Finders Keepers
Finders Keepers: A Novel | Stephen King
A masterful, intensely suspenseful novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes much too farthe #1 New York Times bestseller about the power of storytelling, starring the same trio of unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King introduced in Mr. Mercedes.Wake up, genius. So begins Kings instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasnt published a book for decades. Morris Bellamy is livid, not just because Rothstein has stopped providing books, but because the nonconformist Jimmy Gold has sold out for a career in advertising. Morris kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, yes, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel. Morris hides the money and the notebooks, and then he is locked away for another crime. Decades later, a boy named Pete Saubers finds the treasure, and now it is Pete and his family that Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson must rescue from the ever-more deranged and vengeful Morris when hes released from prison after thirty-five years. Not since Misery has King played with the notion of a reader whose obsession with a writer gets dangerous. Finders Keepers is spectacular, heart-pounding suspense, but it is also King writing about how literature shapes a lifefor good, for bad, forever.

The gang is back at it again and I love their chemistry! This second installment held my attention better than the first. I'm relieved how Brady was tied into the story but not as the centerpiece. This could be a completely independent story, but it makes sense to be happening in the same world with the same cast of characters. I can't wait to read the next one!

I loved the villain, I loved the earnest teenage hero Pete and I loved the literary backdrop but there was something not grabbing me at the same time. Some great bits, some “meh” bits, still a good page-turning story...

Another good read by King. Towards the end I kept screaming at the characters in my head when certain things would happen. ‘If you would have locked the door and brought you kid in sooner‘ or ‘if you have just taken the help offered and confessed‘ or ‘if you would have just handed the notebooks over.‘ But it ended in a way where everyone had a positive ending. Now to see how the follow up plays out.

Not bad, not amazing. The story definitely kept me interested, it was very suspenseful in parts, I was satisfied with the ending, and King is just a master storyteller, but still—overall a fairly forgettable book.

Just starting this one. I've been slacking on my reading due to work so my pile of reads is stacking up. Has anyone else read this? Thoughts? Did you enjoy it?

spookysara My least favorite of the Bill Hodges trilogy but still greatly enjoyable. Just goes to show how amazing the rest of the trilogy is. I need to reread. 6mo

Great story, although it‘s an awkward fit into this series. The story really has nothing to do with Det. Hodges and crew—they‘re just forced into it at the end. Still a great read, though!

Oh I had to dig deep for this one! I loved this trilogy but Morris Bellamy from Book 2 didn‘t sit right with me. I mean we are all crazed reading fans but would never go to the lengths he went if we were unhappy with a book. As much as I love this series I just didn‘t find his motivation all that believable. He also had some whiny moments that were a bit far fetched. #lovehate

This was written with book lovers at heart. A guy breaks into his favorite author‘s home to steal his unpublished writings. The story twists and turns and we visit several time lines from multiple points of view. Again, great characters but I do wish we had more Holly, Jerome, and Bill in this one. It took a long time before they made an appearance. I downloaded the final book in the trilogy before this one even ended. Shit don‘t mean shit.

I listened to the audio, and though there were occasional parts where my mind wandered somewhat, there was enough that kept my attention that I liked it. Even better, as it got closer to the end, I was kept wanting to listen to find out what would happen. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin What I‘ve found with some mystery/suspense/thriller books – whether on audio or if I‘m actually reading the words – the parts where I‘m more likely to lose focus is usually when it‘s the POV of the “bad guy”. Though that wasn‘t the case all the time for this book, it was for a portion, I think. Overall, though, another really good book by King 1y

It was great getting to see Bill Hodges, retired detective, and his oddball but well meaning partner, Holly Gibney, race to find an obsessed madman before he kills a family in the pursuit of unpublished manuscripts from the killer‘s favorite author. It was crazy and thrilling and horrifying and I‘m excited to see where this pair might go next. And I REALLY hope there‘s more Brady Hartfield, the big bad from the first novel, in the next! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This book is some awsomesauce!! It totally rocks. Finders Keepers is about the murder of reclusive writer John Rothstein and his missing notebooks; and the release of his killer from prison after 35 years. The characters are well developed and interesting, flaws and all! The suspense is seat of your pants engaging and I had to struggle to put it down.

#HeatOfJuly Day 14: When the revelation of falling head over heels in love with books produce a #Burn like no other, such that it “exalts.” Thoroughly enjoyed this Mr Mercedes installment. While a few readers mentioned how the middle part seemed to drag for them, I felt that the pace was just right, and I was emotionally invested and engaged throughout the narrative. It was a much-needed escape and reprieve. Full review https://wp.me/pDlzr-gs5

If you thought Annie Wilkes was bad news, you haven‘t met Morris Bellamy, the big bad wolf in FK. Considering how much of a hit Mr. Mercedes was, any other writer would‘ve banked on reader investment in pre-established characters, but SK throws any conventional structure and pacing out the window and does what he does best: follow the story. Of a vile psychopath & a sensitive teenager, both sharing a single trait, their love of books. ⬇️

rohit-sawant It's so strange since reading is associated with cultivating empathy, but here you have someone who is devoid of it and is just as spellbound by fictional characters. I could rave about it being a helluva good story with incredibly drawn characters, but the thing that really took centre stage was King‘s exploration of obsessive literary fandom, and how even in its most toxic form, it somehow manages to retain a thread of resonance. 1y

vivastory Excellent review! I couldn't have said it better. Toxic, obsessive literary fandom. Can't help but think of King purchasing the car that nearly killed him, so it wouldn't end up as part of a morbid collection. 1y
batsy Such an intriguing review, as always! I haven't read it but the concept of obsessive literary fandom & reading as a kind of sterile consumption instead of engagement is truly fascinating... 1y
rohit-sawant @vivastory Thank you! So true about the car winding up in some morbid collection had he not bought it himself. And Uncle Stevie has no shortage of crazed fans. Some of the anecdotes he's shared on the subject are so disturbing. 1y
rohit-sawant Thank you, @batsy! And 'reading as sterile consumption' is such an apt way to put it! I think you'll really dig the Bill Hodges trilogy. Hope you check it out soon! I'm pages into the third book and hooked already. 1y
Reggie Have you read Lisey‘s story where when she‘s with her writer husband at his signings she can tell the super crazy from just the usual zealous fan? Now you make me want to read these 3. 1y

rohit-sawant @vivastory That's the plan! vivastory 😂The entire Bill Hodges trilogy were 5 star books for me. I also loved The Outsider. I just read The Gunslinger a few days ago. Even more strange, ambitious & unique than I expected. 1y
vivastory FK strikes me as one of the best books about books I've read. So many great quotes about literary obsession & the power of literature. 1y

LOVED this book. The pacing was great, never too slow for me. The characterizations were awesome. Morris the thief, and Pete, the boy who finds his stash. This book mentions events that occurred in Mr. Mercedes, so its best to read that before this one. It's not a horror novel, but still produced a lot of anxiety in me while reading. I'm excited to read the final book in the trilogy, End of Watch.
