Different Seasons: Four Novellas
Different Seasons: Four Novellas | Stephen King
154 posts | 204 read | 7 reading | 76 to read
A hypnotic (The New York Times Book Review) collection of four novellas from Stephen King bound together by the changing of seasons, each taking on the theme of a journey with strikingly different tones and characters. The wondrous readability of his work, as well as the instant sense of communication with his characters, are what make Stephen King the consummate storyteller that he is, hailed the Houston Chronicle about Different Seasons. This gripping collection begins with Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, in which an unjustly imprisoned convict seeks a strange and startling revenge the basis for the Best Picture Academy Award-nominee The Shawshank Redemption. Next is Apt Pupil, the inspiration for the film of the same name about top high school student Todd Bowden and his obsession with the dark and deadly past of an older man in town. In The Body, four rambunctious young boys plunge through the facade of a small town and come face-to-face with life, death, and intimations of their own mortality. This novella became the movie Stand By Me. Finally, a disgraced woman is determined to triumph over death in The Breathing Method. "

I finished Different Seasons last night. It took me awhile to get through Apt Pupil it was really disturbing. The Shawshank Redemption was really good and moving. The Body was very entertaining but there were some gross outs in it. The Breathing Method was a good, ole creepy horror tale. With the exception of Apt Pupil I throughly enjoyed this set of novellas. #losersclub

Karkar This was a fun one. I had forgot how messed up Apt Pupil was. 6mo
JulAnna It was fun to re-read this. I was surprised at how much content from the Shawshank Redemption movie was actually not in SK‘s original. Also, these are the stories that I wish everyone who dismisses him as a ‘horror writer‘ should read. There is some just plain good writing here, imo. 6mo
DGRachel @JulAnna I agree wholeheartedly. It‘s been nearly 30 years since I‘ve read The Body, but I remember loving the writing so much. 6mo

I haven‘t finished the whole book yet, but just finished Rita Hayworth & The Shawshank Redemption and wanted to give a shoutout to this amazing story. The movie is a masterpiece, and while plenty of things are changed from the story to the movie, reading the story adds another layer of greatness to this epic creation. It‘s rated #1 on IMDB for a reason! I love Stephen King, that is all. Carry on! 😁5⭐️

LaraReads It is my favorite movie of all time! Watch it every time it is on. Absolutely love Andy & Red. And yes, the novella is great too! 9mo
JenlovesJT47 @LaraReads it‘s awesome! I have to watch it every time I see it on TV. Such a great movie! ❤️ 9mo
sk888888 Loved both the movie and the novella. I rarely re-read anything, but I would definitely re-read this. 9mo

SpeculativeFemale One of my personal favorites (both novella and film), too. 9mo
CouronneDhiver Wait, I‘m confused. I read “Shawshank” a couple years back and barely anything was different than the movie... are there different versions? 9mo
LaraReads @CouronneDhiver I think it followed it quite closely, but from what I remember some of the changes with the Warden to me lacked the same gut punch of the movie & also the ending (which is probably my favorite ending in all of cinema) is more implied in the book and made into reality in the movie. Small changes, but to me they made big differences in making the movie better! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 9mo
JenlovesJT47 @CouronneDhiver in the book, Red is a white Irishman, Tommy doesn‘t get killed, Warden Norton doesn‘t kill himself, and the money Andy has when he escapes is from something other than the warden‘s shady business dealings 9mo
CouronneDhiver I wonder if I read the screenplay or some other edited version by accident, then? Ha! It was 3 years ago... 🤷🏽‍♀️ @LaraReads @JenlovesJT47 9mo
LaraReads @CouronneDhiver Lol, maybe! Either way, it is an excellent story & movie! So it‘s a win/win! 9mo

rohit-sawant @Nute Agreed! But I think very few of us can put the right words in the right order at the right time to have a profound effect, and to achieve that we often have to craft our sentences to that end, and we loose something of that vast intangible feeling, that King mentions, in the tinkering of it, and even the best poem that turns our dials all the way to eleven will still be pale in comparison to what the poet felt before he wrote it. 9mo
rohit-sawant I probably stopped making sense halfway into this 😆 9mo
rohit-sawant *before they wrote it - My unconscious bias is showing. Here's hoping I do better going ahead. 9mo
Nute I dig you A LOT and I get your meaning!😊 I‘ve been moved to the rawest of emotions with lovely writing, but does my emotion equal that of the author of those words? A pale comparison, right? 9mo
rohit-sawant @Nute Glad it made some sort of sense! 🤣 And for me, I can see it being pale in the sense that we can never truly inhabit another's headspace but can react to it with an intensity that's subjective. Words, whether on page or screen, or even music, often leaves me teary, almost embarrassingly so, and but my interpretation of what King says is that feeling of being in-the-moment speechless and simply too overwhelmed for words. 9mo
rohit-sawant Like how a certain look or squeezing some's hand can encompass all you could ever say. 9mo
Nute Right on! Don‘t get me wrong, I‘ve been speechless before in my own capacity and I‘ve been made or left speechless by the interpreted honesty of a moment in someone else‘s headspace. 9mo

ONE! Explanations necessary. I don't dog ear pages unless someone else has already done it to a ton of pages. I have dropped 1 book in the bath. We own antiques from my great great grandparents and I cracked a spine putting 1 back. Different Seasons is a library book that I swore I returned as a teenager and my mother had to pay for. 1. I like the sound of Autumn better, but Fall happens more easily in conversation.
2. Basically everything. But I guess...Fall pies, pumpkin whoopie pies, apple cider caramels...
3. I like both, so it probably depends on who I'm with, how complicated the corn maze is, or how comfortable the hay ride is.

readinginthedark 4. I never went as a child, but I try to go once a year with my family now!
5. This is a whole discussion, because I really like the spices that make up "pumpkin pie spice." I don't think they're appropriate in every context, but most sweet things that have cinnamon (real cinnamon, not artificial like in cinnamon candies) or ginger are going to win me over.

4 novellas from Mr King. Shawshank is fantastic and led to possibly the greatest film of all time. Apt Pupil is a great study of evil and what horrors we're capable of. The Body (Stand by Me) was my personal fav - King really captures the feeling of youth and I saw possible influences for his later massive novel It. And The Breathing Method is a cool macabre story with a twisted twist! Great collection.

What is awesome about the story of Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption is that any other writer would have written about an inmate who dug a whole behind a poster to escape from prison. Stephen King chose to write about a man who had resilience, determination and hope even though his situation was impossible. He chose to write about a man who refused to give in and who overcame all his challenges not just about the hole on the wall.

N is for Novella

Like his short story collections, King‘s novellas are reasons to get excited. His first collection, Different Seasons, showed people his range beyond the macabre, & gave us two of the best movies ever, Stand by Me & The Shawshank Redemption.

Again, if you‘ve been wondering how to start reading King, these are great intros to his talent. Pick them up❤️📚

K is for Kids. For me personally, some of King's best characters are kids. He does an incredible job writing younger characters with amazing friendships; those bonds pull the reader in so deep that it's hard to remember the character is merely a child. The innocence of youth juxtaposed with realities of life comes across strong at times, leaving behind a haunting presence. My favorite kid centered King story is The Body.
