In a summer town, the powers of three women are lying dormant. A fiery redhead will soon channel her anger through flames. A compassionate mother will talk to children long gone from this world. And tucked away in the recesses of a wild backyard lives a local witch awaiting their reunion. I absolutely loved this book. There are so many excellent passages: on misogyny, societal hierarchies, and the chaos of the natural world. Full review on GR!

HEX | Thomas Olde Heuvelt
post image

Thomas Olde Heuvelt is a new auto-buy for me. Just when you think things will get resolved, something else thickens the plot. And then another spin, and then another, and then… I continued this pattern for 250 pages, through two meals, and then suddenly.. it was over.

Hex is the kind of gruesome accident you can‘t help but compulsively watch. It‘s the human race at its ugliest. It‘s squirmy and horrifying and spooky and I simply loved it.

aa_guer2021 What a wonderfully written review! I felt exactly the same when I read this!! 🤐😳🙃 1mo

I‘m shook. I was expecting a vintage domestic thriller and got a very disturbing coming-of-age slow burner that I won‘t be quick to forget. Damn… that was dark.

What I can appreciate from this book is this: the very real issues of the teenage world of yesteryear are just as relevant today. A psychological caging of your hormonally-charged mind, where all of your childhood nightmares are on steroids.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I read this many years ago and felt the same way… awesome photo 📷 1mo
daisyheadmaesie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Glad to know I‘m not alone!! Do you think you‘ll reread it? 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @daisyheadmaesie probably not. I have sooo many to read! I read most of hers when I was younger! You are definitely not alone! I was so creeped out! Have you seen the adaptation? 1mo
daisyheadmaesie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks that‘s totally fair. I know that feeling! 😂😂 I haven‘t seen the adaptation! I actually had no idea this author existed. I grew up with Goosebumps instead of VC Andrews, so it‘s a lovely discovery :) 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @daisyheadmaesie I loved these books! I‘m a bit older than you although I think I‘m still 20!! 😂😂😂 4w

Zora loves the new couch! She and I spent all weekend snuggled up in our corners, napping and finishing The Replacement Wife. It was an entertaining read, though the ending wasn‘t as satisfying as the build up. It was a page-turner nonetheless, and fans of The Woman in the Window will most likely get through this one quickly.

Thanks for @HarperCollins for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Last Girl Ghosted | Lisa Unger
post image

This is a modern day thriller for fans of You. If you like slow burners, you might find this one appealing! But personally, I feel the disappointment of this book down to my solar plexus; I think that may be Unger‘s favourite body part. I found it nearly ten times in the book— still don‘t know what or where it is, though.

Thanks to @HarperCollins for gifting me this free ARC in exchange for an honest review. Full review is up on GoodReads!

Arctic Fury is hands down the kind of female-led book you want to kick down new year‘s winter doors with! Witty comebacks, gruelling conditions, and a wonderful cast of characters. Full review is on my GoodReads!

What a great read for chilly weather! This may be the strongest debut novel I‘ve laid my hands on. Blackåsen is a small, remote village hiding some big, filthy skeletons that you‘re most definitely going to want to dig up. My whole review is up on GoodReads if you‘re interested! :)

I‘ve never reread a book, except for the Harry Potter series. I plan on reading it for a third time next year :)

1) My name is Mae, and one of my absolute favourite books as a kid was Dr. Seuss‘s Daisy-Head Mayzie. It‘s my username on all my bookish accounts (minus IG).

2) I‘m really thankful for my family‘s love and resilience in times of struggle. We lost our aunt today, and to see us hold each other up through loss is something I cherish.

LazyOwl Sorry for your loss 💕 2y

This book is NOTHING like I thought it would be... It‘s the kind of horrifying and disturbing you can‘t look away from. I‘m a third of the way through now and I love that I have NO idea what is going to happen.

Did any of you read this? What were your thoughts?

readordierachel I LOVED this one. Sucked me in and didn't let go 👍🏼 2y
daisyheadmaesie @readordierachel Glad to hear I'm not the only one! 2y
Reggie I really like Tremblay‘s writing. Like when he writes that Wen has her feet in the shape of a scythe and is using them to bring up grasshoppers from the yard. And then he proceeded to rip my insides out. I loved this book. Hope you like it too! 2y

The Gentleman Thief | Kate Gragg

This might be the most underrated book of 2020! A truly brilliant and hilarious fairytale.

A charismatic chimneysweep thief, living in a magical world, finds himself on the heist of his life. Picture.. Hunger Games meets Monty Python.

You now have no idea what awaits you. So just get yourself a copy now, before I slip up and give something away!

I made my bingo board thanks to @TheAromaofBooks and here are my reads for November (+ tagged book)! This would give me one bingo row.

I‘m hoping I‘ll be able to squeeze in another one, though.. The Likeness has been whispering to me from the corner of my bookshelf— in a non-creepy, very enticing sort of way.

Have you read any of these? :)

suvata I read the top two and I really enjoyed both of them, especially Daisy Jones. 2y

Participating in my first ever #bookspin / #doublespin / #bookbingo, hosted by @TheAromaofBooks !

Here are my 20! Technically there are a few ARCs in here I have to read regardless— including the book I tagged— but I‘m hoping these games will help me get excited about getting through my overflowing shelves. :)

I wanna know: What‘s one book that has been sitting on your shelf the longest? #tbrpossibility #bookban

MsMelissa I‘ve had The Far Pavillions by M.M. Kaye sitting on my TBR since 1999. I‘ve moved three times since buying it, and the book has moved with me, but I still have yet to read it 😬 2y
MsMelissa PS - You have some great books on your bingo card! 2y

HufflepuffGirl90 Those look amazing!!! 2y
daisyheadmaesie @HufflepuffGirl90 I hope they will be! I‘m so far behind on the bestsellers and the hyped up books. Maybe this month I‘ll be able to get through a few more. :) 2y
thrillerswithgems @daisyheadmaesie yes! Let‘s do it 🤗 2y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Glad to have you along!! I still have unread books on my shelf that I picked up at library discard sales back in the 90s, so there's that 😂 2y
daisyheadmaesie @TheAromaofBooks Hahaha I feel this is a trend, leftover 90s books 😂 2y
Scochrane26 I still have at least one Maeve Binchy book that‘s been sitting since about 2003-04. 2y

I am just loving these games 🖤

1) We didn‘t get a single kid last year.. So we‘re not expecting any again. Usually we still decorate, have spooky music playing, but the weather has been weird so we haven‘t even done that! Somebody hit the cancel button on 2020 already. 😫

2) I do on my phone. I‘m using the new iOS 14 update and remade my whole screen in a Halloween theme. 🖤🎃

I read this book ages ago, and I still think about it from time to time. Enthusiasm was all Chanel had in the beginning; surrounded by hunger and poverty. From nothing she rose to become a household name, a societal upgrade that taught her many things about the truth behind fame and riches. If you‘re remotely interested in fashion or the WWII era, I highly recommend!

Winter Counts: A Novel | David Heska Wanbli Weiden

I was fully immersed in the goings-on of the Rosebud Res, and wasn‘t ready to leave. Wanbli‘s writing had me fear the worst, while still rooting for redemption.

It‘s a story about inner conflict, corruption, addiction, systemic racism, and the strength it takes to heal yourself and your loved ones amidst brokenness. I was enamoured with the characters, especially hippie Tommy + his weird stories 😂 Really hope this becomes a series.

GardenJess I‘m hoping the same! 2y

#TGIF all 🙌🏻🎉 #funfriYAY challenge!

Aside from the classic Luna Lovegood 💛💚💖 I‘ve recently become obsessed with the badass thief Lila Bard from VE Schwab‘s Darker Shade of Magic series. That girl can hold 👏🏻 her 👏🏻 own. I love how non-archtype she feels. It‘s so refreshing.

I challenge those I tagged and anyone else to share the post! Who is YOUR all-time fave character?

HappilyEverKrafter I‘ve never heard of this series, but I‘m going to check it out. Thank you! 😊 2y
thrillerswithgems This is like asking “what‘s your favorite book?” It‘s so hard to pin point just one...but let me see, Brida from Brida from Paulo Coelho. It‘s not a thriller rather very poetic book. 2y
daisyheadmaesie @HappilyEverKrafter It‘s a great read! Somewhere between YA and adult fantasy. Rich universe, cool magic system. 2y

#throwback to a few months ago, when my front lawn was my haven and the sun was my God. 😭 💔 I had a killer year for books so far, including this one that I read at the end of the summer! An incredible blend of scientific and gothic thrills. This book had my favourite trope: a massive spooky mansion in an isolated village. Do you have a story trope you never tire of?

#thrillers #fivestars

LiteraryinLawrence I think mine is similar: locked room mysteries like Agatha Christie! When you know it has to be one of these like 5 people, but you don‘t know who! 2y
daisyheadmaesie @LiteraryinLititz Omigosh yeesssss!!! Locked room whodunnits are the best! 2y
LeahBergen That would be a favourite trope of mine, too. I also have a thing for country house murders. 😆 2y

CURRENTLY READING 📖 This is my first ever full-length novel on an eReader. Squeee! 👏🏻 So far I‘m quite attached to the characters. Are you an eBook or a paperback kind of reader?

BookDragonNotWorm I still love the smell of paper books but I only read e-books now so I can read in the dark, highlight passages without defacing a page, bring 100 books with me in the palm of my hand....😂 2y
daisyheadmaesie @BookDragonNotWorm It is SO EASY, right?! But yes, there is nothing quite like the smell and feel of paper. But portability, I mean, wow. I‘m amazed at how light and simple my eReader is! 2y
Smarkies Paperback for me as I love the feel of an actual book. 📖 2y

daisyheadmaesie @Smarkies I'm with you on that! :) 2y
LeahBergen Paper books all the way for me! 😆😆 2y
daisyheadmaesie @LeahBergen Haha it isn‘t surprising that physical books are winning this debate 😂 2y
Texreader Both! I generally have one IRL (in real life) book, one ebook, and one audiobook going at the same time. 2y
daisyheadmaesie @Texreader That‘s impressive! Do you have specific genres you read in each format? Or do you go about it less methodically? 2y
Texreader This year I‘ve been very methodical because I I‘m doing so many challenges and readathons on Litsy. It‘s a blast! My fave go-to genre is historical fiction. So I go with that generally for all formats but these challenges really force you to read new genres, which mostly can be fun but sometimes really really bad when you find a style or author you really don‘t like. 2y
daisyheadmaesie @Texreader What a great way to step out of your comfort zone! Do you have any Litsy challenges to recommend? Something I could start for next month, maybe? Dunno how soon they bring the challenges out for the upcoming month. 🤔🤔 2y
Smarkies @daisyheadmaesie I don't do many challenges on litsy but this year I am doing the #Booked2020 one which is a whole lot of fun because it is making me read out of my wheelhouse. I also am doing the #nonfiction2020 one. I think alot of people are taking part in the screamathon one now. Just keep an eye out for hashtags. Something always comes up. 😂😂 2y
daisyheadmaesie @Smarkies Ohh I will check those out! I have so many nonfictions that need reading, maybe I‘ll dedicate Dec to those! :) 2y
Smarkies @daisyheadmaesie there also may be a nonfiction November challenge coming up.... There was one last year that was quite fun. 2y
Smarkies @daisyheadmaesie check out the hashtag #nfn2020 for this year's one. 2y
daisyheadmaesie @Smarkies Wicked! Thanks! 2y
LiteraryinLawrence I got my first ereader earlier in the pandemic. It was when the library was still physically closed but you could borrow ebooks, and the Kindle was SO great because I had access to library books again. Now that our library is open to borrow physical books again, I‘d prefer to read a paperback, but I still read ebooks too. 2y
daisyheadmaesie @LiteraryinLititz I feel like many people converted due to the pandemic. No more book shopping, no more sharing stuff, everything at your fingertips. :) 2y

Absolutely devoured this book! A sister‘s love; there‘s nothing fiercer. You know the saying, I‘d help you hide the body.. Would you really do it to protect her?

Korede‘s younger sister Ayoola has got it all, adored by all who cross her path. Her biggest flaw is.. well, she‘s a serial killer. And how Korede deals with it will stay with you for a long time. I loved the pace! The setting was realistic, the characters were dysfunctional perfection.
