ElizaMarie Wow!!! Didn't expect that! 2d
BarbaraJean I knew about the controversial ending, but I didn‘t realize it would be the ending ending. Like the last scene. All of this and then THAT. I can‘t. And what was up with Rose of Sharon‘s little mysterious smile?!? 😳 That took it over the edge from uncomfortable to creepy. Still. This was a relentlessly sad and infuriating masterpiece. 2d

eeclayton #mysoulhurtstoo What a heartbreaking story. Thanks @BarkingMadRead and #HashtagBrigade for this buddy read. It's a beautifully written and tragically relevant book, but I wouldn't have been able to finish it if it wasn't for you. 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig I had to finish before Thanksgiving, I didn't want to be reading with family here. My reaction was WTF? That's it? 2d
lauraisntwilder While the ending is unexpected, Steinbeck was setting us up for something like that the whole time. It's another example of how the poor are only able to rely on other poor people, to the point of sacrificing their own comfort or propriety. There are no strangers anymore and everyone is family. I think Rose of Sharon is glad for something good to come from her heartbreak. Just my take. What a book!!! 2d
Bookwormjillk I had remembered the ending but not the scene with Uncle John and the baby. That hit me hard this read. Also reading this made want to try to do better about my bitterness towards my husband‘s cousin living in my basement 😂 Thanks as always @BarkingMadRead looking forward to starting something short tomorrow. 2d
dabbe I just couldn't reread it this time. After having to teach it in high school (as well as OF MICE AND MEN), I couldn't face the bleakness this time. But, oh, how I love Steinbeck's writing. Here's for a short read in December! Thanks @BarkingMadRead for your on-point #hashtags--as always. 🩵☃️💙 2d
KAO I had never read this, and I‘m so glad I did it this month with you all. I found the writing truly wonderful, even though the unfolding of events really brought heartbreak after heartbreak. I do wish Steinbeck could have given us more hope for these tough characters at the end. Tragic! 2d
Bklover Well. I‘m glad I read it. @BarkingMadRead made it possible, but I am glad it‘s over. Beautiful writing. East of Eden I could read again- this one nope. Thanks @BarkingMadRead ❤️ 1d
KAO @Bklover I loved East of Eden too—and agree that I could read it again. This Grapes of Wrath journey was just so endlessly sad. I‘m still glad that I read it though. 23h
Bklover Me too, @KAO I know that this was the only group I‘d get through it with! 23h
