Napoleon: A Life | Andrew Roberts
post image
Pickpick

Whilst this is a genuine #chunkster of a read...it's also very detailed read. It almost reads as a work of fiction...although there are brief moments of dry information (as a lover of historical nonfiction this didn't bother me in the slightest) but some readers may find it a little tedious. #bookspin @hearomaofbooks

Kristy_K Great review! I‘m hoping to get to this one later this year. The page count is definitely a little daunting. 1mo

Napoleon the Great | Andrew Roberts

Pickpick

27 Jan-6 Feb 24 (audiobook)
A long and thorough account of Napoleon‘s life. No idea why I decided to listen to this. There were a lot of battles and a large number of men and horses died. Roberts does not villainise Napoleon but it is difficult to view him as a hero, particularly after the disastrous Russian campaign. I do know significantly more about Napoleon, and to a lesser extent his contemporaries, than I did at the start of the 37+ hours.

#BookedInTime November Reads Napoleons Era

DNF‘d the Glass Blowers, may read at a different time.
Still reading Finding Napoleon which is a bit meh.
Finished The Secret Life of Country Gentlemen which is a total blame it on Litsy read. Spicy 🌶️ not my usual read but it was great. How were your Napoleon Era Reads? See the movie?

Bookwormjillk I really wanted to get to Jonathan Strange but didn‘t. I do plan to see the movie soon! 5mo

Cuilin @Bookwormjillk looking forward to your thoughts on the movie. I have comments!!!! 5mo
AnnR I finished The Glass Blowers but I'm not sure that I'd recommend it to others. The beginning third of the book was the most interesting but after that the political/family drama really dragged on. 5mo
Desha We are going to see Napoleon but haven‘t yet! Looking forward to it! 5mo
TheBookgeekFrau How is it the last day of November??? There was just no time to read about Napoleon 😣 5mo
Cuilin @TheBookgeekFrau I get it!!! 5mo
dabbe It only took me 11 months, but I finally finished WAR AND PEACE, thanks to the translation recommended by @Cuilin. A definite pick for all the obvious reasons, but I did like ANNA KARENINA more. 🤩 5mo
dabbe Reminder:
Here is the link to our spreadsheet: https://tinyurl.com/tzx2rza5
If you have a moment at this SLOW time of year (ha), please look over all of the books from all of our eras and make sure I have them in the right spot. Also, let me know how you would rate it for the benefit of all of us. We are quite an impressive group! Thanks, @Cuilin, for your magnificent leadership. 🩵❄️🩵
Is the Victorian era next up for December or January? ⬇️

dabbe P.S. I also made all of you editors on the document, so you can add/change what you'd like, too ... or just let me know, and I'll be happy to do it, too! 🤩 5mo
Deblovestoread Well it‘s another failed month for me. I didn‘t get very far into my book and set it aside for other things. Hope to give it more time in the future. Looking forward to seeing the movie. 5mo
Cuilin @Deblovestoread no failure here. It‘s all good. 😊 5mo
Cuilin @dabbe Victorian for December. Thanks for all your work on the spreadsheet Denise. 🫡 You are a star. 5mo
Cuilin @dabbe congratulations 🎉 I loved W&P. 5mo
Deblovestoread @dabbe I‘m the weirdo who LOVES W&P and has read it more than once. Congrats on finishing! 5mo
dabbe @Cuilin 🩵❄️🩵 5mo
dabbe @Cuilin 🤩🤗😍 5mo
dabbe @Deblovestoread You're not a weirdo AT ALL! I loved the characters and their storylines; I just didn't fare so well with the “war“ part or the epilogue where Tolstoy shared his thoughts of Napoleon and the other leaders for PAGES AND PAGES! 🤣🤩🤗 5mo
Cuilin @Deblovestoread I love that. I‘d definitely reread!! 5mo
julieclair I plan to watch the movie. I actually visited the house where Napoleon was born in Corsica a few weeks ago, so I‘m extra excited about the movie! 5mo
julieclair I haven‘t started my Napoleon book, Tree of Gold, but really want to read it. I never seem to get to all the books I want to read in any given month. I have decided that for 2024, I will cut down on the number of buddy reads I‘m doing. But I am definitely keeping this one, as it‘s one of my favorites! 5mo
julieclair @dabbe Congrats on W&P! It‘s inspiring to think it took you a year. That means there‘s hope for me, lol. 5mo
dabbe @julieclair I could only handle about 10 pages a day. I felt like the tortoise against the hare: #slowandsteadywinstherace 🤩🤗😍 5mo
Cuilin @julieclair How wonderful to visit Corsica! I always think I have more time to read than actual reality. 5mo
rwmg @dabbe Just to point out that on the spreadsheet “The Building of Jalna“ is included in lmmigration to Canada and in the Napoleonic Era while it should only be on the Immigration to Canada page. 5mo
dabbe @rwmg Got it fixed! Thanks! 5mo
Bluebird @dabbe congrats on reading W&P! Quite the chunkster! 5mo
Bluebird I finally read Naomi Novik‘s his Majesty‘s Dragon! Historical Fantasy. Napoleonic War with dragons. Hee hee. Excellent start to a new series for me! 5mo
Cuilin @Bluebird I love that. 🐉 5mo
Mollyanna I am about a third of the way through The Tide Watchers. It‘s a little slow as all the characters are introduced (there are a LOT of characters…), but the pace is picking up. Hope to get it done soon. @dabbe Congrats on W&P, it‘s on my TBR 5mo
Cuilin @Mollyanna sounds like an exciting read. 5mo

New episode just posted! We catch up after a week off and discuss many things. Raw eggs in coffee, holistic shampoo, and mysterious vanishings. Then, we select another book to add to our increasingly out of control tbr. Enjoy!

I did it!🎉 It only took 10 months 😅. The beginning was great, it drug in the middle, but the ending wrapped it all up so well! I don't know if I can enjoy the movie anymore now that I know the true ending. My advice to others- keep a character list handy at all times!
