Here‘s my #scaralthon #tbr list.
The bottom row are my buddy reads/definite TBR in October.
Not sure what else I‘ll read that is specific to the ‘scary/autumn themes, but the top row shows the only books in my massive kindle tbr list that fit—all now downloaded to my kindle app.
#skeletoncrew @Emilymdxn

Emilymdxn Looks like a great list! I love Dracula! If you wind up reading books that aren't spooky or autumnal, keep a look out for those word search words and you'll find you get a huge number of points that way even when the books have nothing to do with ghosts and ghouls. I got loads of word search points for my grad school readings on medieval travel writing last year! 6d
Bluebird @Emilymdxn thanks! I‘ll look out for those. Medieval travel writing 🤔 i see how that could work 😂. I‘m also checking out my library for some cozy mysteries that will work for the bigger points. 😃 5d

#SummerEndReadathon

Forgot to review Hallowe‘en Party last week! It was another solid Poirot mystery, where the solution comes not from physical evidence but from keen analysis of the characters‘ behaviors, histories, and their essential character. Published in 1969, this one features Agatha‘s perspective on the fashions of the day — both sartorial and psychological. Excellent read.

Poirot - Hallowe'en Party | Agatha Christie
post image

I read the book out of order in my somewhat intermittent read through Dame Agatha's works before seeing the film. I needn't have bothered. The film bears little if any relation to the book apart from there being a children's Halloween party and some of the characters' names. I don't see why they didn't make a film from scratch as an original Poirot story

The hubs and I went to see this tonight. It was so so good! I read this book last year but it must not have made much of an impression 🤣 I didn‘t remember any of it! Highly recommend!

AnnCrystal How fun!!

I want to see this movie...we wait for the DVD release (not always easy to find these days).

I've heard rumors that the movie is different from the book?? Maybe this is why it felt like a new story.

Are there real ghost 👻?? Or just spooky atmosphere with pretend phantoms?? Just wondering...
(edited) 1w
BarkingMadRead @AnnCrystal oh that would make sense! The ghosts were made out to be real, possibly the product of hallucination, but they kind of leave it up to the viewer to decide I think 1w
CogsOfEncouragement I believe they made many changes. So not your memory. lol 1w

Blueberry The new edition has a foreward by the screenwriter that says the film and book are very different. 1w
AnnCrystal @BarkingMadRead Thank You❕That works for me ☺️. I kinda figured there wouldn't be a real haunting because it is based on an, Agatha Christie work. But this seems more promising than I expected. Nonetheless, I almost always enjoy an Agatha Christie mystery. 👍🎬☺️. (edited) 1w
AnnCrystal I keep marking my reply as a spoiler, yet I can't tell if my reply is hidden...is my reply hidden? My apologies... (edited) 1w
BarkingMadRead @AnnCrystal yes! It was marked as a spoiler! 1w
BarkingMadRead @Blueberry that makes me feel so much better 🤣 1w
AnnCrystal @BarkingMadRead 👍Thank You ☺️. Good to know. 1w
rwmg Yes, the film was very different from the book. I read the book in preparation for the film. I needn't have bothered. 1w
batsy Yeah, the book and movie are two entirely different things. I quite like the book and really enjoyed the movie! Thought the latter did the spooky/mystery elements well and the visuals were lovely. 1w

Poirot - Hallowe'en Party | Agatha Christie
post image

During the preparations for a halloween party, a child boasts of having once seen a murder without realising at the time what was happening. By the end of the party she's been drowned in the bucket used for 🍏bobbing. Ariadne Oliver, a guest, asks Poirot to investigate.

As usual I had no idea who the murderer was until Poirot told us. What struck me most was the continual laments from the characters about how awful life was nowadays (the 1960s).

The annual Harvest Moon Festival took place in my town tonight! 🧡🎃🧡 There were craft beers and wine, lots of food, cozy firepits, and a ton of fall decorations! Of course I brought a book with me! 🤭 This is an Agatha Christie book that I haven't read yet, but it's apparently what the new Poirot movie is based on, so I'm excited to try it!

AnnCrystal That sounds like absolute, wonderful fun 😊! The festival and the book too 😉. 2w

My latest Agatha Christie special edition came this week!! These are SO gorgeous, with amazing end papers as well. Although I'm not sure how I feel about the “filmed as“ right on the front cover. Also, the publishers changed sizes in the middle of publishing these! Still worth it, though. Just look at that shimmer!!

4✨There was a lot going on in the beginning, but it ironed itself out by the end. We start by being at a Halloween party which a lot of kids. One child states she saw a murder once and by the end of the night was found dead! There is several other murders through the book. After Poirot gets on the case he uses his excellent deduction to figure it out. I did have my suspicions, but wasn‘t sure how or why. Excellent buddy read @BrittanyReads

This is the first Agatha Christie I have ever read. Something tells me this probably isn't the best one to start with, but I ended up finding it quite enjoyable. Since I normally prefer dark, gritty crime thrillers I was surprised at how quickly I read this one. The mystery and characters were fun, everything ends up being tied up nice and neat, and it made me eager to read more Christie.

I‘ve been on a pretty major Agatha Christie kick this year, and the weirdest part has been the sheer amount of time her career spans.

Her first book was punished in 1920, shortly after the end of WWI. This books was published in 1969 and references “Hemp” and LSD in the first chapter. The changes in culture over that period for a pop culture writer are staggering.

#mystery #seasonal #halloween #audio #hoopla #librarybook

Gnora All this made more complicated by the fact I always associate her with the 1920s, and therefore am so surprised when she references things that come much later. 11mo

Not bad a storyline, yet it didn‘t full itself up for me. A child tells a story she saw a murder then, she herself, is murder because of it? It didn‘t make sense to me, especially the new connections being made. Wish that, title has Halloween, that it would‘ve been seen as such.
