Shining | Stephen King
Jack Torrance s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old."

I found this book to be rather slow, but when it picked up, I really did enjoy it. In my opinion, it could have been spookier, but it was pretty good.

Zoes_Human Have you read “Before the Play“ yet? It's a connected sequence of 5 short stories (about 45 pages total) of the history of the Overlook that was originally published in a magazine sometime in the 80s. If you google “Before the Play Stephen King“ you can find it to read for free online. 3w
ReadingIsMyHobby @Zoes_Human I haven‘t read it, no. But I will. Thanks for the info 😊 3w
Zoes_Human @ReadingIsMyHobby You are most welcome. I only recently discovered it existed myself. I hope you enjoy it. It's not particularly spooky, but it is interesting. 3w

This was a re-read for me and I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time! Super creepy escapism! I actually finished this a few weeks ago but haven‘t had a chance to post. Jumped right into Doctor Sleep and boy-o-boy was that an incredible book as well! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Found this at Goodwill when dropping off donations 😮! It‘s going to be for my younger son who collects/reads SK in hardback 😊 . So, my book buying ban doesn‘t count. Even if I re-read it someday 😉 — I read this way back in HS from a mass market that I no longer have.

TheSpineView Gifts don't count! 2mo
Reagan Nice! I love the vintage hardcovers. I bought a vey early edition of A Time to Kill last year, not worth much but a beloved book and so neat to have a copy that isn‘t the mass market paperback. 2mo

ValerieAndBooks @TheSpineView they sure don‘t 😂 as long as I know it‘s something *they* would read 😊 2mo
ValerieAndBooks @Reagan-reads that‘s cool! I think my son has that too — he has a few Grishams. And, given the fact that my eyes are getting older, I can‘t read from mass markets that well anyways, so why not 😊 (edited) 2mo
ValerieAndBooks @TrishB I was surprised to find it there! It‘s a book club edition from 1977 with a young SK photo on the inner back flap 😊 2mo
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen yes— mine was the gray tone cover with the blank face. Should have kept it for nostalgia ‘s sake 😂 2mo

Melismatic @ReadingIsMyHobby Bag of Bones was my fave until I read Under The Dome which is now my ultimate. Needful Things was also great. Definitely a unique style with a million characters. 2mo
Literary.Gem37 I am so scared to read a Stephen King book. 2mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser I read The Shining when I was 15. I don't remember it being super scary but I do remember sticky taping a piece of paper over the cover of the book because it creeped me out! I also read Thinner and Misery at that time and they weren't scary, just creepy. Misery was my favorite. My mum had Christine on her book shelf when I was growing up and I would read little excerpts every so often, scared the Bejesus out of me!!!! Still on my TBR, lol. 2mo
ReadingIsMyHobby @Curiouser_and_curiouser I find that some of his books are pretty creepy, but not like on the super scary side. I've found The Shining to be kind of slow at some parts, like less than half of the book left for me, and I've yet to have a “omg that's scary“ kind of moment. I will have to read the books that you've mentioned though :D Carrie is my favorite by him. I know it's not scary, but I just loved the story so much.

I‘m doing a pretty deep dive before watching ‘Doctor Sleep.‘ (previously read The Shining and and nearly done the Doctor Sleep book)

Watched Kubrick‘s ‘The Shining‘ last night and ‘Room 237‘ tonight.

I found The Shining movie was a little disappointing compared to the book. 237 offers some pretty wild theories about what Kubrick was aiming for in the movie.

Anyone watched these? Thoughts?
Do you think Kubrick directed the 🌙 Landing?!? 🙃

BookDragonNotWorm My husband believes he probably filmed it. 👨‍🚀 He's researched it a lot more than I have, but I remember in high school in the 90s (I'm from the Space Coast) the astronauts having side effects from the VanAllen belt which is low orbit space, much closer to the Earth than the moon, so something's up. 2mo
Bookish.SAM @BookDragonNotWorm ... interesting 🤔... faking the landing is one thing (I know little about it)... but I could believe it. The document interviews seems to find proof in The Shining movie (without much reference to other research) largely based on a sweater! Maybe Kubrick was just screwing with people 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
BookDragonNotWorm IDK about Kubrick, but there's a book by Bill Kaysing and a documentary called A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Moon that make an interesting case about a faked moon landing. The docu has 'leaked' footage of an astronaut aboard the spaceship being instructed how to fake distance shots. It's interesting...🤨 2mo
TalecArashi Distance shots had to be """faked""" because the lack of atmosphere on the moon would make everything appear equally near or far. To not do those tricks would make for poor-quality and hard to understand photographs. 2mo

This one was a roll over from October, because I was really enjoying it and wanted to savour it rather than rush it. This is now my favourite King novel. I will have to get Doctor Sleep now!

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Reviewsbylola It's definitely slow going so I can se le why some people would be put off. Maybe try audio, if your into that? So many books so little time. 2mo

Holy Cannoli, what a book!!! Every SK book I read I say “this is my favorite of his.” Lol I really, really enjoyed this one. The whole trip...satisfying ending. 4.5⭐️My fave character was Hallorann. Good guy. Love the whole “shining” ability- mental telepathy and precognition. Don‘t get me wrong, parts were scary as all get out, but loved it. 1977.

The next book I‘ll be listening to for #theredrumreadalong is Doctor Sleep which is perfect because the movie adaptation of Doctor Sleep comes out this month. I‘m interested to see how Dan Torrance has grown up.

King's novel offers so much more than the story of a man's descent into homicidal madness. The main theme of employment & its attending difficulties is coupled with the struggles of addiction; these themes are enveloped in a terrifying winter setting (a malicious wonderland). King has a reputation for being a bit too wordy, but his pacing is flawless in this one. The terror is struck from the beginning & he holds the pitch to the final page.

BarbaraBB I think it‘s much more a psychological thriller than the movie. 3mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB I completely agree. I do like the movie, but I was genuinely surprised by the book 3mo

This one will be another wintry mix, temperatures will plummet. Forecast indicates 1,300 pages. Early models show this system will leave by Thur. or Friday. Caution around mazes is strongly advised.
