Brothers Karamazov | Fyodor Dostoevsky

Bookwormjillk Yeah what was that? 3mo
See All 20 Comments
Cuilin One moment he was talking about eating mushrooms, and the next he‘s seeing demons . Connection, perhaps? 3mo
IndoorDame @Cuilin @BarkingMadRead none of the brothers noticed the monk on shrooms having a slightly paranoid trip for what sounds like years and thought to tell him to lay off? Maybe come to dinner with everyone else and have some wine instead once in a while! 😂😂😂 3mo
AllDebooks @IndoorDame 🍄🤪🤣🤣🤣 3mo
dabbe I might have to stop being ahead a day with a chapter because when I read these I'm like “Did I read that yesterday? I don't remember a miracle. Hmm. I better go back and read. Again.“ Time to stick with the correct daily chapter. My mind can't keep track of this plot for some reason. 😅 3mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe in your defense it was in like page one of the chapter and then there were devils everywhere, so it‘s no wonder you forgot 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
Cuilin @IndoorDame lol exactly, lay of shrooms, man. Have some cabbage and potatoes. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - I'm having trouble keeping track of days/chapters because the chapters start over every time we get to a new “book“! 3mo
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks Oy! That, too! Is it Book 4/ch. 3 or Book 3/ch. 4??? 😱 3mo
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Thanks for the support; I feel like such a doofus reading this one! 🤩😂😍 3mo
SamAnne Well, this chapter took some turns. Demons and shrooming. 3mo
Aimeesue @IndoorDame Right? 😂 3mo
Aimeesue @SamAnne At least it‘s not boring? 😋 3mo
mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣 @Cuilin I was reading along “ blah, blah, blah can I skip this ….. wait what ?” 3mo
Cuilin @mcctrish me too, some I‘m speed reading then he throws in seeing demons and I‘m like, back up! 3mo

Bklover Same question. Where was Rodney?? These people are so weird. 5mo
See All 10 Comments
Bklover Also he comes home and she doesn‘t ask him a single thing about his day. She has absolutely no interest in Rodney! 5mo
Aimeesue Sybil does know! I think he was with Rowena 😂 5mo
BarkingMadRead @Aimeesue that would be amazing #wifeswap 5mo
AnnR These characters aren't very likeable. My reaction to them is similar to the characters in many of Edith Wharton's novels. 5mo
Bklover @Aimeesue That would be perfect wouldn‘t it?!😆 5mo
Bookwormjillk @Aimeesue ha! Perfect! Sybil knows all. 5mo
dabbe @AnnR I so agree! I think I've mentioned more than once how these people make me think of the Gilded Age New York society snobs. Just living their elegantly rich but humdrum lives. 5mo

julieclair So many sad things going on in these chapters. 7mo
BarkingMadRead @julieclair I had the worst morning, and I‘m sitting in the car dealership waiting for an oil change, reading this 🙄 thanks for nothing Hardy 🤣 7mo
See All 15 Comments
Bookwormjillk Ew I‘m glad I don‘t have pictures in my copy. They showed the horse? 7mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk mine doesn‘t have pictures, I consulted the google, looking for a pic with the beehives and all that came up was the cart with the horse on the ground 😢😢 7mo
dabbe Hardy did a similar stunt in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD with the death of an animal. I can't take that! 😢 #poorprinceindeed #lifeishardinwessex 7mo
KAO This is my first book by Hardy. While I am expecting frustrating events (and no happy ending), I am enjoying the storytelling! If a dog dies, however, I may not be able to take it. (The horse was bad enough.) 7mo
BarkingMadRead @KAO I really hope not! I read this a couple years ago, but details are not fresh in my mind! 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly Heck yeah! Seasonally appropriate! 💀 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly #poorprinceindeed 😭😭😭 @KAO I checked doesthedogdie.com and it only has movies, not books, but over all the movie adaptations there was one vote for no and none for yes. However, nobody marked yes for another animal dying, so it‘s clearly not comprehensive! 7mo
currentlyreadinginCO I am wondering where Tess gets her calm and maturity... and I feel for her! And Prince RIP 😭. Very much enjoying the story so far. 7mo
Bklover Poor Prince. 🐴🪦 7mo
Bklover @KAO I‘m with you. No dogs die!! 7mo
julieclair @currentlyreadinginCO I agree about Tess‘s calm and maturity. It‘s impressive. It will be interesting to see if she retains these traits throughly the book. 7mo

Bookwormjillk The heathens 🤣 10mo
See All 19 Comments
Bklover I‘m with @Bookwormjillk 😂 10mo
Ruthiella Ooh, people like Miss Lavish still exist today! Pooh poohing guidebooks and claiming access to the “real” country. Also , thinking democracy means “civility to your inferiors”. 🙄 10mo
Bklover Yep, they‘re still here @Ruthiella 😊🙄 10mo
dabbe Our heroine is ready for an Italian adventure! If anyone's seen the 1985 movie, Julian Sands played George. His body was found last week on Mt. Baldy. #ripjulian 💙 10mo
Morr_Books I was so excited for this chapter as Santa Croce is one of the places I always highly recommend visiting in Florence - second only to the Uffizi 10mo
Morr_Books I am fascinated by the interactions between the characters so far. 10mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe awwwww I‘d heard about that, so sad! 10mo
Bookwormjillk @dabbe oh wow I heard about that but didn‘t make the connection 10mo
julieclair I will take the heathens over Miss Lavish any day! 10mo
TheBookHippie I do so love a good heathen ….. @dabbe I saw that and he‘s been missing so long I‘m glad they found a body! 10mo

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm caught up! Darcy still anti ball. 😄 10mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig "he did not believe that Pemberley had really been primarily designed for giving balls in; but his family could perceive that his opposition was not intended to be very serious, and the discussion terminated with his promising to talk it over with Elizabeth, and even to consider the middle of November as being a date likely to suit the convenience of both households." 10mo

BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig so many things never change 🙄🙄 10mo
Ruthiella I love Mrs. Jennings. So happy to see her again. She has such a big heart. 10mo
Bookwormjillk Yay! A ball! 10mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Ruthiella and I liked Elizabeth's defense of her. 10mo
ravenlee I can picture Mrs. Jennings trying to play her game, “What letter does his name…” and Kitty rushing in “hisnameisPriceandhe‘salieutenantinthenavyandhe…” 10mo
willaful I don't remember Mrs. Jennings! I assume she's from Sense and Sensibility?

I wonder why the book is being so coy about Marianne. It seems a little late to bring her in and give her another husband.
10mo
Ruthiella @willaful Yes, she‘s from S&S. She‘s the mother of Lady Middleton. Sir John is Mrs. Dashwood‘s cousin who provides a cottage for Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters once Fanny Dashwood convinces her husband to do nothing for his stepmother and half sisters. She‘s a little low class and makes off color remarks but truly is a kind and generous woman. 10mo
dabbe Are we all hoping it'll be Price and Georgianna and Moreland and Kitty? That's what I'm hoping for! And Mrs. Jennings is still a hoot! 😀 10mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe that‘s what I‘m hoping for! 10mo
mcctrish Mrs Jennings makes me think of June George “I‘m not a regular mom. I‘m a cool mom” from Mean Girls 10mo
Ruthiella @dabbe That‘s the pairing I‘m thinking of too! 10mo
peanutnine @dabbe definitely hoping for Georgiana and Price, they are a much better match. Not sure about Kitty and Morland yet, she needs to mature a bit more first I think 10mo
rubyslippersreads @willaful I‘m wondering about Marianne too. 10mo

willaful This is truly the #namedrop chapter. 11mo
BarkingMadRead @willaful seriously 🙄 11mo
TheAromaofBooks I am enjoying this one, but the number of names and connections is truly dizzying! 11mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk 🤣🤣 same and I feel like this chapter was a Peter Gabriel song 🎶 Hans plays with Lotte, Lotte plays with Jane
Jane plays with Willy, Willy is happy again🎶

AllDebooks 🤣🤣 12mo
Ruthiella Yes. Everyone is so superficial in this neighborhood it seems, even the vicar! 12mo
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella it surprised me how rude he was to poor Nancy! Ugh!! 12mo
Bookwormjillk 🤣🤣 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly I think Nancy and the other neighbors are hoping the sweet governess marries the good vicar! (Just as we are! Though we haven‘t really seen him speak yet.) 12mo
dabbe Hatfield kicked Nancy's cat! Evil is too good a word for him! 👿 12mo
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻yes and yes @dabbe Hatfield is a total tosser! For some reason I keep thinking of the PBS show Grantchester, although the vicar in that is extremely nice to look at. The Murray girls are something else 12mo
Morr_Books I like this book so far, but I like y'all's comments more. 😆❤️ 12mo
peanutnine @dabbe right?? I gasped so loud when that happened. What a horrible man 12mo
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly No matter what he says when he does speak, it has to be better than anything Hatfield has said so far! 12mo
julieclair This quote reminds me of that old (and true) Southern saying, “Pretty is as pretty does.” 12mo

TheBookHippie 🙄 I do not like her AT ALLLLL….🤢 self-absorbed social climber 😵‍💫 13mo
See All 12 Comments
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie she has not one redeeming quality 13mo
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead seriously ZERO😵‍💫.. 13mo
Bklover She amazes me with her ability to turn things around so she is never guilty of anything and everyone (Will) loves her. 🙄 13mo
BarkingMadRead @Bklover seriously. She‘s a pro. I totally fell for it in the beginning, but damn! She‘s something else. 13mo
ravenlee Rosy is a f***ing toddler. And also emo with her “sigh, what have I to live for?” bs. It took me twice as long to read this chapter as it should have because I was rolling my eyes so much. 13mo
Bklover @ravenlee I know what you mean. Your description is perfect. 13mo
Bookwormjillk Piece of work. But hey, Will is coming back. Hmmmmm. (edited) 13mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I have high hopes for Will that do not even remotely involve Rosy 13mo

Bookwormjillk What do you have in mind for our next read? 14mo
See All 15 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I have no idea! I‘m open to suggestions! 14mo
CoffeeNBooks That gathering was a bit awkward. 🙄 And why did Mrs. Vincy say it's a pity that Mary isn't better looking? Is it so Mrs. Farebrother might not think Mary's right for Mr. Farebrother? Poor Fred- will he end up with Mary? And #Lydgateisinamood. 14mo
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead google says Tess of the D‘urbervilles or Bleak House are good next reads but I‘d take anything. 14mo
Bookwormjillk @CoffeeNBooks he totally is 14mo
BarkingMadRead @CoffeeNBooks Mrs Vincy needs to STFU! And such a mood! This is a disaster of his own making, he did this all on his own! 14mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Bookwormjillk I‘d read Tess of the D‘Urbervilles—it‘s already on my Kindle! 14mo
IndoorDame I‘d be interested in reading Agnes Grey and A Room of One‘s Own 14mo
Bklover I will read whatever you decide. You are getting me through books I‘ve never made it through before. Bleak House sounds good, as does Tess or AG or A Room of Ones Own. 14mo
Bklover Oh, and Lydgate can be such a jerk! 14mo
eeclayton Lydgate certainly effed up, but remember he didn't really want to get married at this point in his career. I'm not saying he was forced, though. Also, Rosy is definitely not the helpful wife that supports her spouse through better or worse. 14mo
eeclayton I'd be glad to join you for whichever suggestion gets picked. Tess has my vote, but I'd be interested in Bleak House, too. I've read Agnes Grey but I don't remember much, and A Room of One's Own is always worth rereading. 14mo
IndoorDame I‘m interested in Tess as well! 14mo
