Broken Girls
Broken Girls | Simone St James
A breakout suspense novel from the award-winning author of The Haunting of Maddy Clare. Vermont, 1950. There's a place for the girls whom no one wants--the troublemakers, the illegitimate, the too smart for their own good. It's called Idlewild Hall. And in the small town where it's located, there are rumors that the boarding school is haunted. Four roommates bond over their whispered fears, their budding friendship blossoming--until one of them mysteriously disappears. . . . Vermont, 2014. As much as she's tried, journalist Fiona Sheridan cannot stop revisiting the events surrounding her older sister's death. Twenty years ago, her body was found lying in the overgrown fields near the ruins of Idlewild Hall. And though her sister's boyfriend was tried and convicted of murder, Fiona can't shake the suspicion that something was never right about the case. When Fiona discovers that Idlewild Hall is being restored by an anonymous benefactor, she decides to write a story about it. But a shocking discovery during the renovations will link the loss of her sister to secrets that were meant to stay hidden in the past--and a voice that won't be silenced. . . .

A different kind of ghost story, I enjoyed the slow buildup and light twist.

“Books were her salvation.” “That‘s what books did-they turned off your thinking for you.” -Sonja, 1950

I‘m really enjoying this books so far. I saw @crimebythebook recommendations the other week on her instagram and had to grab it from the library.

It has a very creepy feel to it and I‘m liking it.

I think this book is excellent for the right type of reader. If you want a mystery with a ghost story element and something that isn't very scary, it is the perfect book for you! I generally prefer my mystery books to have a bit more of a scare factor, and overall I thought the mystery had too many components to it, but I can absolutely see why the right type of reader would fall in love with this book.

Decent mystery with a little ghost story woven in. Just not quite mysterious or scary enough for me though. Great story, huge potential but it didn't really get there.

Another great read from Ms. St. James!! This author never disappoints. The multiple mysteries made the wheels in my head turning in this one. This was a fast read for me but only because the storyline was so well-written and I couldn't wait to know what happens at the end.

This book was a mixture of supernatural and mystery. I was a little concerned at first that the supernatural aspect would turn me off to the novel, but I felt it added to the mystery. This book wasn‘t what I was expecting, however it was a very good read! I found it a little slow going at first but it quickly picked up.

Two cold case murder mysteries in one. The 1950 story was especially well done. A chilling and hauntingly good read.

This was part ghost story, part mystery. I picked it up for the ghost story part of it and found myself enjoying the mystery aspect of it too. I thought it was good. Right up until the very very unrealistic ending (keep in mind, there was an actual ghost in this and yet the most unrealistic part of it was the villain). I was waiting for the villain to start twirling his mustache as he monologued. #ghost #coolcover #mystery

This thriller very successfully pulled me out of the reading rut I‘ve been in lately. It had badass women and it had ghosts, both literal and figurative. It also had coincidences that strained credulity, but that‘s what fiction is for 🙌🧳👻

It was a mix of both high (waited to borrow from library for ~9 months) and missed expectations for me. I just don‘t think that St. James pulled off the two different storylines well enough — potentially the time gap between them was just too large. I really only liked the past girls. The ending sentiments were nice but came out of no where IMO. And the ghost story on top of everything was just too much! Simplification would have helped

Yes! What a fun read! “The Broken Girls” is like a grown up version of telling a ghost story around the campfire.

A boarding school for girls that (yes, not a secret) is haunted! A journalist is determined to find out just what happened in this school back in the 1950s.

Creepy and haunting. After finishing this book, “Mary Hand...” might be stuck in your head!

Wooo!! Had such a great weekend—learned a lot from the #24in48 I did last year so I definitely had a wider variety of books to read and tried my best to save books for this weekend that I was most interested in reading. Overall finished two audio books, one novel, three graphic novels and am halfway through my last read. Also made it over my personal goal of 20 hours woo!! Hope everyone had as much fun as I did 😊

We had 6” of snow overnight and it‘s still coming down, so we‘re making the best of the day as we weren‘t able to go to Chicago to The Lightning Thief musical as planned. Younger one has a friend over, oldest is playing D&D with friends, and DH is going to watch football. I‘m curled up under a blanket with a good read. All things considered, not a bad day.
