I have waited so long to see what Elizabeth Gilbert would deliver after the amazing Alma Whittaker.

Fingers crossed for a five star read.

Simona 🤞Looking forward to your review! I think that Alma is one of the most comprehensive female characters in literature. 3mo
LeahBergen I‘ve missed you on here! 😃 3mo
Redwritinghood I preordered it and it was here waiting for me when I got home yesterday. Excited to read it (when I can fit it in!). 3mo

Liz_M Wow, that is some cover. 3mo
AceOnRoam @Simona yes! I am loving it so far, its heaps of fun. 3mo
AceOnRoam @LeahBergen awww, so sweet, I am struggling with my data budget in these here remote places, but will be back in civilisation soon and you will be sick of my posts!!! 😘 3mo
AceOnRoam @Redwritinghood its very easy reading so far so you will finish it in no time at all. 3mo
AceOnRoam @Liz_M I know right, I love it. It is on my Overdrive loan edition but I hadn't seen it during the marketing campaign so ...Surprise! 3mo
AceOnRoam @Simona I haven't written a review, but I found this to be fresh and vibrant and fun. Vivian Morris is no Alma, but I love her too. Strong and independent and unabashed. There is a lot of NYC here, I wish that I had visited some of these places which are a major part of the book. One day!!! 3mo
Simona Stacked! 3mo

@wanderinglynn I have been hopeless at #bookfitnesschallenge but my goal for the rest of the 3 weeks will be one audio book per week (I have read 2 already but didn't post them).
I am in a wonderful place, anchored in Rangiroa Atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago. Not walking as much as I would normally but its very very hot here. The wildlife is amazing, this shot I took through a marine viewer (bucket with perspex on the bottom).

tpixie Awesome! Happy Travels& Sites!! 4mo

I feel the brackets are due any minute now. Bring it #TOB2019 #TournamentOfBooks #TheRooster

Redwritinghood I haven‘t done much TOB reading. I‘m so burnt out from Booker and NBA! 8mo
AceOnRoam You did a smashing job on those awards @Redwritinghood I am only halfway through this shortlist (if that)... 8mo
thebluestocking I‘m so excited! But I believe I‘ve only got through five of the short listed books. The Overstory is slowing me down. 8mo

Lindy @BarbaraBB Thanks for tagging me on this! I hadn‘t seen the brackets yet and I was just now thinking of this tournament because something similar is going on in the book I‘m reading, except it‘s paintings competing against each other in the 11th c Japan of #Genji, argued by knowledgeable women as judges, in 8mo

If you have been following my sailing adventures, I am happy to report that I am back in the Caribbean for a few short months. Having arrived into Barbados after an easy 3 week crossing from the Canary Is, we have since visited St Lucia and Martinique. This shot is of the green flash I have been looking out for each day at sunset. I have caught it 4 times, it's pretty cool. Looking forward to catching up on Litsy.

Book 2 for the #ABT #ATBWeekendReadathon The Night Watch by Sarah Waters, author of the amazing Fingersmith, one of my all time favourite books. Time is ticking, gotta run 🏃‍♀️

Erin7 I checked out Fingersmith per your racing reviews. I hope you enjoy this one just as much. 13mo
AceOnRoam It's a bit slow at the moment but I am sure I will love it Erin, I love how she writes these love stories that aren't love stories. Legend. 13mo

jb72 @AceOnRoam LOL oh yes. It‘s a book I bought used many years ago for like 50 cents. I prefer used books because they have their own story. 14mo
AceOnRoam @jb72 they certainly do! I stamp my books with my boat stamp before I release them into the wild. I hope to see some of them again and see how far they have traveled! 14mo
jb72 Oh wow! That‘s awesome! I like finding little clues to the books history inside the book. I found an old bazooka cartoon in one once. 14mo
Erin7 @AceOnRoam What a cool practice! You never know, maybe one of your books will make it our way. 14mo
AceOnRoam @Erin7 @jb72 it was be wonderful if one of my books made it over there. You can't miss the stamp SV ROAM it's always in the front couple of pages somewhere 😃 14mo

AceOnRoam That new pink cover is ghastly. Who "designs" these??? 14mo

twohectobooks It starts at 8pm EDT which is like.. the best time to start a readathon for me. 14mo
AceOnRoam @twohectobooks ok thanks, I am not in the states and couldn't work it out LOL. 14mo
twohectobooks You‘re only a little bit early! Since I think the goal of this readathon is just to relax and have fun, I‘m sure that‘s fine lol 14mo
batsy I agree with the covers... I have some fondness for the ghastly pink cover because the other one seems to have "ready to be made into a TV series" written all over it. 14mo
ns510reads Always wanted to try one of these readathons but no idea how they work! Enjoy the book 😄 14mo
AceOnRoam @batsy Yes, I was thinking that. Surely we don't need ANOTHER prison series? Some of the stuff in the book is not for prime time viewing anyway 🙈🙈🙈 14mo

Cersei's walk of shame! Yesterday I experienced this beautiful old city in Dubrovnik, Croatia, it is truely stunning and PEOPLE STILL LIVE THERE, talk about Location, Location, Location!

I'm not sure if George Martin actually wrote this sequence or which book it appears in, but there was a big queue of people waiting to go into the game of thrones museum!

Cinfhen So cool!!! I totally remember that scene!!! Have fun & safe travels 14mo
AceOnRoam @Cinfhen yes! I *almost* felt sorry for her. Almost. 14mo
Cinfhen How long do u think is needed in Croatia?? Hubby & I are thinking of going in a few weeks...we can‘t pick a vacation spot 14mo

AceOnRoam It's very small @Cinfhen you could do a long weekend here, but you could spend longer if you charter or join a boat tour, the waters are crystal clear and some of the best in the Med. 14mo
Cinfhen Thanks! A long weekend might be perfect ❤️ 14mo
AceOnRoam @Cinfhen have a lovely trip. Perhaps try the hop-on-hop-off bus to get a feel for it, then spend some time in the old city. Many restaurants for snacking and "rehydration" ??? 14mo
Cinfhen We‘re trying to plan a quick trip for mid August but we can‘t settle on a location ..I think because it‘s summer and everything seems to be high season we keep hesitating ~ on our short long list Greece, Amsterdam, Spain, Croatia, Budapest 14mo
Cinfhen We finally ruled out Slovenia, Iceland & Copenhagen 14mo
AceOnRoam Well that's progress 🤣 14mo
AceOnRoam Barcelona is a great place for walking around. It was very crowded but so much to see, it's much much bigger but cheaper than Croatia. 14mo
GatheringBooks oh wow! looks great! 14mo
GatheringBooks @Cinfhen i love budapest, bratislava, and madrid! have fun on your vacation. i clearly need one. four more boxes of books to unpack!! 14mo
AceOnRoam In the old city yesterday, the tower walk was 150Kuna, Hamburgers 85Kuna, Bus tickets 15Kuna for one hour, can of coke 7Kuna, litre of water 10Kuna I don't know what the hotels were charging but our marina was more expensive than Barcelona. 14mo
AceOnRoam @GatheringBooks it's a wonderful place, magical and unbelievable that it's still standing strong. 14mo

Simona I‘m wondering what they are showing in museum 🤔 14mo
Simona @Cinfhen Ruling out Slovenija??? 😥😥😥 14mo
AceOnRoam @Simona I thought it would be lots of costumes and Daenerys wigs. Some weapons, a variety of poisons and which tomato juice they use for the blood scenes. Of course a few dragons... 14mo
Simona .... tomato juice is a obligatory for museum like this 😂 14mo
saresmoore How cool! I love getting glimpses of your travels. 14mo
AceOnRoam @saresmoore glad you are enjoying them, I try to limit them so that they are at least a little bit relevant to actual books and reading 😁 14mo
saresmoore Meh. Real-life places and cultures always seem relevant to books, to me! 14mo
AceOnRoam @saresmoore Ok. Next stop Venice. Be prepared to be wow'ed 14mo

Cinfhen Love ❤️Venice @AceOnRoam !!! You take the best trips 14mo
AceOnRoam @Cinfhen Thank you 😘 14mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Let me be the critical one: Croatia (Dubrovnic and Split) are sooo turistic, you can‘t hardly walk there. They are beautiful but I was really disappointed as it seems to get busier every year. I would vote for Kotor in Montenegro, it‘s close to Dubrovnic. Or Budapest or Amsterdam of course 😉 14mo
AceOnRoam @BarbaraBB we just came from Kotor, so beautiful. We climbed up to the fortress. I couldn't walk the next day, but I got some great photos from the top 😃 14mo
Redwritinghood This looks like a great trip. Glad you‘re enjoying it. 14mo
AceOnRoam @Redwritinghood Thanks, yes it was good to walk on solid ground for a few hours too! 14mo
BarbaraBB I was very much impressed by Kotor! I loved Dubrovnic too but as I said, sooooo many people. Too many. Kotor is a bit more real - for now! I think... 14mo
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled So cool!! Literary tourism ❤️ 14mo
Cinfhen I‘m still working on Amsterdam @barbarabb 14mo
AceOnRoam @BarbaraBB Agreed, in terms of unspoiled by tourism, Kotor is better, but huge cruise ships come every day, hundreds of people, in and out so it's only a matter of time before it will be the same as everywhere else. 14mo
AceOnRoam @Cinfhen loooove Amsterdam so much 😍❤ 14mo
LeahBergen How cool is this? And I can‘t wait to see your Venice photos. We were there for our honeymoon and it‘s one of our favourite places. 😍 14mo
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen I love Venice too! Are you going there now, @AceOnRoam ? 14mo
AceOnRoam @BarbaraBB we have 12 more days left on our Croatia tourist visa, probably will go to Venice after that runs out. 14mo
BarbaraBB @AceOnRoam you‘re so lucky! 14mo

AceOnRoam @TrishB yes, totally makes sense we are having a long discussion on that right now on Goodreads. Some unhappy readers, but all of my crime loving friends and gone with 4 and 5 star ratings. Let's see what the fallout is. 14mo

AceOnRoam Ok, looking forward to what you think as well, a few I am sure I won't be reading...but I never say never! 14mo
LeahBergen I was surprised at it being on the longlist, too. 🤔 As @TrishB said, it doesn‘t seem like a “Booker book”. 14mo
AceOnRoam @LeahBergen no, something fishy going on with the judge maybe (Val McDermid) it seems very odd. @TrishB I also think they like to mix things up so that people don't get too cocky about predicting the list, but thank you The Guardian for releasing the list early this year 😂😂😂 I got all 13 correct bybthe time the booker committee released it officially 😎 14mo

I feel like I have just run a marathon through the life of Empress Xiaozhuang in a blur of cultures, customs, costumes, people and places that I wasn‘t familiar with before. A thorough historical account, of this little Mongolian Princess from age 12 through to her death when she was still a very significant and driving force in the game of Empires, as an advisor to her young Emperor grandson.

LeahBergen I‘ve never heard of her. 😮 1y
AceOnRoam @LeahBergen neither had I. My Asian history is worse than my European history. Actually all of my history is pretty poor 😂 1y

So, I'm doing a puzzle that's taking forever. It's monopolizing my saloon table, so many audio books have gone into my jigsaw and I'm only a third of the way through 😯
If I could redesign my table to have all of these compartments and drawers that would be awesome. (Picture ruthlessly nicked from Facebook).

Red Clocks: A Novel | Leni Zumas
post image

Written in a world allegedly in the future, fetuses have rights and abortion is outlawed. It doesn't sound too far fetched to me, it could be describing any given era in one country or another. Society and religion trying to define, corralle and impose its own rules on women and their bodies and their personal rights. This is a wonderfully written and very dark look at one towns women and their red clocks under a new regime.

merelybookish I was surprised how much I liked this! (Surprised because I typically don't like 'dystopian'. But this felt quite realistic.) 1y
AceOnRoam @merelybookish yeah, it may have been better marketed as contemporary fiction? It didn't feel dystopian to me at all. 1y
MicheleinPhilly Same. This sadly did not read as dystopian to me AT ALL. I just imagined certain politicians reading it and thinking, “OOH, good idea.” 😕 @merelybookish @AceOnRoam 1y

AceOnRoam @MicheleinPhilly TOTALLY. We have some of those politicians in Australia... 1y
saresmoore I started and finished this yesterday—so good! I love her writing style and her POVs are fresh and deftly executed. I‘m so glad I read it! 1y
AceOnRoam @saresmoore agree with you, it didn't feel like anything I've ever read before even though the themes are common in life and literature. 1y

Refuge: A Novel | Dina Nayeri

I nearly gave up on this book, but kept reading to find a very realistic (to me) story of a family as seen through the eyes of the daughter and the father. Probably a bit too detailed and this could have made for a nice little novella but the details bring the culture and cross cultures to life.

Another gorgeous cover 😍

A day in the life of Paul Strom, psychopath, and his wife Mia. Not an ordinary day though and creepy as hell. Not my usual fare, but I couldn't stop reading this one. I guessed a lot of what was happening but I think that was the author's intent.

Flat arse calm waters today so we motored to a new anchorage and I'm listening to this adult mystery written by YA novelist Melina Marchetta and it's a great book, although I keep thinking it's YA with the adults monopolizing the dialogue 😂
Even so, it's a good read and the poor narrator has to do boys, girls, adults and accents as well, Aussie and Brit. He's struggling at times but doing way better than I could 👏👏

Whole worlds and scenarios and truths exist in our minds. It is completely irrational. It is completely real.

Redheadrambles Hey Ace yeah I liked that bit she had on female rivalry - she just hits on so many little realities in this book. Hope your enjoying it or maybe you will be the voice of contrary opinion 😉 1y
AceOnRoam @Redheadrambles I may very well be. I really don't want children so I'm a bit over all of the 'motherhood' and pregnancy issues. I know. Cold. But I'm really relating to this teacher's wife, Susan? and I want to scream with her. I want to smash her husband's head into the toilet bowl and ask him to clean the pubes while he is down there. 1y
Redheadrambles @AceOnRoam haha yeah I hear you. I thought she was pretty balanced on the motherhood angle, coming down on neither side really ? I mean obviously her central character really wants a child and that drives some of the narrative but Susan and Gin balance this out ? Yeah Dider ? was odious. 1y
AceOnRoam Yes, thank goodness for this balance. I was very skeptical about continuing at the start. I was experiencing this frustration a fair bit whilst reading 1y
Redwritinghood This view of the rivalry- that they know it‘s irrational but still have it anyway- was a great point in the book. Also, I liked that the biographer character seemed so obsessed with having a child, but couldn‘t quite articulate why it was so important to her. 1y
