelle

This book will make you laugh, and it will also make you cringe. Toole deserved the Pulitzer he won for this great novel.

“Ignatius loves his donuts. He says to me, ‘Momma, I love my donuts.‘ He‘s out in the parlor right now looking at TV. Every afternoon, right as rain, he looks at that show where them kids dance.” —“Move along, you coxcomb,” Ignatius belched, the gassy eructations echoing between the walls of the alley. The women‘s art guild turned its hats toward the source of the volcanic sound. Ignatius glared at the young man‘s tawny velvet jacket...

Didn't manage to read much of the list before October, but I'm going to carry on reading anyway. Like this cover art, but there's lots of great art for this book out there, I think it's one of those books that inspire people, probably due to the fantastic, vivid descriptions.

I loved this book! Laugh out loud funny, with an unforgettable protagonist in the person of Ignatius P. Reilly. Quite possibly the most put-upon, mistreated, misunderstood narcissist to walk the Earth! I read a review that likens him to Sheldon Cooper, and it‘s an apt comparison. Highly intelligent, but the lack of self-awareness is staggering and borders on stupidity. How can you be that smart and that dumb? He‘s obnoxious, but he‘s interesting!

I think I've narrowed it down to two. Confederacy of Dunces or Of Human Bondage, W. Somerset Maugham. Both are on my tbr list. @jmofo @arubabookwoman @sprainedbrain

jmofo @Butterfinger both are solid choices! I read Confederacy less recently (way more than ten years ago) but I am happy to re-read either! (edited) 7mo
arubabookwoman I‘m fine with either-I read them so long ago I remember very little about them, and I have them on my reread list. Confederacy of Dunces might be really fun for me because we lived in New Orleans for 18 years before moving to Seattle in 1986, so I‘m very familiar with lots of the places/things featured in the book, and it would bring back lots of memories. @sprainedbrain @jmofo @Butterfinger 7mo

Butterfinger Okay. Confederacy is my choice. All of you have read more classics than I have, but it is a goal of mine. I've read Stoner and Catcher in the Rye just this past year so I'll get there. Thank you all for your advice. I'm giddy with excitement. @jmofo @arubabookwoman @sprainedbrain 7mo
jmofo @Butterfinger November‘s a crazy month for me but I‘d be happy to buddy read or do something like this with other books in the future, if it helps. I often lament there is only so much time to read books but that doesn‘t keep me from a good reread! 7mo
arubabookwoman I‘m excited to revisit New Orleans! @jmofo, @sprainedbrain, @Butterfinger I would love to do buddy reads or something similar in the future with classics, 20th century or otherwise. Most of the ones I‘ve read were from before my 30‘s and I‘m in my 60‘s now and a lot of the newer books don‘t appeal as much. 7mo
arubabookwoman I love this quote by Italo Calvino: “A classic is a book that never finishes saying what it has to say.” (Or something like that).@Butterfinger @sprainedbrain @jmofo 7mo
sprainedbrain @arubabookwoman I would love to do some readalongs in the future. I have so many classics I‘m planning to read as I work through #1001books. 😃 7mo
Butterfinger Oh thank you so much @jmofo. I would also like to do buddy reads @arubabookwoman and @sprainedbrain. Speaking of 20th century classics, I just finished Midnight in the Garden of Goodness and Evil. It was published in 94. Is it too early to call it a classic? To me it must have staying power, to be in the public consciousness. Will it be read again in 25 years? 7mo

I just finished reading "A Confederacy of Dunces," and despite the iconic cover, which features a drawing of Ignatius with a bird on his head, this is how I saw the characters. I've tried to find the artist's name (I think both covers are by the same person) but no luck. Any leads? Or search terms that might get the result? The books here were published in the early '70s.

Such a wonderful, witty and imaginative book! 💛 It was hilarious to read it, to wander New Orleans' streets side by side with Ignatius and other lively and picturesque characters. Each person here is an archetype and shows typical features and problems of the middle XXth century strata. Together they are extravagant and totally crazy 🤯 And really moving, when you remember J.Kennedy Toole's sad fate of unacknowledged genius.

Here‘s another book from the #GreatAmericanRead that I can‘t believe wasn‘t required reading for me in high school (1984 is the other book). I can‘t believe how much I enjoyed this book. Ignatius Reilly is a great character! He‘s funny without meaning to be and I would ignore him if he was real person. Actually, that isn‘t true, I would be like Burma Jones and wonder about the funny fellow with the green hunting cap.

arubabookwoman I lived in New Orleans for 18 years, and loved this book. I always wonder whether it loses something if you‘re not familiar with N.O. 11mo
suvata @arubabookwoman I‘ve never even been to New Orleans but I enjoyed imagining all the scenery he talked about. 11mo

My eclectic mix of some summer reading:
1. What She Knew — I don‘t even remember purchasing this book but I am always up for a good thriller. Hope this fits the bill.
2. A Confederacy of Dunces — Trying to complete the books I have not read from #GreatReadsPBS. http://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/books/#/

Insightsintobooks Has been on my TBR forever. My birthday is coming next month so maybe I'll get it then. :) 11mo
suvata @Insightsintobooks I hope you do. 11mo

Pickpick

A satire of twentieth century American life and modern trends. It‘s about a fat windbag who thinks he is smarter than everyone. His long suffering mother had enough of his stupid behavior getting them into trouble.

Contrary to Miss Trixie's assertion, the central character of Toole's brilliant novel is not named Gloria, & is a #male I finally read this book a couple of months ago & it's a new favorite. Ignatius is ridiculous, pompous & oddly endearing.
