Shout | Laurie Halse Anderson
post image

Day even more made! Though the lighting is awful, it didn‘t get in the way of my tots fan girl moment when I got tell Laurie Halse Anderson my review of Shout (which comes out Tuesday)! She jumped up and gave me a hug and I about died! She is an incredible person and I am an awe of how she took the things that have happened to her and created a way to open up the door for difficult conversations for others.

Suet624 So exciting! 3mo
GondorGirl How awesome! I'll be meeting her tomorrow and I'm not sure I'll be able to get through it without sobbing! 3mo

Hi Friends! I know I‘ve been gone awhile, but I could use your help! I‘ve just accepted a job at our new junior high opening in the fall and have since been tasked to find books (YA Fiction or Nonfiction) to use cross-curricularly with Math and Science. Please drop some recs below!
#TeachersOfLitsy #ITeachMiddleSchool #NeedBookRecs

TheBookHippie I‘ll get back to you!!! With a list! 4mo
AndreaReads @TheBookHippie You‘re my favorite! Thank you for your help! 4mo
Readergrrl My friend is a science teacher and I am an English teacher. We worked on a unit tying germs/plagues, medical anthropology, etc. to Fever by Laurie Halse Anderson. 4mo
See All 27 Comments
Readergrrl Also Frankenstein! Such a great tie-in to current medical/ethical practices. Perhaps better for higher level readers as the language can be dense. 4mo
Readergrrl And don‘t laugh, but zombielit such as Raising Stony Mayhall might bring up some great conversations about epidemics and even evolution. 4mo
AndreaReads @Readergrrl I love your suggestions! Thank you! @Pogue Thank you! That one is on my TBR; I‘ll have to move it up and check it out! 4mo
TheBookHippie @Readergrrl We used the graphic novel of Frankenstein !!! 4mo
emtobiasz A little out there, and it may not line up exactly with what you‘re looking for, but this NF book on technology, privacy, and surveillance could be a great conversation starter: 4mo
emtobiasz This may skew a little young, but this gave my homeschool book club great discussions: 4mo
emtobiasz Lots of puzzles, ciphers, and codes in 4mo
TheBookHippie It is a picture book but the story and history are so cool!!! 4mo
Christine Congrats on the new job! :) 4mo

Happy Weekend, Friends!
1. Shout by Laurie Halse Anderson (I just finished Ghost by Jason Reynolds this morning)
2. All of the above, but I don‘t love ereaders, so you won‘t find on one too often...
3. I Am the Cheese by Robert Cormier and Of Mice and Men (But I have since gone back and read—and appreciated—both of them.)

I really enjoyed this thriller! Because I‘m in the depths of teaching POV and Suspense, it was fun noticing the things I talk about with my students. This is the story of Emma, our unreliable narrator, who is headed back to Camp Nightingale 15 years after the disappearance of her cabin mates. It was a quick, fun read. If you like Final Girls, then you‘ll enjoy this one as well!

I am so glad I didn‘t finish reading this book while I had students in my classroom—I had tears streaming down my face the whole last chapter. I LOVE that the author included facts and information about the three refugee groups that are featured in the book—it made me want to go out and learn more about it. If you still have not picked up this book, please go and do it now! It is worth your time!

This was my #BOTM way back in February, but I‘m glad I saved it for a rainy, dreary October. This was a perfect blend of ghost story/thriller/crime fiction—all of my favorite genres rolled into one. I found myself thoroughly creeped out and totally unsure of where it was going! This was a fun, delightfully creepy, perfect for October read.

This book. 💕 Rylie‘s story begins with the question: boy or girl. The answer: both. As a gender fluid teen, Rylie is desperate to fit in or, better yet, go unnoticed. When that doesn‘t happen, it is a struggle to keep everything bottled up inside. I loved this story—it is funny, real, heartbreaking, and even though I don‘t identify with Rylie‘s gender identity, I identified with Rylie‘s human experience.

This was my first read for my school‘s #DiverseReads challenge, and it did not disappoint. This is the story of Fabiola as she leaves her home country of Haiti to pursue a bright future in America. However within minutes of stepping on American soil her plans are turned upside down. This story is magical, charming, heartbreaking, with a rawness that seems to embody modern YA lit. American Street was a great start to our challenge!

AndreaReads @tpixie Nothing too special. I did a Back to School Station Rotation and one of the stations the students had to write on post-its what they thought a perfect classroom looked like, a perfect student looked like, and what were the characteristics of an excellent teacher. “Stuff your eyes with wonder...live as if you‘d drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It‘s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.”
Understatement of the year: Ray Bradbury had an incredible way with words. The way he wrote—speeding up, slowing down, twisting and turning...awesome. I have to let it process a bit, but I am so excited to read this with my 9th graders this year!

Hi, friends! For those of you who noticed my absence, I‘m so sorry! I‘ve had a rough couple weeks and one of my ways to deal with it was to avoid social media as much as I could, but I feel like I‘m coming out of it, so please be prepared for an onslaught of make-up posts! Love my Litsy family!

#HumpDayPost
1. Seriously. I HATE repeating instructions/directions. However, my students learn that zero tolerance quick, so I don‘t have to as much throughout much of the school year.
2. Westworld (why did I wait so long!?!) and NCIS
3. Black (I‘m boring when it comes to car colors...)
4. Watermelon 🍉 and Corn on the cob (though my tummy can‘t handle corn anymore...)
5. The Puffin in Bloom collection 💕

Alfoster I‘m so with you on #1! I once had a student ask me to repeat something and when I asked why he hadn‘t listened he said, “I was busy!” Um yeah, bye bye!😫 13mo
Lynnsoprano Oh, one of the things I don‘t miss about teaching since retirement. Also the kids who would walk through the door and ask, “are we singing today?” In chorus class! 🤦‍♀️ 13mo
AndreaReads @Lynnsoprano Ugh! Yes! I get “do I need a pencil?” Ummm, it‘s English class. We‘re going to read AND write EVERYDAY!!! 🤦🏼‍♀️ 13mo
Susanita I work with professors. They‘re the worst about following instructions and paying attention! It‘s like herding cats! 13mo
hgrimes @Susanita I hear you! I work with faculty too. Herding cats indeed! 13mo

Pickpick

My librarian asked me to read this book to help determine whether we should keep it on our shelves (Davis County, Utah can be pretty conservative). Absolutely we should keep this on the shelf. Knowing that my state ranks highest in teen suicides, I think it‘s important that ALL students are reflected in what they read, and that they know they are loved. This was a cute story about being true to yourself.

LiteraryinLititz Glad you came to that conclusion. I liked it a lot too! 13mo
Reggie I forgot where in Utah it is but it is a house where kids whose parents have died of suicide go to get therapy. It was featured on the podcast This American Life. The kids stay until they themselves feel like they don‘t need it anymore. A lot of them felt they made connections with other kids who understood what they were going through. Other kids would at school would say stuff like you know your parent is in hell, right? The house has a volcano 13mo
Reggie Room that is made out of nerf material where they can get as angry as they want and hit walls and scream for as long as they want. (Doesn‘t every school need this room?) The thing that killed me was that some of the kids who went there were 3-4yo‘s. Anyways, sorry this was a little off topic but I‘m glad you kept the book in, also. 13mo
JaclynW I agree with what you've said (although I haven't read this book yet). Thanks for doing your part to keep books like this on the shelves of Utah libraries! 13mo
Peddler410 Oh my gosh! Thank you for coming to that conclusion. I really think this is a very important book right now. 12mo

We‘ve spent the weekend at Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino National Forest, and today was the first decently warm day where I could lay in the hammock and read! So while the rest of the fam is kayaking at the lake, I am in my happy place. #ReadingWeekend #IReadYA #LakeLife

Cinfhen Looks so relaxing!! Enjoy 13mo
mrp27 Hasn't been the warmest in SoCal this weekend. Curious about your thoughts on this book, I can't decide if I want to add it to my tbr or not. 13mo
AndreaReads @mrp27 I loved it. It‘s a cute little story about being true to yourself. I‘m happy with how it ended, and I‘ll share it with my students. 13mo
mrp27 Thanks, I'm stacking it! 13mo
overtheedge I'm jealous of your hammock!! Hope you got some good reading in! 13mo
