“Oliver Twist with a twist…Waters spins an absorbing tale that withholds as much as it discloses. A pulsating story.”— The New York Times Book Review Sue Trinder is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a "baby farmer," who raised her with unusual tenderness, as if Sue were her own. Mrs. Sucksby’s household, with its fussy babies calmed with doses of gin, also hosts a transient family of petty thieves—fingersmiths—for whom this house in the heart of a mean London slum is home. One day, the most beloved thief of all arrives—Gentleman, an elegant con man, who carries with him an enticing proposition for Sue: If she wins a position as the maid to Maud Lilly, a naïve gentlewoman, and aids Gentleman in her seduction, then they will all share in Maud’s vast inheritance. Once the inheritance is secured, Maud will be disposed of—passed off as mad, and made to live out the rest of her days in a lunatic asylum. With dreams of paying back the kindness of her adopted family, Sue agrees to the plan. Once in, however, Sue begins to pity her helpless mark and care for Maud Lilly in unexpected ways...But no one and nothing is as it seems in this Dickensian novel of thrills and reversals

Sarah Waters writes historical novels where #younevercantell what is going to happen or how things will turn out. (Or who someone is.) I don't usually like super plotty novels, but hers are an exception. Maybe because her books are so slippery! 😀

BiblioLitten I love her books. I hadn‘t expected to like them when I picked them up. I still have to read 2w
merelybookish @BiblioLitten I'm iffy on historical fiction and iffy on plot, but for some reason I like her books! 2w

Missed a couple days of #grateful21 - but I‘m on vacation so grateful for pretty much all the things right now... 😉
Specifically today: too much sugar (cinnamon buns! Chocolate chip cookies! Buckeyes!); making a dent in this book which I‘ve abandoned twice in the last 15 or so years and will actually finish this week; walking on the frozen lake and marveling at the beauty of it all.

You all said I‘d love this, and I did! Despite being a 500+ page #chunkster I raced through it. I loved the villainy, the plots and thievery against the backdrop of Victorian London. The first 150 pages were really, really slow but then the twists and turns started and I couldn‘t put it down. I love Sarah Waters‘ writing (I also loved The Paying Guests).

Whew, this was great! I really enjoyed this book. It scratched the itch created by my reading of Du Maurier‘s Rebecca earlier this year. The story got off to a bit of a slow start, but the payoff was so worth it. Waters‘ main characters have real depth and her settings are memorable and well-drawn. The best part was the story, though. I genuinely didn‘t know what to expect.

saresmoore @Moray_Reads I listened to the first bit of The Paying Guests via audio, but I think the narrator just rubbed me the wrong way. I don‘t think I‘m very good at audiobooking. 5mo
Moray_Reads @saresmoore oh my goodness. But it's Juliet Stevenson the BEST of narrators! 5mo
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I must be broken! 😂 5mo
Moray_Reads @saresmoore you are definitely broken. I'd listen to anything she narrated 5mo
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I‘ve been wondering if it isn‘t my headphones that makes audio so frustrating. I‘ve just ordered new ones because the Apple bud thingies give me a massive headache. It could also very well be my distracting children. (It‘s probably the children.) Anyhoo, I won‘t give up because it would be very nice to listen to Juliet build claustrophobic tension while I crochet and ignore my children. 😄 5mo
kgriffith My favorite SW. 5mo
saresmoore @kgriffith I‘m surprised by how different The Paying Guests is from Fingersmith. She‘s so talented! 5mo
kgriffith @saresmoore yes, very! Her Victorian “trilogy” is quite different from her later works in general, I would say. At any rate, I‘ll read her novels even when I don‘t particularly enjoy them) looking at you, Night Watch) because her writing is just so exquisitely GOOD. 5mo

My reading has slowed significantly with abundant December obligations (there‘s a party tonight—I don‘t want to talk about it), but I‘m loving the couple of smith-themed ebooks I am currently reading.

Also, about the aforementioned holiday party...I still don‘t want to talk about it, but I will say that there will be lots of small talk about my life choices as my husband introduces me to all of his co-workers. 😫

AlaMich Oh dear. There‘s nothing worse than spouse-related functions that you realllyyy don‘t want to attend. But I bet I can one-up you: I have to go to a wedding on New Year‘s Eve (!!) for my wife‘s coworker! 6mo
AlaMich Also, Fingersmith is the best! If you liked it, check out The Handmaiden, a Korean movie version. It‘s set in Japanese-occupied Korea in the 30s. 6mo

Mindyrecycles Ugh, I hate meeting new people. 😂 Good luck! 6mo
Cathythoughts As for the party we can‘t mention .... You will be brilliant! 👍🏻♥️. Love Fingersmith 6mo
Suzze Oh, I remember parties with my husband‘s co-workers. Mechanical engineers. And all they talked about was work. 6mo
LauraBeth I can relate to this so much. My husband just dropped it in my lap that his work holiday party is next weekend. Am gearing up for a million questions. I‘ll be in the corner with a glass of wine, talking to the host‘s dog and probably texting @MicheleinPhilly 😂 (edited) 6mo
saresmoore @LauraBeth I just found out last week and I had to go dress shopping. 😦 I picked something black, hoping I‘ll blend in with the table linens. Sorta makes you feel like an exotic creature on display when everyone else works together and you‘re the elusive spouse, doesn‘t it? 6mo
saresmoore @Suzze Yikes! My brother is a mechy who doesn‘t read, so I can imagine what that would be like! 6mo
saresmoore @Cathythoughts Thank you! ♥️ 6mo
saresmoore @Mindyrecycles Thanks! 😂😭 6mo
saresmoore @batsy I hope so, too. My husband tends to engage the wrong type of person in conversation, then leave me with them to find someone more interesting. I‘ve been coaching him on reading the room. 😅 6mo
erzascarletbookgasm Aww, I‘m sure you‘ll do fine. 😙👍🍷 6mo
vivastory I don't know if your daughters are going to be present, but if not, ifyou get trapped in an awkward conversation, you can always tell them you have to respond to a text from the babysitter & then just get on Litsy 6mo

saresmoore @vivastory Scott, you are a genius! 6mo
saresmoore @erzascarletbookgasm If I survive the evening, I‘ll at least be free from party obligations through Christmas! 6mo
vivastory I have even faked making phone calls before to get away from uncomfortable conversations. 😂😂 6mo
LauraBeth You will look lovely in your black dress and it‘ll be fine ❤️ And never doubt your life choices. You don‘t need your story to be impressive to others in order for it to be impressive. You‘re clearly building huge things that may not be linear to some people. One of my favorite things about you is that I don‘t think you live to impress anyone. You live to become you and who you want to be tomorrow. 6mo

readinginthedark Ah, the obligatory holiday parties. First, you're amazing! Second, solidarity! Those things are so awkward. My husband works with a bunch of tech people, and they're like, "You work at a...library?" You'd think I was an alien! ? 6mo
saresmoore @readinginthedark Awkward is the word! My husband works in FinTech. They speak perpetually in acronyms I don‘t understand. 🤷‍♀️ I‘m like, do any of you guys read books? No? 6mo
Centique Oh wow, I can totally relate to this! Especially lately I feel at a loss to explain as part of small talk why I no longer have a “career”. Two of the people from my writing class have scored amazing agents and look like they‘ll be getting book deals, so I‘ve been a bit glum. HOWEVER 😊 reading your post and these comments has reminded me of what matters! Thank you - it‘s not the first time you‘ve inspired me 😊💕 6mo
saresmoore @Centique Oh, that‘s so hard! Success is such a relative concept, and, especially in writing (hello, act of wild vulnerability), timing is of the utmost importance. But still... 😒 Have you read Big Magic by Liz Gilbert? I got a big kick out of that book and her take on the creative process/timing/success. Cheers to you, my friend, for making the hard choices! 🍻♥️ 6mo
Centique @saresmoore no I haven‘t read it - thank you for the recc! And all your kind words 💕 5mo
Moray_Reads Which is the Jeanette Winterson on the right? I can't make it out 5mo
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I found it buried in the Kindle deals! It‘s 5mo
Moray_Reads @saresmoore oh I've read that one, it's very good 5mo
saresmoore @Moray_Reads Oh, good! The premise is fascinating. 5mo
readinginthedark Yes, when my husband was in the Army, they were always speaking in acronyms! 😆 He works for Boeing now, and it's more like they just can't talk about work at parties at all, so that's slightly helpful. But my job and most things connected to the library seem pretty foreign to them, I think. I did have a pretty nice talk with one guy last time whose wife was a history major. 5mo

This is how I have to read this book ... with a postcard covering the part of the page I havnt read yet !! I‘m afraid I‘ll see what happens next .... I might glance down by accident. .... the tension is building at the moment... soooo good 👍🏻❤️

Cathythoughts @batsy it IS just that 👍🏻❤️& very serious issues raised. 7mo
Cathythoughts @Reviewsbylola Ok great , I‘ll have a look at that one 👍🏻💕 (edited) 7mo
Reggie Lol, that‘s so clever, I usually just use my hand. I‘m the same way “just glancing” ahead on the page for answers. 7mo
TrishB Great idea! I usually just put my hand there too! 7mo
Cathythoughts @Reggie @TrishB what are we like !!!! I‘m definitely a latecomer to this behavior... this book is a page turner & profound. I just don‘t want to know what happens next ... and it seems every sentence is “ what happens next” .... love it ... beautiful, wonderful writer. She can surely tell a tale. ... and it‘s heartfelt ❤️& Dark 🖤 & real 💔 (edited) 7mo
Mrsann2000 Loved this book!! Mesmerized by it. I use my hand when I don‘t want to see beyond the sentence I am on... 7mo
Cathythoughts @Mrsann2000 Yes, mesmerized is a very good word for it 👍🏻. It‘s the first time I‘ve ever hidden the text , I can usually trust myself, but this book is something else !! 7mo

Pickpick

I thought this one was “okay”. Loved the diversity of female archetypes and LGBTQ representation—but like a lot of books that I‘ve read lately, I feel that it took the scenic route in telling the story. If Ms. Waters had cut some of the book and been more succinct in some places, I would have been absolutely stunned. Overall, though, amazing historical fiction with a twist from an exceptional writer.

Cathythoughts Great ! I‘m looking forward to it 7mo

Post #4 from the library store. And these were some odds and ends that I picked up. I am going to give “Stoner” a try even though I have heard mixed reviews from many readers. A few years ago I got into a heated debate when I said that a reading friend of mine didn‘t like it. I got majorly shot down and wasn‘t allowed a word edgewise.

Reviewsbylola Fingersmith is SO good! 8mo
Susannah This is an awesome haul! Stoner was a frustrating read for me at times, but because of the actions of the MC, not because it was poorly written. In fact, it was so wonderfully written that I couldn‘t begrudge the writer his story. 🤷‍♀️ I‘m sorry about those people who wouldn‘t actually have a conversation with you about it. That‘s no way to be about a book. 8mo
LeahBergen I love Fingersmith and have Stoner waiting on my shelf. I‘ve heard good things about it! 8mo

I was almost done with my book when I had to leave for work today. I needed to find out how it ended so gave myself a "break" at work to finish it. Had to hide the book with some paperwork when people rudely interrupted me! ? but I finished the book and what a trip this one was! I've never read any of her books before but think I need to read the rest now!

UCLAoso @Jerdencon 😂 I have also done that! I feel guilty but I can't stand not knowing! 8mo

jfalkens @2BR02B we only tried the one time so far. What's Aquafaba? 9mo
2BR02B @jfalkens it's the liquid you find in a can of chickpeas. It has a similar consistency to egg whites and can work well as a bonding agent. 9mo
jfalkens @2BR02B ahh might have to try that next time, we used dried chickpeas and soaked them for 18 hrs before we made the falafel. 9mo

I‘ve finished rereading Fingersmith and this is still high on my list of favourites by Sarah Waters. I‘ve also panned Lolita. It‘s gone from my favourite modern classic to my most hated book and I‘ve shelved it at page 70. I‘m out. I‘m going home today after a weekend away and acquired six new books whilst here. So that‘s fun! I hear I have bookmail at home too! How was your weekend? #booklover #bookaddict #bookblog #sarahwaters #historical

Bronte_Chintz I‘ve just acquired Affinity by Sarah Waters as a gift from the JB group it‘ll be the first of her I‘ve read. She is one of those authors I‘ve meant to try for years and never gotten around to it. 11mo
AJBowers I love your wallpaper! 11mo

FerFer Your wallpaper is beautiful! 11mo
FerFer @Weaponxgirl - I finished it (with great difficulty) a year or so ago. It‘s very disturbing. 11mo
Weaponxgirl @FerFer I think it's a well done book but I just don't want to read it anymore and it's slowed down all the rest of my reading as it now feels like I should be reading this 11mo
FerFer @Weaponxgirl - I concur; it‘s well written. But it‘s difficult to read about an adult sexualizing and abusing a child. And I commend the author‘s bravery in writing such a controversial book. It‘s a dark topic and one that I‘m sure brought him significant criticism. 11mo
Sophoclessweetheart @Bronte_Chintz Oh! Jolene! I loved Affinity too! I hope you enjoy it! Xx 11mo

I‘m really enjoying my reread. I‘m hoping to read a good chunk today and over the weekend! I‘m not well with Lolita for #lolitalightofmyreadalong though... I‘m 60-65 pages in and I‘m hating it more and more as I go. Mum brain has definitely conquered this one and stripped it of favourite book status to book I can‘t abide. I‘m trying to stick with it but I may end up shelving it before page 100. 👎 #bibliophile #bookaddict #booklover #bookworm

Caroline2 I couldn‘t get thro Lolita either!!! 😟 11mo
Sophoclessweetheart @Caroline2 This is my seventh reread and it‘s always been a favourite of mine, but it‘s my first reread since having my daughter and it‘s completely changed my views. 11mo
Caroline2 Yeah, I‘ve only ever read it as a mum and your perspectives and tolerance levels are completely different aren‘t they!! I couldn‘t finish it! I loved the tagged book tho!! 👍🏻 😆 11mo
See All 6 Comments
Sophoclessweetheart @Caroline2 Definitely!! I am noticing this so much! I can‘t read thrillers anymore now I‘m a mum either because SO MANY of them have something bad happening to a child and I just can‘t deal with it. It‘s quite fascinating really how much my tastes have changed due to it x 11mo
FerFer “Lolita” was a tough one to get through. Reading about a child being sexualized, fantasized over and horrifically abused was disgusting. 11mo
Sophoclessweetheart @FerFer I completely agree. I‘ve given up on it entirely. DNFed at 70 pages. 11mo

Ah! Finally! I can post photos again, after three days of not being able to! I presume no one else had this issue ?? 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is my “hopefully” TBR stack for July.
