I think this book hews closest to the Canon than any of my previous efforts. Dr. Watson is the sole narrator as Holmes matches wits with a very clever thief for hire, who will steal anything if the price is right. There‘s a lot of history here and more than a few rare artifacts that buffs should find intriguing. Let me know what you think.

I first read this about 40 years ago. It‘s funny how you remember the movie and the play more than the book. That said, this is still a telling book about mental illness and man‘s inhumanity to those less forty. It‘s also a book that has stood the test of time. With its overt religious symbolism, this is a book that, for me at least!”, ranks right up there with 1984 and Catcher in the Rye. Although magnificent, the film omits so much from the book

Traveling through New Hampshire, Reacher decides to visit the town where his father grew up. In a parallel story, two young Canadians find themselves prisoners of sorts at a remote motel. Eventually, the disparate elements merge in a story that, although not Child‘s best, is still plenty satisfying. There are several subplots and the usual array of unusual characters. Despite the flaws, a Reacher book is always a good read. No exception here.

Mehso-so

This is a sprawling Western that is absolutely brilliant in parts and terribly tedious in others. At more than 900 pages, this is a reading marathon. And when you finish, it‘s not really closed. The characters are interesting and fully developed, and the storyline is compelling. It‘s just that like Romeo and Juliet, much of it seems to turn on coincidence. Still, fans of the genre who haven‘t read it should. For others, maybe try something else.

Broken Places | Tracy Clark
Pickpick

After a shooting takes a young man‘s life and leaves her seriously injured, Cass Raines leaves the Chicago PD to become a private detective. When a priest, who had been her surrogate father, is found dead in his church along with the body of a gangbanger, the cops are eager to close the case as a burglary gone wrong and a suicide. Cass isn‘t having any of it though. This is a terrific read with a gutsy heroine who doesn‘t know the meaning of “no.”

After Israel decimates Iran‘s nuclear program with an act of sabotage, The rulers blame America. CIA agent Mitch Rapp sees an opportunity in the chaos to further embarrass the hardline rules, but a clandestine meeting between the head of the Agency and an Iranian official goes horribly wrong. With his boss kidnapped and her life in danger, Rapp is willing to do anything to get her back. It‘s nonstop action with a few scenes you might not expect.

When a Saudi billionaire arranges to have Mitch Rapp killed, he little realizes the tsunami that is about to be unleashed when the attempt fails. This is definitely one of the better Rapp tales and definitely worth a read. A word of caution, if you are going to read the Rapp tales, read them in order. I didn‘t and it is a decision that I still regret. There are things that happen here that I knew about because I read some of the later books first.

Act of Treason | Vince Flynn
Pickpick

I love Vince Flynn‘s Mitch Rapp, and I‘ve come to expect a certain proficiency in the writing. After an assassination attempt on the president-elect goes awry, Rapp is called in to investigate. It‘s a sold story with some nice twists, but it seems to missing something that the other thrillers have had. It offers a promising premise and a few really unexpected touches, but it‘s at the low end of the pick spectrum for me and very close to a so-so.

I have always been fascinated by these creations. This book not only goes into detail about the creation of the various eggs, but it also explains the influences under which Faberge labored. Also coming into play is the political turmoil that characterized much of the early 20th century. It really is an engrossing read and there are a number of photos of the eggs and the Romanov family. A must for lovers of history and high art!

This is not normally my type of book, but the story and the characters are quite compelling. The narrative focuses on two girls growing up near Naples in the years following World War II. Both are smart, but while Lina pursues an education, Lila goes to work with her brother and father in their shoemaking shop. It‘s a wonderful coming of age tale. Two minor quibbles: it can be hard to keep track of everyone and this is only the first book of four.

You have to give Ben Coes credit for devising plots that put his hero in grave danger and then managing to extricate him. When an operation goes terribly wrong, Dewey Andreas must sneak into North Korea and locate the antidote for a custom-made poison. The only problem is that Dewey has been poisoned and he has fewer than 24 hours to accomplish this task. Also compounding matters is a nuclear strike against the U.S. is imminent! It‘s a great read!

There is no denying the power of this book as it depicts the toll that war exacts in a young mans and his friends. There are beautifully lyrical passages juxtaposed with descriptions of utter savagery. I think I may search out other translations as well because there were a few stilted passages in the version I read. Hailed as one of the best war novels of all time, this is not an easy book, but it is still one that belongs on everyone‘s TBR list.
