I loved this! A YA biography, at times stretching the line into historical fiction, told in free verse, printed over full page black and white watercolor illustrations. It‘s moody, evocative, and emotional. It does a great job of capturing the often overlooked fact that the woman who wrote the masterpiece we still regard was the same age as the target audience for this book, and shows what her life was and where that masterpiece originated .

Kenyazero Wow! This book sounds like it has a lot to offer! 😮 4mo

I've always known that Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was amazing, but now I admire her even more. This no-nonsense biography may be a little dry in its style, but it is very well researched and attempts to separate fact from rumour. It describes Mary's strength and how she was able to deal with the many tragedies life dealt her, explains the seeming controversies behind her attitudes, and draws the portrait of an exceptional figure. Great read.

Amazing! 🤩

I can't sing enough praise about this book. It is written in free verse with gorgeous illustrations on every page. The way the words and the graphics come together are flawless.

I borrowed this from my library, but I will definitely buy myself a copy for my shelves.

Excited to start my day with this novel about Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter, Mary Shelley. #TBR #historicalfiction #cofffeeandbooks
I have read & studied both women‘s works and am fascinated with their courage to publish their ideas that were way beyond the thinking of the times they lived in. Both actively read today. #20in4 #readathon

Cinfhen I haven‘t read her before…what else do u recommend ??? 11mo
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen I've read 2 others by her - A is for Arsenic (about Agatha Christie and the poisons she uses in her novels) and Death by Shakespeare (about his methods of killing his characters). There's also books about vampires, James Bond, scientific molecules and elements, but I haven't read them yet! 11mo
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen the James Bond and Molecule ones aren't available in paperback yet. 11mo

Not for me. Disappointing as I really wanted to like this book. Truly. It was just too ambitious a task. Writing a novel from the POV of two incredibly accomplished and renowned writers, Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley, you must emulate their style and voice. That‘s where this book fails for me. It‘s not convincing. The language is remarkably ordinary. Thornton quotes MW and MWS often but it just highlights the inadequacy of the writing.

SamAnne Uh, unstacked! 11mo
Cuilin @SamAnne I honestly was frustrated when reading it. Luckily I borrowed it on Libby! 11mo

It is only 4 o‘clock; but it is winter and the sun has already set: there are no clouds in the clear, frosty sky, to reflect it slant beams, but the air itself is tinged with a slight roseate color which is again reflected on the snow that covers the ground. I live in a lone cottage on a solitary, wide heath: no voice of life, reaches me.
There‘s much that annoyed me but I can‘t deny the writing is exquisite. #funsizefiction

Cuilin This much debated novella is basically a first draft. After her father confiscated MWS‘s manuscript, it took another 100 years for it to be published. The subject of incestual desire though shocking, the idea that it was somehow autobiographical makes for an interesting read. I found it to be a self indulgent and overwrought, melodrama . It needed editing, but the writing oh my gosh so beautiful. 12mo
