Wind Through the Keyhole
Wind Through the Keyhole | Stephen King
For those discovering the epic bestselling "Dark Tower" series for the first time and for its legions of dedicatedfans an immensely satisfying stand-alone novel and perfect introduction to the series. In "The Wind Through the Keyhole," Stephen King returns to the rich landscape of Mid-World, the spectacular territory of the Dark Tower fantasy saga that stands as his most beguiling achievement. Roland Deschain and his ka-tet" "Jake, Susannah, Eddie, and Oy, the billy-bumbler encounter a ferocious storm just after crossing the River Whye on their way to the Outer Baronies. As they shelter from the howling gale, Roland tells his friends not just one strange story but two . . . and in so doing, casts new light on his own troubled past. In his early days as a gunslinger, in the guilt-ridden year following his mother s death, Roland is sent by his father to investigate evidence of a murderous shape-shifter, a skin-man preying upon the population around Debaria. Roland takes charge of Bill Streeter, the brave but terrified boy who is the sole surviving witness to the beast s most recent slaughter. Only a teenager himself, Roland calms the boy and prepares him for the following day s trials by reciting a story from the "Magic Tales of the Eld "that his mother often read to him at bedtime. A person s never too old for stories, Roland says to Bill. Man and boy, girl and woman, never too old. We live for them. And indeed, the tale that Roland unfolds, the legend of Tim Stoutheart, is a timeless treasure for all ages, a story that lives for us. King began the Dark Tower series in 1974; it gained momentum in the 1980s; and he brought it to a thrilling conclusion when the last three novels were published in 2003 and 2004. "The Wind Through the Keyhole "is sure to fascinate avid fans of the Dark Tower epic. But this novel also stands on its own for all readers, an enchanting and haunting journey to Roland s world and testimony to the power of Stephen King s storytelling magic."

I have not read the Dark Towers series, and did not need to in order to enjoy this book - I enjoyed the story within a story format - I enjoyed the Skin Man story more than the Wind Through the Keyhole story - but both were good - overall an enjoyable read and a reminder of what a good storyteller King is -

It was nice to catch back up with my favorite ka-tet. To pass the time while stuck in a storm, Roland tells the story of how he and Jamie were sent to deal with a skin-man when he was younger. And then his younger self tells the story of Tim and his journey.
I had the audiobook which King narrates himself. I highly recommend that anytime King narrates one of his own books that you pick that version 💚

King is a master crafter of creating coming of age children who you become deeply invested in. He does this in nearly every book I‘ve read of his, and it marvels me that an adult can so vividly remember and perfectly capture the feelings and emotions that are felt as a child.

This story within a story within a story was fast paced and compelling. I am in no rush to get to the Dark Tower, I am enjoying the journey far too much!

🎧 I feel 4.5 is the perfect place for this book. It could be a stand alone but reading the first 4 books will give you enough background of the world, language, characters to enjoy this story within a story that Roland tells his ka-tet as they wait out a storm after the tragedy at the end of book 4.

I have no idea why so many people have a problem with the author narrating. I enjoyed Mr King reading me a good bedtime story.

Once upon a bye, before your Grandfather's Grandfather was born, Roland, Susannah, Eddie, Jake and Oy got stuck in a starkblast. When they found a safe place to settle for the night Roland told his ka-tet some fireside stories.

I didnt care much for this story within a story, perhaps it becomes relevant further along in the series but I wasn't feeling it.

Am looking forward to getting back on track with the main plot in the next book.

Cortg I'm hoping to finish the 4th book, Wizard and Glass, this weekned. I don't love the series, but each book I like more and more and I feel invested at this point. Should I read this one after the 4th book? Peeking around online it looks like maybe I should? 2y
vivastory @Cortg Although he wrote this one after book 7 was finished, I know that King wants people to read it after W&G, but I went onto book 5 & am saving this one for a future read (edited) 2y
KathyWheeler @Cortg I have read this book out of order every time I‘ve read the Dark Tower. Nothing in it has any bearing on what happens in the series. 2y
Cortg @vivastory @KathyWheeler Thanks! I‘m still fairly new to SK! #BlameItOnLitsy 2y
Michellesibs @Cortg I read it after book four but as others have said it really doesn't seem to make much difference to anything. Like you with each book I enjoy it slightly more but so far I prefer his other works than this particular series. Happy reading! 2y

Although this book is part of the Dark Tower series, it adds nothing essential to the journey, and our heroes aren‘t in it much at all. They have to seek shelter during terrible weather, and Roland tells them stories while they wait for the weather to pass. I really like it, in spite of that. I was able to get in a short walk before the rain and listened to more of The Green Mile. #audiowalk

We are finishing up the Dark Tower series with this later addition. Technically, in terms of the story, it takes place between books 4 & 5, but since our heroes aren‘t much in it and it was published after the last book, it doesn‘t matter if it‘s read out of order. Went to the beach today but too many people, so we came back. I walked in a park across the bay and listened to more of The Green Mile. #audiowalk

Come-read-with-me What a beautiful place to walk! I‘d get lost in the scenery! 2y
KathyWheeler @Come-read-with-me It really is a lovely park. On the other side of the road, there‘s an antique rose trail; that was part of my walk too, but the roses aren‘t blooming yet. I imagine it‘s lovely when they are. 2y

My second read through the #darktower series as I go through #expandeddt journey. I didn‘t read this the first time I read the series. There were a few fun little tidbits and the story was alright, but I guess I was hoping for a little more to the overall plot. This could be read as a little (certainly a short novel by SK standards!) stand alone story, but when reading the series you just want a little more.

I love The Dark Tower series (impossible to make into a single movie). Amazing characters, adventures and layers of intricately woven stories and lore. So, another small dose of my favourite characters was long awaited and happily received. A story - in a story - in a story- it can be read alone or as part of the magnificent series. Stephen King - many thanks from a Constant Reader.

This can be read alone or as part of the dark tower series although it doesn‘t really add to that story.

“Stories take a person away. If it‘s a good one, that is.”

This is a story within a story set inside the Dark Tower universe but luckily it was pretty standalone since it‘s been so long since I read that series.

I liked the story and really liked the story within the story. Glad I finally got around to reading this one.

PenguinInFlight I loved this book SO MUCH! I really tried to love The Dark Tower series, and I‘m going to try it again some day, but I had a hard time with it. I was also buddy reading it and everyone had read it before and it was hard for me too keep up with all the subtle things they picked up. This book, though, I thought was absolute perfection. 😍🙌🏻 5y
Bookish_AF @PenguinInFlight I remember liking the series but oh man I read it SO LONG ago. Like high school long ago (so....15 years???). I‘m a huge Stephen King fan but I have many novels I prefer over the Dark Tower. I vaguely remember Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla being my favorites in the series. I had just picked up The Wind Through the Keyhole from my shelf and was ashamed I hadn‘t read it yet!! 5y
PenguinInFlight @nestlera I‘m a huge King fan, so it made me a bit sad I didn‘t love them more. I thought for sure I was going to jump on the bandwagon. I‘m going to try again, maybe this summer, and see if I enjoy them more. I did love Wizard and Glass - that one stood out for sure. 5y

Roland and the ka-tet have escaped an Oz-like city only to be hit with a wild storm. As they wait out the storm, Roland tells them a story of his youth and in it is a story from his childhood. He and Jamie go to investigate killings by a skin-man(a shape shifter) in an outlying town. As they track him, Roland helps a survivor, a boy a few years younger than he is. He tells him a tale of the origin of Tim Stoutheart, a famous gunslinger.
