Count of Monte Cristo
Count of Monte Cristo | Alexandre Dumas Pere
"On what slender threads do life and fortune hang" Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantes is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s.Robin Buss s lively English translation is complete and unabridged, and remains faithful to the style of Dumas s original. This edition includes an introduction, explanatory notes and suggestions for further reading. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators."

@Amiable Just started Volume 2! Luckily I am enjoying it.

Just wondering, can we change our books if we read a book that fulfils a category before we get to the planned one? #chunksterchallenge2023

swishandflick My favorite classic! I remember being in the sixth grade, and checking out an unabridged copy from my school library. The librarian was so shocked, told me I was the first student to check it out in 8 years, and told me to keep it. Somewhere through the years I lost track of that copy and it makes me sad! 6d
eris404 @swishandflick that‘s a really sweet story ♥️ 6d
Amiable Of course! You can read whatever you want. The goal of the challenge is just to encourage people to aim for the book with the higher page counts that they might normally avoid.

@Amiable

Amiable Fabulous plan! 👍🏼 I really should read this one again. It‘s been a while. 1w
LitStephanie I hope you like it! I tried listening to the audio version but just got annoyed by all the French. I don't speak any French but think the printed version would be easier because one could just skip the French. 1w
AllDebooks @Karisimo hope you feel better. I've scheduled a #buddyread for this in March. You're more than welcome to join in, you too @Amiable https://litsy.com/p/akFhbnFiN2g1 1w

Amiable @AllDebooks I‘m currently reading two 1,000+ page chunksters simultaneously. If I manage to finish one of them by March, I‘ll try to hop into your buddy read! Can you put me on your tag list just in case? 1w
AllDebooks @Amiable oooh, I LOVE a chunkster. What are you reading? Will add you to taglist x 1w
Amiable I‘m reading a biography of Beethoven and I‘m also participating in the #Clarissa read with a group of other Littens—you should join us! 1w
Amiable @AllDebooks And also —I‘ve been hosting a chunkster challenge for the past few years —you can get in on that as well! #ChunksterChallenge2023 1w
BarbaraJean Hope you‘re feeling better, and enjoying your Chunkster! This one is on my list for the #ChunksterChallenge2023 but I didn‘t feel quite ready to tackle it yet! @AllDebooks I‘d love to join your buddy read in March—it would be great to read this along with others. Would you add me to your tag list? 5d

I‘m calling it on the year‘s best book. There‘s no way I‘ll read better between now and year‘s end.

This is embarrassing though. I quit the brackets in August because I couldn‘t choose a favorite book in the first 8 months. But in hindsight, the cat took the lead by a hair. 😁🐈‍⬛ In the end, the Count beat them all.

So so many good books I read this year that didn‘t even make it into the #readingbracket2022

BarbaraBB Love your winner and that you read so many good African books! 2mo
Vansa There's so much discussion about "the canon" being irrelevant and so on,but I find that a lot of old classics are genuinely excellent, well written books with great character development. And by character development,I don't mean a privileged woman banging on about how she has " mental health" issues 2mo

This book is the ultimate revenge novel, but with a little of everything: romance, pirates, murder mystery, betrayal, adventure, travel. Dantes was thrown in a dungeon on trumped up charges & after escaping and becoming insanely wealthy, he seeks insidious revenge on the culprits who put him there. It was impossible for me not to cheer him on. My only frustration was how he “helped” 2 lovers at the end; it was written to be a kindness but I ⬇️

Texreader took it as a cruelty. But I loved the end of Dantes‘ story. It was poignant. The book encompassed all my brain power and I couldn‘t read anything else at the same time. Too much going on and many surprises. Does anyone agree there seemed to even be a lesbian tryst in the book? The narrator was terrific. I doubt I‘d have finished it because of its somewhat dated writing style had I read the book. Listening to it was perfect. #chunksterchallenge 2mo

Have I got a surprise! If you‘ve read the Oxford edition of this book, then you do not have this chapter!! I sometimes follow along the audiobook (which is unabridged) with my son‘s Oxford edition. And there between two paragraphs there should be this chapter (the subject is in the comments only if you want to read a spoiler)!

Texreader The “Past” has the Count visiting his dungeon at Chateau d‘If and leaving with a heart-rending souvenir. It‘s very good and I can‘t imagine why it was left out of the Oxford edition! 2mo

I finally finished this classic adventure story, after working through it slowly the entire year. I found the Penguin Classics Robin Buss translation to be very good (compared to the Project Gutenberg one).

kwmg40 @Ann_Reads @SamAnne A friend of mine started with the Gutenberg translation and complained that a couple of passages sounded very strange. We compared the two translations to the original French and the Buss was definitely superior. I'm a big fan of PG and public domain books but in this case, the Buss was worth paying for. 3mo
kwmg40 @zezeki @RkaVlgyi My book club at work decided to read it over the year, and it helped to break it up into monthly chunks. Sometimes the action got exciting enough that I really wanted to read ahead! 3mo

I really need to learn to stop reading my childhood favorites and just let them be. I didn't love this this time around. Too much going on and not in a good way but in a "meet the word count" way. I am sad.

To raise my spirits, I have included a pic of Henry Cavill from the CoMC film he was in. So young then. This is apparently one of the times that I prefer the movie over the book.

IndianBookworm It's interesting to know your perspective, even I liked it as a child. I wonder what would my opinion be now! 3mo

It‘s been a decade since I first read this & it was just as powerful the 2nd time around. The scenes with Dantes in prison remains some of my favorite from any book. I love his relationship w/the Abbe. The whole plot is an incredible example of patience & slow-burning revenge. There‘s a lag in the middle where the plot gets distracted, but other than that it‘s incredible start to finish. When it all comes together it‘s hard not to cheer out loud!

📖 I‘m trying to read more classics! My favorite is The Count of Monte Cristo, because it has everything! My least favorite so far has probably been Moby Dick (it‘s starts out great, and you get sucked in and then they bore you to death for a very long while)

A man of many masks, the Count of Monte Cristo teaches one to go through life with some degree of humanity and to remain humble to some degree. This masterpiece incessantly kept you on edge all throughout 1243 pages of pure ingeniousness. The ending was prolific and tied the rest of the novel together very nicely. My only criticism comes not from the novel itself but the publisher. I purchased this novel brand new and the etching is already worn.

A well-deserved classic not previously read (although I loved The Three Musketeers). Easy to dismiss such stories as cliched until you recall this was written 200 years ago. It was the trailblazer! Such books have remained popular for good reason - interesting characters, epic plots and beautiful writing.
This narrator was soothing - had to rewind several times as his voice was a successful cure for my insomnia.
