The Mystery of Henri Pick
The Mystery of Henri Pick | David Foenkinos
20 posts | 7 read | 17 to read
The delightful first title in a new collaboration with Channel 4's Walter Presents: a fast-paced comic mystery enriched by a deep love of books In the small town of Crozon in Brittany, a library houses manuscripts that were rejected for publication: the faded dreams of aspiring writers. Visiting while on holiday, young editor Delphine Despero is thrilled to discover a novel so powerful that she feels compelled to bring it back to Paris to publish it. The book is a sensation, prompting fevered interest in the identity of its author - apparently one Henri Pick, a now-deceased pizza chef from Crozon. Sceptics cry that the whole thing is a hoax: how could this man have written such a masterpiece? An obstinate journalist, Jean-Michel Rouche, heads to Brittany to investigate. By turns farcical and moving, The Mystery of Henri Pick is a fast-paced comic mystery enriched by a deep love of books - and of the authors who write them.

An editor on holiday in a small Breton town visits a library of rejected manuscripts where she finds an MS attributed to the deceased owner of the local pizzeria which she thinks might be worth publishing. It becomes a literary sensation but some are sceptical about the authorship.

A gentle book about the French literary world (many of the names dropped were just names to me) and the effects of fame on the celebrity's nearest & dearest. Lovely.

Readers always find themselves in a book, in one way or another. Reading is a completely egotistical pleasure. Unconsciously we expect books to speak to us. An author can write the most far-fetched or implausible story ever, but there will still be readers who will say: “I don‘t believe it: you wrote the story of my life!”

My favorite book read of the year - I love that you never know the whole story (the novel written by Pick) yet it seems to play out (from what we do know ) in several characters lives, love that the wives can see themselves in Pick's book, love the story/mystery behind the writing of Picks novel, love the characters - highly recommend this book!

Finished 2/2 for #NovelNovember @Andrew65

I read this one very slowly mostly because I wanted to savour it. It is delightfully meta in that the story centers around a manuscript discovered by an acquiring editor in a library for rejected manuscripts. It is, by turns, dryly, darkly funny and bittersweet. An homage to novelists, the publishing industry, and the fundamental human desire to be loved. Highly recommended.

Charming and funny, this was one of my more enjoyable reads of the year. Foenkinos packs a lot into a small book, diving deeper into the quirky cast of characters than you‘d expect. Definitely an under-the-radar pick for that person on your gift list that‘s read everything!

One of the two library books for my #NovelNovember goal

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 3y

An amusing little novel that takes a light-hearted poo at the French literary establishment while also exploring the relationship between books and readers, and how books can change your life. Full of gentle humour, I enjoyed reading this delightful little book.

First square of #BookSpinBingo crossed off.

#ReadingEurope2020 #France ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In a library dedicated to unpublished books hides a hidden masterpiece, the author, now deceased, was a reticent and hardworking pizzeria owner has written a beautiful book ‘The Last Hours of a Love Affair‘, no one could predict the turmoil and repercussions it creates once it was discovered.

The Mystery Of Henri Pick is a gentle novel, no violence or fanged, just the mystery of who has written an unpublished literary masterpiece, The Last Hours of a Love Affair that has been found in a local library.

It exudes a deep love of books and of the process of writing with the emotional toll it takes on authors. It‘s also about love, life and finding happiness, all set in a small town in France.

perfect escapism and a warm hug of a read.

veritysalter I became so fully absorbed reading this, you‘re right, the love of books runs through every page. Each character, however incidental was fully formed and empathetic; I didn‘t want it to end. (edited) 4y
Lel2403 @veritysalter absolutely, it‘s a proper read. I loved it 4y
