The Last Time I Lied
The Last Time I Lied: A Novel | Riley Sager
In the new novel from the bestselling author of Final Girls, The Last Time I Lied follows a young woman as she returns to her childhood summer camp to uncover the truth about a tragedy that happened there fifteen years ago. Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their tiny cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. The games ended when Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin in the dead of night. The last she--or anyone--saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips. Now a rising star in the New York art scene, Emma turns her past into paintings--massive canvases filled with dark leaves and gnarled branches that cover ghostly shapes in white dresses. The paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale. When Francesca implores her to return to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor, Emma sees an opportunity to try to find out what really happened to her friends. Yet it's immediately clear that all is not right at Camp Nightingale. Already haunted by memories from fifteen years ago, Emma discovers a security camera pointed directly at her cabin, mounting mistrust from Francesca and, most disturbing of all, cryptic clues Vivian left behind about the camp's twisted origins. As she digs deeper, Emma finds herself sorting through lies from the past while facing threats from both man and nature in the present. And the closer she gets to the truth about Camp Nightingale, the more she realizes it may come at a deadly price.

This one just did not do it for me. The premise, young Emma‘s perspective/recollection and a couple of the twists were good. But the behavior of …most… of the characters is so inconsistent. Minute to minute accusing eachother of murder/misdeeds, blurting out every half thought out suspect and motive (including one‘s from 1904) but then missing the very obvious and running around half cocked… infuriatinggggg.

This is my second Riley Sager book and I‘m liking it, but not loving it! I‘m just ready to finish it. Emma, the MC, is so annoying! I just want to know what happened!

How are his other books??

JacqMac The Final Girls was pretty good. But I didn‘t love The Last Time I Lied. So she‘s hit or miss for me so far. 2mo

Ummm meh? Anyone else get Pretty Little Liar vibes from this?
I found the MC fairly unreal- her thoughts, her actions, it just didn't add up for me. Also the various twists in the mystery were kind of more annoying than anything especially when the "first big one"(?) just fizzled out. Like poof, oh no that's really nothing. Oh ok.
I finished it, wasn't terrible but all I'll remember is mean girls at camp and shit goes wrong.

2022 Reads continued......

LTIL - better than LED, as usual with his novels the last 3rd is better, I can usually guess who the culprit is from about a 3rd in, and then the final twist throws you.I still think HBD is his best work to date. Will read THATL when its a cheap £1.99. Riley Sager is always a great holiday quick read.

This was definitely a fast paced read and I enjoyed the journey but once again I‘m dissatisfied with the ending. Perhaps Riley Sager isn‘t for me!?!? That said I think I have three more of his books in my TBR pile, so still time to be wowed.

Between getting COVID,followed by my husband, then going out of town for my father-in-law‘s funeral, my reading life has been almost non-existent lately. I‘m finally back home and feeling well again today, so the first thing on my agenda was to finally finish this book which I started way back on May 31st. I‘d heard so much about Riley Sager that maybe this book was a little over-hyped for me. It ended up being fine but nothing memorable about it.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ The writing is done well enough. As you read, you may smell the campfire burning underneath the evening sky, hear mosquitoes buzzing amidst children‘s laughter, & feel the coolness of a breeze drifting across Lake Midnight. The book was entertaining, & I found it to be a quick read. However, as a mystery/suspense story, I wanted more of a plot twist. I found the ending predictable, which was disappointing. 📄: 370

An engaging enough mystery, but overall I remain baffled at the amount of hype Sager's books have garnered. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hooked_on_books Thank you! I am not a fan of Sager and do not get the love at all. I feel like he does a lot of writing with almost no plot, and thrillers are basically all plot! 11mo

I wanted a spooky read and “The Last I Lied” gave me chills throughout the book. The amount of plot twists throughout the book kept me guessing until the very end, and even then the outcome wasn‘t what I expected! Sager did a great job of weaving the mystery throughout the book while filling the multiple plot holes; plus that ending was killer 😏

4 💫💫💫💫 This was a great suspense novel, but dragged on near the end. I didn't know who was the bad guy until the end so that was fun. I think the cover photo is a bit dramatic but that's just my opinion. This was a fun warm up read for scary October.

I am way disappointed in Riley! This book was no where near as good as any of the others. I didn‘t care for any of the people in this book. There was way too much repetition and dragging stuff out. Main protagonist was the most annoying ever! Too many unbelievable situations and reactions.
I can‘t believe this took me this long to read. I kept putting it down cause my mind would just wonder off.

This book was exactly what I needed, a wonderful summer camp thriller! I usually can tell where a book is going halfway through, about 5 pages from the end I thought “dang there‘s going to be so many plot holes in this.” And Riley Sage wrapped it all up in about 5 pages, he stuck that landing 4🌟 #botm

My book club‘s June pick and it was just okay to me. I felt like so much of it was unlikely and that it moved at a snail‘s pace.

However: my stepdad passed away while I was reading this and I 100% feel like that clouded my enjoyment of it. How could it not, right? Normally I love Riley Sager‘s work but I think me feeling so “meh” about this one was purely related to what I had going on in real life. I‘m sad to give this one a “so-so” but 🤷🏻‍♀️

This was a reread for me and it was as amazing as the first time. I feel like this is my favorite Riley Sager book and always will be. It reminds me of the good 80s horror movies that take place at camp or in the woods, where every shadow has something mysterious lurking or watching every move the characters make. Highly recommend!!

So I‘m officially a Riley Sager fan now. Set in two time periods: the present and 15 years ago. At an exclusive overnight camp, 3 teenage girls have disappeared. Through the POV of Emma, a 13 year old who came to camp late and Ed Ed up in a cabin with older girls.
Through the whole book I could never tell who was telling the truth.
