The Last Time I Lied
The Last Time I Lied: A Novel | Riley Sager
In the new novel from the bestselling author of Final Girls, The Last Time I Lied follows a young woman as she returns to her childhood summer camp to uncover the truth about a tragedy that happened there fifteen years ago. Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their tiny cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. The games ended when Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin in the dead of night. The last she--or anyone--saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips. Now a rising star in the New York art scene, Emma turns her past into paintings--massive canvases filled with dark leaves and gnarled branches that cover ghostly shapes in white dresses. The paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale. When Francesca implores her to return to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor, Emma sees an opportunity to try to find out what really happened to her friends. Yet it's immediately clear that all is not right at Camp Nightingale. Already haunted by memories from fifteen years ago, Emma discovers a security camera pointed directly at her cabin, mounting mistrust from Francesca and, most disturbing of all, cryptic clues Vivian left behind about the camp's twisted origins. As she digs deeper, Emma finds herself sorting through lies from the past while facing threats from both man and nature in the present. And the closer she gets to the truth about Camp Nightingale, the more she realizes it may come at a deadly price.

So so so good! This left my heart pounding and the ending had me yelling, “WTF!” I 100% recommend this book. The characters are relatable and the setting adds to the eerie feel of the story. I found myself back at the summer camp I spent many summers at which added to the already masterful suspense.

I finished this book before bed last night and my heart continued to race for at least thirty minutes after finishing. WOW. One of the better thrillers I‘ve read in awhile. I‘m definitely sold on Riley Sager‘s writing. His thrillers are fast paced and hard to put down. This book keeps the twists coming...even down until the very last page. Looking forward to reading his first book, “The Final Girls.”

A great read for summer nights, I loved the summer camp setting that took me back to some favorite 80s horror movies--even though it was set in the present & 15-years prior. Although I guessed several of the many twists & turns, I was surprised by others & the pacing, steadily built tension & gradual unraveling of all of the secrets of Camp Nightingale kept me turning the pages. Not scary, but a good creepy atmospheric vibe & solid thriller. 👍

I assigned the daunting task of picking my July TBR to my husband. He had to pick 7 books from this selection. What do you think he picked? You can find out here: https://youtu.be/2KJrYgqX4Ds

JenFowler My husband would blindly pick 7 and not even try to read the titles...lol 1mo
Butterflyamore @JenFowler Haha! Well, he was technically “forced” to cooperate but he does take book selection very seriously. I think, overall, he picked the books that HE would want to read! 😂 1mo

I thought it was slightly better than okay. It was a solid summer thriller but it took me about 100 pages to care, which for a thriller isn‘t great. I also predicted a lot of the twists. Worth it, but a tad overhyped for me.

Riley Sager does it again! Much like THE FINAL GIRLS, THE LAST TIME I LIED is a creepy, atmospheric summer thriller. Summer camp + missing girls + creepy legends about asylums and flooded towns = perfect beach read.

I found the ending a bit disappointing and the twist reveal fell flat for me. However, the suspense leading up to the end was so strong and compelling, it‘s still a five star read for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley

Victoriahoperose I really enjoyed this one too! I heard rumors that this is getting a movie or tv show adaptation as well as Final Girls! 1mo

Saturday morning: cold brew ☕️w/ coconut milk & my favorite avocado toast w/ spicy sriracha aioli on the patio of my local coffee shop which overlooks the marina. It's actually a bit sunnier that it looks so taking advantage of it before I run my errands & before today's humidity kicks in. Just starting this library e-book loan, on of about 4 concurrent books I have started. I enjoyed Final Girls so I'm hoping to like this one. Happy Saturday!☀️

Emma returns to Camp Nightingale 15 years after her cabin mates disappeared without a trace. She hopes to find out once and for all what happened to them, following clues that one of the girls left behind. Decent suspense with a great ending, but relies heavily on an unreliable narrator.

I liked, but did not love this one. The setting was great, but the characters felt really under developed. The book wasn‘t very long and probably could have used another ~50 pages of plot and character development. While I had figured out part of the twist fairly early on, I think the reveal at the end was done very well. Wondering if the ending is meant to set up a potential sequel. Thoughts?

In addition to Miracle Creek, I got these this month from @bookofthemonth! This was my first getting two add ons. Although $9.99 is a fantastic price for a brand new hardcover book, I‘ve only indulged in one add on in the past. But I don‘t have a car anymore so I don‘t have to pay for gas. I figured I may as well splurge!

If you subscribe to Book of the Month, what books did you get for April?

lele1432 Still contemplating...😩 I normally don't wait this long because shipping takes forever, but I haven't read last month's yet anyway lol. I'm thinking Miracle Creek, Normal People and interested in Descendant of the Crane, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone, Doing Justice and Player's Ball lol. 😩 3mo
Butterflyamore @lele1432 Haha! It is so hard to choose. I was debating between Maybe You Should Talk To Someone and The Last Time I Lied but I was worried the Riley Sager book would sell out soon because it‘s been available for a bit longer. 3mo

Three years ago I got lasik. This week they told me I have to start wearing reading glasses. Now I remember how much I hate wearing glasses! 😀

rretzler Ugh, yes. I‘ve worn contacts for 30+ years and am now at the point where I can either wear my multi-focal contacts so I can mostly see distance and sorta see my phone, but wear glasses for reading and computer (80% of my time) OR not wear contacts and wear glasses to see my computer, drive and just walk around basically. Either way, I end up wearing glasses most of the time 🙁 4mo

Book 28 of my year. Excited to read this one. It‘s a Book of The Month top pick from 2018. Also my first add on to my first box from them. Super happy I added them to my subscription box addiction 🤓 Gonna listen to Crywolf the new CD Widow is out & I can‘t get enough. Also coffee! I need coffee ➰🐺🎧📖🤓☕️

Caffeinated_Reader Meh. I think Vivian is my favorite character out of the whole book. Emma gets on my nerves. I think she enjoys holding onto her secrets and teasing them out one by one. The whole story is well threaded together but I would have done the ending waaay different. The ending made up my mind about Emma. She is a self righteous twat lmfao (edited) 4mo

Deliciously dark and wonderfully layered with a plethora of creepy twists and turns, this one kept me guessing right up until the end. Alternating between flashbacks and present day, the unreliable narrator and characters were written so well, it was difficult knowing who I could trust and I found myself suspecting everyone at one time or another. Creepy, mysterious and with a suitably eerie setting, this was compulsively intoxicating.

This was the perfect thriller for me – lots of red herrings, an unreliable narrator, and several twists that I just didn‘t see coming! I read “Final Girls” by this author, but this one left me way more satisfied. The story centers around the mystery of three girls going missing at Camp Nightingale 15 years ago. Their cabinmate, Emma, decides to return to the camp in the present to finally discover what really happened to her friends. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is exactly the kind of mystery I crave. I've read a lot of mysteries set in boarding schools and high schools lately, but this is the first mystery I recall reading with a summer camp setting and it worked beautifully. So much built in creepiness. I also thought the author did a terrific job developing the character of the narrator. I did not see the end coming at all! And that's exactly what I like in a mystery. Chilling and very well-told.
