Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Nightmares and Dreamscapes | Stephen King
The long reach of King's imagination and the no-holds-barredis storytelling have never been so richly demonstrated. In story after story, several published here for the first time, King takes readers to places they've never been before. A veritable Stephen King "amusement park.

Day 28 #Scarathlon Photo Challenge - Nightmare. I don't know what happened to my copy, but this is my favorite short story collection of King's. I read it while I was in high school, and I can still remember several of the stories in vivid detail. #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall

For me, Nightmares and Dreamscapes is a better collection than Night Shift. By the time of its publishing King had established his voice and style, and these stories feel more finely tuned. With that said, they might all be a bit overlong—an almost 700 page (non-retrospective) short story collection is insanity!

Stand outs: Dolan‘s Cadillac (one of the first King shorts I ever read and still an all-time fav), Chattery Teeth, Umney‘s Last Case.

Far less disjointed than his last short story collection, Nightmares & Dreamscapes was a delightful read. Standouts include Dolan's Cadillac, The End of the Whole Mess, The Night Flier, Chattery Teeth, The Ten O'Clock People, and The Doctor's Case. 5/5

quote
Pikathulhu
post image

The Fifth Quarter: Buried treasure and betrayal. What's not to love? 5/5

The Doctor's Case: No one does Holmes as well as Sir Conan Doyle, but King makes an admirable attempt. 5/5

Ummey's Last Case: A fun noir detective story with a unique twist. 4/5

Head Down: I'm not a sports fan, but the well-written nature of this essay about baseball pulled me through. 4/5

Brooklyn August: Baseball poetry, on the other hand, is not for me. 1/5

quote
Pikathulhu
post image

My Pretty Pony: Honestly, without the weird bit with the "Peter Pinching", this would be a perfect short story. 5/5

Sorry, Right Number: Beautiful and tragic. 5/5

The Ten O'Clock People: Stupendous concept told perfectly. 5/5

Crouch End: A perfectly serviceable Lovecraftian tale, but not a stand-out. 4/5

The House on Maple Street: A wonderful story that, at times, is startlingly evocative of Bradbury, as I'm sure it means to be. 5/5

Probably my 3rd favorite King collection, behind Night Shift and Skeleton Crew. A lot of great stories in here. “The Moving Finger”, “Suffer the Little Children”, and “The Ten O‘Clock People” are all personal favorites.

quote
Pikathulhu
post image

The Moving Finger: Creepy premise, but I wish it capitalized on the concept more. 4/5

Sneakers: Excellent story told well. I would happily have read a full book about the MC. 5/5

You Know They Got a Hell of a Band: Absolutely incredible concept, including a grisly turn. 5/5

Home Delivery: Surprisingly solid zombie tale as well as a loving character portrait. 4/5

Rainy Season: My God. I won't look at the end of Magnolia the same way again. 5/5

quote
Pikathulhu
post image

Suffer the Little Children: Unnerving, but a little too close to modern tragedy. 4/5

The Night Flier: Vampires and Tabloids, what's not to love? 5/5

Popsy: Immensely satisfying. Also, vampires, but naturally, humans are the real monsters. 5/5

It Grows on You: Disjointed, but a good effort. 3/5

Chattery Teeth: Dark and comic, one of my favorite combinations. 5/5

Dedication: Absolutely wild from start to finish. Maybe a tad bit overlong. 4/5

quote
Pikathulhu
post image

The End of the Whole Mess: An absolute delight. I've always loved unique takes on how the world may slide unceremoniously into apocalypse, and this is certainly unique. The only gripe I have is with its brevity, particularly as it nears its conclusion. 5/5

quote
Pikathulhu
post image

Dolan's Cadillac: I'm a sucker for a good revenge tale, especially when it's (pun intended) executed as well as this one is. Despite taking up a sizable chunk of this collection's pages, nothing about this tightly-spun tale feels overlong or excessive. 5/5

Happy 75th, Stephen King! My favorite book of his is Salem‘s Lot. But I also give him a lot of credit for my love of the short story. My favorite of his is Crouch End which can be found in Nightmares and Dreamscapes. A family vacationing in London. Parents take off to go look around and find them selves in Crouch End, a place that doesn‘t seem quite right or part of this world. You learn from the first couple paragraphs that the wife is the 👇🏼

Reggie sole survivor. Just something about how a day can start out so bright and full of joy can then take such a wrong turn and the way it was done in here really got under my skin. And before I knew what it was called this is one of the first cosmic horror stories I had read. Hope all of you throw out a favorite King work post or a King memory. 2y
Mollyanna I remember reading It by the pool as a pre-teen. I was completely absorbed by it, and it had a lasting affect on me. I still love large tomes, and I still refuse to walk too close to storm drains to this day. 🤡 2y
AmyG I think one of the reasons I love his books is that he writes about “regular, simple” people that have crazy events impact their lives. As if it could have been any one of us. 2y
See All 8 Comments
Reggie @Mollyanna 🖤😁I was 12-13 when the IT series came out and there‘s that scene in the P.E. Showers where he comes up out of the drain. And those showers looked just like the ones we had at school. I thought, holy crap, how am I supposed to take a shower now? Lol thanks for sharing! 2y
Reggie @AmyG Yes! In the Regulators there‘s that family of four on a family vacation that gets stopped by that possessed cop. He tells them to follow him because there‘s a crazy on the loose. Then they all get killed except for the boy. And I think it scared me because we were a family of four who always took a vacation driving in our suburban. 2y
Ruthiella I‘ve only read a handful of his novels but It or The Shining are the ones that stand out in my memory most. Well, The Long Walk and Running Man too! Of his short stories, I remember The Mangler! The blood of a virgin, nightshade and something else all come together in a freakish coincidence! 😱 And Quitter‘s Inc. for a fantastic ending! (edited) 2y
Reggie @Ruthiella 😁thanks, for sharing! I barely read the Shining a couple of years ago. But I got drunk on my 21st birthday and watched the movie, and, well, that was not the right combo. Lol 2y
Rissreads Salem‘s lot is also my all time favourite Stephen King 💜 Vampires just do it for me! (edited) 1y

As I continue my slow journey through a #chronologicalkingread, I realize I‘ve forgotten just how long this short story collection is.

I also notice that King was 45 when he wrote the introduction to the book. I‘m really glad he hadn‘t said everything he had to say at that point. Apparently, he hasn‘t yet, either! Lucky for us Constant Readers.

Of all the King books I own - a lot - I like the cover on this one the best. The stories are consistently strong, too. I‘d call this ‘mid-period‘ King: not as good as the early stuff but the drug days were behind him and it shows. Incidentally, one of 600 or so books I gave away during a house move. Instantly regretted, then years later I found this at a car boot sale - identical to the one I gave away. Sometimes you just get lucky, I guess.

BoleyBooks I really like this cover art! 3y
Mistermandolin @BoleyBooks So much going on. Like ciphers revealing keys to the content! 3y
Suet624 You‘re right about the cover. So good. And I sympathize with you about regretting a particular book‘s release into the world. I have had to hunt down many a book that I gave away. 3y
See All 16 Comments
Mistermandolin @Suet624 In future I‘ll buy a bigger house before I give books away. Always a space thing. Crazy. 3y
Suet624 LOL. I live in a small apartment with boxes and shelves filled with books. Sometimes it‘s overwhelming. But I‘ve learned my lesson. I‘m only giving away books I didn‘t like. 3y
Mistermandolin @Suet624 That‘s a great idea. Wish I‘d adopted it in the past. I even gave away Misery. Can you believe it?! 3y
Suet624 Gah! 3y
Reagan I love that cover! 3y
AmyG Great cover. I‘d never seen this one. I used to collect SK books and donated many because I was moving to CO...and yes, I regret ittoo. 3y
Mistermandolin @Reagan It‘s just a great book all round. There‘s even a photo inside. Just one: a black and white illustration of a pivotal moment in the story that follows it. I‘ve never seen that in any of his other books. They sure pulled out the stops for that edition. A Labour of love to offset all the horror, perhaps. 3y
Mistermandolin @AmyG There ought to be some online support group we can go to. Maybe we should start one. ‘Donators Anonymous‘, or whatever. For everybody like us who gave away books only to spend years ruing that fact. Grieving their loss: a grief made worse by the fact of knowing that we could have chosen to keep them. I gave away a first edition NEL paperback edition of The Shining. Bought from a kiosk in southern Spain on a family holiday in 1979. I did. (edited) 3y
AmyG Oh no....that‘s got to hurt. And that website would just be people either crying about what they did or people saying...DON‘T. 🤣I will say, I did check to see if I had any first editions before I donated them. I didn‘t. I kept my favorites. But still. 😢 (edited) 3y
Mistermandolin @AmyG Yep; still hurts. Serves me right for not thinking more. Still, onwards and upwards. Life‘s too short for regrets. And anyway, it might turn up one day at a boot sale like ‘Nightmares...‘ did. You never know. Crazier things have happened. Like a globe-sweeping viral apocalypse where they nonetheless still deliver your groceries every Thursday. Never saw that one comin‘.... (edited) 3y
AmyG Ha. Not on MY bingo card- the apocalypse. And it‘s just a “thing”. In the scheme of life very unimportant. 3y
Reggie I love this book because it was one of the first books to make me really love short horror stories. Crouch End is my favorite from here. 3y
Mistermandolin @Reggie Yep; I like that one too. It‘s a really strong collection although I recall it getting some mixed reviews when it first came out. 3y

As with all short story collections, I liked some better than others. I think something I‘m not crazy about with short stories is the energy it takes to move from one to the other so quickly. I always knew that I often didn‘t like how short they were because I‘d just be “getting‘ into the story, when it would end and move on to the next. He included an interesting note at the end with a bit of information behind some of the stories

Reggie Ughhh, the one that stands clear as day for me from this book is Crouch End. And the worst part is is that in the back of the book he has paragraphs for each story explaining the inspiration. I have finally completed it! More than a year after first opening it.

There are a handful of stories in this collection that I really enjoyed, but most of them were just meh. I realize I may not be the fairest judge, as I often feel like I need more than a short story can give me. More detail, more character development, etc.

I really enjoyed this book! Its been quite a few years since I've read this, perhaps more than a decade, so I thought I'd opt for the audiobook to get a different experience.
The stories are really enjoyable, and really varied; horror, sci-fi, a Sherlock Holmes story, notes from the author, its a mixed bunch, but well worth the nearly 27 hours of listening time!

I failed this #24in48 challenge. I've logged about 4 hours. Which is probably more than I would've done. I turned on the audiobook to fold instead of Netflix, so that's a win.

I'm not sure how to choose my actual bookends. My grandmother was moving and needed someone to take a Civil War era secretary desk off her hands. My husband was balking. So I had to make it appealing to him. I seem to arrange by covers.
