Oliver Twist with a twistWaters spins an absorbing tale that withholds as much as it discloses. A pulsating story. The New York Times Book Review Sue Trinder is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a "baby farmer," who raised her with unusual tenderness, as if Sue were her own. Mrs. Sucksbys household, with its fussy babies calmed with doses of gin, also hosts a transient family of petty thievesfingersmithsfor whom this house in the heart of a mean London slum is home. One day, the most beloved thief of all arrivesGentleman, an elegant con man, who carries with him an enticing proposition for Sue: If she wins a position as the maid to Maud Lilly, a nave gentlewoman, and aids Gentleman in her seduction, then they will all share in Mauds vast inheritance. Once the inheritance is secured, Maud will be disposed ofpassed off as mad, and madeto live out the rest of her days in a lunatic asylum. With dreams of paying back the kindness of her adopted family, Sue agrees to the plan. Once in, however, Sue begins to pity her helpless mark and care for Maud Lilly in unexpected ways...But no one and nothing is as it seems in this Dickensian novel of thrills and reversals

Just re-read this after watching the Korean film adaptation ( The Handmaiden) of the book. Surprisingly faithful to the book and very lush, atmospheric, and erotic.

#12Booksof2023 August was was a great reading month and there were several 5⭐️ reads, but for the 3rd consecutive month the one I‘m choosing as my favorite was something pulled from my shelves after years of neglect. I‘m never able to pick a true favorite of the year, but this one is definitely a contender. Can‘t wait to read more by Sarah Waters! @Andrew65

Fingersmith definitely edges out several really great mysteries I read this year.

I‘m psyched for the new Simone St. James book! And I‘m also having a blast reading/rereading a bunch of Agatha Christie‘s esp all the Miss Marple books.

I usually think my favorite mysteries are locked room, but 2 of my favorites this year were riffs on secret/mistaken identity.

@RaeLovesToRead

August wrap up -
Of the 8 books I finished the tagged book was my favorite, Lady Chatterly was my least favorite, and Red White and Royal Blue was my candy read. 5 were rereads, 3 were 5 🌟, 2 were group reads, and 2 were mood reads.
Of the 9 books I bailed on (not pictured) 3 were not for me, 2 were good but not good enough to finish, and 4 are going back out the shelf to be picked up at a later time.

IndoorDame I love this! It‘s written like a throwaway comment that‘s basically filler but it‘s actually one of the cleverest descriptions of a “city person” I‘ve seen! Subtle character building like this all through the book is what makes great storytelling. 10mo

Got to the point in my book that had a bookmark. I haven‘t been to Philly since I was a kid so this is obviously where the friend who gave this to me bought it. While I don‘t usually go nuts over bookstore bookmarks, I love discovering the oldest LGBTQ & feminist bookstore in the US! For next month‘s #Roll100 I‘m going to start with Sarah Waters, and move onto Kafka if time permits. @Amandajoy I love your list!

Five I‘ve read and loved: One to Watch, Library at Mount Char, A Promised Land, Mexican Gothic. Funny, when I was narrowing down my list I took Obama‘s book off because I technically read it December 2020. 😉

The three at the top left were already on my TBR, so definitely reading those, and I hope to get to at least the ones on the right side.

So excited! ❤️

Amandajoy Yay! I‘m glad there are some you‘re excited about. The tagged book was in my top 5 this year. monalyisha I think I may be the only Litten who was utterly confused by the Hawkins. If I were the type of person who reread books more frequently, I'd visit it again. Was I just in the wrong mood? That'd be an interesting list to compile, actually! Another title that'd be on it, embarrassingly, is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. That one I *DO* plan on rereading. I read it in Middle School & didn't like it...but so many people (whose taste I respect) ADORE it! (edited) 3y
MeganAnn Looks like a fantastic list! The Nickel Boys and We Ride Upon Sticks are both on my list from @JackOBotts so I‘m planning to read those in January also. 3y

I read this historical crime novel in October, and it was ideal for the season. Critics have called it Dickensian, and it brilliantly evokes the sights and sounds of neo-Victorian London. Two orphaned heroines, one who lives with a group of thieves(fingersmiths) and one who lives with her rich uncle and helps him with his rare books, are brought together by a plan to steal the fortune. A thriller with an unexpected turn around every corner! 4.5 ⭐️‘s

Fingersmith has so many twists along the way, but the biggest one will legit leave your mouth hanging open in shock. As one of my fellow book clubbers put it, the book is like Dickens on crack. *OLD REVIEW* Lesbians. This is set in the olden days. One girls is a maid for the other, with a dodgy older man. They plan to scam the rich girl and steal her fortune - but then the rich girls scams her maid and she gets locked in a mental hospital. The maid makes it back 'home' - only to find that she should have been the rich girl, and her 'mother' is actually the rich girl's mother. Heavy on the lesbian action 😂 *can't believe I wrote that!*

Damn. Just damn. It was like a really great rollercoaster, slow build up and then a wild ride. I‘m glad I finally read this one. I will definitely be looking from Sarah Waters. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I own so many Sarah Waters books, but haven't read any. I need to change that. 3y
Cathythoughts What a book !! 👍🏻❤️ 3y

I‘m not a garbage person. I can‘t find my sisters Christmas gift so I chose a few books from my unread hoard to gift her. Appropriate? They might be read but I tend to buy previously loved books anyways so...

BookwormAHN I see nothing wrong with that. Books are highly regiftable 😺 3y
Hooked_on_books I‘m always happy with books as gifts! 3y
Caroline2 Sounds like a good idea to me. 😉 3y
Crazeedi I think it's great especially if you both have similar reading tastes 3y

AlaMich So this is where I give my traditional recommendation to those who loved Fingersmith. 😊 It‘s a Korean movie called The Handmaiden, set in Korea during the Japanese occupation. It‘s so good!! https://ew.com/article/2016/11/09/handmaiden-sarah-waters-fingersmith/ (edited) 3y
AmyG @AlaMich Thank you. I will definitely watch this when I finish. And thank you @youneverarrived ...I have Tipping the Velvet somewhete. 3y
Cathythoughts I loved this one & Paying Guests too 👍🏻👍🏻 3y

This is probably my favorite Sarah Waters title and it does have a #fauxmance of sorts, but not in the typical Romance genre way...instead the fake romance is a way to cheat someone out of their rightful inheritance...

#tropesinaugust

Caroline2 I LOVED this book! 😀 4y
Cathythoughts I loved this too 👍🏻❤️ 4y

Thank you @Lesanne for the tag

1) Do 2 books together count as a stack? Then there is one under the couch table and one next to the bed. I have one big virtual stack of ebooks.

2) Fingersmith. Not read yet.

@hes7 @HeyT @SamanthaMarie do you want to play?

#TwoForTuesday @TheSpineView

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 😊 4y

Wow. This was simply excellent and I did not see all those twists coming. The less you know about this book before going in, the better - just expect a pretty wild ride once it gets going. The last two thirds flew by for such a long book. Can‘t wait to read the rest of Sarah Waters‘s books, I‘ve only read this and The Paying Guests so far and have loved both! #sullivancat

erzascarletbookgasm I loved this book! Haven‘t read The Paying Guest, but I loved this other one 4y
cariashley @erzascarletbookgasm I need to read that one, it looks so good! 4y
