I Know This Much Is True
I Know This Much Is True | Wally Lamb
With his stunning debut novel, She's Come Undone, Wally Lamb won the adulation of critics and readers with his mesmerizing tale of one woman's painful yet triumphant journey of self-discovery. Now, this brilliantly talented writer returns with I Know This Much Is True, a heartbreaking and poignant multigenerational saga of the reproductive bonds of destruction and the powerful force of forgiveness. A masterpiece that breathtakingly tells a story of alienation and connection, power and abuse, devastation and renewal--this novel is a contemporary retelling of an ancient Hindu myth. A proud king must confront his demons to achieve salvation. Change yourself, the myth instructs, and you will inhabit a renovated world. When you're the same brother of a schizophrenic identical twin, the tricky thing about saving yourself is the blood it leaves on your bands--the little inconvenience of the look-alike corpse at your feet. And if you're into both survival of the fittest and being your brother's keeper--if you've promised your dying mother--then say so long to sleep and hello to the middle of the night. Grab a book or a beer. Get used to Letterman's gap-toothed smile of the absurd, or the view of the bedroom ceiling, or the influence of random selection. Take it from a godless insomniac. Take it from the uncrazy twin--the guy who beat the biochemical rap.Dominick Birdsey's entire life has been compromised and constricted by anger and fear, by the paranoid schizophrenic twin brother he both deeply loves and resents, and by the past they shared with their adoptive father, Ray, a spit-and-polish ex-Navy man (the five-foot-six-inch sleeping giant who snoozed upstairs weekdays in the spare room and built submarines at night), and their long-suffering mother, Concettina, a timid woman with a harelip that made her shy and self-conscious: She holds a loose fist to her face to cover her defective mouth--her perpetual apology to the world for a birth defect over which she'd had no control.Born in the waning moments of 1949 and the opening minutes of 1950, the twins are physical mirror images who grow into separate yet connected entities: the seemingly strong and protective yet fearful Dominick, his mother's watchful "monkey"; and the seemingly weak and sweet yet noble Thomas, his mother's gentle "bunny." From childhood, Dominick fights for both separation and wholeness--and ultimately self-protection--in a house of fear dominated by Ray, a bully who abuses his power over these stepsons whose biological father is a mystery. I was still afraid of his anger but saw how he punished weakness--pounced on it. Out of self-preservation I hid my fear, Dominick confesses. As for Thomas, he just never knew how to play defense. He just didn't get it.But Dominick's talent for survival comes at an enormous cost, including the breakup of his marriage to the warm, beautiful Dessa, whom he still loves. And it will be put to the ultimate test when Thomas, a Bible-spouting zealot, commits an unthinkable act that threatens the tenuous balance of both his and Dominick's lives. To save himself, Dominick must confront not only the pain of his past but the dark secrets he has locked deep within himself, and the sins of his ancestors--a quest that will lead him beyond the confines of his blue-collar New England town to the volcanic foothills of Sicily 's Mount Etna, where his ambitious and vengefully proud grandfather and a namesake Domenico Tempesta, the sostegno del famiglia, was born. Each of the stories Ma told us about Papa reinforced the message that he was the boss, that he ruled the roost, that what he said went. Searching for answers, Dominick turns to the whispers of the dead, to the pages of his grandfather's handwritten memoir, The History of Domenico Onofrio Tempesta, a Great Man from Humble Beginnings. Rendered with touches of magic realism, Domenico's fablelike tale--in which monkeys enchant and religious statues weep--becomes the old man's confession--an unwitting legacy of contrition that reveals the truth's of Domenico's life, Dominick learns that power, wrongly used, defeats the oppressor as well as the oppressed, and now, picking through the humble shards of his deconstructed life, he will search for the courage and love to forgive, to expiate his and his ancestors' transgressions, and finally to rebuild himself beyond the haunted shadow of his twin. Set against the vivid panoply of twentieth-century America and filled with richly drawn, memorable characters, this deeply moving and thoroughly satisfying novel brings to light humanity's deepest needs and fears, our aloneness, our desire for love and acceptance, our struggle to survive at all costs. Joyous, mystical, and exquisitely written, I Know This Much Is True is an extraordinary reading experience that will leave no reader untouched.

I finally finished!! Just about a pick for me. Too much superfluous information and odd story lines popping up all over the place.
A satisfactory ending but sometimes felt like a slog to get there.
What a lot these characters, especially Dominick, had to put up with!

Cinfhen Hahaha! I appreciate your sentiments/ there was alot to get through and Lamb threw a lot at us but I enjoyed the journey even the crazy memoir of his grandfather, Dominick. 1mo
TrishB I think they were my least fave bits tbh. I did think he was going to turn out to be their father too! I was glad he wasn‘t. @Cinfhen 1mo
TrishB I also think given the build up that Thomas‘s death was really quiet and downplayed and it was actually heart breaking. Do you think it was suicide? 1mo
See All 11 Comments
Cinfhen Yes, I think it was and I agree. Dominick fought so hard for Thomas. The way Ray treated Thomas was SO HEARTBREAKING. I literally couldn‘t take those parts because it felt so real. Lamb wrote his characters so authentically. 1mo
Cinfhen I was satisfied with the ending. I was glad Dessa & Dom found their way back together 1mo
TrishB I was glad too, meant I could let my breath out finally @Cinfhen 1mo
TrishB @Cinfhen we got there eventually 😁 1mo
peaknit I really struggle with the family historical parts, that said I‘ve read it a few times and they explain more about their mom every time I read. I find Dominic to be a heartbreaking character, means well but rarely gets it right…the mini series was well done with Mark Ruffalo as the twins. 1mo
TrishB @peaknit he does make a lot of dodgy decisions! I don‘t watch a lot of telly so i probably won‘t get to the series. Though it has a lot of good feedback. 1mo
Cinfhen I definitely want to watch the mini series but I need a mental break for a bit @peaknit that whole bit with the brother and the monkey?!??? Is that in the mini series??? There was a lot going on. The book felt a bit dated though/ did u feel that, Trish?? 1mo
TrishB @Cinfhen yes definitely dated. I think I probably would have loved it more if I‘d have read when it was published? 1mo

Wow! There was a lot to unravel n this 900 page novel. Layers upon layers, going back several generations. Sins, forgiveness, secrets, regrets. A story of identical twins in physical appearances but distinctively different personalities, Nature or Nurture? Does being a twin make you accountable for your other half? Obligated? Responsible? Do you carry parts of each other unknowingly? Lots of heartache but ultimately some redemption too.

DivineDiana 👏🏻📚👏🏻 And I‘m complaining about 600 pages.😂 I had started watching the TV series. Great acting. But decided it was too dark for me to continue. 1mo
DrexEdit I've always been a Wally Lamb fan. I remember reading this heartbreaking chunkster a while back. I've still got to read The Hour I First Believed. I feel a Wally Lamb re-readathon coming on! 😊 1mo
DrexEdit @DivineDiana I didn't know there was a TV series! You had me at Mark Ruffalo. Thank goodness hbomax still puts their stuff out on DVD. I can still get it from the library! 1mo

Cinfhen I‘ve read The Hour We First Believed and She׳s Come Undone @DrexEdit He‘s a great writer!! He captures his characters with some authenticity. 1mo
Cinfhen The book was VERY DARK @DivineDiana but still hopeful somehow. It was quite the journey but I‘m happy I took it. It‘s a GREAT book for discussion 1mo
DivineDiana @DrexEdit Yes! Mark Ruffalo is why I tried to stick with it! 1mo
Cathythoughts Great review! It‘s very long though … I‘d Like to see the tv version 1mo
Centique Look at you reading a chunkster!!! 🙌🙌🙌 1mo

Getting a pedicure because #SelfCare and wrapping up my final 100 pages of this 900 page saga. Identical twins, one schizophrenic the other compensating for all the injustices real or imagined. Really tragic at times but some lighter moments too, because isn‘t that life?!?? It‘s rough but I‘m deeply invested. Hope you find time to power through @TrishB

I‘m really loving this book. Lamb writes so viscerally and beautifully. I‘m taken right back to the late 1970‘s - when Thursday‘s meant the new issue of TV Guide would be waiting in the mailbox. And that euphoria of discovering what lay ahead in the upcoming week. I would read the TV Guide cover to cover, like it was a text book. Life was full of wonder & anticipation pre Internet. Ohhh, and the JOY of those Fall Preview Issues🥰

Cinfhen Have you started yet @TrishB ??? 2mo
Bookboss Oh, my goodness! I need to read this. I LOVED getting the new TV Guide. 2mo
Cinfhen It‘s really a book about mental illness/schizophrenia @Bookboss but the author describes a scene when one brother rips up the new issue of TV Guide in a rage before his twin has a chance to read it. It was written so vividly (edited) 2mo

TrishB Nope! Haven‘t finished the last book yet. Work stress. Meetings all day and brain fog by the end of it. 😞 looking forward to it eventually……. 2mo
Cinfhen Ugh, work stress!! Did they have TV Guide in the UK @TrishB 2mo
TrishB We had the equivalent - I can‘t remember the exact name though! Someone with a better memory than me can shout out. I‘m in a mtg that‘s going on for ever at the moment…..hence being on Litsy. 2mo
Cinfhen Ooops, sorry @TrishB xxx @squirrelbrain @rockpools you might remember…..what was the UK equivalent of TV Guide?? 2mo
rockpools Look at those covers!! We had Radio Times and TV Times (both did telly & radio). I think Radio Times was a BBC thing, so probably a bit more ‘proper!‘ Later on I loved going through them with a felt-tip circling all the must-see programmes (probably Top of the Pops and, um, Top of the Pops!) 2mo
Crazeedi @Cinfhen oh my goodness you just brought back memories for me! TV Guides!! They were the best! Like you I read them cover to cover. And we also got Readers Digests that I devoured, 😀 2mo
Cinfhen My grandparents got Readers Digest @Crazeedi and I remember loving those too!!! 2mo
Cinfhen Top of the Pops!! What night was that on @rockpools ?? In all of my #MusicalMemoirs that program is always mentioned as the pinnacle of their success to perform on Top of the Pops 2mo
Crazeedi @Cinfhen let's just say this Cindy, I read everything I could, we didn't have money to buy books, of course I used the library, but anything print that came in the house was fair game for me! In the summer we had a traveling bookmobile that I borrowed from since the school was closed 2mo
squirrelbrain The Christmas Radio Times was always the most exciting! @rockpools @TrishB @Cinfhen 2mo
rockpools @Cinfhen Thursday nights, 7 o‘clock (ish). Truly iconic British TV. Not always for the right reasons 😬, but I‘m guessing every band of the 70s/80s has a TOTP story to tell. And yes @squirrelbrain - I LOVED the Christmas edition 😁 2mo
Cinfhen So funny, we all had similar experiences despite our age, or continent @rockpools @squirrelbrain @TrishB @Crazeedi that proves what it is to be a reader!!! Everything with print was devoured!!! 😊 2mo
Crazeedi @Cinfhen @rockpools @squirrelbrain @TrishB that's why we are connected here❤❤ 2mo
LeahBergen Those covers! What a blast from my past. 🤣 2mo
Suet624 I think this is the best of Lamb‘s books. I read it when it came out and my twins were babies. It impacted me greatly. 2mo
Cinfhen Hahaha, I KNEW you‘d LOVE these covers @LeahBergen but im having trouble placing the TV shows for the 3 guys. I recognize Eric Estrada - CHIPS and I think one is The Dukes of Hazard guy(?)…. 2mo
Cinfhen I didn‘t know you had twins @Suet624 !!! This book is such a chunkster but it‘s fantastic/ such good writing 2mo
Suet624 Yup, 2 of my 4 kids are twins. 🥰 2mo

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1/2

I almost quit reading this because the first half was going too slow for me. Glad I didn‘t.

The story is about two twin brothers, Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, and the complexity of their relationship as well as the relationships between them and their mother and step-father. Betrayal, devastation, alienation, and forgiveness are major themes in this book and Wally Lamb does a great job tying everything together.

Prairiegirl_reading I read this years ago and it was emotionally exhausting but so well written from what I remember. I lent my copy to someone and they never gave it back. 11mo
Airykah13 @Prairiegirl_reading the second half especially! Have you read anything else by Wally Lamb? 11mo

This is the kind of book where, as you're reading, you're thinking, "How is it possible for someone to actually DO this?" Almost like you just hold the book up over your head, and the words pour in, effortless. This intense novel was easy to slip into and hard to put down. An engrossing page-turner in every respect...just every cliche is true for this one. I don't want to say too much of what it's about because everything is a spoiler. Amazing.

Spent a few hours playing with and sorting my books into authors instead of their loosely organized "classics" and "modern" categories they were in before.
Although this dark brown shelf contains books on the move, like, TBR 2020, TBR sometime in the future, 'Already Read' books and books I'm lending out.

Wow, this book was really something. A literal epic tale of a man‘s life. Wally Lamb did such a good job telling an entire life story from baby to late 40‘s without losing track of a main plot. It‘s so impressive how he can do that! This book was both relieving and devastating. I was so invested in Dominick‘s well-being. There were some pretty shocking revelations (others not so much),

sarahlandis there were times I couldn‘t put it down and there was a long stretch where I was waiting for a particular story line just get over with for goddess sake. But overall, I fell so in love with this book, it was filled with secrets and mysterious, but not a cheesy mystery novel, and although it was quite the task to read a 900 page book (I think the longest book I‘ve ever read?), I‘m so happy I did. 2y

The further I got in the more I thought: “What did you choose there⁉️” because I quickly learned that it‘s no beach read. But I ended up liking it. One of those books you never forget. Even though I don‘t remember the ending … 2y
Ruthiella @Buechersuechtling it‘s maybe a little heavy in terms of subject matter for a beach read. I do remember it was a page turner for me though.😀 2y

I know this much is true,
The last romantics speak
Behind the beautiful forevers, beneath a scarlet sky.
The living shout the history of love.

Took awhile to read it, but definitely worth the time. I felt with and for the characters and rooted for them all.

Curiouser_and_curiouser I bought this novel 20 years ago under the recommendation of a friend, but 3 kids later and it's still sitting on my shelf unread, looking forward to getting stuck into it very soon! 3y

huntersmom1977 @Suet624 I loved it also. The narrative from the brother who has paranoid schizophrenia, really tugged at my heart ☹️ 3y
Suet624 I had young twin boys when I was reading this and all of it tugged at my heart for obvious reasons. 💕💕 (edited) 3y

The story of twins Dominick and Thomas, told from Dominick‘s perspective. Thomas has schizophrenia and Dominick tries to care for him. I read this years ago and it will break your heart, but it‘s so good! 😭😭😭 I still think of these characters years later...

OriginalCyn620 Such a great book! 3y

Cozy sweater and big book today! In the first chapter of this book Thomas goes into the library and commits an act of violence. The rest of the book follows his twin Dominick as he recounts their past and present. A slow and winding (yet rewarding) character study.

Brenda One of my all time favourite books. Enjoy! 🤓 3y
perfectlywinged Everyone who has recommended this to me has said it is one of their favorites and I can see why. The character writing is just so good!! 3y

Mdargusch I have never read this one either. I‘m glad I‘m not the only one. 😁 3y
Coleen Interesting how everyone‘s opinions differ. I loved this one! But didn‘t care for She‘s Come Undone. 3y
emilyhaldi I never got to this one... I think all of he hype drove me away!! 3y
Reggie @RebelReader It‘s been so long since I‘ve read it, but the reason I picked it up was because I loved She‘s Come Undone. I just remember a feeling of dissatisfaction. Which is funny because I can still tell you what happens in She‘s Come Undone and I read that before this one. Weird, huh? 3y
RebelReader @Reggie Not weird at all! I read lots of books and can‘t remember anything about them except whether I liked them or not and others stick with me for whatever reason. 3y
Cinfhen I‘ve read both & enjoyed both! I think he‘s a very talented author. I‘ve read this one too and thought it was pretty good 3y
TrishB @Cinfhen that one you just tagged is currently 99p on kindle....yeah, I may have brought it 😁 3y
Cinfhen Ha!! I don‘t feel bad about that purchase....it‘s almost like free😘 3y
Cinfhen I forgot, it‘s a chunkster!!! You really got your money‘s worth🤪 3y
