The Dark Tower VII
The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower | Stephen King, Michael Whelan
All good things must come to an end, Constant Reader, and not even Stephen King can make a story that goes on forever. The tale of Roland Deschain's relentless quest for the Dark Tower has, the author fears, sorely tried the patience of those who have followed it from its earliest chapters. But attend to it a while longer, if it pleases you, for this volume is the last, and often the last things are best.Roland's ka-tet remains intact, though scattered over wheres and whens. Susannah-Mia has been carried from the Dixie Pig (in the summer of 1999) to a birthing room -- really a chamber of horrors -- in Thunderclap's Fedic; Jake and Father Callahan, with Oy between them, have entered the restaurant on Lex and Sixty-first with weapons drawn, little knowing how numerous and noxious are their foes. Roland and Eddie are with John Cullum in Maine, in 1977, looking for the site on Turtleback Lane where "walk-ins" have been often seen. They want desperately to get back to the others, to Susannah especially, and yet they have come to realize that the world they need to escape is the only one that matters. Thus the book opens, like a door to the uttermost reaches of Stephen King's imagination. You've come this far. Come a little farther. Come all the way. The sound you hear may be the slamming of the door behind you. Welcome to "The Dark Tower."

I only read 40 books this year, but that's okay. Out of all of them the best was The Dark Tower series. Roland's journey broke my heart and it has become a new favorite of mine. Not sure why I waited so long to read it, but glad I finally did!

Kaila-ann I loved this series and have been feeling the need for a re-read. 2mo
vivastory @Kaila-ann I think it's his most technically impressive & ambitious book. I still have about 500 pages left, but I feel fairly confident that by the end it will rank with IT as my favorite. It's definitely one of those books that you could read over & over, there are so many layers to it. It's pretty hard to categorize, & it's such an important book for his mythology, but it definitely requires a commitment. 2mo
Kaila-ann @vivastory I‘ve never read IT 😳. So many of his works tie into the Dark Tower series, it‘s pretty crazy when you realize it. 2mo

I‘m 41% into the final book of The Dark Tower Series, which has taken some quite bizarre turns. My journey to The Dark Tower has finally come to an end. The series is at its best in books 4 and 5. This last installment is good, though there are many new characters introduced as the series comes to an end. Still, it‘s a great series. Overall rating: 4.21 stars

Bitter sweet but satisfying ❤️ I wish had read these books closer together because there is just so many characters and plot points that come back up that I didn‘t get the instant ah ha revelations I maybe should have in some part. This is the first set of books I‘ve read by King and I can‘t wait to read the books mentioned in connection. I loved all the characters and cried at several parts. I hope to reread this series again one day 😊

#EpicKaTet

As we are told several times throughout this series Ka is a wheel so is this book the end or merely a new beginning?

There are a lot of things I liked about this book and others that I personally didn‘t like but that make perfect sense within the confines of the King multiverse.

I am hoping the buddy readers return as I definitely want to chat about this.

I ended up loving this series. I admit the first two books I didn't like very much. I loved the third. The seventh was a good ending to the Tower series. There were quite a few deaths, two of which about did me in. More about those in the comments ⬇️☠⬇️ #epickatet #epickatetread

BookwormAHN Okay so Jake's and Oy's death about killed me, especially Oy's. Could King have made his more horrible. Poor little guy 😿 10mo
KathyWheeler When I first read it, I was so mad with how it ended, but I‘ve since come to see that the non-ending makes sense and could even have been predicted given the whole “ka is a wheel” thing. Then, also, this time around, it looks like Roland‘s story might end differently as he has the Horn of Eld for the first time. 10mo
Karkar I did not like the first two books either the first time. However once I went back and started them the second time they were so much better as you pick up little bits that you miss the first time. 10mo
See All 6 Comments
BookwormAHN @KathyWheeler I wonder if he had paid more attention to the different rooms in the tower that he could have found other things to help his chances of ending it. Although in the first book when he is having his palaver with Walter, he does tell him that they have had this conversation before. So the ending was entirely shocking. 10mo
BookwormAHN @Karkar I plan to eventually do that. I'm sure I've missed s few things. 10mo
KathyWheeler @BookwormAHN He probably could have, but he was so focused on the one goal that he didn‘t pay attention. Oh, if you read them again, the audiobooks are a good way to do it, if you lime audio. (edited) 10mo

I re-read this series to see if the ending would sit better with me, but it didn‘t. The weirdness of King writing himself in, characters just wandering away to never be heard from again, and the final page all didn‘t sit well with me. I get it, but I don‘t like it.

After two years and eight books, I am finally done with this series. There were parts where I got more emotional than expected, and many times when things got so meta or so bonkers that I had to put a book down and go take a walk. I don‘t know that I loved the ending, but a series like this was always going to be about the journey anyway. Long days and pleasant nights.

Libby1 Long days and pleasant nights to you! I‘m glad you enjoyed the journey. I bailed on the series 3/4 of the way through book 5, which was the bravest reading bail I‘ve ever accomplished. I just wasn‘t enjoying it anymore. I absolutely ADORED The Drawing of the Three, but once we got into vampires in Wolves of the Calla I just couldn‘t take it anymore. 12mo

Well- I did it, with about 2 hours to spare. 😉 The Dark Tower series was amazing. Reading the books was a 2 year process for me, which made this final book even more emotional than I expected it to be. As good as book 7 was, it wasn‘t my favorite—that goes to Wolves of the Calla. But I am glad I stepped outside my comfort zone and spent some time with the ka-tet.

Hey guys. Looks like people are starting to finish up Wizard and Glass. Got a couple questions for you all:

1. Would you like to take a break from the series or keep plowing through?
2. Would you like to read them in chronological order or publication order? Mainly asking...would you like to read Wolves of the Calla (Book 5) next or The Wind Through the Keyhole (Book 4.5)
#TheDarkTower #EpicKatetRead

GrilledCheeseSamurai I say keep plowing through & in publication order! I'm down for whatever though. I'm hoping to finish current book on my days off (tomorrow and Monday). ❤️ 1y

Andrew65 I think it makes sense to keep going why we remember the story so far. I‘m happy with going along with whatever others think. There is an argument for both! 😂 I have now finished Wizard and Glass. 1y
Liatrek I‘ve been waiting for the buddyread to hit book five the Wolves of Calla that‘s the next one I need to read. I tried to read them all before the movie came out and failed lol 1y
MinDea @Liatrek I will add you once we hit book 5! Have you read A Wind Through the Keyhole? 1y
BookwormAHN I was wondering if we were going to read A Wind Through the Keyhole. My vote is we go to that next. 1y
TK421 I'm still playing catch up in Wizard and Glass. I'll have more reading time in a few more weeks. I'll probably have binge read what ever we do next. 1y
BookwormM I want to keep going I need to know where we are off to I have caught Roland‘s obsession. I would like to hit Wind next but I will go with the flow 👍😃 1y
Liatrek @MinDea No, I haven‘t read that one but I bought all the books. So, if that‘s the next one you guys read I‘ll start that one 😊 1y
Jovy I think we can go either way! 1y
AnansiGirl 1. Keep plowing through 2. I have both currently checked out through my library. I‘m ok with the majority vote for whichever gets read next. 1y
tonyahoswalt Even though I am behind, I say keep going while it's fresh. I have no preference on which to read next. 1y
Bookishthoughts Wolves of the calla is a good one. I haven't read wind through the key hole yet😎 but whatever we decided is fine with me. 1y
Bookishthoughts I've heard that Wind through the Key hole should be read last. Because that's how the story flows. But I've also heard that you can get away with reading it next. I went with reading last, has anyone read it as the 5th book and finished the series? Does it make a difference? 1y
MinDea @LazyDays when I read it I read it after finishing the original 7 books as I read it when it came out. I enjoyed it in that order. I am lenaing towards publication order but worried that is just my personal preference. I don't know anyone who has read it in chronological order. @TrishB do you have any thoughts here? 1y
MinDea Everything I have been able to find says to read it after Wizard and Glass. http://digg.com/2017/how-to-read-the-dark-tower 1y
TrishB I‘m happy with either and ready to plow on! My first thought was publication order but if it‘s now recommended next that‘s fine with me 👍🏻 1y
EadieB I would say to keep going and read in publication order. I am finishing Wizard and Glass this week. 1y
Bookishthoughts I think publication order is probably the way to go. People can jump in and read anytime.😊 1y
PaperbackPirate I‘m still on The Waste Lands but please keep going and tagging me! 🚂 1y
GrilledCheeseSamurai The thing with reading it chronologically is that Wind In The Keyhole is another side story, which means its another whole book we don't get to travel with the Ka-Tet. After Wizard & Glass I'm pretty eager to continue my quest for the tower with Wolves of the Calla. 1y
MinDea @GrilledCheeseSamurai That's sort of my feeling too. I enjoyed the little break in Wizard and Glass and loved going back to that in Wind through the Keyhole but after I finished the series. 1y

LETTER N: Stephen King's books are connected in a long NARRATIVE. You find Pennywise the clown from IT also makes a cameo in Tommyknockers, The Man in Black who Rolland is chasing in The Dark Tower appears in The Stand, Salem's Lot, Children of the Corn & Dolores Claiborne and Gerlad's Game all happen during the same eclipse.

What are some that you remember?

I wish I could find this in larger print to really see it!

MinDea @tonyahoswalt I think you are right! I read that a looooooong time ago! I am glad you are joining the buddy read. I am really excited to reread it. I think there will be so many things I have forgotten or missed the first time I read it and discussing with all of you guys will make it so much better! 2y

K is for Ka-tet, that group with bonds as strong as family. Roland‘s ka-tet consists of himself, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, and Oy. I can‘t wait to finish this series!

monkeygirlsmama Never read this series, but I love King and it‘s been on my TBR for a few years. I was always turned off by the original covers and so avoided this series like the plague. Then I started to hear so many people raving about it. So, yeah, will be incredibly late to the party, but I‘ll join ya one of these days. LoL 2y
GarthRanzz Definitely a popular choice for today‘s #KingAtoZ! I‘ve not seen this illustration before. Is it from the graphic adaptation? 2y
GarthRanzz @monkeygirlsmama We‘re doing a read along starting next month if you‘re interested. Check these hashtags for the read along. We‘d love for you to join us! #EpicKaTetRead #TheDarkTowerChapterAWeek

monkeygirlsmama Thanks for the invite. I‘m not sure I‘ll be able to join you all this go round, though I‘ll see. 👍 2y
TricksyTails @monkeygirlsmama We‘d love to have you join but if the timing doesn‘t work out, we‘re still reading it in publication order for #LosersClub so feel free to join in for that if you‘re up for it. I don‘t think we start DT until next year for that one. Thank you @GarthRanzz 😘😘😘 2y
monkeygirlsmama @TricksyTails Oh good to know, thanks! 2y
