A Confederacy of Dunces
A Confederacy of Dunces | John Kennedy Toole
A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Tooles hero is one Ignatius J. Reilly, huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, and a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original character, denizens of New Orleans lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun Times)

1. Just read for the first time last month, wish it hadn't taken me so long to get to it!
2. Bare feet (my one slight inclination towards hobbitness)
3. I guess Berchtesgaden? I basically stay towards the US coasts, have never been to the Rockies, so Hitler's hidey-hole is basically it.
4. IDK, I love too much food to even know what food I hate 🤷
5. I am literally wearing my Crowley (Good Omens) costume right now.

SlytheSly A nice surprise when I finished this book. It was recommended to me while on vacation in New Orleans. I think the author was a native from there. Tragic death by suicide because (amongst many things I presume) he had not been published yet. He wrote another one (Neon Bible) that I have not read yet. 1mo

(Day 2 - #PoorMisguidedFool)

*I cannot think of a more misguided fool than Ignatius J. Reilly. His antediluvian views on anything that smacks of “new” or “modern” and/or especially “pop,” mark him as a primitive out of pace with his own time. I‘m sure many of you have read the book, but if you‘re interested in New Orleans and would like an immersive course into the city and its idiosyncrasies, this is a good place to start. ♥️

arlenefinnigan Excellent! 2mo

gradcat @Cinfhen Did you really? You know, I reread it a couple of years ago, and while I am of the opinion that it captures New Orleans very, very well, I wasn‘t so sure it held up anymore. It seems to be “of its time,” if you know what I mean. ♥️ 2mo
Cinfhen I think you‘re right about the book capturing NOLA but the character of Ignatius was such a chore to read. I just couldn‘t deal with his shenanigans 2mo
gradcat @Cinfhen I understand that...he‘s such a nudge. 2mo

Either you love this gem or you hate it. Ignatius J. Reilly is an overeducated burden on his loving but not so bright mother. Once he needs to get out into the workforce to help pay for a car accident, hilarity ensues! Woah! Include a cast of colorful secondary characters and you can't lose, babe! 😍

Okay so this is one of those books on those lists of books you "must read" which is why I decided to read it. I think it's ridiculous and crazy and funny as hell. Ignatius is the most bizarre character I have ever come across in a book! I have to admit I laughed out loud a lot over his self-absorbed antics. His constant yelling of "Oh my God" was hilarious. The situations he got himself into and how he reacted to things..sooo stupid. ?

Some of my favorite artworks came from my trips to New Orleans: a Tribal mask made in the newly formed country of Birkino Faso, a couple of pieces vended from an old cigarette machine, a wooden toy that thrums its fingers by winding a crank, a griffin candle holder (guess the hole), and, natch, a Rodrigues blue dog.

I really don‘t even know if I liked this book or not.... I listened to it on audiobook and there were certainly a couple times during Ignatius‘ ramblings that I zoned out but for the most part it kept me entertained. The narrator made Ignatius sound like Eugene from The Walking Dead and thats all I could picture the whole time! It seemed the whole book was a comedy of errors with an unlikeable main character who had NO redeeming qualities

To Mr. Ignatius J. Reilly:

I know it‘s only been 3 weeks, but I‘m calling it quits. I wish I could say it‘s not you, it‘s me... but it‘s totally you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

~~

I definitely need to be way more bored to sit through this. I couldn‘t keep the story straight and I didn‘t get really attached to any of the characters. Might try it again at a different time but for now, I‘m throwing in the towel. 👋🏼

This is a difficult book to judge. It was funny. It had a colorful cast that was well done & a preposterous story that you couldn't help but want to see what happens next. BUT could there be a more annoying character than Ignatius J. Reilly? There were parts where I literally wanted to turn off the audiobook & never start it again b/c of Ig. I hated him, so liking the book is hard since he's front & center. But I can't deny it, it was captivating.
