Life of Pi
Life of Pi | Yann Martel
Life of Pi is a masterful and utterly original novel that is at once the story of a young castaway who faces immeasurable hardships on the high seas, and a meditation on religion, faith, art and life that is as witty as it is profound. Using the threads of all of our best stories, Yann Martel has woven a glorious spiritual adventure that makes us question what it means to be alive, and to believe.

What I love about this story is that by the end, you don‘t know what the truth is. Did Pi make up a story to save his mentality of the even more traumatic story he tells at the end? Or did he actually survive over 200 days on a lifeboat with a tiger? Between the movie, and now the book, it is a story I always wonder back to in hopes of an answer I‘ll never get; but I‘m never disappointed!

Redwritinghood I agree the book leaves it a little ambiguous. Personally, I think there was no real tiger, that Pi was the tiger. 4mo
Stephuhhnieee @Redwritinghood I agree! I tend to lean towards the story he tells at the end... The brain likes to replace traumatizing memories to save itself... and while the original story is traumatizing... I think watching actual humans die in terrible ways is even more so. 4mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Agreed, it was confusing. But I think it's meant to be his imagination. 4mo

Yan Martel & Jerry Pinto discussing Life After Pi. Martel is a fascinating speaker & Jerry Pinto is my favourite Indian author but it was the early morning session and it was cold so we started with chai off to the side of the stage. These funky terracotta cups are treated as *disposable*!!! (So I‘ve clearly got a decent collection going now). I‘ve never read any of Martels work but now I‘ve got some autographed copies so I‘m going to need to!!!

cherinium Disposable?! That hurts my heart. It's a beautiful cup. I'm glad you are collecting them! 5mo
GlassAsDiamonds @cherinium yeah it‘s weird! Jaipur is working hard (*rocketing* up the rankings) to become India‘s cleanest city. They‘ve got a total ban on plastic bags and work very hard on rubbish collection (massive issue here) so are really really proud to use these “traditional” sustainable cups. They‘re unsealed terracotta/ clay but they don‘t leak or seem to absorb much. I can‘t quite bear to throw them out but there‘s not a plastic cup in sight. 😊 5mo
cherinium It's great to hear about a city taking such an initiative to clean up the world. Yay for no plastic cups! 5mo

I didn‘t care for Life of Pi. Didn‘t see the movie but when it came out, had to listen to people praising the book again. I really hated it when people tried to explain it to me. I understood it, I just didn‘t like it.

TheReadingMermaid Hrmmm... Maybe more glitches for Tim/Litsy to take a look at. Who knows. Glad it's working now. I don't wanna lose you 😃🤜🏻🤛🏻😄 5mo
Kaye Maybe I should just click follow everyone on my list. I‘m trying to keep them organized but maybe I‘ll just click follow on them all . I get new ones every day so I‘ve tried to keep checking to see if they post anything . Too confusing for an old geezer like me. I‘m glad we got this one straightened out. ♥️ @TheReadingMermaid 5mo
TheReadingMermaid I have a filtering system going on with my follows. in the beginning I have followed a lot of people that are no longer active so whenever I follow new people I try to filter out the old people that are inactive. It's tedious but it helps keep my newsfeed up-to-date. 5mo
Kaye Yes, that‘s what I tried to do. I have lots of people in Followers that haven‘t been active in years. I really saw no point in keeping them on the list. I‘m not sure what way is best to do it. @TheReadingMermaid 5mo
TheReadingMermaid The only way I have found that sufficient in any way is to go through your followers list and if you scroll down like way way down you will find most of the followers that are older and that do not post anymore. At least that's the way it is with my follower list. The only thing is you have to unfollow them one at a time. 5mo
Kaye @thereadingmermaid I tried going through them all before. When you have 3000 some followers it takes awhile. Guess I‘ll just go in on occasion and work at it. Then some of the new people that previously hadn‘t posted are now posting. Do you follow all the new ones even if they don‘t post? Because then, I have to check on them to see if they posted yet or not . I found a really good one today with lots of great reviews. @LWagoner 5mo
TheReadingMermaid Followed ✔️ I do not follow all of the new ones I have to admit. And the reason being is because not all of them post. Once I see that they have posted for a little while then I will give them a follow. Once I start following new people I will go through my list and just get rid of some old inactive followers. It's definitely a process. 5mo
Kaye Thank you for all your help with this. I appreciate it. It‘s very nice of you. @TheReadingMermaid 5mo

Mixed feelings about this one. Much of it is great. I lost a night's sleep because of it, I got so caught up in the drama of Pi's story and couldn't put it down. Fascinating. There's theology, action, adventure,& exploration, survival & perseverance. Well-written, w/humorous parts that made me chuckle. Unfortunately, I had to skip over parts unbearable for animal lovers. So, trigger warning. Gruesome animal torture aside, it's a good book.⭐️⭐️⭐️

I unexpectedly loved this book; I loved Pi and I loved Richard Parker. I know I didn‘t take from it the deeper meaning the author no doubt intended; I admit the first and last sections lost me somewhat. It is for reasons like that that I am still scared of #booksthatwinprizes. However I loved this book simply because I loved the story of the boy and the tiger, whatever the deeper meaning might be 🐅

BarbaraBB I loved this one too - unexpectedly. And I loved the twist in the end. I didn‘t know what to think of that 💕 6mo

I really wanted to love this book but the beginning was painfully slow and took too long for the plot to take off. I enjoyed the somewhat whimsical writing and was charmed by Pi and his quirky view of things however was turned off by the religious undertones and political pondering‘s. The ending just messed with my mind making me question my own perception of everything I just read. After reading this I‘ve found myself somewhat ambivalent.

The protagonist Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, explores issues of spirituality and practicality from an early age. He survives 227 days after a shipwreck while stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.

There's so much more to this book though, it's not just about someone stranded; he becomes stranded halfway through the book almost.

I liked it and I'm going to give this one a 7/10 also. ?

dawn-pInk I have to ask after someone finishes this book: what is your opinion on the end? Do you think Pi was telling the truth? 10mo

I loved this book. I think it helped that I had heard nothing about it before I read it, so I went in clear of any expectations and was completely mesmerised. - Unpopular opinion alert -

I know everyone loves this book but I ended up feeling kind of “meh” about it. The story was fantastical & certainly entertaining at points but overall I found the writing style & the author‘s love of repetition & lists annoying. This may be a case where listening to the audiobook instead of actually reading the book did me a disservice. Regardless, I‘ll still watch the movie. Maybe I‘ll like it better in that format!

Bronte_Chintz @StephanieGeiser Not quite finished yet, about 1-2 hours to go. Weirdly I‘m slower with audiobooks than print texts. So far I‘ve really enjoyed it though, I think the narrator has done a fantastic job! How about you? 10mo

Day 4: I‘ve rescued books from trash cans. The worst was a gas station trash can. I don‘t even want to talk about the atrocities inside those trash bins. 🤢 Who throws away perfectly good books? There are so many places books could be donated too (Goodwill, libraries, book donation sites, schools, little free libraries, etc.). #donatebooks

AceOnRoam Even a park bench would be better than the bin! 11mo
AceOnRoam Maybe they thought the book was a bit "trashy" ???? 11mo
jb72 LOL perhaps. I don‘t even remember the titles of the few I‘ve found (although one was a nudist magazine so....which I left in the trash bin). 😳😂 11mo

Day 2: worst crime against a book ~ Personally I loan out a book, and a friend dropped it in the tub. It was totally ruined. Otherwise, an entire bin of books with the covers ripped off. It is such a waste. The books should be donated or passed along to libraries.
