#USS #WinterGames

Hi, Ugly Sweaters and all @WinterGames Participants:
I will try to post a Readathon bulletin every day in the hopes that it will help you and me keep track of all of these wonderful reading events. I fit them all on one board, so all you have to do is look at this board as your first step to see which readathons you participated in for that day.

Shoutouts and thank-yous to all of the wonderful Litsy hosts is below. 🩵❄️🩵

Clwojick Hey guys! @dabbe is FAR more organized than I am when it comes to the daily events, so check back on her profile frequently if you‘d like to refer to her event lists. ❤️ #TeamEvergreen 🌲 @TEArificbooks @Larkken @LizPixie @Jadams1776 @vonnie862 @PathfinderNicole @skygoddess1 @AsYouWish🎄 4d
dabbe @Clwojick I couldn't have done ANY of this without you, @StayCurious and all of our other lovely leaders/hosts/creators! 🩵❄️🩵 4d

AnnR @dabbe, I hope you don't mind me adding this info... Since I was confused about readathon participation criteria, I posted a question yesterday on my homepage. A lot of very helpful hosts gave specific answers for their individual readathon(s) requirements. You can check it out here:

Hunter of Stories | Eduardo Galeano

Pickpick

This is a book of stories, no doubt, but the vast majority are a minute or shorter! Less than a handful are 3 or fewer minutes. It could be hard to grasp some of it since they are so short and I listened to it rather than read it. But some “stories” were so profound, I‘m going to have to find the IRL book. The author was from #Uruguay but he shared morsels from all over the world: quotes, news, history, thoughts. But I did love his references ⬇️

Texreader to his love of soccer (football) and the team from Uruguay that won the World Cup in 1950. The storyteller went from thoughtful and sedate to leaping out of the speakers with delight talking about soccer. While a few things I didn‘t like, including his reverence for some politics, I found this book so rewarding. A completely unexpected and delightful choice for #readingtheAmericas. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 2w
Librarybelle Sounds very interesting! 2w
Aimeesue I always mean to read more Galeano. I read Children of the Days and really loved it. Such a different style. He says so much with so few words. 2w

Shakerism attracted the poorest of the poor in #SaintVincentandtheGrenadines, mostly descendants of slaves, who couldn‘t afford the “fees” to belong to the established religions. Shakers worshipped God with their whole bodies, shouting and (heaven forbid, apparently) jumping, which those opposed attributed to barbaric African culture. After decades of oppression, a law was passed in 1912 prohibiting it. Then came decades to try to repeal it. ⬇️

Texreader This book (yes, the cover has no title) describes the many attempts to repeal the law and the arguments by those opposed. It is extraordinarily well-researched, cited, and well-written. It‘s very legalese, but since I‘m an attorney used to it, I found it comfortable reading for the subject matter, although sometimes tedious. The subtle points are made brilliantly though—the importance of freedom of religion and how easily it can be taken away. ⬇️ 2w
Texreader And how difficult it can be to get that freedom back. I‘m so glad I chose to read this book simply by its unusual title and the fact the islands were in the #readingtheAmericas challenge. @librarybelle @BarbaraBB 2w

Yesterday and today I finished the last two books of the #readingtheAmericas challenge hosted by @Librarybelle and @BarbaraBB that I‘ll review separately. For every year I‘ve participated in their continent challenges I feel I have gained so much as a person learning about our world. This year‘s challenge hit close to home, since it is home. Thank you ladies for hosting these amazing challenges

And now…gearing up for #wintergames!! @Emilymdxn

BarbaraBB Thank you for participating and taking the challenge to another level! Looking forward to #ReadingOceania24! 2w
Librarybelle Thank you so much for participating! I love reading your posts about the books! 2w
Texreader @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle Thanks y‘all! I‘ve loved doing these challenges. 2w

Texreader @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB I‘ve finally got the StoryGraph app so I can more easily track my challenges. Was this year‘s challenge on the app? If so, would you mind sending me the link? 2w
Texreader @Librarybelle Thank you! It may take me all night to get the books entered! 😄 2w
BarbaraBB It‘ll be fun to scroll through it again and see all the books you read 2w
Texreader @BarbaraBB I see that! I‘m about halfway done and it‘s 1:20 am. So I‘m calling it a night. But I anticipate spending a lot of time catching up with entering all my other challenges! 2w
Librarybelle 😁 2w

This lasted for more than 50 years despite numerous efforts to repeal the law. It was finally repealed in 1965!

Finishing this book on Thanksgiving helps me to realize what more I have to be grateful for, at least for now. May our constitutional rights be protected from insidious invasion

This book is such a testament to freedom of religion. Imagine this, after decades of repression

The prohibition against practicing the Shaker religion was, likely, based on racism and remnants of colonialism.

From a #SaintVincent newspaper editorial in 1939. Heaven forbid repealing a law that prohibited practicing religion as the masses saw fit. If that happened then the state couldn‘t censor films and literature and protect the masses from themselves! Oh how history repeats itself.

This is one incident in which five people were convicted after Shakerism was outlawed in 1912 in #SaintVincentandtheGrenadines This is from one of the arresting officers‘ reports. The established religious couldn‘t stand Shakerism and called it barbarism from Africa, since it was mainly practiced by the poor—the descendants of slaves. #readingtheAmericas @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Written in poetry this is a beautiful, haunting story of the wars fought in Cuba to gain independence from Spain. The main character is Rosa a slave turned nurse who hides in the countryside helping all who cross her path regardless of allegiance. At the moment though it was Silvia a young girl escaped from the (first) ‘re concentration ‘ camps after all her family died of starvation or disease who might stay with me longest
