Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Nightmares and Dreamscapes | Stephen King
The long reach of King's imagination and the no-holds-barredis storytelling have never been so richly demonstrated. In story after story, several published here for the first time, King takes readers to places they've never been before. A veritable Stephen King "amusement park.

I failed this #24in48 challenge. I've logged about 4 hours. Which is probably more than I would've done. I turned on the audiobook to fold instead of Netflix, so that's a win.

I'm not sure how to choose my actual bookends. My grandmother was moving and needed someone to take a Civil War era secretary desk off her hands. My husband was balking. So I had to make it appealing to him. I seem to arrange by covers.

The worst offense I've seen was a borrowed book of my husband's getting left in the rain and then thrown into a trunk to "dry". It was painful to look at.

Second worst is this: target practice with pellet guns. I've been replacing these Kings, but I like these editions and it's slow going. ?

#KingAtoZ

Y is for “You Know They‘ve Got A Hell Of A Band”, a story from Nightmares & Dreamscapes, a 1993 collection of mostly previously published material. The story concerns a young couple on a road trip in Oregon when they accidentally wander into a small town inhabited by dead rock and roll legends (the title is taken from a 70‘s rock song by Climax). It was adapted for TV as part of a TNT miniseries in 2006.

rohit-sawant Great pick! 👏🏼👏🏼 Didn't know it was adapted! 13mo
GarthRanzz @rohit-sawant Thanks Rohit! I wasn‘t aware either. The miniseries is also where Umney‘s Last Case was adapted and one of my all time favourite stories from Night Shift; Battleground. But I was able to find all eight episodes and will be binging this weekend. 😊 13mo

Vampire
When you think Vampires and King 'Salem's Lot pops into your mind first, but another terrific vampire story he's written is "The Night Flier," about a tabloid reporter who investigates a series of murders committed by a killer who flies from airport to airport in a private plane. Suspenseful, creepy & reminiscent of Matheson's Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
#KingAtoZ
@GarthRanzz

Synopsis from StephenKing.com:

It‘s just another ordinary day in 1930s Los Angeles for private investigator Clyde Umney, until a new client walks into his office. Umney soon learns that his client is the crime-fiction writer who not only created him, but now needs to switch places with him.

YouReadMyEyes That picture 😱😱😱 14mo
YouReadMyEyes @batsy He‘s got some scary stuff indeed! Until recently, I had only read a couple of his books back in the 90‘s. I read 11.22.63 last year and loved it. No horror. It‘s time-travel and romance and adventure. I highly recommend it! 14mo
See All 9 Comments
Reggie @batsy it‘s a good one to read. There‘s a story in there called Crouch End that gives me the creeps every time I think about it. AND it‘s like 1 of 2 stories where he doesn‘t tell you in the back where the inspiration comes from. Which kinda creeps me out even more. Give Full Dark No Stars a shot. I think you‘d like it. Four creepy novellas with what I think is some of his best stuff hidden in there. Salem‘s Lot is still my favorite, though. 14mo
batsy @YouReadMyEyes and Reggie thanks for the recs! So much for love for him on Litsy and I've long thought I need to read more of him. I think I'll ease in with 11.22.63 and ease into the creepier stuff 😆 14mo

Great collection of short-stories. Some of them are good, but most of them are great and they stick with you long after you finish reading them. There are some amazing gems in this volume (plus a non-fiction piece), as some old tropes turned into something new or reinterpreted. A great collection. 🤓

I can't believe I've bailed on Stephen King, but there you have it. The problem was, I think, listening to these stories on audio. I may well return to them on a cold winter's night when I can't sleep, but in the summer sunshine I found my mind wandering too much which you can't afford to do with short stories.

batsy I read this in my teens and had nightmares and have never read King again 😁 2y

Short stories/novellas are really not my thing. At least, not when they come all packaged together in one big book. I just have the hardest time reading them quickly. candc320 @TheNextBook ugh you know they'll make us wait for it too 😕! 2y
SaraBeagle 🙋🏼🙋🏼🙋🏼🙋🏼 2y
PenguinInFlight @TheNextBook HAHAHAHA! Mine was pretty much the same. I said "OH MY GOD, LOOK!! It looks just like a Stephen King title!" And his reply was "Huh." LOL. Ah, well. ?? 2y
Claireluana Great show! Fabulous binge! 2y
Librarianaut That show is the best.... 2y
UnidragonFrag It was SO SO good! I cannot wait until the next season! But jeez, some people were actually pissed off at about the font thing. Haha 2y
TheNextBook @LauraBeth @Joanne1 @tjwill @LazyLibrary @SaraBeagle @Claireluana @Librarianaut It was just so damn well done! And it truly felt like the 1980's. Old school eeire perfection. 2y
TheNextBook @candc320 yeah, I know...😩 damn them! 2y
TheNextBook @UnidragonFrag Wait! People were made about the font?! Why?! This with that damn amazing ass theme music set the tone for the whole show! 2y
LazyLibrary Yes!!! I felt like I was in the 80's watching the best movie ever made! Complete nostalgia attack!!! So well done. Winona forever!!! 2y
Dragon The Stranger Things writers and producers must be Stephen King fans. Really enjoyed season one so I hope season two is good 🤞 2y
UnidragonFrag Because they "stole" it from Stephen King. People get mad about really dumb things -.- 2y
TheNextBook @Dragon Yes! Please be good! 2y
TheNextBook @UnidragonFrag and King freaking loved the show! Humanity for the fail on that one 2y
UnidragonFrag I know, that's what makes it most ridiculous! 2y
kristinshafel There's a video about how the font is inspired by several 80s font trends, both book and movie titles. I also read that for Stranger Things, the teens are like in a John Carpenter movie, the adults in a Spielberg movie, and the kids in a King book... or something like that 😊 I loved it too! 2y
Josie LOVE Stranger Things!!!! 2y
TheNextBook @kristinshafel I need to find that video! I was reading so many articles about the show after watching it! I found it so interesting! 2y
MaleficentBookDragon ❤️❤️❤️Stranger Things!!! It is very John Carpenter to me, who I also ❤️. 2y

Also reading this in intervals. Thinking I like his short stories more than his novels.

Pageinabook26 Only Stephen King book I've ever read was a short story book. I want to read more of his just never have 3y
Chezjennyd07 Have you read "Everything's Eventual?" I LOVED IT! 3y

Pickpick

An eclectic mix of short stories/poems--24 in all--that make for some great reading & some good reading. You'll definitely need to come to terms with some things after reading this collection: letting your kids play with toys, using the bathroom, answering the old landline, & getting lost in suburbia. Some of the book is non-fiction, some isn't even scary. Worth a quick Halloween night read-aloud though. #PairWith: Pabst Blue Ribbon, cold-can.

TheNextBook This is already on my list for next years short story theme! #keepingitshort 3y
Olivia306 @MrBook Funny, I just ordered this book the other day, among others. 😊 Glad to see you praise it. Now I'm looking forward to reading it. 🤓 3y
