Youll lose a lot of sleep.Ralph does. At first he starts waking up earlier. And earlier. Then the hallucinations start the colours, shapes and strange auras. Not to mention the bald doctors who always turn up at the scene of a death.Thats when Ralph begins to lose a lot more than sleep. When he begins to understand why his hitherto mild-mannered friend, Ed, is getting out of control dangerously so. And why his home town is about to become the new Armageddon...Insomnia is a relentless waking nightmare in which the master of horror and suspense guarantees you sure wont rest in peace.

I don‘t have a chronic insomnia but last night was a bad one.I‘m lucky I don‘t have anything I can‘t put off today but caring for myself and pets but what a drag. To those who struggle with this often, hugs to you! I finally remembered that sometimes the Get Sleepy podcast works , did last night/morning.

Absolutely incredible. I'd never read Insomnia before, and was unprepared for what an amazing story it would tell. As senior citizens, the protagonists are blessed with an extra layer of likeability and, at times, pathos that truly invest the reader in their story and perspective. The unexpected ties to The Dark Tower were a welcome bonus. 5/5

“Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes earlier, until he‘s barely sleeping at all. During his late night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people‘s heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.”

AmyG This was the best audiobook I ever listened to….read by Eli Wallach. 12mo
deeannloso @AmyG The best audiobook narrator I‘ve ever listened to is Frank Muller. He read many of Stephen King‘s books and many other popular books as well. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2008. 12mo
AmyG I will have to look for what he narrated. Thank you. 12mo

I listened to the audio, and the audio was ok; I guess I lost interest periodically, but I don‘t think it was the narrator or the audio at fault. This is one of, if not the, book I‘ve rated the lowest by King (of what I‘ve read, which is quite a bit), as he is one of my favourite authors. There were parts that I “liked” (or at least found more interesting), like the domestic abuse situation, but much of it just didn‘t interest me.

This was a unique story- there are elements of science fiction, fantasy, and action, and the heroes are septuagenarians. I thought it was well-paced, and I loved the connections to The Dark Tower and It. I stayed up past my bedtime to finish!

Newest additions & late birthday gift to myself to my "Stephen King" shelf. Insomnia & Night Shift. Now I can continue working my way through King's work in publication order because with the exception of Danse Macabre (which I still need) I have the next 13 books. That should keep me busy for awhile.

Gotta get those CEs in for my license. At least this one is more interesting than my last one. I‘ve stayed awake so far. Which is a nifty trick since according to Fitbit, I only slept 4 hours last night. 🤣🤣

CocoReads @Suet624 eh, not really. Nothing beyond the obvious. I did stay awake, but I can‘t say I was paying a whole lot of attention either. I do better with the ones where you read an article and answer questions but I have to do 5 “live” ones and sadly, they‘re like audio books to me—I either fall asleep, or get distracted and lose focus. 3y

1. Okay, this is the hardest question ever! I think I'd have an easier time picking which finger I'd rather have lopped off then which King book is my favorite. The Stand goes without saying along with Dr. Sleep and my first two favorites were Insomnia and Hearts in Atlantis.
2. Hmmm.🤔 I'd say Roland & Atropos & his trusty, rusty scalpel.
#spookysaturday @TheNeverendingTBR

WJCintron Favorite book: Desperation I forgot the names of the characters on Mr Mercedes but those are mine!! 😜😃👍 3y
KathyWheeler Oh my! This is difficult. Favorite book: 11/22/63, Doctor Sleep, The Dead Zone, The Stand, and The Talisman. Also the Mr. Mercedes trilogy. Favorite character: Roland, Randall Flagg, Rose the Hat, the adult Dan Torrance, Mike Hanlon, Dolores Claiborne, and Susannah Dean. (edited) 3y
Jennaree3 Misery and the character Annie Wilkes! I feel like King captured the genuine panic Paul felt under her care with her wild and unpredictable mood swings. She was such a nut! 3y

TheNeverendingTBR Thanks for the tag Rach, I've not read Insomnia for a long time; I did like it though. One of my favourite parts was when the main character (Ralph, whom I really liked) is up late at night and he sees the bald doctors with their scissors enter a old woman's house - that bit stuck with me. 3y
TheNeverendingTBR I also think that reading The Dark Tower series, THEN reading this would make more sense at parts; like when the guy is rambling on about the Crimson King etc. 3y
DGRachel @TheNeverendingTBR I‘m always amazed at how many of King‘s novels have references to The Dark Tower series. I haven‘t read enough of his books (or of the series itself) to know all the connections. 3y
IamIamIam You guys are awesome!!! I bailed on my King reread ages ago but I love your posts! I remember absolutely loving this book but I don't remember anything about it! 😂 3y
CaffeineAndCandy @TheNeverendingTBR @DGRachel I read a couple of the books from the Dark Tower series in high school. Pretty much all I remember is that the MC's name is Roland. Roland is also mentioned in Insomnia. 3y
CaffeineAndCandy I love how King tackles subjects like abortion while his personal stance on the subject is not revealed. 3y
CaffeineAndCandy I did wonder why Ralph saw the little bald doctors before Lois when Lois had been not sleeping and seeing the colors or auras longer than Ralph had been seeing them...I guess it's all part of the Puropse? 3y
CaffeineAndCandy This question is for all the ladies: if you were Lois would you have taken the slip off when she lost weight and it was troubling her on the journey she and Ralph were taking? I think I would have taken it off. 3y
CaffeineAndCandy Another question: Ralph was advised by Dorrance to cancel the appointment he had made with the acupuncturist whom Joe Wyzer the pharmacist had recommended. Would you have cancelled due to Dorrance's "prophecy." I believe I would have cancelled...it was just too coincidental not to take heed to Dorrance's warnung 3y
CaffeineAndCandy Question: How do you think the Bodyguard debilitating pepper spray got into Ralph's coat pocket? Ralph said he himself did not put it there, and as he was being slowly stabbed with the knife at the library he too wondered how it had gotten inside of his pocket. 3y
DGRachel @TheNeverendingTBR @IamIamIam Do you have thoughts on @CaffeineAndCandy ‘s questions? I haven‘t read this one. 3y
IamIamIam @DGRachel @CaffeineAndCandy I wish I could discuss this but I barely remember the story beyond an old man and 3 little guys with a big scissor. 🤦‍♀️ Lol, I read it when it came out in paperback so mid-90s? I'm sorry!!! 3y

My daughter and I have both been struggling with sleep lately. My daughter has been up until 3am, no matter what time we put her to bed, which then keeps me up. Last night I ended up not sleeping at all which lead to a 3 hour nap.

LazyOwl I know how this feels. My daughter had a lot of health problems when she was a baby and she was up in the night crying a lot. It's exhausting, but it does get better eventually. I hope you get some rest soon. 3y

#68 of my year. Gonna dive into this chunky book I think it‘s under 800 pages but it‘s heavy and I love it lol 🤓👌🏽

Caffeinated_Reader The first 500 pages or so were great. The story was grabbing and the characters were great. But after they reached a certain point in their mission (after the woman‘s shelter) I was ready for the book to tie up and be done. The last about 200 pages gave me anxiety because I was so done with the whole thing. 4y
Caffeinated_Reader I kept thinking good god man can you just get your old ass to the right place and stop telling me about everything you see...there are lives at stake! Lol a lot could have been better had it ended at about 550 or 600 pages. 4y

Took me some time to finish, it was a #chunkster... not that I‘d expect much else from King. It started with a bang, and had lots of great connections to his other works, It and The Dark Tower series in particular, but it did feel like it dragged a little. Not that that deterred my crying towards the end (even knowing what was coming)... As I‘m late to the Stephen King game, it‘s shocked me how many of his 📚 have had me blubbering 😭

Overall I really enjoyed this book.
There were a couple of points towards the end that were a bit silly and I felt took away from the story, and the epilogue, although it did tie up some loose ends, wasn't completely necessary. But, that's got to be hard to avoid when you've written over 700 pages already!
