Frankenstein (Collins Classics)
Frankenstein (Collins Classics) | Mary Shelley
HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. The rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open Victor Frankenstein s monster is stitched together from the limbs of the dead, taken from the dissecting room and the slaughter-house . The result is a grotesque being who, rejected by his maker and starved of human companionship, sets out on a journey to seek his revenge. In the most famous gothic horror story ever told, Shelley confronts the limitations of science, the nature of human cruelty and the pathway to forgiveness.Begun when Mary Shelley was only eighteen years old and published two years later, this chilling tale of a young scientist s desire to create life and the consequences of that creation still resonate today."

I‘m wanting something a bit more on the horror side so I picked up these three classics. Which one would you all recommend?

Victoriahoperose The Haunting of Hill House is awesome. Definitely go for that one. It‘s creepy, excellent writing, good twists and all the film adaptations are pretty fun to watch! 1w
Saw629 @Victoriahoperose I saw that there was a Netflix adaptation of it! Do you know if that‘s worth a watch after I read the book? 1w
Palimpsest Frankenstein is one of my favorite books that also has the theme of the sublime and questioning who really are the monsters of society. Haunting of Hill House i just read and is a book full of terror/ psychological more than gore and very good. The silent Companions is also a good creepy read. 1w

Victoriahoperose The Netflix show was very good. Lots of nods to Shirley Jackson. It is important to know before going in that it is not the same story. But, there is a lot that will come together if you love the book. It‘s a solidly spooky adaptation that was well researched, in my opinion. Can‘t wait to see what you think when you get to it!! 1w
Saw629 @Palimpsest Dolls are one of my personal phobias that I‘ve been trying to conquer for a while, so I might give The Silent Companions a try if not just to see if I can make it through it. Thanks for the recommendation! 1w
Palimpsest @saw629 those are really the spookiest books I‘ve read aside from Dracula, haha. If you read my review of The Haunting of Hill house you will see it‘s the scariest book I‘ve ever read because I don‘t usually like horror. It‘s definitely more troubling than Frankenstein. Whatever you choose, enjoy! 1w
tpixie @Victoriahoperose @Saw629 I also enjoyed the Haunting of hill house. I found it creepy but not too scary. I loved the Netflix show- the nods to the book, the acting, the characters. It was scarier than the book. But it all came together so well!!! 1w
bookandcat Adooooooore Frankenstein! Not super scary but a powerful book. 1w
Eggs Welcome to Litsy 🤗👏🏻 1w

Since I had the sewing kit set up....

Call me Dr Frankenstein 👿👿👿

My son's favourite long-sleeved sweater got too short in the sleeves. I cut them off, cut the spines out of the sleeves and attached thfm to the back of the sweater. Purposefully slightly wonky.

I so hope he likes it.

Book #27: There are many stories on this list that quickly fade from memory. Upon looking at a synopsis I can often regain what the story was about and some plot details but many are just unremarkable. Frankenstein is not one of those books. I recall this book in vivid detail, despite writing this 15 years after initially reading the book. The...

Frankenstein is so gifted in the natural sciences that he is able to create a living creature. Partly human, partly monstrous this creature takes control of Frankenstein‘s life.
I‘m glad I finally read this classic but that‘s about it. Enjoyable, no more no less.

Definitely in my top ten favorite books. The writing was so beautiful. You understood the emotions of each character which made you love and hate their characteristics. The whole book was a huge adventure, literally and emotionally. I couldn‘t express how much I fell in love with this story. I will have to read this again in the future. ❤️

Forever Amber is one of my very favourite #historicalfiction novels ever. This list is VERY interesting list.. I may have to make it a point to get busy crossing many more off it.

Book 2/12 for the #BookFitnessChallenge #BFC Finally read this classic, and I'm so glad I did! It was such a quick read and so much more interesting than the pop culture references we generally get. Good dramatic, tragic Gothic romance read, which I always enjoy on #SerialReader. Empathized with Frankenstein and with his creation, but mostly loved poor Henry. 😂 @SerialReader @wanderinglynn

marleed You Go! I‘m impressed. I think on my next book challenge I will commit to books of literary significance. There‘s just so many I want to read but I‘m a sucker for a new release and seeing how fast I can get it from the library. 1mo
Caterina @CoffeeNBooks @nu-bibliophile @wanderinglynn I enjoyed it a lot!! @marleed Thanks! I think a lot of new releases have as much literary merit as the classics, but I definitely enjoy trying to read the classics that have become part of our culture! And some of them are some of the best books I've ever read, like One Hundred Years of Solitude! 1mo
BookwormAHN Great job, I'm due for a Frankenstein reread myself 👏🏻 1mo
Palimpsest I finally read Frankenstein last year and for me it‘s one of the best books I‘ve ever read. I‘m now reading a biography about Mary Shelley. 1mo
Caterina @Palimpsest Wow so glad you enjoyed it so much! Have you read any other Mary Shelley you'd recommend? 1mo
Palimpsest @Caterina no, I haven‘t looked into her other works yet, but I know she‘s written at least five other novels and short stories as well as a travel journal and letters. I guess I loved the idea of who truly are the monsters in society, the idea of obsession turned to repulsion and I love the theme of the Sublime within Frankenstein. Also, the more I learn about her and her parents as radicals/ Revolutionaries of the times I am fascinated. 1mo
Palimpsest I just got this biography, Romantic Outlaws, about Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley which I should be reading soon. 1mo
Palimpsest @Caterina I was reading In Search of Mary Shelley, but there was some supposition within the text that feels overreaching to me so I wanted to read another biography. 1mo

Early Saturday morning. Devoting time to a study in humanity, monstrosity, the relentless chase after too much knowledge, the primal struggle against the darkness within, spiritual awakening...the desire to be more than ‘man‘...to be God-like...to be God...to be able to shout out “It is alive!”
Yes, it‘s true that I know Victor only from the movies, but today...today I shall begin to see another side.

Love this cover! I‘ve been wanting to read this for a long time but I seem to have trouble with these older books.

TheReadingMermaid It is hard to read the language of older books especially this one. I found that her description of scenery was a bit overtaxed. But the key with these types of books is to just take your time and enjoy what you're reading. Remember the time (century) this book was written in and enjoy it for the priceless work of art that it is. Happy reading sweetheart! 🤗 2mo
rretzler When you get past the language, the story is wonderful! Most people reading it for the first time do not expect it to be the book that it is. I agree with @TheReadingMermaid it is a priceless work of art! Good luck - it‘s worth the read! 2mo

Centique I love this 😍 And I love the book. I think because I studied it at university and went in blind not knowing Shelley was going to upend what we think is monstrous. 💕 2mo
rohit-sawant @Centique Sorry for the late reply! And yes! I was acquainted with the character only through pop culture (I think the first time was in Scooby Doo) and went in with certain expectations and was so surprised by her poetic and layered treatment of it. Penny Dreadful came closest to capturing the spirit of the book. God, I miss that show! 2mo
Centique @rohit-sawant I never saw Penny Dreadful - I must see if I can find it anywhere. 2mo
rohit-sawant @Centique It's available on Netflix. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it! 2mo
Centique @rohit-sawant not in NZ unfortunately. We seem to only get a subset of what the rest of the world has - Netflix must face some kind of extra cost for Australasian rights so our tv and movie backlist here is pitiful. ☹️ 2mo
rohit-sawant @Centique Ugh, I can relate. It's the same in my corner of the world. There's a whole bunch of content that's unavailable simply because of regional restrictions. It's the same case with Spotify as well. Hope it sees a release in NZ soon! 🤞🏼 2mo

While this was an assigned book for my Eng Comp class it wasn‘t a terrible read. I did like learning the true origins of the creature and Frankenstein, and could relate to some parts as well.
Although some of the LENGTHY descriptions of the setting and the flowery language often times bored me.
