Pocket Full of Colors
Pocket Full of Colors: The Magical World of Mary Blair, Disney Artist Extraordinaire | Amy Guglielmo, Jacqueline Tourville
10 posts | 15 read | 13 to read
Amy Guglielmo, Jacqueline Tourville, and Brigette Barrager team up to tell the joyful and unique story of the trailblazing Disney artist Mary Blair. Mary Blair lived her life in color: vivid, wild color. From her imaginative childhood to her career as an illustrator, designer, and animator for Walt Disney Studios, Mary wouldnt play by the rules. At a time when studios wanted to hire men and think in black and white, Mary painted twinkling emerald skies, peach giraffes with tangerine spots, and magenta horses that could fly. She painted her world.

2 ⭐This picture book biography is lacking in biography. It starts out interesting, but it takes so long to list various colors it deadens the rest of the story. The artwork is great, and the authors note at the end was way more informative than the pages of the book. I like this book, but it could‘ve been done better.

This B, RA book tells about how Mary Blair became a artist for Walt Disney Studios, during the Great Depression. I think it‘s a great story for students to read and learn that they can follow their dreams and become anything they want! I think they can also relate because they‘re probably familiar with art and pictures seen in Disney productions.

That website has more information about Mary Blair and would be fun for the students to explore to expand their knowledge after reading this book(even as a whole class)!
EL strategy 28 provide biographies and 29 offer reference materials work great for this book. UDL principals 2.5 illustrate through multiple media would be great with reading and exploring that website!

AlexRobinson So what on EARTH why have I never heard of this book??? Not only do I LOVE Disney, but I also enjoy learning about the Great Depression era and the hardships people had to work through. Just like you mentioned, what an inspiring story for kids to read! She did something others might have thought always a miracle. I can not WAIT to check this book out- awesome review!! 3y

Colorful and wonderfully illustrated story of Mary Blair, artist who designed It‘s a Small World ride at Disneyland.
Also a lesson in sticking to your dream when criticized.

Mrs_B Amazing cover and a lovely review. BUT now I have the song stuck in my head and it's just the most persistent earworm. 4y
megnews @Mrs_B it is!! 4y
Mrs_B How did you survive reading a whole book about it without going crazy?!? 4y
megnews @Mrs_B the majority of the book is actually about trying to bring color to the movie industry and being disregarded by male animation artists. She left. Disney then called her back to do the ride. That was at the end. 😀 4y
Mrs_B @megnews ahhhh that makes sense now, thank you! 4y

#NoFemmeber Day 3: Fats‘ review: “When Mary and her family moved to #California, Mary became inspired & mixed her paints, creating a variety of shades and hues. She saved these color combinations for future use. She met her husband Lee in art school. Mary Blair became one of the first women to be hired at Walt Disney Studios. She was in her happy place, except she worked with men who did not appreciate colors.” Full Review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-ijO

Billypar Looks like an inspirational story! The picture of the men staring critically at her pictures cracks me up...jerks! 😹👩‍🎨 5y

I read this one aloud to a group of girls for a sort of “girl power“story time, and they absolutely loved it. It‘s so fun to see all the bright colors, and to read about them too! .
.
The girls enjoyed how Mary persisted, how she became the boss, and finding parts of Disney in her illustrations. They were absolutely amazed at what she painted and the ride that she eventually created. An inspiring book for anyone who dreams in vivid color. #kidlit
