The Change: A Novel | Kirsten Miller

Pickpick

In a summer town, the powers of three women are lying dormant. A fiery redhead will soon channel her anger through flames. A compassionate mother will talk to children long gone from this world. And tucked away in the recesses of a wild backyard lives a local witch awaiting their reunion. I absolutely loved this book. There are so many excellent passages: on misogyny, societal hierarchies, and the chaos of the natural world. Full review on GR!

HEX | Thomas Olde Heuvelt

Pickpick

Thomas Olde Heuvelt is a new auto-buy for me. Just when you think things will get resolved, something else thickens the plot. And then another spin, and then another, and then… I continued this pattern for 250 pages, through two meals, and then suddenly.. it was over.

Hex is the kind of gruesome accident you can‘t help but compulsively watch. It‘s the human race at its ugliest. It‘s squirmy and horrifying and spooky and I simply loved it.

I‘m shook. I was expecting a vintage domestic thriller and got a very disturbing coming-of-age slow burner that I won‘t be quick to forget. Damn… that was dark.

What I can appreciate from this book is this: the very real issues of the teenage world of yesteryear are just as relevant today. A psychological caging of your hormonally-charged mind, where all of your childhood nightmares are on steroids.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I read this many years ago and felt the same way… awesome photo 📷 1mo
daisyheadmaesie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Glad to know I‘m not alone!! Do you think you‘ll reread it? 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @daisyheadmaesie probably not. I have sooo many to read! I read most of hers when I was younger! You are definitely not alone! I was so creeped out! Have you seen the adaptation? 1mo
daisyheadmaesie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks that‘s totally fair. I know that feeling! 😂😂 I haven‘t seen the adaptation! I actually had no idea this author existed. I grew up with Goosebumps instead of VC Andrews, so it‘s a lovely discovery :) 1mo

Zora loves the new couch! She and I spent all weekend snuggled up in our corners, napping and finishing The Replacement Wife. It was an entertaining read, though the ending wasn‘t as satisfying as the build up. It was a page-turner nonetheless, and fans of The Woman in the Window will most likely get through this one quickly.

Thanks for @HarperCollins for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This is a modern day thriller for fans of You. If you like slow burners, you might find this one appealing! But personally, I feel the disappointment of this book down to my solar plexus; I think that may be Unger‘s favourite body part. I found it nearly ten times in the book— still don‘t know what or where it is, though.

I‘ve never reread a book, except for the Harry Potter series. I plan on reading it for a third time next year :)

1) My name is Mae, and one of my absolute favourite books as a kid was Dr. Seuss‘s Daisy-Head Mayzie. It‘s my username on all my bookish accounts (minus IG).

I read this book ages ago, and I still think about it from time to time. Enthusiasm was all Chanel had in the beginning; surrounded by hunger and poverty. From nothing she rose to become a household name, a societal upgrade that taught her many things about the truth behind fame and riches. If you‘re remotely interested in fashion or the WWII era, I highly recommend!

I was fully immersed in the goings-on of the Rosebud Res, and wasn‘t ready to leave. Wanbli‘s writing had me fear the worst, while still rooting for redemption.

It‘s a story about inner conflict, corruption, addiction, systemic racism, and the strength it takes to heal yourself and your loved ones amidst brokenness. I was enamoured with the characters, especially hippie Tommy + his weird stories 😂 Really hope this becomes a series.

#throwback to a few months ago, when my front lawn was my haven and the sun was my God. 😭 💔 I had a killer year for books so far, including this one that I read at the end of the summer! An incredible blend of scientific and gothic thrills. This book had my favourite trope: a massive spooky mansion in an isolated village. Do you have a story trope you never tire of?

#thrillers #fivestars

CURRENTLY READING 📖 This is my first ever full-length novel on an eReader. Squeee! 👏🏻 So far I‘m quite attached to the characters. Are you an eBook or a paperback kind of reader?

daisyheadmaesie @LeahBergen Haha it isn‘t surprising that physical books are winning this debate 😂 2y
Texreader Both! I generally have one IRL (in real life) book, one ebook, and one audiobook going at the same time. 2y
daisyheadmaesie @Texreader That‘s impressive! Do you have specific genres you read in each format? Or do you go about it less methodically? 2y
Texreader This year I‘ve been very methodical because I I‘m doing so many challenges and readathons on Litsy. It‘s a blast! My fave go-to genre is historical fiction. So I go with that generally for all formats but these challenges really force you to read new genres, which mostly can be fun but sometimes really really bad when you find a style or author you really don‘t like. 2y
daisyheadmaesie @Texreader What a great way to step out of your comfort zone! Do you have any Litsy challenges to recommend? Something I could start for next month, maybe? Dunno how soon they bring the challenges out for the upcoming month. 🤔🤔 2y
Smarkies @daisyheadmaesie I don't do many challenges on litsy but this year I am doing the #Booked2020 one which is a whole lot of fun because it is making me read out of my wheelhouse. I also am doing the #nonfiction2020 one. I think alot of people are taking part in the screamathon one now. Just keep an eye out for hashtags. Something always comes up. 😂😂 2y
daisyheadmaesie @Smarkies Ohh I will check those out! I have so many nonfictions that need reading, maybe I‘ll dedicate Dec to those! :) 2y
Smarkies @daisyheadmaesie there also may be a nonfiction November challenge coming up.... There was one last year that was quite fun. 2y
Smarkies @daisyheadmaesie check out the hashtag #nfn2020 for this year's one. 2y
daisyheadmaesie @Smarkies Wicked! Thanks! 2y
LiteraryinLawrence I got my first ereader earlier in the pandemic. It was when the library was still physically closed but you could borrow ebooks, and the Kindle was SO great because I had access to library books again. Now that our library is open to borrow physical books again, I‘d prefer to read a paperback, but I still read ebooks too. 2y

Absolutely devoured this book! A sister‘s love; there‘s nothing fiercer. You know the saying, I‘d help you hide the body.. Would you really do it to protect her?

Korede‘s younger sister Ayoola has got it all, adored by all who cross her path. Her biggest flaw is.. well, she‘s a serial killer. And how Korede deals with it will stay with you for a long time. I loved the pace! The setting was realistic, the characters were dysfunctional perfection.
