The Crime At Black Dudley | Margery Allingham

Thank you, @BarkingMadRead and the #hashtagbrigade ... what a ride this one was!

THE CRIME AT BLACK DUDLEY is an early Golden Age mystery that introduces Albert Campion in a secondary role. Set in an isolated country house, it combines murder, suspense, and criminal intrigue. The atmosphere is strong, but the pacing was sometimes uneven, the characters were thinly drawn, and the plot was occasionally implausible but (dare I say) fun. ⬇️

dabbe The first novels by A. Christie (introducing Poirot) and D.L. Sayers (introducing Lord Peter Wimsey, a foppish sort similar to Campion) were not their best either and seemed more experimental—as does this one. Allingham originally intended Abbershaw to be her detective, but readers preferred the idiosyncratic behavior of Campion. As a first novel, it shows promise, and I am interested in reading more with Campion to see how he progresses. 1w

This classic was adapted to a drama and was in our 7th grade McDougal Littell textbook back in the day. I'd show the George C. Scott version 1st to my 7th graders; then, we read the play out loud (they did much better with the voices after seeing it first). It was always a favorite of theirs and mine.

What fun to revisit another childhood TV hero: Bob Keeshan aka Captain Kangaroo! This pictorial celebrates 50 years of this groundbreaking show (1955-84) The Captain taught us kids about kindness, diversity & respect. He hosted “Reading Stories” so we could fall in love with books. He & sidekick Mr. Green Jeans even taught us to appreciate nature, animals and our environment. That‘s before being replaced by cartoons/marketing tools to sell toys.🙄

MemoirsForMe In later life, Bob became an ardent advocate for anything that affects the well-being of children. We sure could use you nowadays, Captain!
