The Night Watch
The Night Watch | Sarah Waters
“[A] wonderful novel…Waters is almost Dickensian in her wealth of description and depth of character.”—Chicago TribuneMoving back through the 1940s, through air raids, blacked-out streets, illicit partying, and sexual adventure, to end with its beginning in 1941, The Night Watch tells the story of four Londoners—three women and a young man with a past—whose lives, and those of their friends and lovers, connect in tragedy, stunning surprise and exquisite turns, only to change irreversibly in the shadow of a grand historical event.

A gentle plot for Sarah Waters. I enjoyed this book, but the reverse chronological order was weird. I wanted to re-read it immediately in the proper order, but it was a library book and I had to return it. I'll check it out again eventually. #lesbian 🌈

“The Night Watch” is the third Sarah Waters book I‘ve read. I didn‘t enjoy it as much as the previous two and didn‘t feel such strong connections with these characters, but don‘t let that put you off, Waters is an amazing writer I‘d highly recommend.

Pains me to give a Waters bk less than 4 stars. Unclear why she told it in reverse, didn‘t seem necessary & left me unsure about what had happened for the chars. Also had hard time keeping relationships clear & didn‘t care abt Duncan. Maybe I‘m a cranky queer bitch but would‘ve liked just the women, maybe just K & H. Still loved the writing & queer rep & the experiences of women during wartime was poignant, but overall my least fave of hers 3/5 ⭐️

While I thought the writing was good, the historical details about WWII were interesting, and the backwards timeline was a novel concept, I ended up feeling rather meh about this one. It was too long and left me feeling unsatisfied with the characters‘ arcs.

Another wonderful novel by Sarah Waters. I will admit it wasn‘t my favorite by her but I think that‘s due to my own personal idiosyncrasies. The novel has an interesting backward time line structure that isn‘t usual of her writing. However, as usual there are twists and the character‘s timelines intertwine in that unique way she does. As always, Historically accurate and a great view into being LGBTQ in a different time period.

This uniquely structured novel, moving backwards in time, follows the lives of four Londoners as they endure the blitz of the 1940s. Waters nails the tricky timeline and provides in depth character studies for each of the characters as you get to slowly see how and why their lives take a turn after the war, for better or worse.

During the WW2, London was bombed by the Nazis for 76 consecutive nights, known as ‘the Blitz‘. Those who survived watched for the bombs that would start to fall just after dark. Hence the source of the title. The bombing raids impact all the characters in the story, one way or another.

LauraBeth ? so true! I had to do "media training" once to be prepared to give on-air interviews on tv and radio and I was instructed that if I was giving a media interview over the phone, I should do it while standing and walking. So I got into the habit of that and now whenever I'm on the phone with anyone, I pace back and forth (annoyingly) ? 2y
tricours My boyfriend can't sit still while on the phone, it's really annoying 😄 2y

I know there are various BBC adaptations of Waters' works as well as the recent film The Handmaiden, but I want big-budget, sumptuous, transporting, visually stunning versions of ALL OF THESE. Please and thank you. #seasonsreadings2016 #ShouldBeAMovie

Reviewsbylola 😍😍😍 Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet are my favorite. The Night Watch is the only one I haven't read yet. 2y
MicheleinPhilly @Reviewsbylola The Night Watch is SOOOO good! 2y
Buddys_Momma I've read most of her books. Am waiting on Tipping the Velvet to arrive as we speak-read it a while ago and loved it. Will need to check out the BBC series. 2y

I liked this book. It took me forever to read, mostly because been upset over the election. Waters is an excellent author. If you have not read anything by her, please do. Start with Fingersmith.

May books sustain us and help change our world..... as they have done before❤️❤️

This might be the best book I read this year. It starts in 1947 seeing war torn London through four characters eyes. You wonder about some hints of strangeness and secrets. Then it turns back a few years and you get to understand the events that changed their paths. Beautifully written and transportative - watching people cope/not cope through a harsh reality.

juliannebenford I loved this. Haven't read another Sarah Waters since. Why am I so mean to myself?! 3y
Centique @juliannebenford I'm sure it's because our TBR piles are so huge already! But I'm promising myself to get another of her books for Christmas. 😊 3y
