Hmmm I think this one starts off slow and I saw the ending coming but I did start to enjoy the stories as I got to the more juicy parts.

Tonight's book club was a success! We had a small group and I got nervous when conversation lulled a little, but, overall, I think it went well!

If you haven't read The Husband's Secret, I HIGHLY recommend it!

A woman finds an envelope, written in her husband‘s hand, and it says (*ominous music*): “For my wife, only to be opened in the event of my death”. But her husband is still very much alive, and he won‘t tell her what‘s inside. That's one heck of a premise! Moriarty's breakthrough novel wasn't without its problems, but still jaw-dropping in twists. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-husbands-secret-liane-moriarty/ #Australian

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed the inclusion of three different perspectives but I felt this book was a bit long. A couple things I found slightly unbelievable and at times I thought: why was that included? I think the author tried to dig into too many characters and it left some feeling flat. I hate to compare to Big Little Lies but this book just didn‘t give me the “I can‘t stop reading” feeling. Thankfully it‘s enjoyable enough and easy to read.

My Library is kicking off a new Book Club next week & this gal gets to facilitate. Even though I'm terrified no one will show up, I'm super excited to have the opportunity to run this group. Our first book is one I love : The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty.

SamanthaMarie That is exciting!! I so hope you have a good turn out. I run a book Club too and definitely turn out (at least of those who have actually read the book) is low but every now and then a book discussion is fabulous and I keep on pressing on!! :) 2w
Book_Fairy_Mary @SamanthaMarie thank you! I really don't know what to expect, but I'm trying to stay positive! I'm terribly nervous about starting the discussion, even though I was an English teacher for 10 years. 🤣 I guess it's just different with adults/peers. 2w
Scochrane26 I started going to my library‘s book club in the winter & really like it. I‘m the youngest one there. My library also has another club they do where they recommend books according to a theme that month, & we talk about what we‘re reading. They do a podcast about the recommended books. 2w
Book_Fairy_Mary @Scochrane26 I love the idea of doing a podcast! That would be so fun! Do you feel like everyone has an opportunity to freely discuss the book at your book club or do some members dominate the discussion? 2w
Scochrane26 @Book_Fairy_Mary we all have a chance to discuss the book. The librarian sometimes has a list of discussion questions, but we tend to hit on the important stuff without the questions. This is my first book club. I‘m sure you‘ll do great. 2w

Reading this for book club. I‘m about 40% through this book and I‘m enjoying it so far - but I‘m not sure it‘ll be better than Big Little Lies for me.. I also think the blurb on the back may have done it a disservice because it‘s about so much more than that. (Note: I‘m a black coffee drinker but my sister got me hooked on Starbucks pumpkin spice latte creamer and it‘s delicious 😋)

michellelav I'm also a black coffee drinker! Maybe I'll try that out 😊 2w

Another book I read several months ago (I've been so busy lately and didn't have time to post anything on Litsy until now. ?)

Anyway, about the book, this is the second Liane Moriarty's book I've read after "Big Little Lies." I actually love both of them and really love the writing style of Liane Moriarty in general. This quote, for instance, will definitely be one of the book quotes I always remember.

This was my first Liane Moriarty. I enjoyed the divine justice but the overwhelming Catholicism turned me off. The story focuses on Cecilia Fitzpatrick who has an organized well-off life and whose world crashes when she comes across her husband‘s secret. Consequently, there are some interesting power dynamics that come to the surface. There‘s also another story line of Tess, whose son goes to the same school as Cecilia‘s daughters.

Megabooks Much less religion. 1mo
NeedsMoreBooks @Megabooks yes, definite less religion in Big Little Lies. Will read The Hypnotist‘s Love Story and just completed 1mo

Nothing beats a reading slump like a Liane Moriarty book.
While this book wasn‘t one of the best books I‘ve ever read, it was fun and fast-paced, I ended up reading it in one day.

Gosh can Moriarty weave a story! If you like characters dovetailing where all the possible questions are answered, her books are for you. Well written women‘s fiction.

I said my piece last night on the fat shaming. If that‘s a deal breaker, don‘t read this. It wore on me, but ultimately didn‘t ruin the book. 3.5⭐️

Minor spoiler in the comments if you‘re interested in medicine/genetics.

Megabooks So they talked about one of the characters having Marfan syndrome, which is a rare genetic disease than can cause heart and major vessel problems among other things. My uncle has it and we had chased it back to the Yadkin River Valley in North Carolina. I am curious about how and where it is in Australia? 🤔🤔 4mo
Freespirit As a critical care nurse here in Aus I have seen it , but it is reasonably rare. We have a rate of 1:3,900 persons. Not sure how that compares to other countries. Sounds like another best seller! 4mo
Megabooks @Freespirit Wow! It‘s only 2-3/10,000 in America. My father‘s brother has a confirmed case without cardiac complications. One of my mother‘s cousins had a suspected case but was never tested. So it‘s kind of weird that it could be on both sides of my family. (edited) 4mo

I love some of Liane Moriarty‘s books, but I am so sick of her fat shaming!!

In this one, Will couldn‘t see his wife‘s cousin as a sexually interesting person until she lost 40 kg (88 lbs), but suddenly she‘s skinny and bam 💥 he wants to f*** her!

And also, Moriarty seems to equate being organized & involved in life with being thin.

Fat people can be attractive, put together, stylish, organized, etc. just like thin people. /rantover

KatieDid927 Oh crap, I haven‘t read her yet but I have a couple on her shelf and this sounds like it‘ll be a major problem for me. 4mo
kgriffith Yeah that‘d be a HARD pass for me 4mo
Megabooks @KatieDid927 This is a second read, and I had forgotten about how crucial that bit of info is in the Tess/Will/Felicity storyline. It‘s no better or worse than other women‘s fiction in this niche (beachy/light mystery fic), which is part of the reason I read less of it. 4mo
See All 18 Comments
CoverToCoverGirl That was a GOOD rant! 👏👏♥️ 4mo
Megabooks @kgriffith see above. I‘m over 350 pages in, so I‘ll finish, but it‘s really making it less enjoyable. 4mo
Megabooks @CoverToCoverGirl Thank you! 💜💜 I needed to get it out! 4mo
kgriffith @Megabooks oh yeah, that definitely wasn‘t a judgment, I should have said thank you for the heads up is all. We all deal with content differently based on our own histories and processes, and I absolutely respect that someone else will read and rant rather than avoid! 4mo
rjsthumbelina 🙌 preach it! I get so sick of that bullshit! I think I will pass on her books knowing this about the author. I can't support authors/show writers that use weight as a major plot point. Bc honestly, most of us moderately fat people (which are almost always the way these types of characters are described) have way too much life to live to worry about a few extra lbs & the people who love us agree! 4mo
Megabooks @kgriffith I didn‘t feel judged. If anything, I was trying to justify finishing to myself! Oh dear! Anyway, I think that‘s why Litsy is so great because you can call an author out on it, and then save a friend from wasting time on a book she wouldn‘t like. Win/win! 4mo
Megabooks @rjsthumbelina I‘m glad I‘ve libraried most of her books. Her style of writing is fun and easy to read, but I don‘t need another woman (besides my mom 🙄🙄) trying to fat shame me. I‘m right about the same amount as overweight as the character, and I think I‘m pretty! 4mo
kgriffith @Megabooks absolutely! 4mo
Slajaunie Agree! 4mo
saresmoore Ewwww 4mo
Cailey_Mac Ugh I HATE that too! 4mo
Megabooks Yes, I was disappointed with how many times she called this character fat or obese. And the adjective willowy was used a lot with thin characters. I hate that word. 😒 @Slajaunie @saresmoore @Cailey_Mac 4mo
GypsyKat I always think it‘s interesting how people can read the same book and get different things from it. It never occurred to me that it was fat shaming. I just felt like it was character descriptions. Some people are fat (myself included, and I‘m not using the word fat as an insult, just a fact) and some people are thin. If anything, I felt like the main character had issues about weight since she focused on it so much with the other woman. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
Megabooks @GypsyKat I think what got to me with this particular book is how Tess, with every thought of Felicity before she lost weight, thought that Felicity couldn‘t possibly attract a man. And Felicity herself thought she couldn‘t attract a man 90 lbs heavier. Plenty of men are happy to date women at any weight. Plenty of men prefer larger women. Women can be attractive at any size, get married if they choose, etc. 4mo
GypsyKat @Megabooks Oh I definitely agree with you on the last part. I just didn‘t see it as fat shaming because I felt like it was a character issue. Like Felicity didn‘t have confidence as a heavier woman. But that‘s just my opinion. I‘m not saying that anyone who saw it as fat shaming was wrong. Im just saying that I didn‘t see it that way. I've read 'Big little lies' by Liane Moriarty and loved it. I expected so much out of this book. The best thing about the book was the 'Epilogue'. It is the only part which increased the book's rating. I loved how the epilogue was framed, the whole book was pretty bland compared to the epilogue. Too stretchy with nothing amazing. I even expected the end pretty soon. Give it a try for the writer and the epilogue.

I struggled to get into this book on audio. It's possible I was just too distracted and couldn't give it a fair chance, but it wasn't until about halfway through I started getting interested when we finally found out the husband's secret. Before that it seemed like a lot of pointless, mundane information. Overall, I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. The epilogue annoyed me though.

Kaila-ann I‘m having the same issue with the audio version - too much going on and I can‘t seem to focus. I think I‘ll give the physical book a chance down the road. 4mo

My last read of 2018 and my first Liane Moriarty book! I enjoyed it! I didn't see the twists, specifically the connections between the three main characters, coming. Happy Tuesday, friends! I'm taking a mental health day today. My boss at my new job was a hard ass during the interviews, but I thought he was just trying to weed people out. Turns out he only got worse, and he insults me on a personal level daily. I hate that I'm sensitive toward it, but I am.

Took a “blink and you‘ll miss it” trip to Dallas for work and read this on the way there.

Liane Moriarty is the perfect plane author for me. All of the suburban melodrama and playground politics takes my mind off of things.

I quite enjoyed this. 4⭐️

eanderson I have a few of her books that I still need to read. Maybe it it‘s time to put them higher on my TBR? 11mo
MicheleinPhilly @eanderson I‘ve read 3 or 4 starting with Big Little Lies. There is a depth to her stories (at least the ones I‘ve read) that took me by surprise. 11mo

This would be a three star book for me but I love the way she inserted what would have happened to the characters if different choices were made. I‘m a sucker for the whole ‘sliding door‘ trope so it‘s a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ star read for me.

This is my second book by this author and I am really enjoying her writing style. She has such a way of telling a story riddled with humor and wonder. Just when you think you have it figured out she throws in another curve ball that keeps you guessing.

Full of secrets, guilt, betrayal, consequence and grief, this story draws you in from the start and grips you so you don‘t want to put it down.

I just finished reading this and wish I hadn't taken it with me to lunch. Now I'm in public and can't properly vent my anger at the way this book ended. Liane and I are going to have to break up. I loved big little lies but have not had much success since then. On the plus side I guess I did really enjoy the first half.

suvata Oh-oh! 12mo
MoBee I liked this one and was glad how it ended because it wasn‘t predictable and still realistic. She did a great job showing her life can be so unpredictable 12mo
danibolahood @MoBee I can totally appreciate what the author was going for at the end and in another life I may have loved it. Unfortunately, this one just pushed all my buttons in exactly the wrong way :). Thank you for your response though I love how different people can have totally different responses to the same book! 12mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Oh I liked this one. I like a good shocker. But I guess it's not for everyone. 🤷‍♀️ 12mo
ferskner She is totally hit or miss for me too. I didn't like this one at all. 12mo

It's Saturday!!! I was planning to spend my whole weekend reading and couldn't wait to pick this book back up. Then last night I hit the half way point and it's started to lose it's magic - I'm finding it dragging. I've been up for an hour and a half and I have yet to actually pick up the book.

RadicalReader @danibolahood be sure to check out this truly captivating read by John Marrs catapult chapters that compel to continue reading with such a gripping plot it is a must!! 9mo

Friday night and I‘m starting a new book! I was at a bookstore earlier when I saw this book and remembered that I had it on my shelf at home. My mother-in-law gave it to me a few years ago because she enjoyed it so much. Seeing it tonight reminded me that I could probably not buy a book for the next year and not run out of Books to read at home 😂📚📖🤓
