The Shining
The Shining | Stephen King
Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Had a friend cancel plans this evening and so I gained several hours of reading (since I'd already decided I wouldn't be working tonight). One of the things I read was Before the Play, a prologue to The Shining that I'm 99% sure I heard about on Litsy. I really liked what it added to the story (background that is mentioned or hinted at in the novel is fleshed out here), but it is unnecessary and fairly cut. Fun for fans though.

rretzler Just searched it out and read it. Thanks - I wasn‘t aware it existed! My family and I visited The Stanley Hotel a couple of years ago and it just seemed like a creepy place! 2w
everlocalwest @rretzler That's so cool! I'd love to visit. I don't really believe in ghosts on a logical level but there is definitely something that defies logic and gives you the spooks about some places! 2w
rretzler FYI - I just added the story to Litsy. I know what you mean about ghosts-I also don‘t believe on a logical level, but there is a part of me that sometimes wishes they existed. 🤣 I would have loved to see some strange phenomena while we were at the Stanley, but no such luck. 😜 2w

Do not turn out the lights.

Do read this book during the daytime.

While I felt the start of this book was on the slower side, I accept the need for the plot build-up, because once it gets started, the thrills truly do not stop.

Jack‘s new job is overseeing the Overlook Hotel during its off season, bringing his wife and son Danny with him to stay... but something isn‘t quite right about this hotel.

Jack‘s character ‘decline‘ in unforgettable!

megandemartini have you read pet sematary? I feel like his books make me more stressed than scared but I love them! the shining is on my list ☺️ 2mo

I learned a few things from this book: 1. Never, ever under any circumstances should you consider sculpting your hedges into animals. 2. If someone tells you not to go into a room, do not go into the room. 3. Some places can refuse to let go.
I‘ve haven‘t read much Stephen King, but he is a master of his craft.

Ashley_Nicoletto Do not go into the room. 🤣🤣 I was waitressing when I read this book years ago. And it was after my shift at like 3 AM and I‘m reading it in bed alone. I get to the part with the bathtub and I just shut the book. Nopppee. I didn‘t pick it back up until daylight. 🤣🤣 3mo

Deeply disturbing for me but throughly enjoyable. As a Dad who, like all Fathers, wrestle with some of the deeper issues King raises in this one, it cut pretty close to the bone. Some of the tension was lost because I‘m familiar with the movies but it was an awesome read. Classic King.

Zelma I feel like this is the year I will finally read this. 4mo
Martyn_J_Pass @Zelma I don‘t feel it‘s King‘s best work but it‘s right up there. I particularly enjoyed the audio version from Audible. 4mo
sixgun This is a great book, although not one of King's best. And although the film will be praised for a long, long time, the book is a bit more psychological, imo. But who better to portray Jack, then Jack. 4mo

I‘m glad I finally got around to this one! The movie was a favorite of mine growing up, and I have to say I like some aspects of the movie more than the original. I find Stephen King‘s “personification” of evil a bit lame. I prefer it when it‘s just crazy people doing crazy stuff.

Recently I have been bitten by the horror-bug and as a result, have bought quite a few books of the said genre. My spooky purchases include – The Door to December, The Watchers, and Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz; The Shinning by Stephen King; Rosemary‘s Baby by Ira Levin; The Witching Hour by Anne Rice; Dark Matter by Michelle Paver and The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty. I am done with The Door to December and halfway through 'The Shining'.

Finally finished my first King novel. It took me a minute with how busy my past month.
I had no idea that the book was so much different than the movie until I started reading it and found out about the mini series. I always loved that movie and I still do but I can see why King would be pissed. The whole concept is changed. I will choose to seprate the two and love them both equally! Great story great characters! Good spooks but not too scary!

“Lloyd thanked him for saying so”

The movie scene where Jack Torrence encounters the phantom apparition of Lloyd the bartender is creepy, but it has nothing on the book! In the book, Lloyd never actually has any dialogue and it‘s less about a possible spectral appearance and more about Jack‘s descent into madness. And worse, Jack seems to embrace it!

But the movie version did have Jack Nicholson, so it gets bonus creepy points just for that! 😱

TrishB I much prefer the book! It‘s more suggestive - whereas Jack leaves nothing open to suggestion! 7mo
DaveGreen7777 @TrishB I completely agree! I did enjoy the movie too (mostly because of Nicholson‘s intense performance), but the book version is so much more complex and terrifying! 😱 7mo
Burghbookaddict I thought the book was creepier, too! I didn't really find the movie scary at all. 7mo
See All 6 Comments
DaveGreen7777 @BurghBookAddict I can understand where you‘re coming from. The movie doesn‘t really get into any of the backstory of the hotel and the apparitions that Danny and Jack see (other than Grady). Take the amazing acting out of the movie and it‘s a much duller experience! 😒 7mo
Branwen This scene was sooooo creepy! 😱 7mo

Jack Torrance gets a job as the winter caretaker for an isolated hotel in the mountains, with his wife and son as his only company. However, 5-year old Danny Torrance‘s presence seems to strengthen the malevolent air of the hotel, which turns against the family. This is creepy and atmospheric, and Danny is my favorite King character that I‘ve come across so far. Really glad that I‘ve finally read this book.
