Shining | Stephen King
Jack Torrance s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old."

I‘ve locked doors and slept with lights on this past week as I made it through this terrifying tale. Like Danny in the story, I could not make my mind shut off as I pondered the family‘s fate through the work week. There will be more King on my horizon… but I need to read something a bit more mellow next.

noseinabookagain I always balance out King with more lighthearted reads in between as well! I‘d recommend Misery or Pet Semetary next, both terrifying 4w

Stephen King is the master of horror and the king of dread; this is clearly evident in the masterpiece that is The Shining.

Jack Torrance‘s whirlwind descent into madness is pure terror within the pages, and you just know that shit is going to hit the fan! Realistic horrors such as alcoholism blend seamlessly with supernatural elements, creating a truly terrifying read.

I love The Shining, despite my reservations about Jack Torrance as a character. This book breathes with unexpected life, much like The Overlook within, delighting me again and again with the bright personality and heartbreaking innocence of young Danny Torrance. Providing readers with such a vulnerable and winning protagonist truly amplifies the terror felt as Danny tries to avoid being claimed by the malevolent spirit of The Overlook. 5/5

The first time I read this, I was in middle school, and Jack seemed like a tortured academic who had made some "bad choices".

The second time, I liked him a lot less, but couldn't quite put my finger on why.

This time around, I've cracked it - Jack Torrance is a classic abuser, and demonstrates wildly toxic patterns of behavior (including gaslighting and coercive control!) before he even gets to The Overlook. No wonder he made me feel ooky!

I really, really hated this book. Maybe it‘s King‘s writing, but it‘s just not for me. It was misogynistic, racist, and gave me the biggest ick. I might read Doctor Sleep, because I wanna know what happens, but I‘m not happy about it.

So I think I went into this book with way too high of expectations. I always heard it was crazy and scary, I've also never seen the movie. And I was really let down. I didn't think this was scary, and there was a part where I was just reading newspaper clipping for so long I almost fell asleep. 2/5 unfortunately.

FantasyChick @Clwojick I listened to the Campbell Scott narration. He was hard to get into at first and the basic storyline he isn't the greatest BUT he does do the horror filled scenes fantastically! It's more or less pushing through to get to the good parts. 9mo

Haunting, terrifying, and a horrible insight into the unravelling of a mind, falling into insanity.

The hotel is creepy, filled with horrors around every corner, I felt so sorry for Danny and everything he had to face and overcome.

Jacks battle with the hotel was raw, hard to read, and as one of his final acts to tell his son how much he loved him - you knew the hotel did not win.

Another enjoyable novel from SK.

bthegood One of my favorites - People often say the book is better than the movie - very true here - the movie almost feels like a separate entity (character of Jack and ending in the movie so different from the book) - but it is an enjoyable movie if you don't go in with the expectation that it will be like the book 🙂 I have found that I am usually disappointed with the movie interpretation of Kings books (even when he has had a hand in making them) - (edited) 11mo
LostInSpace @bthegood I haven‘t seen the movie yet but of course I have seen the scenes of Jack going crazy (bathroom scene, scene on the stairs) in my mind the two just don‘t seem to match up. The Jack in the story seemed nuts yes but much calmer, less unhinged then that. I don‘t know, from what I know of the film I‘m not sure I‘d enjoy it if I thought of it as the books, as you say separate entity 🤣 11mo
LostInSpace @bthegood though I did enjoy the original pet sematary movie - I haven‘t seen the most recent one yet 11mo

I still remember the first time I read The Shining a few years ago. Alone, in my house, during a 6ft dump of snow. I've never been so creeped out by a book in my life.
